well, as @Edlothiad says, somes answers can be more usefull, but to less people. So the upvote have more value, but only 100 people upvote and not 1000
@TheLethalCarrot Well every newbie that comes along, sees it and goes "I want to upvote this, it has helped me greatly, oh I need an account, well I'll probably get more help" and then proceeds to create an account an upvote it, upvotes it.

basically, what happened is that a is lazily executed. So the results aren't in yet. So when the second line zips along a, b is modified, a is evaluated with the new b.

yeah some don't really need, but it always helps and a new answer that provides supporting evidence through quotes is always going to get a +1 from me. That one in particular did really need them. I can't believe that old answer had as many upovtes as it did.
