well we have 152 users now, on this site
Hmm... skimming through the transcript, it seems as if some of us are worried about trolls on Reddit?
I wouldn't be as much worried about the trolls as the influx of new users who are actually willing to help but maybe generate low-quality content.
yeah
00:53
@muntoo Recently? You surprise me. The little I know of /r/atheism suggests they hate pretty much everyone, pretty much always.
@TRiG I meant that the hate seems to be getting more attention than usual.
@muntoo I'm an atheist, and I hang around in the atheist bloggosphere (mainly FreeThoughtBlogs), but I never go anywhere near Reddit these days.
Whoa, SE team rules. XKCD linking posts an image with alt-text.
@muntoo It's pretty good, alright.

A: What links and sites are handled specially in chat?

Juha SyrjäläThe current list of integrated (we call this onebox, or oneboxing, ala search engines) sites is: Stack Exchange sites: Questions / Answers / Users / Comments Stack Exchange Chat: Messages / Rooms / Bookmarked conversations Area 51 proposals Posts from the Stack Exchange blog, the Server Fault b...

@Ershad Borderline trolls can be interesting.
I'm pretty sure this guy is a troll, but some of the questions he asked had very interesting answers.

Q: Why doesn't my reputation increase even though I get upvoted? Bug?

ErshadI've been noticing that though Votes in summary of my profile increases, the reputation doesn't increase and also it doesn't show up in profile. It used to before like +10 or +20 etc. I tried to google the problem and found there is a application to recalculate the reputation. It didn't work and ...

@Ansari There's some very good reasons why you shouldn't get into an elevator alone with a woman
props @TRiG for going through chat logs

2 hours later…
03:37
Assalaamu 'alaykum
04:14
wa'alaikum ussalam warahmatullah
me and kaveh both nominated ashes999 at the same time :p
and filled out my (rather wordy) introduction.
haha yes i noticed
@ashes999 is so awesome he merits two nominations
mashaAllah :)
that's why i smooshed them together into one.
yeah
little taken aback by the aggressive downvoting though
wonder what's up
on the nominations?
04:20
yes
could just be people taking Robert's comments to heart.
which essentially says "Please downvote."
yeah but still
i haven't downvoted anyone yet.
refhat, i don't know well enough to make a decision either way.
me neither
he's enthusiastic, seems to want the job
al ummat does have experience at islam.com, which is a definite plus, but he's still getting used to the stackexchange way of doing things.
04:22
in general that's good enough for me :P
i can understand the downvotes, but i'm not one of them either.
except i haven't really seen his participation so holding back on voting
hmm
don't know anything about this "ansari" guy. apparently he can't be bothered to write an introduction.
(:P)
we really need to get visitors and increase questions
ahaha
my record speaks for itself? looks at goldPseudo hopefully
dynamic is probably a good person for the job. i don't know him as well as i know some of the others though so i'm withholding my vote.
04:25
yeah i voted him
a number of people seem to disagree though
again, not sure what's going on
haven't upvoted myself. that just seems unfair.
right
(i did upvote the comment that i should update my about box tho :p)
heh
just saw your intro
You're both my top two choices, BTW.
Dynamic seems good for #3...
04:44
thanks @muntoo
@Ansari :)
@goldPseudo - added a short intro :)
hopefully we won't get any "Hey this isn't fair unless we have <sect> moderators too!" whining.
God willing.
i seriously think we need to get that "sunni vs shia" thing stamped out and into the FAQ as ASAP as possible.
yeah
i wouldn't mind having a shi'a mod
kaveh might make a good one
(assuming he's shi'a?)
i honestly don't know. i prefer not to think of people as 'shia' or 'sunni' or 'whatever' if i can help it.
04:58
If so, yeah, he's cool.
scratch that - i have no idea why i thought he was shi'a
ok nominated him anyway
05:28
i find it interesting that only 2/8 of the nominations so far are self-nominated.

Q: Should question regarding explaination of an Ayah (tafsir) be asked?

Mohammad YaseenThough i think that this is not well suited for the Q&A style of the site because of the diversity in nature of this topic. But on the other hand it'll benefit the users and visitors. Of course we can restrict the OP to be specific about what "exactly" is the point they want to be explained. ...

06:07
i hate coming up with good questions when i'm too tired to string two sentences together :(
Assalamu
alaikkum
peeps
wa 'alaykum assalaam
Walaykum assallam
can someone give possible explanation of this question?
1
Q: Why should a person who disbelieves after becoming Muslim be executed?

EfazatiWhy after accepting Islam (with child born or something else) Muslims cant change their religion? But I think women also in this stauts change? Why execute disbelievers? and why not execute women?

walaikumusalam
06:11
i can't quite parse what the parenthetical is supposed to mean.
Lol he probably meant "born into muslim family"
ah. i must be tired to have missed that.
yeah, let us assume that .. but whats with the reference to women?
the question seems to be under the assumption that women are not (necessarily) executed for apostacy.
wow.
06:13
which is not something i've known.
just like some non-muslims thing married men are not stoned for adultery under sharia
*think
because movies portray only women
ah. hanafi position, apparently.
(at least according to a quick google search and some non-muslim sources with clear bias)
"Hanafi scholars maintain that a female apostate should not be killed because it was forbidden to kill women by the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and because women are unlikely to take up arms and endanger the community." (a la Wikipedia)
so...the question now makes sense. seriously needs some editing for grammar though.
@goldPseudo lol. yeah.. I think it is only Imam Abu Hanifa's position...
because of Allah saying "Do not kill women and children"
so there is ikhtilaf
i rewrote the question to better good the englishing; forgot i didn't have full edit abilities anymore so it's in peer review queue.
approved it :)
06:33
good morning guys
oops
well not all might be experiencing a morning
@Ashu Its afternoon here. :)
well someone rejected my edit on this answer
2
A: What does 786 mean?

KavehIt is "بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم" written using Abjad numerals. Each letter in Arabic is assigned a numeral value. In this case we the following a letter-by-letter cumulative value: 2 + 60 + 40 + 1 + 30 + 30 + 5 + 1 + 30 + 200 + 8 + 40 + 50 + 1 + 30 + 200 + 8 + 10 + 40 = 786 You can think of...

@PowerInside hehe
rejecting a valid edit is cruel
i'm experiencing a morning, but from the wrong end. i should've been asleep hours ago :p
@Ashu where can I find pending/rejected edits? I don't see anything here islam.stackexchange.com/posts/800/revisions
@PowerInside well you dont seem to have enouh rep to do that
neither do i
you need 750 i think
06:39
ok
1000 Edit other people’s posts, vote to approve or reject suggested edits
@goldPseudo oops yeah
srry
750 was for approving tag wiki edits, but that's up to 1500 now.
ugh. that question brings up a meta post which i'm too tired to write.
dont be lazy, future mod
06:42
God knows the future.
Nah, He probably deserves a rest.. drafting posts are more of a headache than moderator tools
@PowerInside you are right too
@goldPseudo Take a deep sleep bro, no trolls here for now
@goldPseudo well whats your question
the question would basically be keyed to the fact that the questioner is obviously looking for an answer from a specific school of thought. but very possibly doesn't even know his own school, just that he was told such-and-such.
so it adds an extra complication to the general "should answers from any school be allowed" discussions which have been going on.
06:45
thats a good question.
(not the way i just worded it, it isn't. i'd downvote myself, if i could :p)
i sleep now.
@goldPseudo that sounds like me.. :P
@goldPseudo good night
assalaamu 'alaykum all.
wa'alaykum assalaam
i lost my partial mod powers :(
06:52
@goldPseudo Is Dynamic really 13 yr old like his profile suggests?
@goldPseudo sorry ..assalamu alaikkum :D
@Ershad well he left. He is sleeping like a baby :P @goldPseudo
@Ashu lol..i just realized.. that's why sorry :D
If I am not wrong both @Ashu and @PowerInside are from india right?
@Ershad Yes, my profile never lies.
@PowerInside :P where from india?
Kerala @Ershad
And you?
06:58
Mannarghat @PowerInside But, I don't live there now, but that's where I am originally from.
My brother is going to work at Kochi, got a new job there.. so I am going to see kerala more often than before..yayy
well im from mumbai
Wow nice.. im at calicut now.. so there are 3 active keralites since private beta on islam.SE now.. that's really good to know.
@Ershad So where are you now?
whose the third?
@Ashu tacheons
@Ashu that is nice. I've been to mumbai too :) just once.. it's like a totally different place to me.. @PowerInside My family moved to chennai long back
07:04
So we're all in the same timezone anyway..
true.
I wouldn't be surprised to find lot of indians :) that's the case in every forum/QA site
(Bringing this up again.) I still think we should submit my post to /r/islam as soon as we can to turn all the energy to constructive purposes.
Tomorrow is 'Bash Atheist Day', and a few posts on /r/islam say we shouldn't partake in that.
Therefore, I think with the title of "Instead of bashing atheists, let's be constructive" or similar, we can get lots more helpful users.
Posting this link a week later might not be as effective as doing it now. The tide seems to be turning over at /r/atheism as well.
@muntoo In my opinion no.. we shouldn't.. That is not how we muslims deal with things.. we speak a good word or be silent
yes, lets be constructive
@Ershad What I meant was, we could get more users from /r/islam while they're still full of energy. (Instead of bashing atheists.)
@muntoo agree :)
07:10
...Any objections? @PowerInside @Ashu @Ansari ?
I'm not quite sure..
Let's give it a little more time, we are not in need of steep progress right now.. there's plenty of time
il agree only if you dont do anything that wil anger them
http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/5128426#5128426
Doesn't seem angry, right? :)
@muntoo Its perfect and cool.
thats great
srry i dint see that before
07:16
what's with all 12 and 786 questions?
I'm sorry, it might sound biased, but it would sound like Islam follows some numerology or something
the 12 one gave me the idea for 786 one.. well anyways i was sincerely curious
@Ershad no
if you see the answer on my question you should figure out its not numerology
just a way of expressing word in numbers
(and yeah the tags on my question are wrong)
@Ashu It's not numerology.. But again it has no basis in religion right? It's probably something something like how people shorten or paraphrase things..
@Ershad yeah sort of but still it is somewhat related to islam
lol.. yeah. "somewhat" :D
a new dicussion, anyone interested?

A: What does 786 mean?

Tabrez AhmedAs others have said, 786 is a hash of "Bismillah-hirRahmaan-irraheem". Instead of beginning a work with "Bismillah-hirRahmaan-irraheem", any work, writeups, etc. would now begin with 786. I wonder how hashing came to Qur'anic verses. where does the proof of using a hash arise? Though mathematica...

07:25
I like math and all, but hashing stuff like that and substituting it for the real phrases sounds messed up.
@muntoo we never see it in actual phrases
I like math a lot..but not in Islam please
just in paintings or places where writing the whole word is not possible
like during an exam i would like to write 786 rather than bism illāh ir-raḥmān ir-raḥīm on the top of my paper
@Ashu writing 786 will not fetch you the same reward as writing basmalah ..in fact writing 786 will fetch you not reward at all
*no
if I tell you xyz means allahu akbar, would you say that instead of takbir during the prayers?
07:32
exactly
@Ershad well IMO intensions is that matters. You say god or khuda or bhagwan , if you are referring to Allah then nothing else matters
@PowerInside no
@Ashu If intention is all that matters, you don't even need to write 786 on the paper in the first place.
i said it is just for smaller references like the eg i gave
@PowerInside well it reminds me that there is a force above to help me in need.. there is nothing wrong in that
@Ashu You perform deeds to get reward from Allah and to get full benefit of the reward you should do it properly. You know if intention is all that matters, why do we have texts explaining how we should do things? Everything is Intention + right action and words. Imaan is belief + action + statements right? That is what the prophet defined Imaan as.
2
I am not saying it is wrong. Just saying if you do it properly, you get full benefit of it, Insha Allah
@Ashu No problem with that, but don't make things too cryptic. Bismillah is supposed to be the full in its arabic and making '786' or "basmalla" more mainstream is not a good thing because it discourages the authentic arabic usage. I heard some where that Allah loves arabic more.. not sure if there's a hadith.
g2g.. everyone
assalamualikum
07:41
@PowerInside Me too , walaikkum assalam

It was rejected automatically by Community, since your edit was pending and the answerer edited it and it doesn't need to be approved or something.
10:25
Asalamu wa alaikum
10:49
@Gigili ok thanks but how can it do that ... my edit was a valid one anyways
11:02
@Ashu You suggested an edit which put your edit in the queue to get approved or rejected.
Someone else edited the post while he/she was unaware of your edit and your edit was still int he queue.
Since the question was edited, the Community user rejected your pending suggestion, as it pertains to an older version.
This is what has happened when you see community rejected your edit.
It's not a real person, after all.
I need to go to bed now, good night!
@Gigili well i get all that but the main reason i am protesting is that if one edit is rejected i have to start all over from 0 edits to reach the "strunk & white badge"
11:18
@Ashu I suggest you post this into meta and tag it with
(My bed is calling me!)
@Ashu It's just how the system works.
And it happens rarely.
Most of the time one of the users get notified that someone else is editing the post or it's edited already so that the other user doesn't waste time on it.
@Ashu Only one edit will keep you away from that shiny badge? Be my guest, edit 79 posts and I'll give you the badge! ;)
@Gigili im sorry to keep yuo awake we will discuss it later
@Ashu No problem at all, I had to reply to an email before going to bed.
11:33
@Ashu, you called me to chat, we were discussing about 786...

Asalamu wa alaikum
@AlUmmat Wa alaikum assalam
I have a question
@AlUmmat Yes?
is Islam.SE going to get a google+ page?
Wa Alaikumussalaam
11:58
@AlUmmat If we do, it'll be after we get our mods.
This is the first time I've seen nine nominations. The most I've seen before was like 5...
Assalamu alaikkum, brothers
@Ershad Wa alaikum assalam
12:02
@Dynamic are you really 13 years old?
@Ershad Yuppers :-)
@Dynamic You are making me ashamed of myself.
@Ershad Why?
you are thirteen
?
@AlUmmat Yes
12:04
@Dynamic :P
I never new
@Dynamic Well, judging from your posts not just here in programmers and elsewhere, you seem older than you really are
@Ershad :-)
what do you study?
@Ershad In my free time I do a lot of Physics/Computer Science. I should be doing more Islamic studies, but I haven't gotten into a good habit of reading Quran everyday.
@Dynamic There is nothing wrong with doing Physics infact I love physics as well. As long as you balance both, it is all good, insha Allah.
12:09
I thought there would be a lot more activity, but it seems we are getting less questions.
yeah it would seem that people keep joining and we get 166 members and than they delete their accounts and we get 144 members

ErshadMy request is regarding this question. This user seems to be "not-so-good" in English. Hence, initially his question came off as offensive. Assalamualikum va Rahmatullah Brothers/Sisters
wailaikumusalam @Ahmadi
How's everything going today?
thanks to God
until we God watch us all things is good
even if we got sick
here is a poem in Iran:
anything comes from the friend is good
is there any bad happening if it is from God?
:)
All good and bad happens from Allah's Qadr
14:01
bad happenings are clean up of sins
yes
@Ershad There's something very fascinating about your rep points right now
Salam alaikum :)
@PowerInside And that is?
14:06
@BadgerGirl Wailikumusalam
@Ershad didn't notice? try to google it
@Ershad "1337"
@Ershad It changed now.. since you gained a few rep points.. :/
lol you're so fast with rep points
@PowerInside lol..
did you mean this - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet
@Ershad Exactly
@PowerInside Interesting, this is something new :)
14:34
Wow, you need 4 witnesses to prove zina?
I wonder if there has been a case where there was enough proof.
@BadgerGirl There have been several self confessions
unless the two who committed the zina tell, you will need to have 4 wittneses
assalaamu 'alaykum
@goldPseudo walaykkum assalam
What about a case where there were enough witnesses?
14:38
@goldPseudo wa alaikum salam
I am not aware. But, self confessions are recorded in some hadiths. And you should know, it is absolutely impermissible to blame a chaste woman
@goldPseudo wa alaykum salam
some (but not all) interpretations consider pregnancy sufficient proof of zina.
"Truly, those who cast blame upon chaste (but) indiscreet believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter. And there will be a tremendous punishment for them, on the Day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will testify against them concerning what they used to do. (al-Nur: 23-24)
@goldPseudo What if she was raped?
14:42
that's the reasoning behind most interpretations not considering it acceptable. it's a minority opinion, as far as I know.
i don't have references handy so i can't post them. just something i read some time back.
@BadgerGirl Islam is not fan o fkilling people. some rules have psychologic aspects to people fear some acts.
in fact in rare cases 4 wittness can be found.
@Ahmadi really? is there a documented case?
@BadgerGirl And did you know the 4 witnesses are not simple witnesses. They must have witnessed the penetration.
Islam love women and does not like to kill them so make difficult terms for killing thm :) but rules for killing men are easy :(
I wouldn't say that. Islam is just.
14:45
@Ershad I can't imagine that ever happening.
for who the 4 wittness is found also has other terms
only married women include stonning
anyway there are many terms that finally 99.999% women does not include stonning
@BadgerGirl Yes, because it is a matter of life and death if the woman is married.
but if finally had all terms the punish is stonning
I do not knoe any documented case
Okay, I gotta go. Bye everyone. Good day
also rules about marriage are easy but tules about dicorce are difficult.
14:47
@Ershad Bye, good day :)
all rules of Islam are Just.
diccicule and easy rules can be Just
before Islam Arabs had many bad behaviours with woman
and considered it shame
so buried any female baby alive
but Islam opposed it
and so in Islam there is high value for woman
@muntoo - i say go ahead with the reddit post :) bismillah!
prophet respected his daughter too much
Oh, did arabs have any religion before islam?
some of Arabs were on "religion of Ibrahim S.A."
like fathers of prophet
but most of them were pagan and idol worshippers
they had 360 idols in mecca
each idol was for one tribe
and they worshipped them
this vers is about the female babies were buried alive:
[81:9] For what sin she was killed
idols were in Kaaba
but when prophet conquered mecca first destroyed them
Abu Sufyan was the Boss of mecca
Abu Sufyan always wanted to kill prophet
and for pressures of Abu Sufyan prophet immigrated to Medina
and also when prophet was in medina
Abu Sufyan made 3 main wars against prophet
the first wars of Islam (Bard Uhod Khandaq) was leaded by Abu Sufyan
but when prophet conquered mecca Abu Sufyan feard too much and said:
I accepted Islam!
there are some Hadith that proves Abu Sufyan never accepted Islam with his heart and did not beleived in existance of God and revelation
his own sayings are recorded in hadith books
Muaviyeh was son of Abu Sufyan
and Yazid was son of Muaviyeh
they always were enemy of Islam although apparantly were Muslim
they are founders of Umayyids
Umayyid is name of their father and boss of their tribe
ancestor
prophet and Ali S.A. killed many of their relatives in Bard and Uhod wars
so they had great hate of prophet
14:59
@BadgerGirl - just FYI @Ahmadi is telling you about the Shi'a view of history
most of his premises are soundly rejected by Sunnis
