Hey, Apple bros. Is there an app for controlling an Apple TV with a Mac?
It's frustrating having my Macbook on my lap but having to grab my phone to go to the next netflix episode since apple doesn't make a native remote app for OS X
@MDMarra Great question - never heard of one, so why not ask it...
@JasonSalaz yup - i tried it when a friend that worked for google suggested it, but I tried it when it was just hatching and too much was broken, not working, not designed, getting into place.
It falls under the domain of shopping questions. We generally handle them case-by-case, but if it's specific: "help me control my appletv from a computer" is better than "suggest a remote app"
@MDMarra Yes - you will get mocked or worse if you ask (what's the best X or even what's the best X for Y type person).
You'll want to think through the precise requirements you have (those are simple in your case - you want Remote app for OS X instead of iOS) and do a little research to rule out any obvious answers.
It's fun seeing all those data collection services and which ones will integrate with the others and what parts of out data they lock in their web portal silos.
There are loads of apps, some do loads of sports, most are for outdoor GPS style automated tracking, with limited options for inputting say an indoor swim or cross trainer session etc.
@NathanGreenstein The data is stuck in it, and it's limited to the (in the UK at least) really expensive "Wahoo" ANT+ tranceiver
I have found other apps that can send to Strava, but none that can take data from it.
Strava is nice, but very focussed on bike and run (why have 2 apps, when they are both free?) - it's not all that good for indoor sessions etc.
However, because the Bike and Run bits are nice, it might be nice to use them for that purpose, and shuttle the data into a more fully featured area like iCardio etc.
Ah, I see. Never tried to use it for indoor stuff. Their site has a GPX export feature but you have to do it manually for each ride. Fwiw, the only difference afaik between the two Strava apps is defaults; both work for everything.
iCardio works with the Garmin ANT+ key, which is half the price of the Wahoo one, but very few apps use it. At least iCardio has lots of API linked options for sharing data, but unlike Strava which is import only, it's export only. Very few bidirectional sync options between apps
The whole system is a mess. Buy an expensive transceiver that works with apps like Strava, or with a little frig buy a cheaper one that works with less apps but from which you can export into Strava etc etc - it's all so horrible. And then there's the mess of different apps and transceivers now being compatible with the various sensors - I thought that was the point of having a standard!?
No no, the point of having a standard is so that companies have something that everyone can agree to ignore so that they don't accidentally forget to lock you into their own ecosystem.
I'm trying to find a single app that will track GPS suited activities like an outdoor run or ride, and indoor gym/swim so all my data is in one place. Sadly the more comprehensive the feature set, the more limited the UI etc - the single use apps like Strava do a better job in use, but their data is wasted.
@stuffe RunMeter/WalkMeter/CyceMeter - all the same code with different icon and slightly different shuffling of the presets. Get one of the apps and use for all your activities.
The general lack of swimming aids is appalling too, bar a few single purpose watches there is no sensor for pool use that will record useful stuff like strokes/length, number of lengths etc, and waterproof heartrate monitors are like Unicorn droppings.
Been wearing it for month and a half. It's the real deal. Fitbit doesn't do much for me, Jawbone up was a disaster - great app and potential, but HW was so bad.
