Ooooh redesign
also, yay event

2 hours later…
16:55
Spring Forward (or so they say)
Wooo! Apple Retail/Apple China gets the open
I need to get over there sooner rather than later.
Have I missed anything?
This guy is a great speaker
17:11
@Undo Hey - the pressure of speaking at a live Apple event - I'll give anyone one or two passes the first time they are up.
@bmike I wasn't being sarcastic - he was doing really well
Especially given where he was
So Apple TV update?
cheaper?
$69. Holy crap.
Cool - sorry for misinterpreting your intent. I must have let my twitter stream color what I thought you were saying.
if I had a big TV I would go get one
@bmike ah no problem :)
700 million iPhones. Dat's a bunch of iPhones.
That's a whole lot of iPhones.
Someone should estimate out how much raw material is in all of those
17:14
@Undo You could do it in wolfram alpha quite easily on the web.
Now Apple partners are thinking about Apple Pay correctly. Vending machines, movie theaters, snacks, etc...
@bmike The hard part would be finding materials for each model, then finding the ratios of iPhone models sold
@Undo estimate - start somewhere, and post it - people can refine your estimates if they have better ideas or data.
true
I've only seen one car with CarPlay. And it was in Moscone West :P
@Undo Yup - and Tim's speech writer needs to fix his wording on Home Kit. Can anyone point to even 5 home kit apps on the store today?
Live event: apple.com/live
2
@bmike I have one on my iPod, eventually I'll release it. I know I'm not the only one
Really it's an awesome API
... ResearchKit?
17:20
@Undo Tim said "making better" not "in development for future release"
@bmike true, although "making better" sounds better :P
So this is a survey platform?
whoa
@Undo A whole lot more
I'm gonna get this and it's gonna tell me I have Parkinson's.
@Undo Or that you need to go for a run
Whoa. That's cool
This is going to be integrated on the watch
Err... I could think of a couple things
They're doing a whole bunch better on the stream this year
17:26
> Live streaming video requires Safari 5.1.10 or later on OS X
@Caleb oh, forgot about that.
Punks. Is there a REASON this can't work in the latest Chrome or Firefox releases on Linux?
Prolly. Is it a good one? Likely not :P
@Caleb Probably lets them manage the bandwidth of the streaming servers.
whoa
Is this a two-hour event, or just one-hour?
'cause they're gonna have to get to that watch quick
17:31
@Undo You think they're going to talk about a watch today? :-)
@Daniel I hope so
But I'd take a 12" Macbook too
:D
here we go...
I thought the event was just to announce changes to how the operating systems handle Daylight Savings Time.
3
video >:D
it's... a bubble
Gold?
That looks like a concept.
Like something that can't be done. And apparently they did it.
Thing looks thinner than a current-gen Macbook Air
different charger
yup. 4mm thinner
Wonder what that keyboard feels like
Show me a slow motion video of it
wow
I love how if you asked 100 people to estimate what Apple will talk about for the first hour and easily 99 to 100% would get less than 5% of the time correct.
Retina. 12"
this can't be cheap
... whaaaaat?
17:39
Time to eBay my Retina 13 - no way I'm passing on the new hotness.
My dad said he'd prolly buy one of these if they come out today.
I'll be a fan of this MacBook.
no fan. Wow
You can't possibly solder that thing
Mobile processor
(right?)
What's that mean, though?
9 hours. That works.
Not even a Thunderbolt port. Interesting
that's cool.
hmmmmm no magsafe? :(
bi directional USB C - pretty sweet
Jin
Jin
12" looks nice
17:48
Still no price
Interesting they are still avoiding touch screens in their laptops.
@Jin It hits most of my pain points with all the existing MacBook Pro
@Caleb I've used touch-screen laptops before - I don't think it really makes sense, especially without a pivoting display
although I'm really susceptible to gorilla-arm syndrome, I think,
@Undo I agree. I'm just surprised they haven't capitulated to the market demand.
They've shown that they can wait out a fad, ref blu-ray. I'm a little surprised too, though
17:51
Nice piece of hardware though. My Zenbook is already jealous of the fanless cooling, battery power, and keyboard.
@Caleb Wow - what's the market demand for touch interface on portables? It's a horrible software mess to mix idioms.
I do have to laugh at how much hype is put into things that just aren't innovative at all.
Keyboard is a little tight with the edges for my taste, seems like they could have afforded another half-inch of width, and fill it full of battery
$1299
Jin
Jin
i just want a new imac...
2
That's not bad
17:52
@Caleb troll - or you have no appreciation for how to manufacture hardware
Are they killing the standard MBP?
here we go
this sounds depressing
18:11
Siri demos make me nervous
18:21
That demo was really well done
prices.
well, there we have it
18:38
@Undo I always doubted these are live, are they?
@grgarside Not sure
Wouldn't be surprised if they have some kind of contingency
@Jin what about the retina iMac that came out last year?
Jin
Jin
@KyleCronin i feel it's half way through life cycle.. i'd rather get the next vesion
19:06
Hi, Apple users. My girlfriend is looking for a new Mac, and I was reading about the new products today at lunch. Can someone explain why she would want the new MacBook over the 13 inch MacBook Air? The MBA was what she was looking at before the event. It's slightly larger, faster, larger battery life, and the same storage size. It's also only 0.93 lbs heavier and doesn't have retina (which is OK).
Just comparing them on the Apple site makes the Air 13 inch seem so much better.
A fully decked out MBA will cost $1750. That's before trading in the old MacBook (it's old, so it's going to be very little) and my discount through my employer. We're looking at taking about $150 off that price, so we'll get it for $1650. The starting price for the new MB is $1200 and has weaker specs.
I've got to run for a bit, but if someone can enlighten me on if I should consider the new MacBook, that would be great.
@ThomasOwens Even though the Core i5 has a higher clock speed, I'm not convinced it'll be 'faster'. Yes the MacBook Air does look better, but you'll be sacrificing the Retina display. As that doesn't matter, MBA all the way. (MBA is slightly heavier FWIW.)
19:56
@grgarside How do you figure it won't be faster? I don't see how 1.1GHz with Turbo Boost to 2.4 GHz can be anything up slower than a 1.6 GHz turbo up to 2.7 or a 2.2 torbu up to 3.2.
20:29
@ThomasOwens In tasks which actually use a decent percentage of CPU, yeah the MBA will be faster, but I really doubt there'll be any noticeable difference in word processing/etc.
@grgarside That makes sense.
I'm still thinking the MBA makes more sense, especially since I probably don't need the decked out MB.
Honestly, it's primarily an Internet machine. Email, web browsing, taking notes in classes.
I think the 1.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB drive 13in MBA is sufficient. I may borrow it from time to time, since I don't own a Mac product, if I wanted to dabble in iOS development.
20:50
@ThomasOwens This.
TL;DR: The new Macbook is essentially a netbook. Intel Core M, tiny board, fanless... A very sexy, expensive, metal netbook.
21:00
@grgarside Yeah. I agree with that tweet.
I'm sure it's very well designed, but the price point...really turns me off.

3 hours later…
23:38
@grgarside and you have to ruin it with a nasty ass dongle if you want to use any existing peripherals with it: store.apple.com/us/product/MJ1K2AM/A/… -- LOOK AT THAT AWFUL THING!
