When I say I laughed a bit, that was after I'd spent half an hour calming down my helpline forum, convincing everybody it was actually a false positive & being part of the queue that finally crashed Eset's live chat… after all that, I laughed a bit...

I have a technical question about the whole iPhone/FBI stuff going on right now, and I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask it. Basically, I'm curious why any solution to "break into this phone" would have to involve creating a software back door, rather than fabricating a piece of hardware to copy bits from the storage medium.

I would be wary of asking conversation questions about what the FBI or Apple is or might do. They aren't the sort of practical questions an end user might face. It might get closed or it might be find based on the wording and the research you did to explain how an answer will draw from Apple's documented design or expert use of iOS.

Have you looked at the security site?
