^^ I'm not sure what should be done with that. It seems intended as a thanks posts but it also seems to be saying that running just that one command was sufficient, which could itself be an answer. The preexisting answer that gives that command also gives two others and is written in such a way as to make it seem like one should run all three.
(Btw, Natty reported that in SEBotics but not here.)
underrated answer - it's the only answer there that talks about repository components

@EliahKagan running all three seems like it would not be a good idea...

@EliahKagan That was also my reaction when I read it.

@Zanna Yeah, I'm not sure what the author of that older answer intended.

I don't think it's worth undeleting, but maybe there's something we could do about the answer it was thanking, at least a comment?
Migrateable? Looks ok to me
sigh I wonder what to do about this

The comment? Or are the NAA flags?

@EliahKagan There's a flag for moderator attention
Otherwise, I would do nothing
Can't even leave that flag for reviewers

The comment is wrong regardless of what our policy is, and I've replied to it.

Thanks :)

As for the custom mod flag, I don't know.
@Zanna There's stuff on meta that could be read as supporting deletion and as supporting custom mod flags on such posts, so probably the flag should be marked helpful, but that doesn't address the question of whether or not a mod who handles the flag should perform some other action such as deleting the post.

That's alright. I appreciate your comment replying to the comment

2:04 AM
If it is deleted by a moderator, there is then the question of how a subsequent flag requesting that it be undeleted should be handled.

@EliahKagan yes... I'm just worried about it happening over and over again

Ask Ubuntu Meta? (For the general issue, I mean.)

Yes, but, I don't know what to write there
Thanks for your input :)

@Natty fp - looks like trolling though and, if not, it's dangerous. I custom-flagged it for a mod.

We have a number of questions related to installing Chromium without using snaps. Can any of them be considered duplicates of the others?

dupe not unclear
@Zanna That was me! I've hanged my vote.

:)
The OP of this question is saying that if this post is a bug report (which it is not, they say), then isn't the suggested duplicate also a bug report?
why do we have such a silly policy? <-- I'm saying that, not them

12:47 PM
@Zanna Yes. Neither is a bug report. :)
@Natty tp

1:08 PM
@EliahKagan agreed
isn't it an extremely greedy interpretation of our close reason to argue that a question is off topic because someone thinks it ought to be a bug report?

Yes. But I'm not sure anyone was pushing that interpretation. The people who closed it probably thought the intended behavior is clear, that the bug would be agreed upon by everyone, and that the OP was not asking what it was.

it is at least reasonable to consider this behaviour of update-notifier a bug I guess

1:28 PM
I remember back when one of the default Unity lenses sent local search queries to Amazon, which many--perhaps most--users did not want. I would consider that a bug. There was a Launchpad bug report for it and everything. Still, we didn't respond to people asking to turn that off with closure. (I believe this was the main question about that.)
Obviously they were asking how to change their system to get behavior other than what was designed. It would've been grotesque if we had just told people to go to Launchpad. The moral stakes in this recent case are probably much lower, but the same principle seems to apply. In defense of those who closed the question, though, they were likely not aware of the dupe target and thus that its a long-standing issue.

@Natty tp

2:05 PM
yeah, I agree.
There is a difference between a bug report and a person asking about a solution to some problem they are facing.

2:27 PM
@jokerdino The difference is sometimes hard to figure out in specific practical cases, though.

Closed as duplicate but I think it's not: askubuntu.com/questions/1257322/…

@EliahKagan of course

@Ravexina Why not?
I think that, if we interpret that question in a way that makes it on-topic for Ask Ubuntu, then it's a duplicate of the question we closed it as a duplicate of.

@EliahKagan I should have reopened it yesterday. Thanks for doing it, you and @jokerdino

@Zanna, @EliahKagan and @jokerdino, as far as I'm concerned, as one of the people who voted to close this question as OT, it wasn't clear what the OP was asking for, i.e. if they were looking for a solution to their problem or an explanation of why it was happening. The setting of the update notifier is seemingly not respected, so, in my opinion, this does count as a bug.
So the explanation to their problem that it is a bug is justified, thus my vote. Regarding the duplicate, the question is clear about stopping the update notifier from checking for updates, so the answer of uninstalling update notifier is a perfectly good answer for it, but I would not consider it as good for the question we are talking about.
I hope that makes sense.

2:40 PM
@EliahKagan That's true. I think OP is asking "How to get people's attention?" which is OT.

@user3140225 Yes. I think a bug is involved (or maybe multiple bugs?), but I'm not sure there's agreement about what the effect should be of what the OP did. The OP seemed also to want to know what the intended effect was. Judging from the earlier question that I think we can dupe it to, being unable to prevent updates from being installed automatically seems to be a long-standing problem (though fortunately not one that affects everyone).
@Ravexina It might have been on the borderline of what we ought to consider worth interpreting/improving to be on-topic. But it immediately generated interest by people who posted answers, at least two of which are valuable (though there seems to be a bug, or confusing design, on the Snapcraft page linked to in the snaps answer). So I think it's reasonable to keep it as a duplicate, rather than to reopen and reclose it as off-topic or unclear.

@EliahKagan Fair enough :)

3:01 PM
@EliahKagan I agree with you, but, although the duplicate describes the same problem and provides answers for it, it does not answer the questions of what is happening.

@user3140225 Yeah, that's true. That's a good point.

@EliahKagan Since it has been a pretty long discussion about that question which isn't exactly a bug nor a duplicate, maybe it's worth just leaving it open after all.
