Arabic Language & Usage

Proposed Q&A site for people who want to learn or enhance their Arabic.

Currently in definition.

No commitment... just following.
too late. i already am.
@Dynamic Alhamdulillah, this is a very interesting proposal
so am I
I'm already too :-)
:)
I think that member Mohammad Yaseen might be interested
@AlUmmat Why?
00:12
@Dynamic He was telling me that he is learning Arabic and he asked useful sites where you can learn Arabic, well I gave 2 to Him, even though this proposal might be in the follow stage, when it becomes beta he might find it interesting
@goldPseudo I found out what went wrong when I created that chat room the other day, I did not make Islam.SE a related site.
yeah, i figured as much.
i know it can be set while creating a room, just surprised that there's no way to change it after the room is created.
@goldPseudo yeah, that is a sadness
should it be created again before tomorrow? or would we wait a while?
00:28
i think we can hold off.
we can worry about it if traffic starts picking up
@goldPseudo ok.
we've got some good answers to how do we promote this site

Q: How do we promote our site?

Al UmmatI am not sure if this is early or not , but I believe it is a good one to ask before the public beta. I got this from the seven essential question for every meta How do we promote our site? This is rapidly becoming a hot issue across the entire network: how to promote your site and how to rea...

woo! auto-posting works!
I guess this means "How many Sunnis does it take to screw in a light bulb?" is right out now.
I do not understand
it is a terrible joke. you are probably better off not understanding.
lol @goldPseudo
i agree with robert's post but not with the analogy to programmers and lightbulbs or programmers and favorite whatever
i didn't think muslim charities was off topic
the charities question was dodgy. it could be reworked to be more clearly on-topic.
as worded, it was a bit too "list question".
if it was coming from a different angle, e.g., "Does such-and-such a charity distribute funds in an Islamically-acceptable manner?", i think it would be very much fine.
01:11
Is Robert Cartaino a muslim? does anyone know
i doubt it.
i've heard nothing either way.
he's a stack exchange employee who handles new sites and liaises with them
yeah. Director of Community Development is his title.
hmm.. ok
he's been through enough new proposals to stop us from self-destructing during the beta.
01:14
good :)
but once we get our own diamond mods, he'll pull back and more-or-less let us run ourselves.
sorry, what is a diamond mod?

Did you guys know that when you eat sugar it changes sugar to alcohol in your gut?
doesn't surprise me. alcohol is a common breakdown product of sugar.
@AlUmmat Where exactly is the 'gut'?
@muntoo Your insides.
@AlUmmat What I meant was, esophagus (terribly unlikely), stomach, smaller intestines, liver, etc.
This (unreliable source) contradicts what you said: wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_sugar_turn_into_alcohol
@muntoo all those are the gut, at least that is what I am told, but here I think gut means the stomach.
01:39
probably intestines.
sugar + yeast = alcohol. human gut flora typically contains yeast.
@muntoo The source tells the truth, but the sources question wasn't asking if it turns into alcohol inside your body.
@AlUmmat Yeah, but the answer did mention it. :)
Also, this was under the category of Alcoholism which indicates it has something to do with Alcohol<->Body anyways...
@muntoo When I heard about this, I asked if this makes you drunk, I was told no but it does give you mood swings
@muntoo and after hearing this I understand why they call sugar in Arabic Sukar, and drunkenness in Arabic is Sukarra
@AlUmmat Too much sugar isn't good anyways. Low and high blood sugar levels can both cause a variety of symptoms including mood swings (livestrong.com/article/…)
Ethanol and glucose are quite similar in chemical make up.
@muntoo yes, but did you know honey destroys what sugar does, no wonder why the Prophet liked honey, of course that is only one reason of Him liking honey. And when I say honey I mean real honey
01:53
@AlUmmat Hmm... can't find any sources that suggest honey reverses the effects of sugar. But it is probably a better alternative to sugar.
Isn't sugar cane exclusive to South America?
@muntoo yes and dates are too, no I am not sure
Oh, wait, no it's in any tropical region, like South Asia.
I think Dates can be found anywhere in dry climates. Not sure if they're native to the Americas as well, though...
Oh, wait, you meant dates are better alternatives. :) Well, I suppose it depends on whether you like mixing dates in your coffee...
most muslims don't seem to approve of coffee dates.

yes my bad jokes are on a roll today folks.
well Asalamu wa alikum, speak to you guys tomorrow, and if Mohammad Yaseen comes into this room and I am not here please tell him about the Arabic proposal if you do not mind :)

You can also have a chat with him.
Like, make a new room with him.
@muntoo yes but first I must see if he is online, and if he isn't online when I am online than I can not chat with him, or when I am not online and he is

@tachyons - not yet, after the public launch
6
A: How long will the site stay in private beta?

Robert CartainoLaunch Date Announced Barring any technical difficulties, this site is confirmed to go public on Tuesday afternoon, 6/26.

this stated we are going public today?
God willing.
we are six days into private not 7
still Monday evening here.
roughly fifteen to twenty hours to go.
depending on what they mean by 'afternoon'.
oh well time difference......but still this means our site is indeed performing better than most sites!!!!
03:57
we seem to be operating well within acceptable parameters.
even Robert thinks we'll have no problem getting a good question flow.
"From all early indications, this site will have no trouble gaining genuine, organic participation from people who are actually having these problems."
but still a few chunks to clear out.. and one more thing ..why arent people accepting answers to their questions?
lots of questions without accepted answers
i dislike accepting answers that aren't perfect and awesome.
but that's just me. can't speak for everyone else.
no i dont mean poorly worded and lack of research answers... i mean proper ones
& are you sure we are allowed coffee dates? :P
i'm all for coffee dates. i like coffee.
i personally think we should avoid the "accept answers or you're bad" mentality that is prevalent on other sites. we should be better than that.
accepting an answer is hardly obligatory.
neither do i follow "accept answers or you're bad" but if an answer is good OP must accept it
well what do you mean by "dates"?
04:06
well, in context we were talking about using dates as a replacement for sugar in your coffee. i had just made a bad joke.
paralleling the fruit 'date' with the fact that most muslims seem to think that 'dating' is haram.
it was funny.
most muslims seem to think that 'dating' is haram It is, isnt it?
show me proof and i'll agree.
Of cource it is
i have found nothing proving it. just a lot of conjecture.
@goldPseudo, what you accept as a proof
04:08
dating involves physical touch (might not be on the first date but 2, 3 and there after)
no it doesn't.
the Qur'an is proof. substantial evidence from hadiths would at least indicate it's against the sunnah (may or may not be proof, depends on the evidences).
everything i have read on this topic indicates the prohibition is cultural, not religious.
well see this 2:235
it roughly translates to " You commit no sin by announcing your engagement to the women, or keeping it secret. GOD knows that you will think about them. Do not meet them secretly, unless you have something righteous to discuss. Do not consummate the marriage until their interim is fulfilled. You should know that GOD knows your innermost thoughts, and observe Him."
yes it does. it is not, however, proof against dating. unless you're claiming that dating automatically involves secret meetings of unrighteous discussions.
which it doesn't.
well searchin on the net gives me this - halal dating
meeting in the presence of a chaperone and strictly no physical intimacy
the Qur'an gives explicit commands how how believing men and women are supposed to behave. "Lower the gaze" and "guard your modesty" and all that. As long as the Quran'ic commandments are followed, I know of no evidences that "dating" is haram.
And i will NOT call anything haram without explicit evidences.
04:20
well if i Lower the gaze how will i look at her? :P
(a) that implies that looking at her is necessary for dating. (b) that implies that a man isn't allowed to look at a woman he intends to marry (there are hadiths allowing it, i can dig them up if need be). and (c) it implies that "lower the gaze" means "don't look at her at all".
so?
i cant understand what you conclude from all that
i conclude nothing.
i am merely making statements.
my conclusion is as i stated before. i will not call dating haram without clear evidences.
04:25
If (a) &(b) are put together ......
well i thing i am agreeing to you
i don't want to make this sound like i agree with the form of "having a girlfriend" dating that is popular nowadays. But dating someone with the intention of marriage, I see absolutely nothing against.
also dating does necessarily mean physical contact (read sexual intercourse)
that is the main thing islam forbids
reading articles on the net about dating has this point everywhere that dating leads to sex
which is .. well.. wrong
"While the term has several meanings, it usually refers to the act of meeting and engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity in public, together, as a couple."
that what we think, not every1. The definition usually gets extended to add physical intimacy in secrecy.
irrelevant. what two people do while dating is up to those two people.
04:35
or .. well .. in public too.
forbidding it just because other people might use it for nefarious purposes is hardly just.
to me, that's no different than forbidding people from using the internet at all because other people use it to download porn.
@goldPseudo Islam always thnks of the future prospects of any action. So getting into dating while some like us do it halal way most people cant control themselves and lead astray into the haram world. I think thats y it is considered haram... but your point makes sense too
if you worry that it'll lead you astray, then avoid it. that's sunnah.
but that's not the same as calling it haram.
lets try posting a question about this.. i bet all of them will say no
@goldPseudo define dating
and take it from a khalwah angle - khalwah is prohibited clearly
04:41
well i had already posted one before i think it was poorly worded
9 mins ago, by goldPseudo
"While the term has several meanings, it usually refers to the act of meeting and engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity in public, together, as a couple."
i'm not familiar with the word khalwah
this is a perfect definition
man and woman being alone together
technically the definition says closed room
the closest thing i've seen to a prohibition of being alone together is the "satan is the third" hadith.
which i read just as easily as a very stern (and well-deserved) warning, rather than an outright prohibition.
in any case, the whole no flirting and lowering gaze thing leads to restrictions on "hanging out"
and talking just generally
if you need to talk to figure out whether you;re compatible for marriage go ahead
04:43
but even if you accept the no-man-and-woman-alone prohibition, that says nothing against chaperoned dates, or double-dating, or the like.
i don't see an issue with chaperoned dates, as long as the intention is clear - only figuring out marriage compatibility
and it's dodgy whether it even applies to going out in public, such as to a restaurant.
that's the only situation it might be allowed
well
my teachers say that even if it's in public, if nobody is with you, it counts as khalwah
and khalwah is prohibited
i think there is more than the satan is third hadith
i agree. if the intention is not for marriage compatibility, then it's much less acceptable.
but the ruling on khalwah is that is it not allowed
in any case, these are exceptions to the rule
04:46
but it sometimes happens that late at night you are in a train and voila there is a lady in the same compartment and no one else... then what do you do... thats khalwah isnt it
well try to avoid it the best you can
for example i try to avoid getting into an elevator if the only other passenger is a lady
another example would be two coworkers who have to work late on an important job, one happens to be male and one happens to be female.
inshaAllah the intention is rewarded
or the classic 'woman is sick and only male doctors are available'.
if you can't avoid it, then Allah says fear Him as much as you can (surat taghabun)
04:48
@Ansari so there you are
those are both cases of necessity - again, exceptions
that was the whole point of my discussion with @goldPseudo
the thing is if you try to make exceptions the norm, you'll fall into the haram
there are exceptions to gheebah, but if you start relying on them to do gheebah, you'll fall into the haram
@goldPseudo said it before
9 mins ago, by goldPseudo
if you worry that it'll lead you astray, then avoid it. that's sunnah.
anyway
wrong place for gender interaction discussion
it's been hashed out dozens of times :)
check with the scholars you follow and leave it at that
04:50
i don't follow scholars (per-se).
@Ansari nope chat is meant for everything
fas'alu ahl adh-dhikri in kuntum la ta'lamoon
if you're not a mujtahid, you follow scholar(s)
i read scholars, i follow their logic and their evidences. but i do not allow scholars to prohibit what God has not prohibited, or allow what God has not allowed.
well if someone does that, you wouldn't follow them
or listen to them
there's a fine line between following scholars, and worshipping scholars. i prefer to stay as far from that line as i can and still seek knowledge.
04:52
ok let me be pedantic and reword my earlier statement
check what the scholars you respect have to say about this topic and examine their evidences (if you are qualified to sift through dala'il) and leave it at that
:)
fair enough.
(at least I thought the joke that started this was funny. :p)
no argument from me :)
i even starred it way back
05:22
regarding this question
2
Q: Can non-Muslims enter a Mosque or prayer room?

refhatIS it allowed for non muslims to enter a prayer room?? i have seen some non muslims coming into a muslim prayer room and praying is allowed?

is it fine to keep non-muslim stuff in the mosque on a non-muslims behalf for a temporary (short) time.
sorry..i misread your question.
i know nothing against keeping anything owned by a non-muslim in the mosque.
(assuming it's not idols or the like, obviously)
05:51
@goldPseudo well i meant idols. i had about a year ago read news of a mosques allowing to keep idols because of the rains
That's probably worth it's own question. I know of no evidences outright forbidding it, but the hadith of the 360 idols alone would clearly suggest it's against sunnah.
@goldPseudo but that question about idols would be too localized
i don't think it's too localized, since the general ruling would apply to any similar situation.
well what are "divination arrows"?
it was a lot like drawing lots, i think.
if you wanted to make a decision, you would write your choices on arrows and pull one at random.
or something like that. i'm not really familiar with the exact practice, but it's clearly haram.
"... and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience..." Qur'an 5:3
if you're worried about the idols question being too localized, you could just expand it to "Is it acceptable to store haram things in a masjid?", which would open it up to idols, as well as things like tools used for gambling, or for pork, or etc. use the story about protecting the idols from the rain to give context.

@MohammadYaseen good good :) alhamdulillah
@AlUmmat It is in very early stages though
@MohammadYaseen it is in the follow stage, the first stage,
@AlUmmat when will the private beta be over?
@MohammadYaseen for Islam.SE? today
Insha'Allah
10:26
@AlUmmat Great then, where can i read what will happen after that, and what would the next stages be?
@MohammadYaseen I am not sure
@AlUmmat Are you from KSA? If yes, what is the medium of education there?
@MohammadYaseen no sorry, what is KSA?
@AlUmmat Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
@MohammadYaseen I am from Syria
10:38
@AlUmmat شام؟
@MohammadYaseen نعم
@AlUmmat can i get some Arabic textbook taught in elementary classes. I tried newspapers but they are of too high standard. MadinahArabic seems not to be updated now.
@MohammadYaseen they are in english though

Q: Another problem with arabic font

AshuWell i recently came across this problem. The problem is that arabic font cannot be put on two separate lines eg The text was typed like this. But it ends up like this. What ever i did the text never went on two separate line. Any solution for this?

@AlUmmat My english is better (i won't say good) But i intend to use these for practicing Arabic. Anyways thanks. JazakAllah
10:52
@MohammadYaseen Alhamdulillah
@AlUmmat what is Arabic equivalent of "why"? like Is this = ا ھذا
@AlUmmat and how do you write Arabic with diacritical marks , tanwin, shadda and others
@MohammadYaseen do you know what the shedda and all the tanwins are?
@AlUmmat They correspond to articles ?
@MohammadYaseen I am sorry, can ou explain what you mean by articles?
Like double tanwin is indefinite article and ال is definite article
@AlUmmat And you probably missed my question about "why"
11:09
@MohammadYaseen no
@MohammadYaseen oh, well the tanwin and all the punctuations go above words, they are there for understanding, if you know how to manipulate these punctuations you will be able to change the meaning. Now ھذا is "Why?"
@AlUmmat Doesn't ھذا = This ?
@AlUmmat Please let me know if i am troubling you too much and If this is some off-topic stuff!
@MohammadYaseen I am so sorry, my brain is like not on totally :) ھذا means this, لماذا means why
@MohammadYaseen are you still there
@AlUmmat Yes, so, is my info. about tanwin is correct?
@MohammadYaseen it seems to be, if you study Arabic more deeply, or when you learn more, you will know that there are rules for tanwin
@AlUmmat Yes, that is why I'm learning.
11:23
@MohammadYaseen good :)
@AlUmmat You probably missed my question about "How do you write arabic" with diacritical marks
@MohammadYaseen I am sorry, if you want to write for instance hit but from the past with the punctuations it would look like this, ضَرَبَ
Reddit is a very bad idea,.. I am not sure if they are aware of our stackexchange site gaining momentum, because here's the recent news. I wouldn't suggest posting our community there once we get out of private beta.. or else expert a flood of flaming, trolls and all that stuff..
@AlUmmat I guess i am wrongly understood, :) I do know how to write arabic with and without marks. What i was asking is that "How do you get these from keyboard".Like what font (or some other software?) you use.
Now I have no Idea about that, I am using windows XP, and I have the Arabic language enabled. I have a english keyboard but I have memorized where all the Arabic keys are, but if you want you can use the Google
translate keyboard
11:34
@PowerInside A sad one!
@MohammadYaseen I have arabic letters on my keyboard. I bought my laptop from Middle East.

@Dynamic Good Idea. I have proposed some synonyms for the sharia tag
@AlUmmat are not synonyms. Neither is . They do not all mean the same thing.
is good though.
@Dynamic that is a waste... it is better to have only a general tag... later on somebody will tell i want to have a tag for adam , jesus etc, then what?
@Dynamic no but halal haram, go into sharia
I understand the punishment tag
@AlUmmat If they go into sharia, you want to propose a tag merge. Don't synonymise them.
@Ashu See my above message.
@Dynamic how do I propose a tag merge?
12:51
@AlUmmat Well, really, you might want to wait until we get some mods, then ask them. They have the power to do that.
Usually you just make a meta post asking for the merge, and wait to see what others think.
@Dynamic ok:)
Then a mod will merge them.
dont make a new post there is already one post regarding that

give me an eg
@Ashu I don't know really. But that doesn't mean it isn't a valid question :-)
13:33
and by prayer what do you mean - namaz?
@Ashu Yes he means namaz
Well, our Salah is more than just physical movements. When one is in sujud, that is the most peaceful time in the world..most closer to lord. Say if a non-muslim looking for answers...
i have never heard of this happening.. well how does the person know how to pray namaz

@goldPseudo Are coffee dates allowed in Islam? Can you cite any references to it?
@goldPseudo :P
Oh this sucks, I only got 4 upvotes left for today..
13:58
@PowerInside well finish them off you get a badge
@PowerInside If you use them all, you get a badge :)
