That's WAY better than Guest Login!

kyle, the stated reason in apple's docs somewhere was that the ipod touch was somehow "optimized" for audio playback
in terms of battery life
and no I cannot back that up with a source

@hobs that sounds implausible, regardless of what they said I suspect the real reason was because they didn't want to confuse people that bought an iPod with an app called iPod
but why they didn't change it on the iPhone and iPad I don't know

Consistency, maybe?

shouldnt any questions about IOS5 (excluding what is said in the keynote) be off-topic ?

Q: Upgrade personal iPhone to iOS beta 5.0?

SensefulI currently have an iPhone 4 (GSM) and I'm signed up to the iOS development program, meaning I can install iOS 5.0 on it. The problem is that I use this same phone as a personal phone, I'm wondering if it's a good idea to install a beta OS on it or not. I'd really like to be able to take advantag...

Made a boo-boo and answered unconsciously

@phwd Questions about NDA'd or beta functionality are off topic, but since this isn't it's OK. You could make a case that it's subjective or prone to discussion, but I think it's acceptable. Feel free to undelete your answer if you want. (heck, we even featured the question on the last podcast!)
@phwd Usually, yes. But, IMO, this one is pretty general.
So, it's useful and will continue to be, even once iOS5 is released.
cool I think I will leave it deleted for now
Ok, up to you.

I developed a crack on the front of my iPhone 4
currently in the Apple Store to find out how much it'll cost to repair
I was quoted $100-150 (forgot how much) for my cracked 3GS
(it worked fine, just a cosmetic crack in the glass)
but I pointed out some cracking in the plastic around the docking port and the genius said "hmm, let's just get you a new phone then"
was just told that they can't replace the screen, and that it would be $199 for a replacement phone
yikes
Don't forget to leave askdifferent.com up on all the demo kiosks!

Or, $150 for DIY. In any case, not fun!

yeah
the phone still works, there's just a crack from the button extending up and left crossing the bottom left corner of the screen
I should probably get a screen protector though

I don't know if this is new, but if you go into Settings -> Store you can turn on automatic downloads for music, apps, and books
I know that was a part of iCloud, but it's working on iOS 4.3.3
so you can browse the app store on desktop iTunes, buy an app, and it's instantly downloaded to your iPhone
majorly cool
22:14
you can tell how hacky the solution is, considering how the first time it loads showing only your apple id, but then loads in the additional fields
it's amazing that it works this way
And there's my Google Music Invite...
yeah, this shows that it's more than just webviews being changed
with 4.3.3 Apple must have added the capability to receive iCloud pushes for purchases
Well. I'm actually talking about the fact that WebViews are being changed.
I (we?) knew that the content stuff was all APNS driven. That's not a surprise.
But the fact that content can just change like that is... odd to me
something that is definitely not just a browser shell, dynamically updating. Crazy
Then again, HotSpot enablement... why am I surprised.
but did we know that apps were delivered with APNS?
the app store predates the push system
I figured it was a message that told the phone to pick it up. Or that, yes, APNS pushed data onto the device.
well, I guess they made the change at some point
maybe when they released the push system
which is why they're able to retrofit the new iCloud functionality without a software update
22:29
yep
still weird that that view updated though

I think it's because of my familiarity with ActiveMQ leading me to believe I know everything about Message Brokering technologies. But it's strange just how vivid my ideas about APNS are.
And it's stranger to have the gut feeling that I'm like, 90% wrong with everything I think about it, too.
