Q: Why has this character dark hair?

FedericoSpoilers for s6e10 and season 7 of Game of Thrones. I have tagged this question also with a-song-of-ice-and-fire because I am interested about eventual book details that didn't make it into the show. I know that in the books Jon's ancestry is still a mystery, but I suppose it won't be much diff...

@Aegon, I didn't know that SE questions would be a list of inconsistencies...
They are now
I understand that people who were used to high quality writing were everything was well in-universe explained are a little lost when the quelity suddently drops down
They could have done better things
Like put Viserion in Drogon's position
And Let Night King lift the corpse magically
Or Let Jon flee in some other way than having Benjen show up
So it's definitely their fault.
08:47
yes it is
I also doubt the survival of Jon in such low temperatures
the chain is ridiculous indeed
09:04
I mean East Watch might have such a chain
As they have a harbor so chains are needed to defend it
But NK hasn't yet looted East Watch
So where did the chain come from?
Did they forge it with fire and steel? I doubt it
no fire
"Ser Waymar's mouth became a hard line. "No fire."" ;)
Ser Waymar Royce agrees
there are several chains and they are quite long (100 m each) and thick
could a wight go swim in deep water and attach the chains?
They could I suppose
Given that they come out of water easily
09:22
but they are stopped by water, don't they?
for some reason, they don't want to go in water
Another flaw in plot
One moment, Water stops them until Dany can come
And then they are swarming in and out of water
Dragging people inside
Dragging dragons outside
:D
at Hardhome...
Who ever said show had consistency?
Books at least have a report from Cotter Pyke where he reports that there are dead things on land, and dead things in the water
And if they can't cross water, how did they threaten essos? Why do Essosi have legend of Azor Ahai?
true
they can resurrect animals, so they certainly can resurrect large animals to use them as vehicles

I was thinking about an answer about why bows wouldn't work in extreme cold for [this question](https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/167647/why-dont-the-white-walkers-have-archers-in-their-armies) but them you reminded me that the temperature is not that low (since Jon and crew survived a few days)
@BebsV A Few days or just one day. We do not know. You can build an answer and note that Jon and his crew survived nevertheless so it couldn't be freezing cold
yes, so my answer based on the fact that bows can't work at extreme low temperatures is not good because the temperature beyond the wall is not as low as I thought. I expected -30 to -60 °C, a temperature where a wood bow can't stay functional and humans dressed like Jon's crew is can't survive that long without moving

@M&TVFeeds this needs a real answer

@Skooba What do you think about "Steffon Baratheon black of hair, Robert Baratheon black of hair, Joffrey Baratheon golden head" routine?
@Aegon i was yelling at my tv a lot... and then my wife, cause she ate it all up and thought it has been a great season
If Joff was supposed to have black hair, Why didn't Ned remember Rhaenys ? Daughter of Jocelyn Baratheon and Aemon Targaryen?
@Aegon it seems black hair is dominant in most cases, hence why observant people could pick up that it would be odd for all three Baratheon children to be golden hair
She had silver hair, not the dominant black hair from Lady Jocelyn?
True
Hence why Tyrion thought that even if one of the Princelings was blackhead, no one would have suspected
And Rhaenys was the only child, so she didn't have any blackheaded sibling
@Aegon exactly.
@Aegon since your here.... how are dragons known to be WW killers... just because of the fire?
11:57
Probably
If fire kills them
The thing that breathes fire shall be their bane
people keep going on the theories the connections between Vlayrian steel, obsidian/dragon glass, and dragons
saying the dragon fire is what ties it together
When most indications is that Valryian Steel is made with magic spells and obsidian is also magical
GRRM himself said obsidian is connected with fire and magic
Valyrian steel still is the same
exactly
And so are the dragons
So the connection would be fire and magic
i've seen to that people theorize the "secret" to Valyrian steel is that it is made with obsidian... but its not like obsidian was rare, we see loads of examples of it. it was just forgotten that it could kill WW...
12:02
No that's silly
It has been said many times that Valyrian steel is just steel
Only difference is, it is folded many times on itself
Making it lighter, Stronger and sharper
And forged with spells
Giving it magical properties
Changing obsidian to Steel is Alchemy. and even the guild of Alchemists don't claim to have that power
yeah they claimed the reason was of the "smokey color" and the "sharp edge" and I'm like.... MAGIC SPELLS..... MAGIC.... THIS IS A FANTASY
Smokey color is not universal
Only Ice has that
Wave like structure is result of repeated self-folding
not changing it, but adding it to it, like one would the carbon
See real life Damascus steel for example
yup
12:04
It has the same rippling patterns
Pity the art has died out
Last night episode has me really upset and seeing all the confusion and crackpot theories the new season is spawning
It would have been nice to have a Husky and a Damascus steel sword at a comic con or something
D&D have gone full fan-service mode

Can you people stop spoiling GoT already from the HNQ? Thanks.
@Aegon haha so i was half expecting jon to come out of the lake and have blue eyes and ride the dragon... cause that was a theory too
@Lilienthal The people "spoiling" it aren't here. If you don't want to be spoiled after an episode has aired, perhaps consider disconnecting from the internet for a while?
@Lilienthal There are many meta posts about this. We try, but there are too many users to account for
@Skooba Jon has plot armor...er plot scuba gear.
@Aegon cause then if he brought back by both the fire god and the ice god.... ice and fire.... derp
@Aegon same device bronn and jaime had

@Skooba Seven hells. Kill me already
Don't tell me it is on reddit

Q: Is there a way from keeping GoT spoilers out of the Hot Network Questions?

sgfIs there any sensible way to stop questions whose titles spoil information about new Game of Thrones episodes from appearing in the hot network questions? Not everyone has seen the last episode.

@Skooba Stop spoiling my shows please
@Lilienthal, I don't remember Skooba spoiling the show

@Lilienthal Its not our fault. Take it up with the company and the HNQ

JavierI'm currently watching Star Trek TNG. While skimming through the Stack Exchange hot questions list, I saw a question in scifi.SE that spoiled the death of a character. @Skooba Official policy is that the site is meant to police its own questions so yes, it kind of is your fault.
"Why did this character do this in this episode"
What on earth is that?
@Lilienthal Like I said, we do. there is a lot of meta on this
Just to appease some people who can't handle spoilers like adults
Again mate, no one "spoiling" it is here. The ones who spoil it are new users
And that gets taken care of by the community
I'm talking about your HNQ questions mate.
12:20
@Lilienthal Please do not come in here and bash a site that you are not active on (or at least that I can tell because your profile only has Workplace listed).
Not actual spoilers.
@Lilienthal They are not OUR HNQ....
the HNQ is its own tihng
@Lilienthal Which ones of them are spoilersome?
Is Jon Snow having Dark hair a spoiler for you?
@Randal'Thor @AnkitSharma If you are around, please offer some guidance.
What's next? "Does sun rise in the East in Westeros?" also spoilersome?
Would have been nice if he would have cited at least one question which spoiled it for him
But oh well
Back to Work!!!!
12:23
@Lilienthal You are mod, by all means please raise this issue with the CMs
but please be nice in here
There are only two AGOT questions in HNQ right now aFAIK
One is "Is Daenerys' rescue possible wrt timelines?"
Second is "Why does Jon have Dark hair?"
Neither appear to be spoilerish to me
I think they left...

Q: Did HBO change the title?

Mat's MugS7E6 was leaked, and we've seen questions titling the episode "Death is the Enemy" - and that phrase is actually uttered by one of the characters in the episode. Yet when the episode actually aired, it did so as "Beyond the Wall". Did HBO change the title at the last minute? Why? What gives?

Yeah that bit is very amusing
of Workplace no less.... I mean talk about "soft" SE sites
I think the only two softer ones are Parenting and IPS now.
Lol....
Could be Jon skeet's secret account
you never know
@Aegon who knows... glad they left.
Puts me as the RO in a bad spot. Flagging Moderator messages doesn't work out too well from what I hear.
Aren't you on Workplace SE?
@Skooba How come?
12:29
@Aegon Yes, funnily enough, my one big question there... THEY answered.
@Aegon Well because all Mods are chat mods, so it gets weird I think... just rumors I've heard from some of the older issues that happened in Mos Eisley.
Probably call him out on their meta?
nah
its done now
Makes you wonder how did a guy with that temperament get elected to Mod spot.
this is at least the second time this year people have attacked SFF for spoilers.
@Aegon, from the things I saw in that SE, being aggressive is probably a requirement to be a mod in workplace :-)
12:36
@Skooba No idea why do people mind spoilers tbh
@BebsV Wouldn't know. I am not on that specific site
History, SFF and SO are the only communities I regularly visit
@Aegon, movies too?
@BebsV I am not active there or visit it regularly.
@Aegon Like me... only there to make some sense out of the show for that audience
Nowadays tho, Season time so I follow the question which get posted here
@Skooba People there believe "Power resides where men believes it resides" and "Robert took the throne with his hammer" way too seriously
It's almost like a religion there
Can get kind of frustrating

Q: Did the army of the dead wait for the lake to refreeze or for something else?

King of NESSo, after watching the show last night-something really didn't make sense to me. Then it charges with minimal forces against a small g...

12:39
@Aegon and reddit theories, which I admit I find fun a lot, but most of them have very large holes
@SF&FFeeds perfect timing lol
The reddit theory is that the NK has been waiting for a dragon all this time, which is why they have been marching so slow
LOLOLOLOL
As if he knew about Dragons
percisely
Waits for Dragons to come for months, shoots down the weakest one instead of the strongest one which was a sitting duck
dumb guy NK!
I mean the only plausible thing I can get from show-verse is that since we see NK interact with Bran is a vision. He has other visions
@Aegon yup questions on that have popped up already too
On both MTV and SFF
12:45
I thought rant questions were not allowed...
@BebsV they are, just get closed as POB usually
13:08
Why do people feel the need to ask such basic questions. Especially when it's things like "why did they wait". There's things you know no one knows because it's just how the show was designed and then you get in trouble for saying "Because the plot required it"
@Edlothiad It's a good question imo. Why wait when they later depicted wights coming out of Water? Unless you had some other motives for waiting because cold water obviously doesn't stop you. Still, Would get closed as Future Works Policy here because it shall be answered only in future episodes (If they bother to answer it at all). Show has gone in an illogical direction, Viewers will naturally call them out
Because of plot armour. That's why
@Aegon It's interesting to note but not something that will be told IN-SHOW but rather something the creators would have to "invent"
@Aegon which ruined it for to use this episode to answer "can WW swim" question
cause we still don't know
@Skooba, they definitely can
it is confirmed when they attached the chain
@BebsV walking under water =/= swiming....
13:15
I don't know how deep is the lake, but they had to go to the bottom, and swim back up
swimming is necessary
except if the lake is very shallow
@Skooba for?
@AnkitSharma Spoilers in the HNQ. Seeing if I could have another mod, as it was a mod.
@Skooba is there any way to estimate how deep is the lake ?
Ohhh
If you have thin skin for spoiler, don't come online
I am tired of people getting spoiled for no reason
@Skooba If they can't swim, how did they threaten Essos?
13:20
@BebsV im sure that someone will
@Aegon hmmm....
Why does Essos have this whole myth of AA and a religion surrounding it?

Q: Is it justifiable to spoil a series over placing a title "too off"?

ZaibisI started like 5 months ago watching Game of Thrones with a friend of mine. So it comes we are right now in season 6 episode 8. @Aegon i see quotes in my future
WE get this meta post every season , grrrr
@Skooba And not to mention, Cotter Pyke's report
"Dead things ashore, dead things in the water"
13:21
@Aegon what O.o
@AnkitSharma Yeah we have had it at least twice this season, and people coming to our chat to blame the whole site.
@Aegon but that doesn't mean 1) white walkers, and 2) they were swimming
@Skooba shoot the messenger :p
@Skooba It doesn't, but it proves that Water doesn't stop them
Or scare them
I think we got twice too and I am sure few chat stuff too
They can get across water just fine
13:23
They have Aquaphobia
@Skooba Hey cut that guy some slack. He's a mod at some of the most hardcore SE sites
@Aegon time for some book research
Water can't kill them but they cry seeing water, like girl see cockroach
@Aegon Hey I told him to be nice... let's try to not bring ourselves to that level.... :P
2
I am being serious. You can't prove otherwise
So technically, I am being nice
13:24
Lets change the topic
Like: Is viserion a white walker or a whight?
@AnkitSharma
Re: "Water can't kill them but they cry seeing water, like girl see cockroach"
@Aegon that's giving me brain shivering
And I have sister and one of them have Herpetophobia and can loose shit after seeing Lizard
So phobia don't kill you but you can't do it either
Herpetophobia seems to be common in Westeros
Everyone fears Winged lizards
Not everyone
Not white walker
And Tyrion and Jon can pat tehre back too
@AnkitSharma wight. from what i gather the White Walker, are the guys who can command stuff
13:28
@Skooba Yup. Others = White Walkers...
Wights = Zombies
@Skooba Night King don't touch to make wights but he touched Caster's son to make them white walker
@AnkitSharma This is correct
There is reddit debate about it
@Aegon It's impossible to flag a mod. They just reject the flag themselves. Mods are effectively immune from saying anything and CMs are immune from saying anything. (Source: have flagged mods for being rude, nothing ever happens)
@Edlothiad That seems to be abuse of power
13:32
Making viserion wight will make him too weak in compare to other dragons, so from strong figth prospective he should become white walker with ice breath
@Aegon You can't touch them. They're mods. You can only eat them!
Hey @Jolenealaska!
@AnkitSharma He definitely is the equivalent of a walker. Also no way he can breathe fire
@Edlothiad don't throw generic statement based on single event which most of us are not aware of
People keep saying "Wightserion is going to blow the wall down with fire"
13:34
@Edlothiad that will look cool
@AnkitSharma Multiple events. But yes it is a generic statement, although one that's probably a pretty reasonable statement
I was just catching up on the transcript. I'm not surprised that I'm not the only one to be disappointed in the newest episode. Some great lines, though.
@Edlothiad depend on what you flagged and your intention of it and situation
@Jolenealaska Hound's dialogues?
13:34
Because revengeful flagging should be rejected
@AnkitSharma Calling a site soft and claiming that their community can't be arsed to moderate their site is rude imo
@AnkitSharma Double Standards
Not revengeful
Alright everyone....
@Aegon Yes, and a few others of that group. I've only seen the episode once, but I was struck by great lines a few times.
13:35
The situation has passed.
@Jolenealaska I am so disappointed that my disappointment is disappointed with me to be this less disappointing
@Aegon Well, that's why I flagged it and it promptly got deleted.
@Jolenealaska You mean every time the hound said something? :D
Oh that's what Aegon said
D'oh!
I love the Hound and Tormund. Best conversation in TV show history
@NapoleonWilson Oh goodie. I didn't notice
@Edlothiad "I like dick" - Tormund Giantsbane.
13:37
@Aegon I don't think these are all plot-holes in the actual definition of a plot-hole. But they are erroneous
@Skooba Would have been a great entry in "Famous Last words of Westeros". Pity he didn't die
I love Tormund in Books
Especially every time he says HAR, I go HAR!
@Aegon I was replying to ed, as he is taking thing to his angles only. And I agree that the mod came here crossed line and I appreciate how @Skooba handled it
@Aegon Also Thoros was the "red-shirt"...
It would be a great name to have on the site. Tormund Giantsbabe
@Edlothiad thanks, anything else?
13:40
I hate how it was obvious that the other guys with the seven famous, in Jon's team were red shirts!
So the unaccept event which hindered my progress to epic badge got accepted again yesterday
I have no idea what are red-shirts
red shirts are extras that are supposed to die
@Skooba I told you skooba. He's coming back.
Ah
@BebsV yeah htey leave the wall with 7 but then oh wait nah we've some other randos too
@Edlothiad They burned his body... maybe he will force ghost it
13:42

Q: Do Star Trek characters wearing red shirts have the highest death rate on the original show?

matt_blackIn many episodes of the original series of Star Trek (Star Trek TOS) a team will be selected to beam down to the planet (or wherever the action was in the episode). This will have major characters from the series (like Bones Kirk or Spock) who are (obviously) going to survive whatever adventure a...

@AnkitSharma Conversations over and I'm not having this argument with you. We both know why, lets just enjoy our GoT chat :)
@Edlothiad my pleasure :)
Wow, how many times now has Jon Snow cheated death?! Of all the characters in GoT he has the thickest plot armor. Daenerys rescuing Jon Snow & friends was really cool, but didn't have the same impact as Jon being resurrected, or Sansa intervening at The Battle of the Bastards. I'm sure many viewers saw it coming & expected there would be a Deus ex Draconis.
@Edlothiad Can lord of fire regenerate his burnt body too?
Walking Dead also has used red shirts all the time... you know there will be action, and no famous character can die, so they introduce new sudden characters
13:44
2
Q: Can the dead cross the Wall?

JimmeryAt one point Benjen Stark states that The Wall is not just ice and stone. Ancient spells were carved into its foundations. Strong magic to protect men from what lies beyond. And while it stands, the dead cannot pass. However, at the beginning of the series... Also in the latest episode...

@AnkitSharma Nah, but just wait he'll come.
@RobertF yeah my wife.. "Just have the dragons show up already"
Death of resurrected guy have the least chance to die again.
but I thought when he went down in the ice, they would bring him back as a ice dragon rider.... that was crazy reddit theory
and D&D seem keen on reddit theories
@Skooba I was shouting the same, "I am going to sleep now, bring the dragons"
@Skooba too weird for even GoT
@Skooba they don't have Martin so they are using fan fiction to write stuff
2
I wish they never brought Coldhand like this
13:46
@AnkitSharma thats what i've been saying lol
There was no mistery and he was riding lame horse, meh
yeah not a moose
#WeNeedBadassColdhandRidingAMoose
That's why I am saying 100th of time GoT need to be remade in animation
@AnkitSharma Not the first time. They read fan theories on Reddit very seriously np.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/25lk42/…
@Aegon But I heard somewhere that Hodor story was done same as Martin's vision
13:49
I was hoping we'd see Jon Snow crawl out of the ice lake as a Wight, blue eyes & snarling, and then at the Night King's bidding, mount the undead Viserion... This would have been a dramatic turn of events, but probably too bold even for D&D. Too bad, would have been cool to see an undead Jon Snow realizing his new fate & having an existential crisis, interacting with his new undead comrades (lots of grunting no doubt), take on an undead girlfriend.
@AnkitSharma Martin has a similar idea but it won't be exactly the same
At least I hope so
Wow I am ruling star board on Scifi chatroom \o/
I almost misspelled it ruining
He kinda confirmed it to Michael Ventrella ventrellaquest.com/2014/04/20/got-got
@RobertF HAH! and then he is even more the song of ice and fire because he was brought back by both the fire god and ice god
Martin: I always wanted to be an elevator operator. If the writing thing hadn’t worked out…

We both laughed and went on to our rooms.

The final time we ended up together, the conversation went like this:

Me: I finally figured out why you have a character named “Hodor.”

Martin: Oh?

Me: I was thinking about your comment about wanting to be an elevator operator. It’s clear to me now that “Hodor” is short for “Hold the door.”
13:51
@Aegon I don't read books, so I need to read Wikipedia synopsis for it or wait for my dream animated show
@AnkitSharma You should.
Read the books
I am not a reader
You will love them
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies," said Jojen. "The man who never reads lives only one"
I can read if they have lots of images ;)
There are Graphic novels
13:53
But I am too broke lately to start any new hobby which need money :D
And if I start reading Graphic novel then I will start with Alan Moore
@Aegon I've just acquired them. I'm going to read them soon
@Aegon Where's that from?
Is there a scifi question about GoT novel vs graphic novel differences
@Edlothiad I haven't read the Graphic novels :[ Well Except first two D&E ones
@NapoleonWilson The Quote about hodor? from Ventrella's blog. Link shared above
I need to rewatch last night's episode - I got the impression Sandor Clegane climbed into the little boat alone with his zombie captive. Is he going to row all the way to King's Landing with that thing for company? Maybe he could convince it to row for him.
13:56
@NapoleonWilson A Dance with Dragons - Bran III
@RobertF probably just going out to the larger ship
where dany and jon are
Oh Jojen's quote is from where Bran says
Yeah there is a ship there. They showed it. Targ sails and all
@Aegon No, the message I replied to.
Ah got it.
@Skooba Okay, that sounds like I guessed then.
@NapoleonWilson I don't know which one is that
13:58
@Aegon i got it covered :P
The Wights are very scary - until we saw one hoisted onto the Hound's shoulder like a naughty 4 year being carried to time out.
Ah okay
@RobertF they were scary until they were troped into zombies
@Aegon You can click on the little arrow thing in front of a message to see what it was a reply to. You can as well hover over the message to see the one it was a reply to highlighted.
my wife even asked me "Did the Hound get bit"
