@NathanGreenstein Where'd you get that from, eh?

@ruddfawcett No idea. Either some AppleScript book or just the intertubes.
Known it for ages

3 hours later…
4:36 AM
'open' is a command line binary.

5:05 AM
@NathanGreenstein (shrugs) I dunno...
@NathanGreenstein I know, but this way seems a little better to me.
And it's cooler :-)

Hi @daviesgeek.

Hey @Mahnax!
What's happenin'?

Oops, didn't mean to shout at you there.

:-)
(Well, I did :-)

@daviesgeek Homework, haha.
You?

5:17 AM
@Mahnax Working on version 1.0.1 of my Ask Different Search application

@daviesgeek Cool! What language is that in/how are you doing it?

@Mahnax Haha! No more homework for me...of course, I still have schoolwork...
@Mahnax AppleScript

@daviesgeek Neat.

The link is posted above somewhere, but I'd recommend you wait until I'm done with this version. I'm almost done...

@daviesgeek Hm, okay.

5:20 AM
Fixing some minor "bugs", particularly the one where I display the text that the user inputted ;-) I forgot to take it out

Fun fun.
I should be working on my homework, so I'm vacating the premises.
Have a nice evening.

And adding a Quit button...
@Mahnax Ok, you too
@Mahnax I shall send you the link when I'm done

@daviesgeek Okay, thanks.

@DanielLawson Hello!

5:24 AM
And how are you?

Not too shabby. I'm enjoying the week between semesters. And yourself?

@DanielLawson School is over and I'm enjoying my "freedom" (which consists of housework and more school)

sure
That's the way life works, no?

Yup. Sure does...

But some scheduled responsibilities ending can make a big difference.

5:26 AM
Darn. Looks like I have to completely rewrite the search and replace function in my AppleScript. :-(

Isn't that the core of your application?
(if it's a search application…)

@DanielLawson No.
Have you tried it yet?

no
what does it do?
(I generally avoid running random code without some idea why I'm doing it)

Right here

Note that I didn't ask where to get it, but what it does…

5:28 AM
Oh. It is a simple application that allows you to type in a string and it will open up a search page for Ask Different. Somewhat useless, but fun, nonetheless
@DanielLawson I know. I hit "Enter" about when you posted that

sorry

More me than you...

I'm still relatively new to chat.
Not a medium I've used much.

Yah. For me, I use chat a fair amount for work. I don't go to work usually, so I chat my boss.
However, I'd say that I'm still pretty new to chatting too...I've only started within the past year and a half

well, that's a bigger fraction of your life than mine :-)

5:31 AM
True...

I think I'm more than twice your age.

@DanielLawson Yup, you are

but less than 3x

Yes.

See, I can do basic math.
How were your finals?

5:32 AM
@DanielLawson Good.

The best thing about finals is when they're over.

I was one of 3 (out of 8) people that actually wrote the paper. Of the two papers, mine was longer.

Longer ≠ better, but sometimes they go together.

Yes, though I daresay mine was probably better.

What was the subject?

5:34 AM
Apr 25 at 21:54, by daviesgeek
So...this year's final consists of an 1100-1600 word paper on two periods in Western Culture and 2 artists, 1 author, 2 composers, and one historical event from each, as well as a short quiz in Spanish

What did you write about?

Ooh, boy, you're making me think (kidding)
I wrote about the Classical and Romantic periods

Cool.

Charles Peale, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig von Beethoven, Jane Austen, and the War of 1812
= Classical period

I had to look up Charles Peale, but the others I'm quite familiar with.

5:37 AM
Thomas Cole, Antonín Dvorák, Johannes Brahms, Charlotte Brontë, and the American Civil War
= Romantic period

Well, I know which period I prefer, hands down.

@DanielLawson Yeah, he is a little lesser known

But I'd take J. S. Bach over any of them.
Baroque FTW

Ah. I chose the Classical and Romantic periods not necessarily because I liked them more, but there were more people from each of the periods. Mom required a certain number (as you saw) from each period

So your mother wrote the exam?
Who were the other 7 people taking it, then?

5:40 AM
@DanielLawson No, my tutor (sorta like my teacher, but under my Mom) did

oh. ok.

@DanielLawson The other people in my class. Although I am homeschooled, I go to school once a week and get assignments. Sorta like a charter school, except Mom is in charge, not the teacher at school

It's getting pretty late here in Eastern time. I think I'll shut down soon. Enjoy finals being done!

@DanielLawson Ok. Have a good rest of the night. Thanks!

6:25 AM
Ok, version 1.0.1 of my Ask Different Search app is done. Download it here.
@Mahnax ^

Booya, hits 8k on AD :)

Lock-in indeed...

That pissed me off. ;)

Yeah, particularly poor use of apple baiting :)

The software, working as designed, doesn't let me do anything I want it to do.* Damn that Apple and their lock-in!

My car won't let me refuel without stopping, damn Kia and their no refuelling while driving policy!

You need to edit your comment. "could" > "couldn't" stop using…
Could not works too. Did you edit or did I misread (twice) the first time?

1:56 PM
No edit
:)
I would never go back and edit anything, I live and die by my words ;)

My bad. Must have glasses here somewhere…

I don't think that Aperture was ever quite so professional as say Final Cut Pro, or Logic Pro

Now I just need a screen shot. Maybe a peek inside the library bundle?
You weren't around for the early years. I attended Apple events keyed at the pro market.

It doesn't have the Pro in the name, which the others do despite the fact that there is no non-pro version available etc.

I received training, along with a number of working pros, at Apple's Boston (or New York–forget the year) market center.

2:03 PM
And it does seem squarely set as "better iPhoto", where you won't see Logic ever described as "for Garageband users who want to get more out of their music"

Final Cut didn't become FCP until the prosumer version shipped. Same for Logic.

I see it as a middle tier solution, where Apple does not have a fully Pro solution in place for photos
So maybe we are due an Aperture Pro in the future, but for now it's perhaps where FC and L were before they went Pro.

As I said, I attribute that more towards marketing nuance, and perhaps future direction, than design intent. There are a lot of pros living and dying by Aperture.

Not being a photographer, not even of amateur status, I am only going by the general vibe I get of the products

I'm actually a "pro" in that field by the strictest definition–but I don't support myself doing it so I don't label myself as such.
In other news, I'm called dude by a stranger

A: Photo gallery app with time stamps

jabergPhotoCal and PhotoHistory both allow you to browse photos by date. PhotoCal will also scan your Photostream.

2:09 PM
FCP and LP have themselves has huge price cuts, but they still sit where Apperture used to be before it's price cut. Maybe it is positioning, but I could take a punt on Aperture and not be too mad if I hate it. I can't do that for FCP or LP, those remain serious investments for home users at least
Nice one, Dude.

Regardless, it isn't designed for collaboration. It's a single-workstation solution.

On that, we can absolutely agree.

2:51 PM
Everything is improved by screenshots. Come on 5K!

A: What is a method for sharing an Aperture library?

jabergPut the library file in a folder that is accessible to other computers and set permissions so that it can be accessed/edited by other users. You also need to be certain that only one person is editing the file at any given time – the software isn't designed as a shared database and I don't know w...

3:41 PM
Shame we can't embed videos, that's my 2nd youtube answer.

:)
Whoops. I'm losing my mind. I already made that link!
And now I curse that down vote I cast…

Which?

Whatever I cast last. I'm at 4999 rep. ;)

ha!

That's a nice video, but I would'a incorporated a cute kid. ;)

3:56 PM
There you go.

Plus I've had two Q's for which answers were accepted while I was creating my own. I hate that. Give it an hour. ;)
LOL! now I can get to work!
Finally I can delve into the Tag Wikis and provide damage control for @daviesgeek's excesses. ;)

4:14 PM
@jaberg :-P
@jaberg I hate that!
@stuffe Please upvote this then.

Q: Can we implement Youtube video embedding on Ask Different?

daviesgeekI am trying to embed a Youtube video into my answer, but I can't seem to get it to work. I've seen it embedded on other sites (see this answer). Can the ability to embed Youtube videos be added to Ask Different?

@jaberg Congrats on 5K!!!
Man, I just don't get it...everyone besides me is racking up rep and I'm left in the dust...:-(

@daviesgeek Already did

Oh. Good
But unfortunately, there are only 2 upvotes :-(
@jaberg Hey! Have you seen my edits?!?!? (sorry, I kinda just got that…sooo tired…)

4:31 PM
@daviesgeek I know it was just an idea. I try to take suggestions seriously, so I wanted to revisit this when you mentioned it in chat.

@DanielLawson Ok. Understood
I still think there's a place for it, maybe not necessarily in my answer, but it does have a place somewhere

Your answer, btw, was what convinced me -- it's harder to summarize a linked video than to embed it, but your summary was outstanding, and much better content than if you'd just said "watch the movie"

@DanielLawson Ok. Good

It forces people to work harder, but they make more useful (and more searchable) answers.

Very true. You may be changing my mind...
Do all the moderators get Jedi training?
@stuffe Very nice solution here
And now I see what you mean...though @DanielLawson's working on changing my mind...

4:41 PM
You've lost me what you 2 are actually talking about
Right, I have to haul mouldy carpet into a skip. How's your day ;)

Regarding the imbedded videos debate, @DanielLawson speaks for me until further notice.
@stuffe Mould -y carpet? Does it runneth over with Hüsker Dü?

5:53 PM
I have no idea what you mean, but I rejoice in my local spelling.

6:21 PM
@daviesgeek Thank you very much, I ended up purchasing one of the paid apps. If nothing else, it's an awesome tool for selection screenshots from the iPad without having to screenshot, edit, and transfer...

6:33 PM
Absolutely!

3 hours later…
9:25 PM
@daviesgeek for me it was one or three really key answers that drove my rep up. And the iPad contest...

9:53 PM
@IanC Wow! Yeah. I see that...

2 hours later…
11:45 PM
@daviesgeek Concentrate on what's important.
