@Aegon Got it and downloaded, not played yet though
08:30
will you play with ASOIAF mod or try vanilla first?
09:03
Don't know, it'll likely be a while before I get round to playing it anyway
09:34
@TheLethalCarrot Nice. Whenever you get around, You should try vanilla first to learn the ropes. After that, get the AGOT mod.
Ireland is a good place to start, as it's lot of small count/dukes. You can become king of Ireland pretty soon, the next step being the unification of Britannia
the old gods bookmarks have also interesting start, either as a viking if you like raids, or carolingian ruler if you like succession lines and coughing sliding staircases coughing
10:02
@Kepotx Its Noob Island only in 1066 start though. Before that, the Tribal rulers are harder to handle
But eh, he wouldn't get start dates earlier than 1066 with just the base game
the bookmarks can be change in files, so i suppose he can start with charlemagne and old gods bookmarks, but he just can't play pagans
you can even start earlier, even if there are less and less rulers, so in lika AD1 you have the pope, the roman empire and shatered word
and i don't know if it's still the case but back in the days, you just had to change a boolean in a file to play muslim
10:42
@Aegon Aye that was my plan when I get round to it
Though currently I'm finally playing through the Half Life 2 episodes, then I have ACO to complete and Far Cry 5 at some point. All the while playing some CSGO, Fortnite and PUBG in between
And I have a lot more on my backlog than that lot haha

Q: Who does Arya Stark mean when she says, someone has already told her that she is too smart for her own good?

AlmaIn season 2, episode 7 of Game of Thrones, Tywin Lannister asks Arya: "You're too smart for your own good, has anyone told you that?" She smiles sligthly and says "Yes". It makes me feel like she's referring to something specific, but I can't remember. Does anyone know who first told Arya that ...

Q: Where do small folks surnames come from?

PaulSo, we know nobles get their surnames from their house (Stark, Greyjoy, etc), which could include commoners with names from fallen houses (eg Brown Ben Plumm) We know acknowledged bastards get a regional surname (Snow, Waters, Flowers, etc). We know that subsequent offspring of acknowledged ...

i don't think it's a duplicate, this question ask how did janos choose the name "Slynt" and allar the name "Deem "
Well it's asking if commoners have surnames but uses those as an example of their thought process.
the question would be "how do you choose the name of your new house"
janos ain't smallfolk anymore
No, I think that's been asked before though
I'll have a look
JAD
JAD
I think there are more examples of surnames that are not nobles
12:21
Probably but the chosen ones are nobels
JAD
JAD
One example that comes to mind is Jeyne Poole. I don't think the Pooles were nobles, but it's not obvious what the name is based on either
hot pie?
I'll have a look
JAD
JAD
Pie as surname is quite obvious, as he's a baker
also, mfw my 2 liner harry potter answer almost has 60 upvotes on M&TV
seems right, janos was a Slynt before being noble
12:29
Though was he a Slynt before being high up in the Goldcloaks
Likely because he was commander of the City Watch when we meet him so he's already made a name, not sure
but was it a nickname or a surname?
Could be either
It isn't spelled out for us
and a high officier is not really small folk, but not noble, so nobles are not the only one to get surnames
Speculation seems to suggest a middle class using surnames and it could even be that names are custom not law like with bastard names
Bastard names are also custom, not law. At least, GRRM said, “Custom decreed” several times when explaining bastard names.
12:43
That's what I said
Welcome to TQAT anyway to all 3 of you (being lazy :P)

@Kepotx in a world where there is no explicit register of citizens, is there truly a difference?
Not really
and in lot of cultures, lot of surname came from nickname
JAD
JAD
and I guess that especially in the towns, it makes sense that there is the need for more than just first names
So a Winterfell, King's Landing, etc
we couldspeculate that it's the same in planetos, where nickname and surname have the same function : distinguish jon the butcher from jon the baker
12:46
Side note Poole is a noble house
I’ll revise my question shortly, though, it hadn’t occurred to me to consider these folks as middle class
Well I think that might be an answer
Though speculation rather than anything concrete
I've just posted one but I'm not entirely happy with it
as I see: random small folks, no need for second name, particular/middle class folk : nicname/surname, but not necessary hereditary (Tom Sevenstrings, maybe Janos Slynt before being noble), noble: surname is the House name
Seems like a good conclusion but it's not clear if this is intentional, maybe I'll tweet E&L
I may have rambled a bit in my answer, if so let me know where I can be clearer :)
