I'm looking at getting a MBP (first Mac notebook purchase since 2010), and I'm wondering what the collected wisdom is these days on AppleCare. Worth it?

@Daniel Assuming you intend to keep it longer term, I personally would go for AppleCare, especially since in most cases most of the internals are soldered in. Don't forget also you get some coverage for accidental damage too. That said, if you purchase it from a store that sells extended warranty plans you may want to consider doing that instead of AppleCare (depending on cost and duration of plan).
What MBP model are you considering? You could also opt for a refurbished model:
You could put the money you save towards the AppleCare instead.

@LangLangC Well, a couple of days earlier I did look at a video on taking apart the current 4K iMacs, so I wasn't working totally blind. But that's why I spent a couple of hours, just wanting to take extra care in the absence of having a live reference point.
Anyway, I've only just arrived home to find the power back on, so will fire this thing up shortly to run the memory tests etc. :)

@Monomeeth I'm looking at the MJLQ2LL/A (the only one they're still selling with old-style ports). The education price for a new machine is only a bit higher than the refurb price, so I was leaning away from the refurb

@Daniel I think that's a good choice! :) It's highly rated and still very popular.
