Q: What is the network policy regarding AI Generated content?

PhilippeEarlier this week, Stack Exchange released guidance to moderators on how to moderate AI Generated content. What does this guidance include?

Our treatment of AI generated content is currently in turmoil as Stack Exchange pursues its own unilateral agenda. Details on MetaSE. Regardless of the considerable confusion and community anger that has been generated by the actions of SE, the message for AU editors remains clear: if a post on AU is of low quality it should be removed and if a user posts a flood of low quality material this merits removal of these posts as well as suspension. In the interim this will be our way forward.

@andrew.46 If AU is following that policy, does our AI-content-ban need updating? Or at least, it probably should be re-featured (the Community bot automatically un-featured it a few days ago)

@cocomac So perhaps leave it in place for the moment, nothing is firm yet...

6:08 AM
@andrew.46 So practically, this doesn't really change anything, right? Because "true" AI posts are most often low quality..

@ArturMeinild It is hoped in this interim period that the type of low quality posts we have been seeing that were generated by an AI utility will still be removed. In the short term at least they will not be labelled as 'AI generated material' but 'low quality posts'. However this is still early days yet...

I’ve given more complete thoughts elsewhere, but I think that post should be re featured. Even with the new policy, mods can still suspend users for excessive low quality posts, and we can still cite that as a possible reason for a post being low quality.

@andrew.46 The issue with "Low quality" is that the quality of a post is many times judged by subjective terms and can lead to more flagging for the wrong reasons and, consequently, to more declined flags.

OT Kali

SE should have established more specific rules for AI-generated content, rather than essentially saying that "Okay, we might have left communities on their own to do something for the AI matter, without any guidance from us, and some mistakes have happened, so we step in and leave communities on their own and also blame them for the mistakes."

10:37 AM
I mean, they do this again and again. A little respect would go a long way

I agree with the policy, actually, but they have to deliver it like a slap in the face with a well fermented fish???????
meanwhile, why the hell have the voting buttons become so ugly? Who thought this would be an improvement? what are they smoking out there???
@BeastOfCaerbannog I've not been very active lately, but it seems mods were encouraged to suspend people for posting AI-generated content, and also that some mods had requested clearer messaging for new users that it was not allowed (we get replies saying "oh sorry, didn't realise it was banned."). Hmph.

11:20 AM
@Zanna Yeah, I could agree with it as well, but not with the way they do it now. They left the communities alone when the ChatGPT thing started and the communities had to figure a way of action by themselves. The total ban of AI posts was not the best action, and the communities knew that, so the AI bans in most sites were a temporary measure to assess the situation.
Of course it was expected that some mistakes would happen, and the people, in this room at least, tried to justify their actions regarding flagging AI posts (both based on the post formatting, content, and use of AI detection tools), but some false positives would be inevitable. Sure, such false positives could drive some users away, but a flood of AI garbage posts would drive users away too!
So I find it rather hypocritical for SE coming now and saying that what the communities did to alleviate the issue was wrong. They say that based on the "potential for false-positives is very high", for which they present no evidence, but what does this even mean? Does it mean that there actually were many false positives or that there could be many false positives?
Once again they offer no actual guiding, and blame all of us for their non-existence in actual matters. But, hey, they increased the ads, fixed the voting buttons (🤢), and fired people.
Sorry for ranting, I'm actually pissed off right now!

ranting is fine!

@Zanna SE: Blame the mods.
@Zanna Whatever it is I want some too! Where do we buy it from?

the people (not just mods) who care the most about these sites have been working hard and doing their best

I'm just taking a wild guess here: insert commercial corporate voice "The new voting buttons are part of updating the site visuals to a more modern user experience." 😅

@Zanna Certainly! This is not only not appreciated, but you also get SE's finger pointing at you! They could say "sorry for being absent, you did your best, we believe that the best course of action from now on is this, and we should follow these rules".

11:31 AM
at a minimum
at least the mod teams post was slightly apologetic about leaving us in a soup hahaha

Actually, I couldn't care less about how the buttons look - I think the AI policy matter is way more important, and without knowing much about the inner workings of SE, I believe I agree with you both. 😁

@Zanna Hahaha, they need you more

whereas this post here seems tossed off without a care
oh well

I mean they need mods, not you personally

this is what we always get
@BeastOfCaerbannog haha yeah... they do

@ArturMeinild hah... they must have announced it somewhere? haven't bothered to read it...

@Zanna And it's not the first time that Philippe tosses a disrespectful post. The one informing us about firing people was shit.

yeah. what a downer.

Philippe seems pettier than what we expected at first.

the latest fall guy :/

11:41 AM
@Zanna Huh? Is this some idiomatic expression?

it means someone who gets set up to take the blame, a scapegoat

@Zanna Hmmm... I'm not sure if he's really just a scapegoat judging from his unapologetic posts

yeah, he is a disappointment
but I feel sorry for him

yeah

11:46 AM
@Zanna Yeah, I understand what you mean

the post is weird
it is being handled weirdly
