I think we can actually reopen this question (see my comment).

@Zanna It's an "msdos" partition table with 4 primary partitions. They can't make a 5th partition even if they shrink the ones they currently have. The typical solution is to use an extended partition, which is a container that lets other "logical partitions" go inside it, but they don't have one, so at least one of their existing partitions will have to be removed, though I think there are tools that can convert a primary partition into a logical partition in an extended partition container.

We must have a question that this can be duped to. I have just removed my old unclear close vote, which (I hope!!) was from before they added the output I requested, so that it can be shown as a duplicate when it's closed. This will prevent me from voting to close it as a duplicate myself, though.
In hindsight, I think that when the + doesn't work in the Ubiquity partitioner, it pretty much alway means it's a disk with an msdos disklabel and 4 primary partitions.
@Zanna The question we we're now discussing is related to, but not a duplicate of, this question whose own dupe status we had discussed a while ago:

A: Why don't I have the option ''Install Ubuntu alongside'' my other systems?

BraiamThere are several possibles causes: Your system already have 4 primary partitions: The solution is removing one. Windows wasn't shutdown correctly. You must make sure Windows shutdown, no hibernation, no suspend, but a clean shutdown. Your NTFS partition is dirty. You must check all your NT...

@EliahKagan I also retracted the unclear C"
@EliahKagan I also retracted the unclear CV I added before they supplied useful info
Sorry, I'm typing on an especially awkward device
Hmmm there must be a target, but I don't have time to look now...

Let me see if I can find it.
@Zanna Then it is your device, and not you, who should apologize. :)
Just kidding; I understand "sorry" does not always express remorse.
Is this really a duplicate of that?
I think this question is a duplicate, though perhaps its answers should be merged after it is closed. Or maybe we should dupe the other way, in spite of the votes, in that the one I'm saying to close is perhaps more general.

10:13 AM
@EliahKagan lol :) thanks
@EliahKagan the canonical one has more details, but do they restrict the answers? The other one is about a triple boot situation, which might make readers think it's different from their issue if they aren't dealing with the same... But I guess that's not much different from the dual boot scenario in the more upvoted post - triple just seems exotic

@Zanna I found some stuff for that question and posted a comment, though I'm unsure if either of the two questions I mention at the end of this comment are the best one to dupe it to:
You have an "msdos" partition table with 4 primary partitions so you can't make a 5th even if there's room. The typical solution is an extended partition (a container other "logical partitions" go inside) but you'd have to remove a partition to make one. Where can I install ubuntu if I have 4 primary partitions? (especially this answer) and My disk already has 4 primary partitions, how can I install Ubuntu? should help. — Eliah Kagan 1 min ago

Since I can't vote either anyway, I just upvoted your comment for now :S Thanks a lot! I think it will help OP a lot

I still think we might have another question that explicitly talks about not being able to make partitions while manually partitioning. I remember people talking about not being able to click + before and it relating to this; I don't think it was just in that one question.
Is this question a duplicate of something? It comes down to installing SMPlayer from a particular PPA, and I don't think we should dupe it to a generic SMPlayer install/upgrade question, but do we have something that mentions features like what the OP was talking about wanting to use?
(Also the comment on the self-answer is just noise now, since the OP hasn't visited the site for almost two years.)

I don't know why I didn't flag that comment earlier... don't remember seeing anything similar, but something to do with YouTube could be a good lead

Is there a reason this question might be considered primarily opinion-based, or do people just not know what plausible deniability actually is?
@jokerdino Hi. If this question ends up being closed as a duplicate of that one, do you think it would be reasonable to merge the answers in? (I'm not asking for a mod close vote, just wondering if you think this is a situation where merging might make sense.)

1:05 PM
I guess it's reasonably possible.
But generally, I try to avoid merging answers because they are mostly tweaked to answer specific questions..

1:25 PM
Do you think it would be better to dupe them in the other direction, then, so the answer about converting the partition type or the whole partition table is more likely to be seen? Or should I retract my close vote?
I think this post is not an answer, but it's by the OP and it seems to touch on a fundamental confusion. Should it be made into a comment?

@EliahKagan Rod has another answer in the master question too
It's alright to close the question in the current way.

That answer of his has specific solutions, though. In any case I agree -- I feel good about my vote. The other question and its answers will continue to exist, after all.

@EliahKagan I think OP is adding some of their inputs to the accepted answer.
OP is saying it's not possible to save a file without any content.
But yeah, it should be possible to save a file without anything in it if you use "Save as"
Now that I read it again, I'm confused.

I am too. I think I covered the major possibilities in my comment, but I still don't know why they are talking about that.

Probably talking about both empty files and nameless files.
We could delete the answer and be comfortable because the accepted answer is sufficient IMO.

1:50 PM
I see it's deleted now. I'm not sure if it should be made into a comment. (I think you can still do that, but I'm not sure if this is a situation where that's considered appropriate.) If you do decide to make it into a comment, I won't be bothered if you decide to remove (or keep) my comment reply, as you see fit.
Although the answer to this question is a reasonable workaround (so long as gksu is installed), I seem to recall we have a question a Polkit problems keeping the Software Center working with an error message like that...
I commented on this answer saying to edit the question instead... but I wonder if it's intended as a reply to a different comment or something. I don't think it's an attempt to self-answer.
Whoa, 11 chat blue flags just came and went, before I could see what they were! Something must've happened in some chat room somewhere...

Root Access I think

I also saw a blue zero just now.... that's odd.

Yep, that room.

2:34 PM
Root Access sounds like dentistry *shudder*

This question is being strangely voted off-topic. I don't think it needs to be closed at all, but can it be edited to make it clearer (or narrower)?
This has nothing to do with the off-topic close votes, just with improving the post... except that if someone does vote to close it for another reason, the system will wrongly show them as having endorsed the off-topic closure, thus further normalizing the tendency to close questions that don't feel Ubuntuy enough without checking actual policies or commenting.

I think this question can be closed as a duplicate of the general offline updating question.

should be a dupe target for this question I think? Should it be specific to torrent files?

8:29 PM
@Zanna Is that just asking how to open magnet links when they're clicked in a browser?

I'm not sure...

I'm rather tired right now. Coffee has failed to take effect...
:)
That should possibly be a frown face. Too tired to tell. Not really sleepy though...
I wanted to write a couple answers but the incomplete sentences and trailing ellipses suggest that will not happen just now. :)

hmm I am getting to that point myself, but here it's legitimately bedtime. Hope you feel better soon

8:45 PM
Thanks! I should be fine.
@Zanna OK, so, if they're downloading a metafile (.torrent) and they're not selecting a location then it should go to their download folder which by default is ~/Downloads. This is separate from a magnet link which isn't a file.
So shall we undelete this answer?

isn't this question unclear?
@EliahKagan maybe... I read the question that way - they just can't find the file they downloaded!
but maybe worth just adding an answer, since that answer lacks detaile

@EliahKagan I've undelete-voted that. It's basically the answer I would've posted, plus the advice given in the comment to the answerer is officially wrong, both network-wide and here.

I mean, we could edit it, but it would be easier to write a new answer... deleted user, need to get another undelete vote, etc etc

I'm willing to post an answer, but I'm editing it now, and I think the benefit of undeleting it is that 10k users will be less likely to see it and keep telling people to do wrong things.

OK, voted :)

8:59 PM
Edited.

thanks :)

9:15 PM
Just 20k users can cast undelete votes on (other users') answers, right?
Sorry, obviously that is the case. The system always confers delete/undelete and close/reopen votes together.
@karel Would you be willing to help out in undeleting that answer? I've edited it into better shape.
So people often wonder why it's important to run as a non-root user, given that the greatest damage on a "single user" system is data loss in one's home directory anyway. Do we have a question about that specifically?

9:37 PM
Not that I know of...
@EliahKagan it's fine; I like questions I know the answer to XD (SE conditioning?)
Hmm sleeping
