that's pretty much it
unless the S.M.A.R.T statistics show the number of times the drive heads were locked due to motion
but that's of course not definitive, I can shake my mbp in order to lock it's hd heads.
visible damage is about as good as it gets.

Never hurts to run a hardware test before buying anything.

@bmike Tried cleaning in various ways, no beans. So I resigned myself to having no sound and went to turn back on the vibrate functions instead (which I turned off on day 1). A couple of minutes of vibrating the phone setting various alerts etc seems to have dislodged whatever was causing the ground and now it works again!

Well, that was an interesting few days is irritating iphone behaviour. I wrote it up into a jeopardy Q

Q: iPhone dock connector problems, with and without accessories

stuffeI started to experience problems with my iPhone that seem to be related to the dock connector. Upon plugging my iPhone into my (officially supported) car stereo, I started to get the message "This accessory is not supported by iPhone" on the screen. Didn't think much of it as I only use it for...

Hi @Ethereal
@stuffe Howdy!
A new face to Chat :) How's things?
@stuffe Not a new face. Things are very hard!
New to me :)

Hey Mike
@Ethereal Bummer (unless you're enjoying the hardness)
Your geezer meme has infected my brain, @stuffe .
:)
You need the accent next. I'll find an example
… and minions. Minions of geezer would be cool.
A geezers minion would be an Oik I guess.
14:23
diamond geezer!
indeed
NO WAY
that's a little too much praise for me. I'll strive for being a bit eccentric, an OK guy.
What type of geezer you are depends, as you can see, very much on context ;)
that's too funny
Don't ask that question, I'll close it….
Now, see, I told you I'd do that...
14:32
:)
Have you heard of Ray Winstone?
not ringing a bell
He's a proper geezer. Got the accent just right. You might have seen him in a few films if you've seen any british ones recently.
Although the googles tell me he was in the departed as Frenchy
that was a fun movie - might have to queue it soon
Hee hee - haven't heard that phrase in a while
14:41
I never find hard great, but some girls do.
twss - bah dmm dmm pshh
I hear many females are do indeed find the challenge of difficulty to be very rewarding.
Is that not what you meant..?
@stuffe I was going to say I hear that from guys way more than from girls, but to each her own.
(and his own of course as appropriate)
Each to his own. Said the lady to the bishop.

Q: How to always show "Library" in the Finder its "Go"-Menu without holding a modifier key?

user8551I often use the "Library" folder in my home folder ~/. The Library folder there (~/Library/) is shown (unhidden), and that is not the question. I would like to also always show the menu point "Library" in the Finder menu under the word "Go". Normally it only shows when I hold the Option ⌥ key th...

Has anyone been able to get Library to be visible in Mountain Lion? I must be missing something...
18:54
chflags nohidden Library, but that's probably not what you are asking?
19:09
@patrix Visible in Finder's go menu was what I should have written
Yeah, I thought so. And no, I don't know of a way either (but then I don't think I've ever used the "Go" menu to go to standard folders anyway)

Go is useful, it always remembers where you went last. If you only ever use it for ~/library, it's a decent hack for occasional use.

@JasonSalaz Ah, what about for an SSD?
eh?
oh, right, the drive heads
In that case, all bets are off :).
@NathanGreenstein True, but strange to see that Apple has included liquid damage detectors, but not drop ones
@JasonSalaz I see, interesting, thanks :)
There are no drop detectors that are sensitive enough for impact at such a short distance. They'd be triggered simply by motion.
drop detectors are case damage, that's pretty much it
Hehe, seems you're right
Strange how the non-answer got more upvotes than the answer:

A: How come Dropbox gets an icon in Finder sidebar?

HiltmonThe dropbox installer puts one there and the google drive installer does not. Just drag a folder into the sidebar and it will stick, no installer necessary.

Should I edit my question to be more clear?

@Baumr A trained technician can tell when components are crushed or deformed due to excessive acceleration or force.
The marks are distinctive but differ in terms of the protective feet being bent, screws being pinched and too loose (or far too tight) when you remove case and parts doing a repair. Internal parts like battery screw loops and bottom case snaps will shear on large drops.
Hairline cracks may appear in the plastic around the display and the display hinge will be skew / hinges bent / sub-millimeter gaps are easily noticed when a customer places a mac on the genius bar even before a word is spoken.
Lastly, the aluminum frame will deform and bend in the weakest places, so you will know where to look on each model for the "less strong" places like ethernet port openings and such for minor bends that show a past drop or crush in luggage, backpack, etc.
23:58
@Baumr I did it for you :)
