12:34 AM
apparently i'm the local expert on .
over three times as experty as anyone else.

2 hours later…
2:21 AM
huh. i'm second only to Abdullah in "Sunni" expertise. that's all sorts of not right.

By the way, maybe we can organize tags when we have time
I remember seeing some tags that could be merged or deleted

that's what i've been doing. just going through my own tag history and cleaning up.
mostly "Hey, I'm no expert in quran. Let's go through these questions to see why the system thinks I am."

ah, good ol' untagged.

is it enforced by the system?

2:25 AM
automatically created by the system.
system automatically deletes tags that don't get love. if there's only one question with a particular tag for a year, it'll get scrubbed because one-question-tags are useless tags.

I am 4th best Qur'an asker!

if there's no tag left on the question after that, it goes into untagged.
woo! i'm the local expert on !
and, apparently, . :/

I am top last 30 day askers on Hadith.
sorry, I mean answerer
Hey, even if post is not tagged, system can recognize the words in them that are tags, and counts them
That is kind of neat :)

really?
i've been cleaning up a lot of tags lately. maybe it's just one that's been edited and hasn't refreshed yet?
i'm also a local expert in .

@goldPseudo Actually, I guess I am mistaken. Nevermind
I am top tafseer asker

2:36 AM
i'm considering writing a meta post suggesting everyone get some tag cleanup done. there's a lot of messy tags all up in this joint.

I guess my biggest contribution to community was asking questions.

just a general "Great Tag Cleanup Project" type thing. everyone knows what they are (or should) be experts in, so they should know how best to apply those tags.
@yasar11732 well, you're apparently one of who-knows-how-many users who are experts in . it's your best tag :p

I don't thing everyone cleaning their own tags would work as much as you think, because we have lots of users who just ask couple of questions and disappear.
Someone should clean up after them

well, the thing is, the tag score is based on answers.
while the tags are placed on questions.
so we'd get the people who write answers cleaning up after the questioners anyway.

Do we have experts?

2:41 AM
[tag:shaving]
or [meta-tag:discussion] for tags on meta.

Ok, thanks :)
How did you escape it though?

backticks.

By the way, is something you can be expert in?
I don't think you can escape backtick :)

i tried.
if we had i would not be an expert in it.
i reckon source-identification can have experts. basically that would be based on how large a library one has access to and how well one can navigate it.
a hadith scholar who could correctly rattle off chapter and verse of any major references would well-deserve being recognized as that sort of expert.
or someone with incredible google-fu.

I think most source identification questions would be hadith questions
But I guess they are not exactly the same
And since we require references, all questions can be seen as source-identification in some way or another?

2:53 AM
i could probably stand to clear up that tag wiki.

"Is this true" <--?--> "Where it is said that this is true" => will elicit similiar answers

source-identification is basically for "I'm trying to find this particular hadith" type questions.
not "Is there any hadith supporting such-and-such"
like if you've heard a hadith quoted or paraphrased, and want to find the actual text of it.
or if a hadith is mentioned in an essay, and you want to find the original source of it.

ok, so if the asker doesn't know what exactly he is looking for, it is not to be tagged source identification?

pretty much.

Q: Is raising hands in du'a (dua) bid'ah?

Al UmmatI have many questions about that: Is raising one's hands for du'a after each and every salat bid'a? Is it true that the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) never really raised his hands in Du'a except in Salat Istisqa'a (salat in which people ask Allah to bring rains)? Are there other instances where t...

What do you think?

2:56 AM
yeah, that one wouldn't be a good use for . , probably.
which i more-or-less created just because i didn't want those types of questions polluting my source-identification tag :)

Q: Can Allah create a rock that He can't lift?

MhmdIf Allah has all the power and can do anything can he create something (e.g. a rock) that he himself can't lift? If the answer was no doesn't that mean that he is not able to do something which contradicts the view of Islam that Allah can do anything?

see, this is why we need tag cleanups :p

By the way, I have a very good answer to that question but it is kind of one liner :/

one liners can still be good answers. it's rare, but it happens.
that's why the system shunts such things into the LQ queue instead of just automatically deleting them.

How about this;

Lifting means overpowering gravity, verb lifting in its literal sense doesn't apply to God, because it is God who decides what is gravity and how it works. Therefore, question is paradoxical in itself.
or, something similiar
If God needed to lift something, it would require other source of power outside of God, which is inconsistent with our definition of God
Would this answer work?
Well, according to me, the question doesn't even make any sense, I am not sure why some people are obsessed with it.

3:06 AM
i'm not a fan of such questions in general. in my experience, they're more often used to trick people than they are for actual philosophical insight.
"Can God create a triangle with four sides?"

Hey, that is actually a good example why this question is not valid.

you basically need to be an expert in formal logic to handle something like this effectively.

I will take a shot at it, the worst I can get is couple of downvotes :)

woo. my tag score list is up to date again.
i'm still most expert in quran though.
don't want to flood too much of the front page with tag edits right now.

It would be nice if tag edits didn't show up on homepage

3:14 AM
well, yes and no. i'm not comfortable with the idea that anything can be edited without being bumped, otherwise the peer-review system takes a hit.
not sure how abusive tag edits can actually end up being, but it's still nice to know that such edits can't bypass the radar entirely.

Q: Allow non-bumping minor edits, but review them on /review

Mad ScientistEvery edit, no matter how minor, bumps a question to the frontpage of an SE site. @yasar11732 you're not the first to think of it :)

:)
@goldPseudo Can I use your example in my answer?

knock yourself out.

A: Can Allah create a rock that He can't lift?

yasar11732Lifting involves applying force grater than gravity to an item in the opposite direction of gravity. To be able to lift something, you need to overcome gravity. The lifting action doesn't apply to Allah (c.c) in it's literal sense, because Allah (c.c) doesn't need to overcome gravity, because, ...

I gave my shot at it, I hope it was good.

@BleedingFingers Salam brother, when two text are using one Arabic Islamic source book the issue is different and similarity of some words can be accepted. because in fact they are translating same text. unless the sentences is exactly copied. I can not say any percent but if I compare two text I can judge if there is any plagiarism or not.
in this case I consider the similarity because of both content are translating from the same Arabic source. also we can believe in what our users say. if they say I did not plagiarized it we can consider this a honestly expression. we can trust our users of community and do not treat they like an enemy in war. there is not enough evidence for proving it is plagiarized so we can trust the user and leave it.
Also in Islamic ethics the default is considering others honest. being suspicious to others is banned in Islam. tanzil.net/#49:12

@goldPseudo what third-party text are you referring to here?
@BattleofKarbala I try my best to give the benefit of doubt when there is lack of evidence. But in the case of that answer. The evidences, referred to in the search links, are glaring.
There is no question of honesty here. The author AFAIK hasn't claimed that he didn't copy content from elsewhere in the face of the evidence.
@BattleofKarbala May I know the *exact * Islamic Arabic source you're referring to? Translating an Arabic source word by word into the answer can also be considered as copy-paste. Way I see it.

@BleedingFingers It's not plagiarism per se, since it's attributed at the front of the post, but a lot of the text is just a direct translation (possibly self-translated; it doesn't come up in google searches) of Ghazali's book.
the problem was mostly formatting. i tried to edit it before leaving the comment to block quote things properly, but it was such a mess i left it as futile.

Since more people are here, I will re-ask this question;
3 hours ago, by yasar11732
Do you think it would be good to have tags for each surah of Qur'an, so that they can be applied to tafseer questions?

4:03 PM
i'm hardly a mufassir, but i'm not sure that would be useful.
the real question with tags would basically be "is anyone likely to sort and/or filter based on that tag?"
is there anyone that would care about in particular, compared to just ?

If someone had a deep study of say, ya-sin, they can follow that tag. I am unaware of any such users right now, but we could have those in feature

(as compared to tagging it and )

@yasar11732 it may be usefull especially for some Suar, like suratinnisa' and others, but there are 114 surahs in the Quran so really it may be useful and it may be kind of overwhelming, some maybe used others may not

i can see it being useful to some users, but i reckon it's better to let those users create the tags themselves. not something we should try to create up front.
i've created some tags of questionable use myself (which eventually got automatically deleted because nobody else used them).

and it will be alot of tags
kind of messy

4:07 PM
there's no real harm in creating extra tags. if they're not used, they're dumped. if they are used, then there's obviously experts to which it would apply and they can decide what to do with it after that.

ok.

but the idea is ver ynice
is there any such site where you could search surah or ayah based on tags?

and seem to be duplicate

like listing ayahs based on say "human"
?
I mean based on the subject of idea

@yasar11732 bringing it up on meta would be better thing to do.
although I'm in favor of creating a specific tag for a each chapter

4:12 PM
salam @BleedingFingers

skip the "surah"

I guess best thing to do would be wait until the need arises.

and let it just be
exactly. the thing I was going to say

Yes, it looks cleaner

@BleedingFingers that could be problematic for some suwar. comes to mind.

4:16 PM
what about a which could be used in questions related to difference in practice/belief etc ?

also
@BleedingFingers I am not sure if anyone would need to search/filter by that

@Bludream salam
would do in that case

it would be very open to confusion.

a description would do. wouldn't it?

why not surat_muhammad

4:18 PM
and given how much more likely it is someone would post a question about Muhammad the prophet than about Muhammad the surah, it would probably need perpetual cleanup.
not everyone reads the descriptions before selecting tags.

@yasar11732 in that case a description would clear the confusion
@Bludream i think that's just redundant
or we could make an exception in those case

Should we merge and

@yasar11732 possibly. that should probably go on meta though.

there's a lot of questions in both of those tags which would need to be checked.

4:22 PM
nahh. I think those have subtle differences

I don't see how one of them wouldn't apply to other

i think , , , and are all used for the same class of questions too. fatwa questions in general are a mess.
the pedant in me refuses to make "halal" a synonym with "haram" though :p

I'm maybe wrong in that case but I think there is a difference.

And all tags that start with islamic seems off to me

there could well be (hence needing to actually check the existing questions to see if they're being used differently).

4:24 PM
or maybe I need to take a look at the proper definition of haram

Actually, there is a difference. Haram means forbidden, sin means commiting something forbidden.
Haram is a judgement and sin is an act, but in the end, they are very similiar

the hanafi school considers makruh tahrim to be sinful, but not haram. the other schools don't make that distinction though.

Q: Is it necessary to have "islamic" or "muslim" in tags?

Bleeding FingersIs it necessary to have "islamic" (islamic-rules) or "muslim" (muslim-practices) in a tag? We already have a mega tag on top-left corner of the site which reads "Islam", so wouldn't tags like rules and practices do?

so would someone care to delete it,?

@AlUmmat How about using both and if one asks questions about differences between two sects?
Because if is valid, also all kind of tags like would be valid, and tags could get quite messy
cross product of all the schools of thoughts could be quite large

@yasar11732 yes that is the proper, but I don't think this could happen as long as the exists, because not only does it seem users use it to ask the differences, but they seem to also use it to ask for answer from both sunni and shia. and they even seem to use this tag even if a question already has a or tags or even both.

4:46 PM
@yasar11732 Well there could be a legitimate use case of this.

if they ask about difference between different schools of thoughts it can be tagged like this , ,

I saw this guy doing ... after/before is this an islamic practice?

yea, I like the idea of @yasar11732 it would be mouch better that way

@yasar11732 ok. But then what should be done about the tag, I believe it's purpose is a bit unclear especially observing how it is used.

There are 43 questions, wouldn't be too hard to edit manually, and tag them with sunni, shiism and remove that tag

4:51 PM
ok

@yasar11732 not sure that sort of tagging would really work.

why not?
I am unsure about comparison tag myself

i can easily see someone being interested in following and ignoring .

In that case, he wouldn't see comparison questions?

so something like that just seems like it would be confusing, especially since it's not really looking for Sunni or Shi'ite answers.

4:53 PM
no it seems good

rather, it's looking for a particular answer covering both points of view. in other words, sunni-shia.
that's just my take.

as @AlUmmat said there are 3 different use case for that currently

it's targetting a particular species of expert. i don't know that carries that same oomph.
are there experts in...comparing...things?

Yes, I didn't like comparison very much myself too :)
@goldPseudo Maybe they are very good at critical thinking

is there a standard term for Comparative-Islam (a la comparative religion?)

4:56 PM
@goldPseudo I know الفقه المقارن
not sure of comparative-islam

We can have something like for questions that seek comparison between any two schools of thought
That would apply to sunni-shiism and all other cases

but a lot of the sunni-shia stuff isn't madh'hab based.
a lot of it is history.

We have and for questions that involve history
How about

@yasar11732 we have
which also seems multi-purpose
among them comparision

doesn't necessarily involve making a comparison.

me, personally, i like if only because it gives me something i can ignore.

This tag made me kind of curios? we have no shia mod, right?

honestly, I like it too. It's simple. But at the same time it looks slightly crude and reflects on the fact that we couldn't come up with a better idea.

5:08 PM
@Bludream right

that's a little unfair

@Bludream in what way?
moderators are not chosen based on sunni or shia

@Bludream I wish I could DV that.

in a way there is no mod to defend cases where another mod acts based on his own sect

@Bludream moderators do not act based on their sect but act based on the benefit for this site they act as moderators, and if there was a problem the community team would deal with it
even if there was a shia moderator

5:11 PM
Anyone can defend their own case. What difference does it make if that someone is mod or not?

does that mean he can act on his sect but we cannot?
and anyway this site is not run by moderators
but by the community
and until that is realized we are far from graduating

well, your claim is hard to prove

@Bludream what claim?

"moderators do not act based on their sect but act based on the benefit for this site"

@Bludream then I am sorry I cannot help you think otherwise

5:14 PM
no it's ok, I understand it,
and you don't need to help me to think the way it isn't

:)

;)
it's just mods and the government system of SE
lol, have you read this?
25
Q: What form of government does StackExchange resemble?

AlexIt's not representative democracy, because the decisions are taken by the entire community, but they are weighted :P The closest one that comes into my mind is the "Venus project" :)

yes

your opinion?
which form?

@Bludream really nothing this answer doesn't say, as that is how I came understand the SE, and that is clear from the privileges page

5:20 PM
and you never really used the power of being a mod to defend sunni sect?
never when editing or voting or ...?

@Bludream I am able to vote and edit even if I weren't as a mod, so my actions as a mod are going to be no different then the actions of when I am not a mod except my actions as a moderator are accelerated. I do not defend the sunni sect, I try to defend Islam and the truth, and yes I try to do that on here but that does not get in the way of taking a moderator action.
meaning most moderator actions I take, I try to base it the best I can on the policies of this site, and such actions I don't think will be different from a sunni or shia moderator

that's it!!! I just said it would be fair to also let a shia mod exist
atleast 1

@Bludream whoever told you it is impossible?

the law of graduation and then voting for mods!

we currently have enough moderators, but you might just see a "shia" moderator in the future
@Bludream that is when we graduate, and we are far from it especially if people keep thinking that moderators run this site, and the moderators are sunni dictators

5:29 PM
It is quite possible that someone from shia sect would be appointed as a mod before the graduation, if one of the mods decides to resign or something. I don't think the idea is very far fetched.

I see we have a inactive mod

On the other hand, thinking that a mod from the shia sect would be shia moderator is problematic

@Bludream moderators have their lives, we are not required to be on the internet 24 hours and seven days

s/he would just be a moderator

anyway I think it would be better we act based on researches and proofs rather than just trying to advertise our sect

5:31 PM
I have said what I said, and I am done speaking.

I just said it would be more fair, there are cases where the mod edits or deletes bases on his personal view

anyone with enough reputation can edit and anyone with enough reputation can delete.
ANYONE.

@AlUmmat, uh ok no problem! I meant no harm. just discussing matters

there is very little that a diamond moderator can do that literally ANYONE else can't.

ehh, then why we have mods? you know when I said a mod I'm referring to just those things that ONLY mods can do

@Bludream then why do you want a "shia" moderator?

even if i wasn't a diamond moderator, i would still vote and edit and flag and delete based on what i think is best for the site.
personal view is impossible to escape; what i think is best for the site is very possibly not the same as what others think is best.

I don't want it, I just said it would be more fair! referring to my thought about not " no sect or personal view should enter that area"
@goldPseudo, so just don't say we're exception handlers.

5:43 PM
if we start any sort of affirmative action program, then where will it end? we'll need a Shi'a mod, then we'll need an Ahmadi mod, then we'll need a Qur'an-only mod, then we'll need a Hanafi mod, then we'll need a Salafi mod, then we'll need a mujtahid mod....

CalebI am a Christian. You say you are. But we are not.1 It seems that a lot of folks are having a hard time wrapping their heads around the scope of this site. While I respect the SE staff2 and have been impressed with the effort they have taken (and judgement they have shown) in nurturing this site...

@BleedingFingers ohh, I forgot about that one. It is a good one.

@Bludream this isn't about fairness, this is sectarianism!

5:46 PM
what do you mean?

Just in case we drifted too far. We were discussing tags fellas.

if you don't want to risk moderators bringing their own personal biases into site curation, you need to make sure the site can stay stable without moderator intervention.
the SE model is one of community moderation. if diamond mods need to step in for any reason, the only tool we have is the diamond hammer so every problem looks like a nail.

@Bludream the fact that you think the existence of a "shia" moderator is fair, is that you think that all the current moderators cannot do their jobs properly because their sunni view get in the way, so if there is a "shia" moderator, his shia views would get in his way and contradict the other moderators in their actions
which is not constructive, if you want a fifth moderator and call that fair then say so, but there is no such thing as a sunni or shia moderator

@BleedingFingers, right sorry for that!

if you don't want to risk moderators bringing their own personal biases into site curation, you need to make sure the site can stay stable without moderator intervention.

5:54 PM
@AlUmmat: just wanted to say my view about you mods not letting their personal view into their work
@yasar11732, exactly, and site won't be stable when mods don't do their job

interesting, I didn't realize we have a tag

huh. no description as usual
will need to spend time on that

I didn't realize we had

i'm apparently the expert on .

offtopic: @AlUmmat There is a difference in Arabic between "Allazi pray" and "mu-pray-oon" right?

6:00 PM
ok then brothers , have a nice time! see you khodahafez

what about ? :p

should we merge with or ?

@Bludream take-care
@AlUmmat neither

@Bludream yes, take care, salam Alaikum
@yasar11732 sorry I don't understand, I can't really read transliteration

Allazi -> those
pray -> make salah
mu-pray-oon -> Also, those who make salah
But I guess there is a difference between them

6:04 PM
ok I seem to get the first one
الذي يصلي
but the second? "المصلون" ?
first one who prays, second those who pray

Hmm. I thought first one meant those who pray occasionally, and second one meant who who pray consistently.
Because I thought if you put "moo" at the beginning, it would indicate a constant character.

@yasar11732 as for the first, it is referring to one, as for the second, I am only guessing what the transliteration says

@AlUmmat I will try to find examples

@yasar11732 the waw at the end refers to a group

The second one: quran.com/70/22
First one: quran.com/33/43
If for example, this ayah said, la musalloo, instead of la salla, would it make a difference.

6:18 PM
there is major difference between the three
in the first it is refering to one, and with the context it is referring to Allah
in the second it is referring to a group, but because I guessed it had waw Jama'a, but with the context it is referring to anyone who matches the description
as for the third
it is by itself refers to one
but with the context it refers to the one who is the loser on Yamul Qiyamah
@yasar11732 I am not sure if that helped

Thanks, it was helpful. I was looking at something else for a moment, so I couldn't respond

6:34 PM
@muslim1 I am in agreement with you but As a muslim we have to be polite.

@MohammadHossein Thx. I am very happy to take any criticsm. I take that as constructive.
May be I am wrong but can someone explain to me, who did I insult someone who how dare someone say to me 'shut up' and no one flags him!

1 hour later…
7:55 PM
@AlUmmat i'm pretty sure is being used for a lot of fatwa-type questions which aren't food-relevant.
there's enough questions about food/diet alone to warrant its own tag.

ok so we leave it
