I think we should consider this question to be a duplicate (see comments). I also hope it ends up with positive score (now that I've added the missing information) because I really want people with the same misconception to find it--and thus at least one of those linked quesitons showing how to do it right or less wrong--by searching, which won't happen if it gets roomba'd, which apparently happens to dupes too.

there, now it has a positive score

I think this answer has been underappreciated, especially compared to the currently highest-scoring answer.
The last sentence of this question indicates that general information is sufficient so long as it's detailed enough. What's the best question to dupe that to?

maybe this one?

Seems reasonable.

I mean this includes all the different ways to set an environment variable like $PATH and even others
and in many cases even explanation why and what

Woah I think the opposite of this comment for most file editing situations...

@Zanna I've commented.

@SmokeDetector I downvoted and voted to delete and flagged as NAA but it's not abusive imho
@EliahKagan thank you, that's a great comment :)
Back later

I haven't seen this error message in a Stack Exchange "tooltip" before:

@EliahKagan i think the site has problems right now, it takes ages for me to load pages

hope this edit is ok, i considered before putting an own answer but since i not came up with that and its merely a slight reword of the websites version i think an edit to the main answer is ok. thoughts?

Seems like a great edit to me - thank you for doing that!
@Videonauth I don't know anything about this topic :(

@Zanna yep i wanted to make sure if the link goes dead again it is still here as information
@Zanna gnome3 has normaly by default the desktop icons disabled, you simply need to reenable them vie tweak tool
but i guess thats a simple drop and run question, since i got no feedback whatsoever on my answer
