12:15 AM
there's a lego star wars cartoon?
do the legos' actually talk?

1:04 AM
@stuffe Great!tell you 'bout it later...

4 hours later…
5:10 AM
@stuffe We went to my teacher's house and had our "final," which consisted of filling out a timeline of dates, people, and inventions from the 6th to 21st centuries. Then, we just parties and watched a movie (Arsenic and Old Lace). It was a blast!

Hello anybody.

@Mahnax Hey!

@daviesgeek gasps A response? At this ungoshly hour?
How's things?

@Mahnax Yah. I know. I need to go to bed :-)

@daviesgeek Ahaha, I'll be studying for the next hour or so. Silly work and school interfering with each other. Why can't it all be synced?

5:15 AM
Hehe...that'd be nice

Hmm, I could get tickets to Van Halen.

@Mahnax Today was finals day

@daviesgeek Oh, did that go well for you?

@Mahnax Ooh. Though I don't really listen to him, what I've heard is good.

@daviesgeek Yeah, pretty good band. My dad would enjoy them too.
Lots of seats left… Hmm.

5:16 AM
@Mahnax I don't think I can really fail my finals...

@daviesgeek …because your mom is marking them?

No, just because it was a paper, and I am 100% sure I didn't fail that.
OK. 99% sure

Well, fair enough.
What subject/topic?
And Bryan Adams this summer too! Oh boy.

I'm not sure it's possible for me to fail it...I've never had finals until just recently, so I don't know much about them :-)
@Mahnax One moment....
Apr 25 at 21:54, by daviesgeek
So...this year's final consists of an 1100-1600 word paper on two periods in Western Culture and 2 artists, 1 author, 2 composers, and one historical event from each, as well as a short quiz in Spanish
Oh. Scratch the part about Spanish. We didn't do that. :-)

@daviesgeek You've been home schooled for your whole life?

5:19 AM
Yup.

Hm, would you ever consider going to public school?

Since kindergarten all the way through to this year.
@Mahnax No. And here's why: Why "waste" your time going to public school when I can be here at home, get my work done much faster, and get college stuff done too?
To give you an example, my friend graduated from high school with an AA in business administration and will be graduating college with a BA in criminal justice this fall at the age of 19 (maybe 20)
@JasonSalaz How are you?

@daviesgeek My response: Why spend your time alone at home when you can go to a school with more optional courses, better equipment, trained teachers (I'm not sure if your mom/dad/homeschool teacher is trained as a teacher), and the same ability to complete college stuff early, plus friends?

@Mahnax Ok, very true, but I teach myself almost everything, so I can pace myself (obviously from a book) and I have waay more time than the average public school kid.
In the response of better equipment, I can't complain about what I have, though I can't think of what you have that I don't (I'm sure you'll find something)
Oh, biology labs. But I was able to do them this year

@daviesgeek Let's start with something basic and work our way up. 400x magnification microscopes and over 50 different types of slides to view?

5:26 AM
Youtube?

Not the same IMO.
Don't get to view the slides and draw them in person.

Yeah. I know. I love studying it, but when will I use it?

How about access to pig hearts/foetuses, as well as frogs and lamb brains for dissections?
@daviesgeek If you are a lab tech, often.
Hundreds of chemicals and a trained lab tech to make urine for you?

Right, but I'm not going to be a lab tech. :-P

(actually happened today, we did a urine analysis lab).
How about a full industrial kitchen?
Complete with deli slicers, meat grinders, and deep fryers.
rests case

5:31 AM
@Mahnax No...
(sorry, answering email)

@daviesgeek It's okay, I was watching a trailer for The Dark Knight Rises.

:-)

@daviesgeek You can do a proper ellipsis with alt + ;.
My school actually has two kitchens.
The industrial one for commercial foods and the cafeteria, and the bake shop kitchen.

…I know, but it doesn't always show up right

OK good. I figured that you, of all people, should know that.

5:33 AM
Yah. I just got used to typing "..." rather than "…"

My fingers remember … now.

Looks almost the same

Almost is not good enough for this pedantic Mahnax.

:-)

Haha.
Are you looking forward to any movies that come out this year?

5:34 AM
@Mahnax Yah. Believe me that's me and grammar/spelling
@Mahnax I don't really watch movies.

@daviesgeek Nor do I, but there are two that I would really like to see this year.

Feb 3 at 5:34, by daviesgeek
I am most definitely not up to date on movies/tv shows, etc.

The Dark Knight Rises is the new Batman movie, coming out in July[?]. And The Hobbit is coming out in December.

I watch Hawaii Five-0, NCIS, NCIS: LA and that's all
@Mahnax Ooh, The Hobbit! But I haven't seen the others! :-(

Oh, I don't watch any TV these days.
@daviesgeek Finish them!
Do you have them at home?

5:37 AM
Technically, I don't watch TV, I watch online TV
@Mahnax Nope

@daviesgeek I should mail them to you.

I know friends who I can borrow them from

Good, I would never mail my preciouses away.

The problem is finding time when little sibling aren't around. Which is never
Since I'm the oldest, it's a bit hard to do stuff like that.

I understand. You can't just send them away from the TV?

5:39 AM
Grrr...gotta love Error 500 codes

@Mahnax I saw that and didn't respond, but I will now: "haha!" (I've read the books)

I just want an excuse to post that picture.

@Mahnax Not really…doesn't work that way…

@daviesgeek Oh, why?
Do you live in a one-bedroom shack?
Or is it a matter of parents saying "You are not the boss of your siblings."?

5:42 AM
We do more family oriented stuff. I would feel a bit guilty sitting there watching TV all by myself. Besides, I know my Dad and younger brother (right under me) would enjoy it too.

@daviesgeek Hmm, that's a good reason, I suppose.
Would your younger brother be allowed to watch it?

@Mahnax Yes.

@daviesgeek Hm, but there is a sibling who is younger still?

Yes. All the way down to an 8 month old
1= Me (16)
2= brother (13)
3= sister (12)
4= brother (10)
5=brother (7)
6=sister (5)
7=brother (2.5)
8=sister (8 months)

Oh, right. Eight kids.
@daviesgeek Laughed at the (9?).

5:45 AM
@Mahnax :-)

Uh… Are your parents, well, done?

@Mahnax Ah ha! Figured it out

Is eight enough?

What ever God wants for our family. I know there'll be at least one more adopted one

Oh, adopting too? Cool.

5:46 AM
#6 is adopted from China

My parents wanted to adopt a girl from China, but the government had suddenly changed the rules and we couldn't.

How many siblings do you have?

@daviesgeek I started writing my previous post before I saw that, heh.

@Mahnax Cool!

@daviesgeek Four, but if things had worked out, I would have six.
One of my brothers died an hour after birth and the China adoption didn't work out.

5:48 AM
@Mahnax 'nother reason: I'm a Christian and don't particularly care for some of the teaching in public school
@Mahnax :-(

@daviesgeek Fair enough, I am as well, and I completely understand that.
Many people have an issue with evolution, for one thing.

@Mahnax You are? Didn't know that. I looked through your accounts and didn't see a Christianity account, but that doesn't mean anything…
@Mahnax Absolutely. I am firmly opposed to it.

@daviesgeek Yeah, I wasn't sure if I wanted to join. I don't think I'd have anything to contribute.

Now that I'm older, of course, I welcome the chance to learn about evolution

@daviesgeek I'm trying to keep an open mind, and as I study the Bible and evolution I want to see if there's any way the two could both be true.

5:50 AM
@Mahnax Yah. I did just to support it, but I have a pretty high rep account now.

For example, the seven "days" could mean any number of things, as the Hebrew word that was translated into days can also mean "a period of time".

@Mahnax I would have to disagree with reconciling Christianity and evolution.

Of course, I can't agree with humans coming from apes.

@Mahnax Don't get me started…

@daviesgeek Sorry, are you disagreeing?

5:52 AM
@Mahnax Yes

@daviesgeek How figurest thou?

10
A: What is the case for interpreting the Genesis creation account literally?

warrenThe short version is that there are many places in the Bible that quote/reference the creation account in the book of Genesis literally (Exodus 16:16, Exodus 20:11, Exodus 31:17, Leviticus 23:3, Deuteronomy 5:13, Luke 13:14, etc). The most obvious is the "reasoning" given for the 4th Commandment...

Not to cut off this conversation that we should continue later, but I really need to go.
It was good talking to you and I shall see ya 'round!

OK, goodbye.

4 hours later…
9:36 AM
@Mahnax Neither is better than any other method, it's what suits everyone involved, some kids need structure that can be provided in a class setting, others need freedom to learn what interests them. So long as the basics are covered, and it's taken seriously you can go to school in a cave for me :)
@daviesgeek Likewise, there are a thousand ways to skin a cat, and whilst I personally find it very interesting and indeed convincing, it's not actually required knowledge like maths reading and writing, so I personally wish that it wasn't dressed up as this big dividing wall that sets people against each other.

Any discussion involving Religion in the classroom is so weird to me.
I don't recall any religion in the classroom. Neither attempted and ... disbanded, nor actively prevented.

10:18 AM
@JasonSalaz We had it, mixed in with general social and moral education stuff. We also did not do evolution at school, that I recall (else it was just not an issue at the time 20+ years ago).
I do feel we are going backwards with regards to curriculum topics these days, which is odd in this progressive world we live in.
We are still increasingly secular over here. France is even more so (too much actually I think).

6 hours later…
4:23 PM
@stuffe I have discussions with people, but I always walk away still their friend. They might not like me, but I continue to be their friend. I enjoy the discussions, but I don't want to destroy a relationship over it.
I welcome the chance to be challenged in my beliefs
@JasonSalaz Christianity used to be in the classroom and everyone was okay with it. There wasn't a problem with praying to start the day, reading Scripture, or having the Ten Commandments posted on the wall.

Says the person who's younger than me and doesn't attend public school...

I have a Dad who I know is older than you.
99% sure he's older than you

I would imagine he is.

Is that your real age on your profile?

yes

4:29 PM
Yeah, he's definitely older than you

But your dad didn't attend any of my schools.
Especially since one didn't even exist yet.
Nor did he live in my state.

True...but he grew up out here in California

Every school is different.

Again, true...
But I have to say that the majority of public schools 30+ years ago taught Christianity in school (prayer, etc. in class)

I would challenge your apparent absolute knowledge, but I really don't care to have this argument here.

4:31 PM
:-)
okay

For something 2 generations before your time no less. Based solely on the word of your parents / those in your community.
And there I go having the argument. WTG Jason :/.

@JasonSalaz Umm...yeah. Is there a problem with that? Can I not trust the word of my parents? :-)
@JasonSalaz :-)

"But I have to say that the majority of public schools 30+ years ago taught Christianity in school (prayer, etc. in class)"
They don't know that. You don't know that.
Making yourself look bigger for the right of your claim is a really absurd thing to do. (And I'm saying that generally, not specifically.)

Ooh. I'm a bit off.
> In 1962, the Court examined a simple twenty-two word prayer, first used to negate prayer in schools:
Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421 (1962), was a landmark United States Supreme Court case that determined that it is unconstitutional for state officials to compose an official school prayer and encourage its recitation in public schools. Background of the case The case was brought by the families of public school students in New Hyde Park, New York who complained that the voluntary prayer to "Almighty God" contradicted their religious beliefs. They were supported by groups opposed to the school prayer including rabbinical organizations, Ethical Culture, and Judaic organizations. The prayer i...

Clearly this article means that every school taught Christianity before then.

4:35 PM
Ok, I was wrong. Not 30+ years ago, but longer than that

And not just a significant chunk in communities of differing religions.

Ok, and doing a little more research, prayer was the first part removed from schools. Christianity wasn't completely removed until later (getting a date)
@JasonSalaz Yes...true

.o0(Didn't I say I wasn't having this argument? Didn't I already I mention my own displeasure for continuing it anyways? WTG +1 Jason)
/me goes back to work.

@JasonSalaz Ok. That's okay.
(you were still having it :-)
@JasonSalaz I GTG too. TTYL!

That was my point. .o0() is a thought bubble. Not to mention the self reference.

4:56 PM
I'd say good morning Daniel, but... yeah :).

Good morning Jason

moving on to more pleasant subjects...

Apple happy news?

(oh, it's afternoon here. oops)
Apple news?
What's afoot?

4:57 PM
I was asking you that

that would be my definition of 'more pleasant subjects'

mine would include just about anything...
well, my wife really likes her iPad.
That's good news.
What's new in Colorado?
Is the telecommuting settling into place?

more or less.
My Thunderbolt display has an issue I've seen before.
If you leave it plugged in (power-wise) at all times, eventually it just starts blinking.

5:00 PM
I had a Dell that used to do this. Among many other obnoxious things.

that doesn't sound good.

Solution? Unplug it overnight, works in the morning.
so annoying that I have to dig out the cord.

yuck
I have to reboot my airport express a few times a week to keep it working.
Your co-workers are all far away... that sounds like a potentially lonely job. But you're still in the same community you were in, so I suppose you know people in town already.

I have 3 co-workers in driveable distance.

but no water cooler

5:02 PM
true
The chat room is pretty water cooler heavy.

I'm just trying to imagine how telecommuting would work. Given how face-to-face my job is, I have a hard time picturing it.
Is there a GitHub chat room?

there are many

that's great

we use campfire to organize discussion, and also just scuttlebutt

what is "campfire"?
and scuttlebutt is just the word scuttlebutt, right, it's not the name of a piece of software?

5:04 PM
chat web app by 37signals

right. scuttlebutt is an old military term for "water cooler" chat.
idle chat and all that

I knew the word, but wanted to be sure it wasn't the name of chat software. It would be a good name for chat software.

indeed

I'm enjoying a slower week between semesters.
But I just discovered my employer signed a license so we can install Adobe CS6 on our home computers. This could be cool.
And helpful in developing graphics to use in class.

5:07 PM
awesome
Though I resolve never to use Adobe products if there are better alternatives.
Photoshop? Yes (Pixelmator). Flash Media Live encoder? No ( :( ).

Yeah. Now I have to learn how to use it. And the license doesn't start until next Monday.
I'm happy to use Photoshop if it's around. Illustrator compares well to the other vector programs I've used.
I hate Acrobat with a passion.

@DanielLawson @JasonSalaz I work remote -- we all do at Cycle Computing -- it can get weird, but you deal with it. And you really get efficient when you do get together.

Cycle Computing? You make computers powered by bikes?
[/nerd]

@JasonSalaz not quite. I make supercomputers.

powered by bikes?
That can only be operated if the sweat of the innocent is flowing like a river?

@JasonSalaz exactly. Keeps you trim. Crunches big numbers.

I would buy a computer I could recharge by biking
a supercomputer? probably not rich enough for that yet.

6:55 PM

"Affordable" is relative ;)

@JasonSalaz true enough. :)

interesting read though
by which I mean interesting skim

I'm actually in Madison, WI for the week if there are any AD folk here...want to grab a beer...

7:11 PM
If I were in Madison, WI, I'd take you up on that, but alas, I'm in Detroit, MI, so no deal.

but the letters are so close together, doesn't that also mean the locations are too?
huh, when did stackexchange.com/sites change?
I love how prominents ask different is :D

7:46 PM
@daviesgeek Indeed, it takes all types. If everybody looked the same we'd get bored of looking at each other.
When it comes to matters of ingrained and irreconcilable differences, I like to remember that even with those things, there's still more you have in common even with complete strangers than you have differences.

@JasonSalaz MI and WI are the same place if you stand on your head and look in a mirror.

@daviesgeek Check this podcast out - only 4 minutes and you can play without subscribing.

8:10 PM
@DanielLawson all I ever see of Detroit is the inside of your airport. Which, I'll say, is lovely.

If you can't play a podcast without subscribing, the author is a loser.

@JasonSalaz that is so cool. Both visually and because AD is quite a decent presence on that visualization.

wait what?
OH
didn't follow the reply :). Yeah, that's crazy awesome.

@IanC Much lovelier now that it used to be, especially if you're in the new terminal.
@IanC Minus the actual words "Ask Different". But you can't win 'em all.

@DanielLawson yea, all my connecting flights are usually out of the new terminal.

8:28 PM
We've been fighting that battle for so long now :<.

8:41 PM
@JasonSalaz Quite awhile ago
@stuffe Absolutely agree!!
@stuffe I will when I have time.

2 hours later…
10:12 PM
@stuffe Great episode and I agree with it
@JasonSalaz YES!
