Q: Was there a retro computer susceptible of being damaged only by issuing instructions at it?

mcleod_ideafixThis question... Can a USR command damage a ZX Spectrum? ... has leaded me to wonder if there was once a microcomputer that could actually be damaged by software. More specifically: Is there a case that a microcomputer, using its default shipped hardware configuration (i.e. no added interfaces ...

Q: Why did the ZX Spectrum use edges for its tape storage routines?

jbcreixWhy did the Sinclair ZX-Spectrum use edges for its standard tape storage routines? I can see that frequency modulation was likely necessary in order to account for the inaccurate timings when running off the lower 16Kbs in the lower-end models. However, as I understand it, EAR/MIC I/O was level...

Q: Empowering Community Reviewers

Dave TweedI feel that this question was closed too hastily by a moderator as being too broad. I realize that this site is in beta and the moderators want to keep a fairly tight rein on how the site develops. But part of that development involves the growth of an active group of community reviewers, and yo...

Q: What is the Famicom "Pulse Line" of games? How many games are part of this line?

JAL(This question was inspired by Did all NES "Black Box" games come in carts with five screws?) I've heard of the Famicom "Pulse Line" of games. What is so special about these games? Is there a North American equivalent of this line? How may "Pulse Line" games were released?

Let me know if anyone has any comments on my self answer Q&A (the Famicom question above)
Seems OK to me - not that I know anything about the NES.
@JAL There are quite a lot of different questions. The question seems like it's just there to fit the answer. I haven't read the answer yet though.
The answer looks good.
It is multiple questions in a question but they are tightly related. It could be called a list question but the list is small and finite. I wouldn't object to it.
@Chenmunka I wouldn't close that question, but... I wouldn't upvote it.
I wouldn't downvote it either, mind, but I haven't downvoted anything on this site yet.
I haven't come across anything that's rubbish and not spam.

@wizzwizz4 It's meant to be a general canonical-style self Q&A pair. Generally in those the question is open-ended
If you have any suggestions on how I could improve the question feel free to share (or just go in and edit it)

@JAL I know. I've posted a few myself! :-)

JAL
ah yes of course
@JAL It's... hard to explain.

totally
Often, I try to post as if I don't know the answer.
That way, the question looks like a question.
JAL
JAL
That's what I was trying to do, but I agree it's still a little general.

Sometimes, I write the question before I know the answer, but often I already know both.
@JAL With that specific example, there isn't really anything else I can see to put in the question.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback
Any time.
@Chenmunka Have you remembered?

@wizzwizz4 @Chenmunka is it possible to add a synonym that doesn't exist for a tag that does exist? I'm thinking and should be synonyms, but it doesn't look like anyone has used yet.
@JAL It's possible.
Ask on Meta, then we'll talk. :-)
JAL
JAL
ha, alright
more meta votes for me!
@JAL You can propose it here.
I used to be able to propose, but now it auto-hammers... :-(

hmm, I want community input. I wonder if we want to keep the tags separate

Q: Should Famicom and NES be synonyms?

JALI noticed that we have a nes tag but do not have a famicom tag. I recently asked a Famicom question (What is the Famicom "Pulse Line" of games? How many games are part of this line?) and used the nes tag instead of creating a new famicom tag. Should we create a famicom tag for questions that a...

afk for a bit for a meeting
@wizzwizz4 Oh I see what you're doing, nice!
I didn't realize you were posting two separate meta answers

@JAL I do that sometimes. Sometimes I don't, though.

@wizzwizz4 Both are excellent answers, thank you!
@JAL I wrote them quite quickly; I'm surprised they came out so well.

Q: Why did POKEing ROM addresses mask port writes?

wizzwizz4After reading mcleod_ideafix's answer about the ZX Spectrum's "randomize of death", specifically his article on the subject, one thing struck me as odd. From César Hernández Bañó's research: ...It happened that, if you poke'd certain ROM addresses (yes, ROM addresses), the border didn't respo...
