I seem to recall a question about automatically jumping to the next input field in a form when an input box is filled on, but I can't find it now
*filled in

ah yes, found it

Q: Is autotabbing in forms helpful or harmful?

superduperflyI work in an environment that makes heavy use of mainframe systems. These systems are costly to maintain, so a decision was made years ago to replace the mainframe with web based systems. As more people move off the mainframe to the web, a common request is that we implement autotabbing (i.e. au...

Can't seem to find any research on this subject

No, I'm living in the Summer Time! Well, BST officially.

I hope we get answers to the SO migrated question. It seems interesting and I'd feel bad if a relevant migrated question was just ignored here. Guess I'll try and find some patterns that may be relevant to it.

Q: How to display indexes for UITableView in a complex list?

Joe MasilottiI have a UITableView of UITableViewStylePlain with sections titled as districts (neighborhoods) in New York City. I am struggling how to implement the indexes (quick "links" on the right). Should they be: The first letter of the district (Upper West Side -> U) The first letter of each word of t...

2:10 PM
Can someone kill the Xcodespeak out of the title at least?

I don't think there's a better suggestion than the one he's gone with really. I see no issue with having the quick-jump vertical list on the side having 3 or more letters, it's a helpful addition and usability trumps 'looking weird' in my opinion.

I hate telecoms

Ah, that IS helpful of them.
For your convenience we're disabling some features for you.

They're not disabling, they're requiring you to buy in to voice services, aren't they?

@BenBrocka Yup. At least, I'm getting grandfathered

2:16 PM
Well they're removing something you used to get for free.

Also, I like how the meat of the statement is in fine print, and the meaningless doubletalk is in regular font

I like the "If you're not already paying for this then you don't need to do anything" comment. That's nice of them.

About 10 years ago my parents' cable provider sent them a notification saying along the lines of improving service they were reshuffling channel selection by including a religious channel instead of a sports channel

Verizion cares about You. (Your organs will be harvested if your bill is not paid by March 15th)

@BenBrocka That's precisely why I posted this

2:17 PM
Verizon is dedicated to quality service (by reading this you are agreeing that we can revoke service at any time)

Wait, on re-reading it it says they're not offering internet without voice, but if you're currently already recieving it then you'll still get it, yes?
So they're only screwing future customers.

@JonW When I read the first lines, I almost went ballistic - I don't want to pay another $15-20/mo. for a service I don't use at all - my mobile phone is more than enough

They must be finally realizing that land lines are dying
gotta love monopolies

@JonW Not future. The part that I didn't capture is fun: "if you move to a different place after May 6, you'll have to have local phone service"

You WILL pay for their dinosaur buggywhip services
And you will LIKE it

2:22 PM
Yup

Mediacom keeps humping my leg for cable/landline service too, but they haven't required it yet...

Q: What voice should an option you don't want users to change be written in?

TimThePMWe have a form with a bunch of options that impact how our service will work for a given account. Most of them are positively-voiced questions ("Allow this to happen?"). There is one option that prevents users in the account from being able to change their own settings. We want to discourage t...

This sounds better as "which tone", right? Or is there something better?
"What voice" made me think he was asking about passive voice

That's a good question, but makes me think there is a dupe somewhere. Something about always speaking in a positive tone because people understand that better than when told what not to do.
