Someone gave the "words of divorce" answer an excellent?!
when it gives nothing but a link to islamQA... not even a link to a question that actually provides the answer, just a link to the category...
this is why we're still in beta... :(
not so much because of the vote, just because there's still people who (a) think that this is an answer worth posting, (b) don't bother to flag downvote and/or leave constructive criticism for this post despite it being up for almost two months and (c) don't actually answer the question (regardless of whether it be due to apathy or lack of knowledge).
need to write a meta post. the results of this review are just...bad.
brain's not in a meta place right now.
@goldPseudo perhaps you might consider putting it into a blog post unless it is best for it to be on meta?
04:44
yeah, meta is best for this, i reckon.
might be able to get a blog post out of it, but it would mostly just be me repeating pretty much the same things i've been saying for years.
05:11
Salaam alaykum. I wanted to know if the recent question on ISIS was deleted exactly because being off-topic or some other reasons. Because there have been some other political questions even on the same topic very recently that didn't get closed.
Politics on-topic vs off-topic is another area that we need to work on meta to regulate accurately. mods' decisions seems to be selective or based on personal judgment in this area.
@infatuated if i see something that needs closing, i'mma close it, but i can hardly see everything that gets posted.
2
's why we need the community to close posts, not mods.
@Mujahidمجاهد, hmm, fair enough but still I think we can do better not giving the impression of being selective on an identical topic!
we are not a site of rules and policies. the sooner users understand that, the better.
we are a site of community, and community decisions are subjective and at times non-sensical.
@goldPseudo, agreed with the need for community participation. but as for this particular one it was closed by moderator binding vote.
yeah, i closed it because i read it and it looked off-topic.
so i closed it as off-topic.
bing bang boom.
05:21
hehe!
if you think there's any reason to keep that thing open, make a case for it on meta. garner community support.
and part of community moderation is to criticize decisions that we think are not reasoanble.
sure, but I thought we can also discuss it here as we are around.
if you're going to criticise, do it constructively. if all you're doing is whinging because you disagree with someone, it's just a waste of everyone's time.
@infatuated perhaps instead of criticizing decisions, the community can agree on another decision
if you disagree with a decision i made personally, fine. that's your prerogative.
05:25
but it is not too much personal as I'm criticizing a general trend of selective treatment of decisions on identical topics that come from pretty much one moderator.
that's why i thought it is better to discuss it personally with that mod to see if there are legitimate reasons for that trend which I might not know.
i close what i want to close.
i vote how i want to vote.
just like every other member of the community.
but we are not supposed to vote arbitrarily that's why there are rules and consensus.

not a site of rules?! are you serious? we have a load of rules and policies that have been agreed by the community. so community and rules go hand in hand!
and people still post whatever they want whenever they want.
if community cared about the rules, they'd be voting and flagging to defend them.
but you can't just throw a policy on meta and then expect it to stick.
if the most visible voter on the community is a moderator, then yes, the moderator is going to be doing most of the everything.
05:30
right on that. I agree that we don't have a productive committed community but I think that also doesn't justify acting arbitrarily by those contributing members who are supposed to "lead by example" as we say!
i am leading by example.
if you disagree with the example i'm setting, so be it. but that's still an example, and i'm still leading by it.
you do that in a very large good degree but there seems to be some slips every now and then, which is expected and many others of us also do maybe even more frequently than you, but i think when noticed they should not be defended!
if i make a mistake, so be it.
alright, I have no more to say!

Q: Why was the islamic law related question put on hold?

AhlelbaytI am getting following message in the question Is ISIS performing under Islamic rules?: put on hold as off-topic by goto, goldPseudo♦ 16 hours ago I dont think this is a political question but a question which asks about the validity of the actions of ISIS , it is like asking "XYZ" is doing...

@goldPseudo This is no use for it really @goldPseudo. I have seen you closed questions. Then the community opened it and you closed it again :) Nothing beats you :)
What I think we closed these questions are probably because we are afraid, it might bring out some wicked truth out of Islam, which in fact is reality.
I think questions can be closed if they garner partisan and inappropriate responses. But if not, they can stay open. Actually many would be interested in knowing is ISIS really operate on Islamic Principles or not?
alternatively, they could be closed because they are non constructive under the Stack Exchange model.
you've been pushing a "don't close anything ever" methodology for as far back as I can remember.
that is not the Stack Exchange way.
what you propose is just letting this site degrade into exactly the sort of unfocussed forum blahblah that Stack Exchange was built and designed to prevent.

@infatuated If I may add my 2c, the point of discussing mod decisions on meta rather then in here is that in chat your only chance is to persuade the mod that their decision was wrong by their own standard, on meta you can address/persuade/canvas the community who the mods are serving. Seeing as this has now come up on meta, you've got an excellent chance to make your case there.
fwiw I think that question is off-topic for the reason given, too broad and primarily opinion-based.
"Do they do what they do" - unless that is made a lot more specific, how can an answer possibly address everything 'they' do without writing a whole book.
"is there any authentic narration" - who gets to define what is 'authentic' on this site? that's just opinion-bait.
meh, I'll take my own advice and say all that on meta

A: Why was the islamic law related question put on hold?

Jack DouglasI think you are doing the right thing by bringing this up here on meta - that is the constructive way of allowing the community to speak up and to address a bad decision if there has been one - so you have my +1 to say "thanks for bringing this up in the right place and the right way" but not to ...
