Q: Does StackExchange have a feature which restricts new users from using already taken usernames?

SohaebI've seen two new users with the username "Islam" and "muslim" which has already been taken by 2 users. This will be really confusing if in the future new users decide to use these 2 names. Is there a feature we can use to restrict them from choosing a name taken by someone ? also, How do we deal...

@Islam.SE Alhamdulillah there is only one Al Ummat :)

12:18 AM
And I don't think anyone would ever take my name :D
My screen name is so unique!

:)

i've had my same username for decades.
and i'm in no hurry to start tacking numbers on the end of it. anyone else wants to be a goldPseudo, they can do the number-tacking thing. i was here first.

12:38 AM
Just curious, what does goldPseudo mean?

damned if i know.
i used to just be "Pseudo", then an IRC joke took on a life of its own.
i used to just change my prefix to show my status (awayPseudo, sleepingPseudo, workPseudo, etc)
can't even remember where "gold" came from, but it stuck.

@goldPseudo "And if someone wants to be called the same name as a dozen, or a hundred, or two thousand ninety-nine other people on the site, so be it." --> Nice conclusion

i would've posted quicker, but it took time to count all those Johns.

:) I looked for the total results in search page and couldn't find it. I guess it wasn't there after all

1:05 AM
wouldn't help anyway; the username search filters by substring.
there's only 2099 users named "John", but there's a lot more who just happen to have "John" in their username somewhere.
only fifty-eight pages plus change of just "John"

I wonder if that is the most common name

wouldn't be surprised. most common of the ones I searched.
nope. apparently it's Alex.

And John appears to be 3189

pretty sure the username search on-site filters out suspended users. i assume the data explorer doesn't, but that's just a guess.
(the idea that there's 190 suspended Johns on SO alone seems shocking, but SO's numbers are typically ridiculous because, hey, SO.)

1:17 AM
wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of "must log in at least x times" filter too.
not exactly sure how the filter works. i know that i can't always find someone when i'm looking for them by name.

@goldPseudo as I see both content used the same Arabic source book. so it is not amazing that both content look similar. anyway although they are similar but I can not say it is Plagiarism. any similarity is not Plagiarism. specially when both content use the same Arabic source book. similarity can be accidental. it is not right to delete posts before being ensured about Plagiarism.
@BleedingFingers OK, then what does this duckduckgo link prove? there are some search results that contain some of words of the content that is claimed to be Plagiarism. so what? I do not understand how this link prove the content is Plagiarism! please fear God and do not accuse others for Plagiarism before you become ensured. tanzil.net/#49:12 anyway I think your link is not enough to prove it is a Plagiarism.

@BattleofKarbala don't insult me.

the similarity can be accidental. even if it is really Plagiarism but still your evidence is not enough.
@goldPseudo Salam, again accuse of insult. I do not see where is my insult.
I made an advice for you. is it insult?

@goldPseudo do you have some kind of enmity against @BattleofKarbala, Please explain the insult

it was flagged for plagiarism. i checked the post, and confirmed plagiarism.

Where is insult?

5:36 AM
@goldPseudo OK where is my insult?

your insult is assuming i'm too stupid to do my job.

you are not God. you are a human and human possibly can have error.

call

@goldPseudo No I do not assume you are stupid. instead I really think you are clever. but I consider the possibility of an unintentional error in deleting the answer.
you have misinterpreted my advice.

you are assuming i can't tell the difference between plagiarism and accidental use of similar words.
yes, maybe it was accidental.
i made a judgement.
that's my job.
if you don't like that, fine. bring it up on meta.
don't just sit here and treat me as if i don't know how to read.

5:39 AM
NO. the only thing I assume is the possibility of an unintentional error
you did your job right.
you judged
but any judge can have error

so?

unless he is infallible

so i shouldn't do anything because i might make a mistake?

so I have an advice for reconsidering it and rechecking it

how long did i spend considering and checking it in the first place?
do you have any clue?

5:41 AM
I do not know

then why do you assume i didn't spend long enough?

perhaps 30 min

just because my judgement disagreed with yours?

no dear brother

if i'm wrong, God will judge. what does it matter if you decide i might've made a mistake?

5:41 AM
not just because my judgement disagreed with me.

why do you judge me?

but because there is not enough evidence for Plagiarism
I did not judge you
I am not sure I am right

then why do you assume i am wrong?

I only considered a possiblity
I did not assume
possibility is different of assuming certainly.
perhaps I am wrong
I ask for a review and recheck

in other words, you ask me to waste my time.

5:44 AM
considering I have not seen any evidence that prove it is Plagiarism

it's not my responsibility to prove anything to you.

this is commiunity

no, this is chat.
you want to bring it up to the community, take it to meta.

I mean this site is a commiunity
what you consider it waste of time is needed for commiunity
are you sure the user has committed Plagiarism?

yes.
i made a judgement.

5:45 AM
only because of some words are similar?
No problem
you did your job well

if you want a judge who is 100% infallible, this is not the site to find them.

so I want to ask another mod recheck it

why?
why don't you prove your own case?
instead of wasting moderators time?
you're the one claiming it's not plagiarism.

because I think possibly your judgement is wrong
in fact I proved here in chat
my prove is that there is no evidence for it being Plagiarism

despite the fact that links were provided and two people decided it was plagiarism.

5:48 AM
partial similarity of two content specially when they have the same Arabic book source is not enough evidence for Plagiarism.

make your case, bring it to meta. don't play games in chat.

this is my proof.
Also who claims a text is Plagiarism should prove it. not who reject this claim.
if you claim I am a thief. who should prove it?
I should prove I am not thief? or you should prove I am thief?

i'm done with this conversation.

thanks for your time
also I am not playing any game

I was banned by @goldPseudo so could not participate
I dont think one has to beg a moderator that he did not intend to insult him/her
The best way IMO to address these issues is to post a question on meta and a moderator who took the action answers it
that we we see who is right and who is wrong
if that does not solve the problem entirely, sure one can chat here and discuss

8:44 AM
huh. looks like the Hilali-Khan translation of the Qur'an isn't perfectly static.
my dead tree copy has one ayah translated completely differently from the text on quran.com
wonder which one's newer.

goldPseudoIn my dead tree copy (Sixteenth Revised Edition, Darussalam Publishing 1997) of Hilali-Khan's Noble Qur'an, 41:24 is translated as follows: Then, if they bear the torment patiently, then the Fire is the home for them, and if they seek to please Allâh, yet they are not of those who will ever b...

@goldPseudo was I banned automatically or was done by you?

9:20 AM
@muslim1 i flagged you for being rude.

2 hours later…
11:45 AM
so that would automatically ban me for one hour.
However you were very adamant that you were insulted by @BattleofKarbala
I think that was rude too when put blame on a user for nothing?
or may be take things to personnel?
Moderator is not an easy job and may be not for every one
@goldPseudo you have to be professional and to the point
even if you mean to ask, "Are you insulting me", you have to show some degree of politeness
why do you think you feel insulted
you put the burden on the other person to figure how he/she have insulted you they may have not any clue
may be it has to do with high @Moderator status :)

@muslim1 If you have a problem with the way me or anyone else is handling his moderator duties, bring it up on meta where it belongs. If you are unwilling or unable to treat others (including moderators) with respect while you're in the chat room, I will not hesitate to flag you again.
I have no interest in coming to this room just to be expected to defend myself or my actions. Chat is not a place for bickering.

4:48 PM
I thought about it after reading the forgoing chat logs, whether I should be giving a response to any of the claims and assumptions which I happened to (dis)agree with. And I choose not to. Reason: I'll end-up wasting my time.
@BattleofKarbala I'll ask you a simple question. Were you to determine if something was plagiarised, how would you do that? What percentage of similarity between the content under question and similar text found elsewhere would be enough for you to deem it as plagiarised?
@goldPseudo Don't mean to judge your actions or something. But I think you could be bit more patient. I know sometimes it could get tiring and frustrating, but I strongly believe that patiently dealing with these matters and explaining stuff out is more fruitful and builds trust and retention.
But that's just me. I don't mean to undermine the extent to which you have shown patience. I only took this recent log as a sample.

5:14 PM
@BleedingFingers I try to be patient, but nobody appreciates coming into chat just to be attacked.
We have an entire meta forum that's explicitly designed to allow such issues to be settled by the community.
We have enough problems with sectarianism on this site, we don't need people throwing accusations and insults around.

5:27 PM
@goldPseudo that's the way to go. To answer question on Meta. But I have seen none of the moderators answers any of the question, when the post says, why this question was deleted etc
Since moderator is responsible for deleting these posts, they are responsible to provide any explanation they might have.
Just by saying, 'you are wasting my time', 'I dont have time' in chat rooms does not solve the problem and is generally 'impolite'
as for putting the blame on me that I disrepected someone, 'Who did I disrespect?'
I am not the type of guy first of all who would say something wrong to any one
I really believe we should constructively develop this site but I have question on how some of the answers and question were deleted.
I am not saying, I am right. I could be wrong. What I can do on my part is post question on meta but moderators aren't really interested in answering those question and are more interested in their 'honor'. That approach sadly does not work on SE sites.

5:56 PM
@muslim1 Bring it up on meta.
I have no interest in discussion this matter with you if you can't even be bothered to discuss it with the community.
And neither me nor any of the other moderators are under any obligation to respond to every post. It's your responsibility to make sure the question is something that people actually want to answer.

Q: Please read carefully before approving or rejecting edit suggestions?

Bleeding FingersI've recently come across approved edit suggestion (e.g. this and this) which either don't improve the post or actually changed it's meaning altogether. So please be careful with the edits you approve. One is not bound to approve or reject if unsure. You can always skip and let others decide but...

The tag needs some serious cleanup.
According to my own tag scores, I'm apparently an expert in "quran" which is very much not true.

people seem to tag everything with that tag

A lot of people are apparently still using it as a catch-all.
I'm going through my own answered questions and removing it from posts that shouldn't have it.
(a lot of them look to be better tagged as )
i want my tag scores to reflect what little actual expertise I have :)

:)

also not sure how useful the tag is in and of itself. feels a bit meta to me.
given how many different schools of thought there are in Sunni jurisprudence.
are there any actual experts in "Sunni"? would anyone actually care to search for questions about as compared to, say, or etc?
that might need to be a meta discussion.
fixing these tags gradually. don't really want to flood the front page with old bumped posts.

@goldPseudo yeah

9:26 PM
and may be merge-worthy. would need to investigate to see if there's any practical difference between them.
i think both of them are just generally used for fatwa questions.

I am unsure of the purpose of the tag, and if we really need it. not sure if that was discussed on the meta

i brought it up back in the day.

perhaps a merge?

we still have ? i thought we burnt that ages ago.

Q: Why do we need a "muslim" tag?

goldPseudoTitle says it all: We have a muslim tag, but I can't fathom any constructive use for it; might as well just add islam to everything while we're at it (don't do that). What possible use does this have? Should it just be burninated?

Q: What is the "shia-sunni" tag for? Do we even need it?

goldPseudoCurrently, we have a shia-sunni tag (16th most popular on the site), but it's not very clear what this tag is for, or why we would need it. The tag wiki simply explains what the Shi'a and the Sunni are, but it doesn't explain anything about the use-case of such a tag. We already have tags for s...

i reckon there's a valid use case for for those issues that are explicitly a point of contention between Shi'a and Sunni beliefs.
given how many people actually want to ask questions about that, and how many people really don't care to deal with it at all, having the tag makes sense so people can choose to ignore those questions.
(it's one of my two ignored tags, the other being .)

I think it might be best renaming it, people seem to tag it with , also I see people use for similar purposes.
I see many tags that need to be dealt with. for example and .
if I recall, wasn't there a "source request" tag or did we always have the tag?

9:39 PM
there used to be a confusion between and .
i prefer to use source-identification myself. reference-request had an issue with people just tacking it on to things as "I need references for this answer".
source identification is more clearly "I need information on this particular source"

ok, i see

huh. i thought was birthed on meta. turns out it was in chat.

people seem to just tack it on as a catch-all.

and on a completely unrelated note, the Community Bulletin holds featured M.SE posts now too. cool.
(doesn't seem to hold hot M.SE posts though, unless M.SE has a much higher threshold of "hotness" than I expect)

"What is the best Arabic joke ever?"
a great example question of what won't be wanted on the Arabic site Insha'Allah when it goes beta, and Alhamdulillah such a question won't be asked on here unless if it was intended to be a joke or someone did not read the site title

I'm surprised the Arabic site is still so far from commitment.
actually, is this a new proposal now? did the original get abandoned?
looks like it. i know i'd asked some sample questions on the first proposal, but they're not there.

@goldPseudo I forgot the reason the original got closed, but yes this is a new one

proposals will get automatically deleted if they have no activity for a month.
not sure if that's what happened to Arabic
welp, i'm following the new one now.
interesting. the Area51 "close question" dialog is still using the old close reasons (NaRQ, NC, etc).
i thought they would've updated at least those by now.
there. have a new example question. :)
(even if i already know the answer)

I just heard Newton made a tafseer of Surat al-ikhlas
I wonder if that can be verified
By tafseer, I mean commentary

Newton?

yes :)

@yasar11732 who is this Newton?

It is kind of founder of modern physics

ok I know him, and I see you are referring to him now, I was trying to make sure

11:10 PM
Yes, I watch him like every day :)

@yasar11732 if this is so, it would be interesting

Even if such thing existed, I would think it would be hard to reach it
I guess it would be in someone's private collection or something
