8:54 AM
Lol

IDK what's worse... that or Ned saying "Lyanna..." and then him getting resurrected
Yes, he might figure the rest out, but the initial implication is pretty funny

Oh just saying Lyanna would be so much worse... "YOU KNOCKED UP YOUR SISTER?!"

Hahaha that'd be brilliant
Now this is an example of a bad self answer, story Id self answered in 6 minutes
3
Q: Webcomic about a boy visited by a young demon who emerges from under his bed and loves cookies

FuzzyBootsI read this within the last 5 years, so somewhere in the 2012-2017 timeframe. I don't remember exactly why I lost track of it... western art style, involves a young boy who has a succubus emerge from under his bed. He winds up getting her to try cookies, and she finds she enjoys them a great deal...

Basically just implies a lack of research effort

9:06 AM
Well you can have a lack of research effort, just then don't put the effort in immediately after posting haha

well yeah

You realise he has 539 answers in story-ids and 111 questions.

Doesn't make that example decent though

Well what I'm saying is how has he had 111 questions that he himself couldn't find!

Oh right yeah getcha
How many were poor self answers like that one too?
I still think his question meant this guy anyway...

9:12 AM
lol, I don't know and I can't be bothered to open 111 questions to find out

Me neither, it's self answers like that though that do rub people up the wrong way

31 total, 18 had an answer score of sub 5

Run a SEDE query or something?

ye
just typed "self answer" in sede

Easy way to do it haha

9:24 AM
"Macklemore predicted S3E10"

9:37 AM
Ugh my old answer edited is getting more upvotes then my new answer...

People see many upvotes and a long post and auto upvote anyway so probs why

Hmm this is true, but 57 SFF viewers and 1 upvote, seems more harsh than usual

True, I'm looking at it now so you may get another one :P

we're a reasonably upvote-y community, it's why we've always got so many questions in the HNQ, guess if it doesn't have the HP tag it doesn't get upvotes...
I bet if you slapped down an old answer on a HP question you'd still get ~10-15 upvotes.

You gotta get that HP tag :P
People love the HP
Wait what was we talking about again?
It's a good old answer though to be fair
Also the older one is on a subject that more people would think about than the new one

9:56 AM
I do love HP sauce

It is good

The old answer is now 2 away from being my top-voted
17 to go until I get a cheeky gold on it.

It does sound like a common question and you have a good answer on it
My highest voted answer is Why did they kill LF in trial and not in secret and it's no where near my best answer

Hmm it didn't get that many passive votes

Mine or yours? And how are you checking this haha

10:02 AM
Mine, 3 passive upvotes, 1 day it got 3 upvotes when an answer bumped it, and it got 3 upvotes when I bumped it today
It's gotten about 1 passive upvote every 1.5 months
Your top answer has suffered in the passive upvotes market.

By passive upvotes do you just mean upvotes since a couple of days after posting?
Terrible though since
I think that's a trend with GoT though, a lot of Q/As get attention immediately and then get next to nothing

Yeah, passive upvotes is upvotes after 30 days, and usually through search engines

10:18 AM
@TheLethalCarrot Since most questions also get asked during the series, that kinda makes sense

Aye but even out of season they can still get quite a few upvotes straight away and then a couple of days later nothing

Off the most recent 5 they've all done pretty well, only really my AL to AC question that wasn't too good but that was still decent

2 hours later…
12:17 PM
Had fondue for lunch at work, I wonder if Planetos has figured out fondue
I could see it being something the mountain clans enjoyed

Ask the question to main :P It works for HP

@Edlothiad Cut off your cock and dip it in cheese?

And on the HP note there's a first post just sat there

The goats will love that

Hahaha

12:25 PM
@TheLethalCarrot Why didn't you take it?

I don't really like reviewing, I don't mind close/reopen votes and suggested edits but that's it really

How come?

Not my cup of tea, plus I've never bothered actually looking into what you're supposed to do in those queues so I'll probably choose the wrong thing haha

@TheLethalCarrot The best guide I've seen: scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/a/10607/68872

Meh like I said I'm not too bothered about that side of things
I don't mind keeping the site clean with close votes and what not

12:31 PM
First posts keep the site clean, first line of defence for flags, delete votes, edits, and great hidden gems.

I know

Damn, I'm going to lose my 4th place spot by years end :/

review spot?

Review :D good one. I'm number one this year by about 1000 reviews... I mean in year rep

I didn't think review was just cos we was talking about it was all haha
To be fair you're in a group of people who are all close

12:51 PM
This year?
ye the 4-6 is pretty close. I would just like to finish this year on the top row, dunno if I'll be as active next year
Is there any reason my if would be working for one condition, but once I put in a second it breaks?

I don't know, I'm not a mind reader :P

(u'30' not in strName) or (u'200' not in strName)
that's the condition
If I comment out everything before the or it works otherwise it does nothing
It works in opposite if I remove the nots, now lets see what happens when I do what you first suggested
Ugh my conditionals were all wrong and you were right all along, mb TLC I clearly got confused yesterday. Thanks for the help
That or there would have to be an and.
Evidently you can read minds, because I told you the wrong thing yesterday and you told me the right thing!

I don't know is the condition basically if (!name.Contains("30") || !name.Contains("200")) ?

That's what I thought I wanted but it's not

Hahaha
What are you actually testing?

1:04 PM
I wanted !(name.contains("30") || name.contains("200"))
I've got 11 switches, and I need to find all 11 of them (they all have a common image), above the common image I read the title of that switch, and the two I want to ignore I have to ignore

Sounds like you're gonna have spaghetti code haha

I implemented the first thing and obviously everything passed the condition because it was an or, but the one I just put is the one you recommended and that one works.
What's spaghetti code?

Just messy code haha

how come you say that?

Oh by switches you mean UI switches? I thought you meant switch statements haha

1:08 PM
Oh no, yeah UI switches
There are no switch statements in Python, you'd have to self implement, so I just did if elif
Another question, is it quicker to do multiple conditions in my if or nested if statements?

Depends though I doubt you'll bottleneck on the if
Write what's most readable and what makes most sense
If Python behaves like C# it's "quicker" to have one if cos if a is false then b is not evaluated in the following if (a && b)

ah kk, I gotchu

1:25 PM
@JarkoDubbeldam it happened!

They heard us

2:25 PM
Quiet day today everyone

Just had a Nothrop F-5E Tiger II jet fly overhead and work, that was cool
I also have 20 minutes to smash this out, may the power of allah bless me

Haha and that is pretty cool
My brother works in the RAF so I get to see the jets quite a lot
Last year the RAF did a tour with the spitfires and what not round the UK and we all got on the roof of our building at work to watch it. Even better cos it's single story so we had to use a ladder to climb up haha

He's a pilot?
I think you mentioned before that he was an engineer but I tend to forget :/

No works in the control tower

Ah yes!

2:37 PM
Morning gents

Mornin'
When this line is in an answer there's a problem "You're the one offering an unconfirmed theory, so the onus is on you to support your claim."

Well it just aint an answer

The top off of the answer sort of is the bottom half is just his response to the comments
I swear that user loves arguing more than you

Are we talking about a specific question? Or in general

That line is from a specific answer but I was meaning the general sense
Answers should clearly involve sources yet instead that user decided to say the questioner should provide them ahha

2:47 PM
lol

I actually think I've seen that user have more arguments than Ed :P

who?

Flater
Though to be fair to him he does come from the land of no sources.

huh... never heard of him

He has answered a few GoT questions but I think he likes to be active on a lot of sites instead of one in particular

2:54 PM
I love arguing with him!

You love arguing haha

he does seem to have quite a few medium rep sites
@TheLethalCarrot truth

3:06 PM
Can we star my I love arguing with him?

Better?

Much :D

Although, you're right. Why did I say "with him"?

You was going to comment on the general case later on?
@Skooba Well done for being the only answer with sources. Just a note though don't the other candidates get neuralyzed? If so you wouldn't do that if they weren't actually candidates.

3:14 PM
@TheLethalCarrot well if they were just dummy candidates (i.e. another test for J to pass as suggested by others) you would still have to neuralyze them. I can't see them being actual MiB agents doing a bit.

@TheLethalCarrot Ye they get neuralised

@Skooba mmhm suppose

Is that supported by the film? I dont recall it happening, though I always assumed it did

yeah we see them getting the "Eye" exam

ah, right

3:16 PM
Though to me it makes more sense to have a common set of "actors" used for every interview and so they wouldn't get wiped
I always assumed they were actual candidates though

those it was so funny as a kid I always asked my why "Zed" got a name and just a letter, I just figured it was because he was the boss. I felt silly when I finally realize that many other languages pronounced "Zee" as "Zed" #ignorantamerican

Hahaha though isn't MiB an American film?

yes
hmmmm
new question!
lol

Haha "Why is Z called "Zed" and not "Zee"?" :P

yup

3:25 PM
It's actually a sort of decent question, though probably with an OoU answer
@Skooba The wikia actually names him Zed whereas the others are all K, J, O etc. so your question as a kid actually makes sense

@TheLethalCarrot the credits list "Kay", "Jay" tho....

@TheLethalCarrot because the English dont know how to say their letters of the alphabet

Well I mean it's called English not American but I'm 2 against 1 here haha
@Skooba Got a link?

@TheLethalCarrot just imdb imdb.com/title/tt0119654/fullcredits
as we dive deeper i do think it might be a legit question

Cos why wouldn't they conflict each other haha
Me too I'm compiling evidence into a question right now haha
Though it appears that Zed is the Canadian pronunciation (wikipedia) so maybe that's why?

3:34 PM
nooooo

Z
Z (named zed or zee ) is the 26th and final letter of the modern English alphabet and the ISO basic Latin alphabet. == Name and pronunciation == In most English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia, the letter's name is zed , reflecting its derivation from the Greek zeta (this dates to Latin, which borrowed X, Y, and Z from Greek, along with their names), but in American English its name is zee , analogous to the names for B, C, D, etc., and deriving from a late 17th-century English dialectal form. Another English dialectal form is...

@TheLethalCarrot do you say aetch or hhhhhhhhaetch?

Can you use it in a sentence? :P

The first letter of hippopotamus is hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaetch

Oh you meant just H, I think the latter

3:37 PM
Okay

@TheLethalCarrot question stealer! :P

You're kid question, I'm taking the adult version!

i should jsut post a real quick verison
and then edit in details

cause im a filthy rep whore

3:43 PM
I just want to point out that if I ever saw this letter in text, I would assume it to be an ampersand and proceed to be really confused when the rest of the word didn't make any sense.

Is it a fancy Z?

It supposed to be a cursive Z

In the Men in Black films Zed is called "Zed" (obviously...). However, the letter [Z is pronounced as](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z#Name_and_pronunciation):

 - Zed: This appears to be the common English form from the UK, Canada, Australia etc.
 - Zee: This appears to be the American-English version used widely in America.

As Men in Black is set in New York, USA and as such you think they's use the American pronunciation.

Looking into this further the [wikia on the agents](meninblack.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Agents) lists them as K, J and O etc. All apart from Zed who
@amflare Ah I think I've seen it before but I'd be confused too
@Skooba Does that cover everything?

@TheLethalCarrot Ctrl+C
Crtl+V
yupp looks perfect

3:48 PM
@Skooba Conrotl?

yup

Posted :P
The only thing I've found English wise is that Agent Oh is played by English actresses
But I don't know how that affects why he was Zed haha
Googled it found a reddit thread...
Actually there are lots of posts if you gogle it

@TheLethalCarrot The best argument I've seen is that it's like NATO pronunciation and done that way to not be phonetically confused with Bee, Cee, Dee, ect.
But thats pure speculation I think

If it was though they'd all be the phonetic version though surely?

4:03 PM
They are all phonetic?
How else do you say Kay and Jay?

K-ah-ee?
idk

It's Kilo and Juliet I believe in the phonetic alphabet

@TheLethalCarrot I didn't it was NATO, I mean operating on the same principle.
NATO-Z is Zulu

I know but you still have B, C, D so I don't think that argument holds much water

fair

4:06 PM
Tee and Pee as well

Aye
I know O is English, I think, so do we know if Zed is the founding member or if there was a Zed before him?

Well they say 50 years ago and Zed is there in numero 3

(ps I don't know much about MiB so excuse my ignorance :P)
So he probably was the first Zed that makes it more confusing then haha

@Skooba Eee
and Gee and Vee

Lee... oh no wait
:P
Bond inspiration?
Also what does this user mean? haha
I thought of the other Zed for a moment. — void_ptr 2 mins ago

4:13 PM
Pulp Fiction?

Ah maybe
Called Zed in the comics on first mention too

@TheLethalCarrot Yeah, it has always been Zed

Aye I was just double checking

I have no idea what the canonicity of MiB is. Does the animated series count?

No idea I'd assume so though
@amflare This one?

4:26 PM
Once we get to MiB3 and the animated, you have many agent names that are not letters
which I'm not sure about
I'd need a non-letter/unique name from the comics to say with any confidence that it all doesn't revolve around letters

Lowell is credited on the comics, the 3 films, an upcoming film, the animated series and a short. So I guess everything is canon?

*american letters

Well there's Alpha isn't there but thats not an agent anymore
I read that the board uses numbers 1-9 and that there's also * who is an alien that sacrificed itself to create the MiBs computer system. However, none of these are agents so the rules will be different

@TheLethalCarrot the wiki says "formerly agent a"
then there was Chief X

So Alpha doesn't contradict the "naming rules" then

4:31 PM
There was an Agent Troy
An alien who didn't take an initial for some reason. I can't recall where, the animated I think?

I don't know

Oh yeah, MiB: The Series

Agent L is sometimes called Elle according to the wikia
Valorum has answered and to be honest I'm not sure how it answers the question :/

hes basically saying the whole question is based on the misunderstanding that Zed has a "letter designation".

But with no evidence at all

4:36 PM
I suppose
Is Alpha a comic character?

Animated only I think, though I only know what I've researched in the last hour haha

Hmm....
idk... I can't spend anymore time on this since I'm at work. I might type up an answer this evening to the effect of "we don't know, but here are some ideas supported by the choices the writer made"

Just a note Kay is Kay in the comics see my linked panel in the question
I finish work in 20 mins :P

@TheLethalCarrot lucky bastard

@TheLethalCarrot remember how I usually finish hours before you? I only just left :(

4:46 PM
@Edlothiad Unlucky, long day for you

Ye, have to run this test over the weekend, it’s probably already crashed...

We have a 30 hour DB import we need to do that keeps breaking.
And it always breaks with not enough time left in the weekend to try again

Can you not run it in sections?

Thats what I said

4:48 PM
I'm off anyway, I'll be back to see what you all find over the weekend ;P

cheers mate, catch ya next week

5:01 PM
@TheLethalCarrot Python does shortcircuiting
but not a or not b should do that too
first evaluate not a then only if that isn't true, evaluate not b.

5:12 PM
wait no, I was right, shouldn't that be an AND not OR?
nooo thats an XOR
idk
back to work

5:30 PM
@TheLethalCarrot it’s probably already crashed

are you drunk already?

Nah it’s below freezing so my fingers are struggling to move
I don’t usually drink on Fridays, but tonight i’m Too nervous about this test so i’m Going to get wrecked
Shoot I forgot to email the prof again... shooting myself in the foot here

what test?

5:48 PM
The test i’m Running over the weekend that’s littered with bugs so is probably sat idle :/
If I recall correctly, the guy that just answered TLC’s question is the king of speculation

6:13 PM
ah, gotcha
yeah, I phrased it as a question, but we all know the answer

2 hours later…
7:44 PM
Better than Valorums speculation though

Ayy cha boi!!!
And I have by far the highest monthly LAs anyways so I don't really care

2 hours later…
10:10 PM
Room Poll: Do we a "universe tag" to apply all ASoIaF and GoT questions?
2

Star this for no
Star this for yes
My star is on no, because it's (as TLC loves to say) Two separate continuities
They aren't under 1 universe
Who's pegging you to this anyways? Who said anything, if it was Mith, he's not read or watched it so...

I was going off Rand's meta post about American Gods
lol just trying to get on that star board again

WELL WE CAN'T ALL FORCE OUR SELVES ON THERE!
Rand's beloved American gods tv series will follow in a similar path, he will learn it needs a tv-show tag.
We have two sets of canons, each have their own universe

that was kinda my first thought
and there was previous metas on it
omg im 15 minutes past my leave time!!! AHHHH

I still need to figure out the sub-tags I think would be appropriate in case the books reach classic status at some point (if they even do) and was going to share them on here
@Skooba I worked an hour and 30 minutes extra today, I was not happy

10:30 PM
Oi Oi, where did I read that GRRM expresses distaste for the show?
@Edlothiad Now that was unexpected...
@TheLethalCarrot @JarkoDubbeldam @amflare @Aegon look at my link above, we're doing star polls again!
Or just say what you want.

@Edlothiad roughly 4 days ago? It got starred so you can go look in there

@amflare I did, de nada
Wait we want a universe tag? guys seriously?

er...
I got confused

There was that generic hollywood one
@amflare Ok remind me to call everyone out every time I see a vote :D

haha

10:34 PM
Then there's the "dee show is dee show and dee books is dee books, dey be to deeferent tellings of dee same storee"
