1:21 AM
So @gentmatt now I'm running the beta of Google Chrome and it is just fine. I am at a loss as to what is happening.
I am, however, going to see if I can convince my Dad to let me upgrade this machine to Lion.

1 hour later…
2:35 AM
@daviesgeek For whatever it's worth, and it's likely not much, the only machine I have running Lion is one on which it came preinstalled. It's nice enough, and I like the scroll direction, but I've got both of the other computers in the house running Leopard (of the non-snow variety) and I see no reason to change that.

2:51 AM
@Daniel I want to be able to use iMessage and iBooks author
Or rather, try out iBooks Author

Ah. Yes.

And, I also don't want to be behind 2 versions of OS X......
When ML releases, of course.

Sure. I just recently abandoned Panther, so I guess I'm not so sensitive to that. :-)

Another benefit is being able to actually answer questions on AD.

That too.

2:53 AM
@Daniel Yeah, I am still using Leopard on one of our machines.

If my only machine were running Panther, that would limit my ability to be of help here.

However, I just noticed all my answers on the tag "Lion"

Which means you have no reservations about answering questions where you have no idea what you're talking about :-)

Look at the # of those that are accepted. I am actually quite surprised.
@Daniel Right

Clearly you're doing something right if people keep accepting your answers.

@daviesgeek If you don't have the requisite software/hardware, you shouldn't ask for clarification, (see onebox below):
@Daniel Right
12 of my answers were accepted
I am really surprised.
Hey @jaberg do you do websites? As, do you code them?

@daviesgeek Not really. I use SquareSpace when I can, Freeway when I must, and generally prefer to author within an existing blog structure.
@daviesgeek I could probably still produce something in HTML, but it would take me a really, really long time.

3:28 AM
Just curious...
I didn't know that he ^ was on AD!
And he was here 13 hours ago....

yeah, he's awesome
Hypercritical is hands down my favorite show, and I love is Mac OS reviews - I've been reading them for years before I knew of him

@KyleCronin Can you create synonym ->

so it's doubly awesome that he's on our site

@KyleCronin Yeah.
Listening to Hypercritical right now...
#53
Thanks for your "recommendation".

@daviesgeek I could, but I think that airplay mirroring is a large enough feature and distinct from generic airplay that it probably warrants its own tag

3:36 AM
You've mentioned it several times on the podcast, so I decided to listen to it.
@KyleCronin Ok...

@daviesgeek well, feel free to raise the question on meta, and if there's a consensus that the tag needs a synonym it can be added
but I'm not convinced enough to act unilaterally at this time

I'm not going to if you don't think it warrants a synonym.

3:53 AM
@KyleCronin I also forgot to mention that I did not rewrite that blog post.
My computer was going nuts, so I didn't have a chance

that's OK, I don't need it immediately
it's better to take your time and do it right

Yeah, definitely

5 hours later…
8:41 AM
Gatekeeper in ML. Adium "may damage your computer". "You should move it to the trash."
Wow. That's a pretty radical warning..
Why not simply write: "Unknown source. Use on your own risk."
@daviesgeek How stable is Chrome Beta? I've never used it before. Any unexpected behavior during normal use?
@daviesgeek You run chrome on an i5, right? My older computer has a 2.2 GHZ C2D. I run's hot very fast. Youtube, flash-heavy websites, Sophos Scan....
@stuffe How is ML Beta so far? I am especially interested about the rendering of basic animations. What computer do you test ML on?

9:03 AM
*at your own risk
I believe i should disable autocorrect. It returns crazy results because I write in different languages...

1 hour later…
10:33 AM
Anyone, please write something @GrahamPerrin to check whether that form of addressing generates the required alert
/me intentionally leaves the room to test

10:45 AM
@GrahamPerrin DON'T PANIC!

11:21 AM
once more, please; I didn't notice the badge when I returned …

12:08 PM
@GrahamPerrin Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges.

12:30 PM
@jaberg Don't say that, or you'll undermine the whole basis of motivating people to participate in Stack Exchange!

@Daniel Did I ever tell you the story about my accelerated departure from the Boy Scouts? ;)
I am motivated to participate by my bodhisattva nature.

1 hour later…
1:51 PM
@gentmatt I do hope they tone that language down a bit before the final release but it's hard to set the correct tone for a varied audience—expert to novice—in a file requester. Too much detail and it gets glossed over.
Doh. Meant dialog box, not file requester. Too late to edit.

1 hour later…
3:17 PM
Hey there @GrahamPerrin - how is this winter treating you?
Also - paging @daviesgeek when you have a moment - I need to run some editing ideas past you.

3:32 PM
@gentmatt It's quite simple. The target market for people that get this warning needs the warning to be strong. People that understand code signing (or have heard it) or intentionally have downloaded software will be more inclined to dig - but when the code executes out of the blue while surfing the web - this is the correct handling IMO.

4:19 PM
@bmike In the latest Hypercritical podcast John Siracusa makes the argument (with which I largely agree) that the language is strong, but software from any developer who goes through the certificate process won't trigger this. It's a stick to drive developers to register and take responsibility for their wares. Don't want your customers to see this? Register for a certificate. Want to be a Rogue? We're not stopping you, but there are consequences.

@jaberg Indeed - I'd love to see something stronger in the betas as a bigger stick to developers. Something like trogdor the burninator, but of course, that's probably not so good for real, shipping software from a mature company.

The only real objection I have to the warning is the should drag it to the trash admonishment. However toning down the instruction—presumably targeted at a non-sophisticated user—would be mealy mouthed. I can accept the case that if you're knowledgeable enough to be running in open mode, you should know enough to take the warning in context.

@jaberg I look at that text from the frame of the following user: my neighbor's 80 year old great aunt that thinks "email" is the Firefox Icon where you type yahoo in the google bar. It's for someone who won't know to click the ? to know more, it's for someone that won't know to even come to the internet to learn.

(Listening to The Talk Show 79. Gruber and Siracusa double teaming. Mac-Analysis Geek nirvana.)

4:35 PM
Anything less startling will be ignored by well over 50% of the user population. It needs to be that strong not because people are not smart - but because it's IMO the right path for any code that the developer doesn't care to sign by the time this OS hits the streets. In the same breath, I can see how users of homebrew and other tools will be rightly perturbed they have to deal with these messages in the mean time.

@bmike Exactly. And I would accept the argument that that user should stick to software from "certified" developers.
@bmike Users of homebrew tend to be perturbed as a state of being. ;)
Six key stroke guy came back. For what it's worth, he's not a troll.

4:56 PM
@bmike I'm here.

Q: Reinstall Office 2011 without dmg?

simpaticoI currently run Lion with Office 2011 and need to re-install Lion after wiping out my HD. I however no longer have the DVD with which I installed Office. How shall I go about re-installing it again having no access to the DVD anymore?

It could be a legitimate question I suppose, but I have my suspicions.

@gentmatt There aren't any differences. However, beware. If you use Chrome Beta and decide to go back to the stable release, your profile info won't work with the older version. Backup your profile before upgrading.
@gentmatt And yes, I am running an i5. I am surprised that Chrome is running that hot on a C2D. My boss runs it on his C2D just fine.
@jaberg Yeah, it does look a bit suspicious.
I am finally upgrading to Lion!
I convinced Dad to let me.
Any suggestions before I begin the upgrade process?
I am also only going to only install one user at a time.....

Make a backup. Make certain you don't have any Rosetta dependencies.

did that.

Should be good to go. I just did the upgrade in place when I did it--no need to wipe user accounts.

5:04 PM
i am going to do a fresh install and restore none of the old data at first.

It's your time.

then i'm going to create one user, and move only documents and such.
I'm trying to diagnose a slow computer
Will there be any problems with that?
Can I just restore /Library and not ~/Library for all the users?
I can't recall what the Migration Assistant does....

Seems a radical approach to the problem, but whatever works for you. I did have to do a wipe/install for a client recently. He'd installed Mac Defender (or another of those "maintenance/monitor programs) and all the cruft it installed brought his system to a standstill.

Yeah, I'm thinking that there are leftovers from our old G5 and maybe the G4 on this computer that are causing problems.
I have Classic apps on this computer.
That was from 2 computers ago!

Migration assistant can be used to bring in Applications or User Accounts, an as I recall (it's been awhile) you can do users on an individual basis.

5:08 PM
Cool!

Most the of the contents of ~/Library are dormant. They don't anything unless called.

A: How can I send an iMessage from a different Apple ID than the one the device is registered to?

jabergiOS devices allow you to use different Apple IDs for different purposes. You can set the Apple ID to be associated with Messages in Settings > Messages.

Yet another lesson learned from Mr. Berg. :-)

But, before you take the radical step, have you done the obvious stuff like look for font conflicts?

@jaberg ok
@jaberg No, I actually didn't think of that.
I probably should do that.

Font Utility.

5:09 PM
Utility or Book?

There's nothing wrong with the approach you're taking…
Book I guess it is now.
…but you could go through the entire process and still wind up with a slow computer.

Yeah...
What do you suggest instead?

Nuke and Pave is a radical procedure. It works, and I've used it, but it's generally overkill.
Plus, you don't learn anything.

Ok...

@daviesgeek Excellent

5:11 PM
(On the other hand, from a business standpoint I'll wipe and restore from a good backup in a heartbeat—generally the best option for business is to get them back up and running as efficiently as possible)

But sometimes the problem recurs, so it really helps to have an idea of what caused it. Like most things, you have to approach it with balance.

So you're saying just install and restore all the data.

I'm not saying anything because I don't have eyes on your machine. I'm giving you information to use to analyze the situation and make your own choice.
I'd start by cleaning up fonts, turning off all unnecessary background daemons, etc.

fonts: how do I do that?
I forgot how to.

5:14 PM
I might even clear caches, fix permissions (which probably won't do anything), etc.
Open FontBook

did that
;-)

Turn off everything but Helvetica, Consola, and fonts from House Industrys and ComicCraft.
;)
Just kidding, sort of. Go through and deactivate anything that you're never going to use.
There's also a menu tool to look for duplicates. Use it and resolve them.

I did that just now.

(I should add that the font slowdowns generally show up in Microsoft Office and other software that builds a custom font menu.)
That's pretty much it unless you suspect a given font is bad--in which case you can validate it. I'm not suggesting radical stuff, just hitting the high points.

5:18 PM
If you login as an alternative user is your system still slow?

Sort of...
I was trying to DL a DB on another user and it still crashed the computer.

How did it crash?

Ok, sorry froze

I have to run. Need to do some grocery shopping for the Mini'app'les general meeting this afternoon. Yes, my life is that exciting.

I started the DL and the page started to hang, which it should, but it froze Chrome and in turn, the computer.
@jaberg Ok, thanks for your advice!

5:21 PM
Bottom line, do what you're going to do, but I generally wouldn't go "nuke-n-pave" until I had a good handle on what was causing the problem OR had exhausted all hope of figuring it out.

OK
cool thanks!!

Why is chrome being used to download a database file?

backup

Why is chrome part of the process?

from cpanel

5:22 PM
So Chrome provides a dashboard?

What is cpanel?

cpanel is a server dashboard

Which loads in Chrome. ie, Chrome provides a dashboard.

cPanel is a Unix based web hosting control panel that provides a graphical interface and automation tools designed to simplify the process of hosting a web site. cPanel utilizes a 3 tier structure that provides functionality for administrators, resellers, and end-user website owners to control the various aspects of website and server administration through a standard web browser. In addition to the GUI interface cPanel also has command line and API based access that allows third party software vendors, web hosting organizations, and developers to automate standard system administrati...

5:23 PM
Gotcha

@jaberg Oh, yeah....I suppose it works like that

No worries. Just need to establish a common lexicon.

Yup

Any way you can SFTP into the server and try to pull the file directly?
"Chrome crashing" wouldn't be reason enough to convince me to nuke and pave a system. I'd be far more likely to rip every single thing "Chrome" from the system and not let the door hit it on the way out…
But that's me.

@jaberg no
It has to generate the SQL file via cpanel

5:26 PM
Anyhow, I really do have to run so we can continue later--regardless of what you decide to do. So long as you have backups, you should be good.
You may be inefficient, but you should be safe. (You tested the backup, right?)

I have 2 backups
I willl test the data

:)

3 hours later…
8:35 PM
I upgraded to Lion and I love it!

8:50 PM
Glad you like it.

@Daniel The one thing that's still throwing me is the scrolling.
But I'm getting used to it.

9:39 PM
Finally, the stackexchange network is back online.
@daviesgeek How you see yourself reflected in this:

9:55 PM
@gentmatt Nice one.
My only problem with the scrolling is that all the computers at school are the other way, so I need to switch back and forth. I'd change my Mac's scrolling to the other way, but I prefer it now.
Also, @gentmatt a day ago (sorry I'm a bit late): "Chrome is heavy on the CPU. That's why I use Safari." Safari, OTOH, is heavy on the RAM. I mean, it's what I use too, but still...

My reaction to 'natural scrolling' was exactly like in that picture. I didn't get it at first, because my trackpad did not support inertial scrolling.
@TimothyMuellerHarder Chrome hogs just as much ram or even more. But it splits it up into several processes (if that's the correct terminology).

@gentmatt None of those actually :-)
I learn pretty quickly, so I'm picking up the scrolling pretty fast.
@gentmatt And...BTW, I haven't had problems with Chrome since upgrading.

I also noticed that Chrome isn't 64-bit.
But that doesn't matter here.

Hmm... mine doesn't seem to use as much as that... It does use lots of CPU, yes, but I haven't noticed that much RAM use.

@daviesgeek How about the classic Exposé? I really miss it :(
@TimothyMuellerHarder Well, I got like 8 tabs open.

10:06 PM
@gentmatt Yeah, and I usually have like 19.
shrug

@TimothyMuellerHarder So, how much RAM is Chrome using on your computer in total?

Well, I don't normally have it open (I use Safari, but Chromium when I want to use Flash), but it normally uses about 500 MB of RAM. Safari, on the other hand, I've seen use ≈1.5 GB.

Wow!

@gentmatt I didn't use it that often
@gentmatt They don't have a 64-bit yet.
They're working on it.

As far as CPU is concerned, Chromium works fine for a few days to a few weeks, but then suddenly uses about 75% CPU non-stop until I restart it. Safari usually stays tame, around 2-3%.

10:11 PM
@daviesgeek Which is weird, right? Chrome usually adapts really fast - unlike Firefox...

@gentmatt I know!
I would expect them to have a 64 bit out by now.

@TimothyMuellerHarder Yes. Yes. Yes. I've seen it so often!
@daviesgeek It would make chrome more RAM hungry, would it not?

I dunno.

Win7 32-bit needs less space than 64-bit.

Now that I love! Full screen screen sharing!!!

10:13 PM
I don't know how one can apply this to RAM, but maybe @KyleCronin knows.
@KyleCronin Any idea what happened earlier? All stackexchange networks were down.
It's kind of a weird time for maintenance.

Routine maintenance.

Haha1

@gentmatt When? I didn't even notice... XD

It stopped like one hour ago.
No idea for how long this went on.

When did it start, though? I was on here not too long before that...
Oh, I see.
Never mind.

10:16 PM
How do I clear push notifications for an app in Lion?

I guess it took about 2 hours.

@gentmatt That's a long time

@daviesgeek What do you mean?

Maybe even longer.
Take a look at the active questions.

I am using iMessage on Lion and I have a badge on the app. How do I clear it? I already read the message.

10:18 PM
Ah. Is restarting iMessage out of the question?
That usually does it...

Thought that aswell.

I just did.
And nothing happened; it's still there.

Hm. Very strange.

O rly?

yah

10:18 PM
rly

killall Dock;

@gentmatt Good idea.
That fixed it.
Thanks!

:)

And yet another innocent civilian's trouble has been solved by the members of Stack Exchange! Justice triumphs over the vanquished foe of the lingering dock badge.

@gentmatt Testing on a 11" Air (first model) with 4Gb Ram and 1.6Ghz. 1 Safari crash, 1 pref pane severe slowdown, no real issues.

10:37 PM
@stuffe I really like the speed of the System Prefs on Lion. Real improvement.

RT @Nick_Craver: Heads up, #stackoverflow and the #stackexchange network will be unavailable for a bit this afternoon while we do updates
3

@daviesgeek Yes, that was really impressive to see when I opened it for the first time... and every time since.

@gentmatt yes, 64-bit apps can take up more memory than 32-bit apps because the CPU word size is doubled

@TimothyMuellerHarder Yeah, no wait for them to load at all. And, as you said, it's still impressive.

10:51 PM
@stuffe How are the Mission Control animations?
@KyleCronin Thanks! I hope it's not twice the RAM then :/

Has anyone here tried <a href="http://www.corecode.at/desktoplyrics/index.html">DesktopLyrics</a> before?
Dang it
Has anyone here tried DesktopLyrics before?corecode.at/desktoplyrics/index.html

@gentmatt No issues, smooth, no stutters.

@stuffe That's so strange! Why do I have stuttering in Mission Control on a 2011 MBP 15''?

What gfx is in that sucker?

It's not really thaaat bad. But once you've seen it rendered by the GPU... oh boy. The difference is very noticable.
6490M
Radeon
And Intel HD 3000.

10:56 PM
The hd3000 is really actually pretty nice in desktop skus

Don't you notice the difference in smoothness between Mission Control and Dock Exposé?

@gentmatt Odd. I don't have that.
Except I have a 13"

@daviesgeek So you got the HD 3000 or HD 2000, i guess.

JAS, lemme see
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
I love the new System Profiler!! First time to use it just now.
Soooo much more intuitive.

Yes, it's quite pretty.

10:59 PM
Try this: Dock expose with 6 Safari windows VS Mission Control with 4 Apps that are on the same desktop (no fullscreen mode).

Where'd the application list go?

/Applications maybe?

Especially the Memory pane... it's handy to see the individual slots visually.

@gentmatt No, the Applications list that used to be in System Profiler.

@daviesgeek What did it contain exactly?
I can't think what you're talking about...

11:01 PM
A list of all the applications on your system and all the info about them.

@daviesgeek Interesting!? I've never seen it there.

JAS.

Software -> Applications in System Information.

Ditto. Try a Spotlight search with Kind = Application.

@gentmatt Still smooth

11:01 PM
Nope

Then show any columns you want.

I found it.
Overview>System Report>Software>Applications.

Assuming you're talking about this:

11:02 PM
@stuffe That's it! I'll go to the store next monday...

@Brant Ah! You beat me to it.

I found it exactly the same moment as you.

@TimothyMuellerHarder :-)
@gentmatt No problem.
Except, what is dock expose?

@daviesgeek Never noticed that before though... that could be handy.

Is it this:

11:03 PM
@daviesgeek I think that's the feature where you right-click an app in the dock and choose "show all windows", and it brings up an Exposé view with just that app's windows.

Err wait. Yeah, that's it.

@gentmatt Yeah, no problem either way

Yes, that's it.

In Lion, you can also do a four-finger swipe down while hovering over the app icon.

11:04 PM
Well, Dock Exposé should be noticably smother.

Ooh, you can.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

This is esp. handy, as it's across all spaces.

@Brant Also called App Expose, curiously not enabled by gestures in lion by defat.
3 finger swipe up = mission control, 3 finger swipe down = app expose

In Mission Control watch the bottom left corner of the background as it get's smaller. For me it's not as smooth as in other animations.

11:05 PM
@stuffe unless three-finger drag is enabled, or you've changed the number of fingers for them.

Fun fact: Even if an app isn't running, you can 3/4-finger-swipe-down on it to see a list of recent documents
(Yeah, I use 4-finger swipes for expose/MC, because I want to use 3-finger drag. That's not the default though.)

@daviesgeek I believe that's the first I've ever been in someone else's screenshot... ;-)

@TimothyMuellerHarder ;-)
It popped up just as I took it.

@TimothyMuellerHarder True, neither of which are default tho. Unsure why app expose would be off by default. It's complimentary to mission controll, up for a top down view of everything, down to dig down and just view the current app/dock hover app windows. i use it so much

11:11 PM
I'm going hardcore on multitouch gestures :)
This is in addition to the ones set in the System Preferences.
@daviesgeek Are you aware of the two-finger swipe gesture to go forward/backward in Safari and Chrome?

@gentmatt yes
@gentmatt BTT?

Also, if you like inertial scrolling, play more with Safari. There, the implementation is more like in the iPhone.

@gentmatt What is that?! I've been looking for something to do that with ever since I upgraded to Lion!

@daviesgeek yes.
@TimothyMuellerHarder boastr.de

THANK YOU
(and pardon my caps)

11:14 PM
no prob. This software is just very awesome.

It looks it.

One very nice feature of BTT is that you can set gestures on a per-app basis.

I've wanted to set something to switch tabs in Safari with for months, so that'll be awesome.

This is how I switch tabs in safari: Simple touch gestures instead of shortcuts.

Plus, it seems I can add more gestures to my Magic Mouse? :D

11:17 PM
yes.
#stackoverflow is back online, sorry for the delay, we ran into some unexpected issues and will explain in a postmortem.

BetterSnapTool is a nice utility by the same author of BetterTouchTool. It's not free, but it doesn't require any setup. It basically adds Aero Snap to OS X.

I got that aswell.
Very reasonable price.
If the price for an app is low, I always say to myself: "Ok, that's no desert for the next meal." Then I click 'purchase'.

@gentmatt Hm, interesting way of thinking about it.

@gentmatt I prefer Jitouch for those, just because it is easier to use.
however, it's $12
And there are a whole bunch of presets already set.
I'm just using the trial ;-)

@daviesgeek Are the gestures customizable?

11:29 PM
yes
DL it and try the trial version

@gentmatt Let me know which you prefer.

Ah, I got to support BTT. 1) German software 2) The developer studied at the same university.
:)
@daviesgeek That does look very sweet!

@gentmatt Haha, OK. Plus it seems Jitouch is only in Beta for Lion... with a bunch of issues: jitouch.com/index.php?page=support#knownissues

@TimothyMuellerHarder I don't have trouble w/ it.
And I'm on Lion!
@gentmatt It is
And the one-fix two-slide down works.

You know, I'd buy it maybe. But I bought iStat Menu and Radium yesterday.

11:33 PM
I will buy it once I get my own computer ;-)

Enough for the week ;)

@gentmatt You can only skip so many desserts.

@TimothyMuellerHarder That's two XXL MC Donald's meals. Only little apps count as deserts ;)

@gentmatt But why McDonald's in the first place?

It's funny how I paid for those two menulets about the same as for lion...
@TimothyMuellerHarder Everyone knows McDonalds prices. It's an international currency for measuring the value of something.
</irony>

11:36 PM
@gentmatt That is funny

@daviesgeek I'll add Radium to your menulet question.
2
Q: What are your favorite menulets (or Menu Extras as Apple calls them)?

daviesgeekYes, I know, it's another list, but here goes: What is your favorite menulet and what is it used for? Please one post one menulet per answer. wow, lots of weekend chatting
I'm a bit sad I've missed this.

@gentmatt This is definitely taking your irony too literally, but I can't say I've been to McD's more than twice, ever.

11:52 PM
@gentmatt You are adding a ton to the question.

gfxcardstatus, Boom, Radium
And one more (in progress)
