I don't have an answer, except to suggest looking at tribes that have little contact with 'civilization'. My personal opinion, FWIW, is that the nuclear family is a relatively new idea. Children would be raised by the tribe/extended family, instead of a couple in isolation. So the "father figure" might not be the actual father (as Homer says, "it's a wise child that knows its own father), but an uncle or other tribe member(s) good at teaching kids...
