I'd like to know where to look to find out how to upload an image to a RaspberryPi.SE Question/Answer, can anyone help ?
08:58
Morning all.
@imagedoctor You want to upload an image?
Did you work it out?
@dunsmoreb It's worse for me, I was 100 rep away from trusted user :D Now I'm 2k rep away
haha
@Jivings Perhaps, if the answer is use link to an external publically hosted image repository?
@imagedoctor That's not encouraged.
You can attach an image to a question, but perhaps you need a certain amount of rep.
If you link me to the image then I can add it to your question.
@Jivings I checked the FAQ, from the section on formatting messages there is a mention that some links will be automatically inlined, amongst those mentioned are images, so I inferred that was an acceptable way of posting images. But on closer inspection I see that the FAQ that is linked to is for chat.
I notice I have the insert image tab when I actually start to create a question, so as per your suggestion, I'll use that method :)
09:30
Great.
09:50
@imagedoctor I'm still waiting for your question to appear :)
@Jivings Sorry, focused pulled to other local events :)
10:20
Just went a bit crazy on this question: raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/508/…
0
A: How can I protect against intrusion and malware before connecting it to the internet (especially on a public IP address)?

JivingsThis is a very important question, so I'm going to be as thorough as possible, please try to read as much as you can. There are many ways to address vulnerabilities, however the first thing you should know is that Linux isn't as susceptible to intrusion as other Operating Systems. This is mainly...

Might be a good one to link to externally.
10:49
Anyone who still needs an SD card. Great deal here: ebuyer.com/…
@Jivings excellent job on a question that has consumed many a book
11:02
@SteveRobillard Thanks.
If you have anything to add, feel free. It will probably end as community wiki
@Jivingswill do don't know if I have the energy today (arthritis) tot type about iptables
I considered talking about IP tables.
But it's actually not installed by default any more in most distros, and it quite complex to explain briefly.
@Jivings or logging for that matter at some point someone is going to post a question and everyone's 1st response will be what do the logs say and most likely they won't even know what we are talking about
Hmm. Good point.
@Jivingsyeah I am old school been running linux since redhat 4
11:09
Used to dealing with problems then :P
@Jivings especially since it was on an ibm with mbs (a very nonstandard bus which was what killed the ibm pc) I like that "dealing with prolems - sounds better than old
Haha
Some Reddit submissions to keep half an eye on: pay.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/duplicates/vbnlf/…
@Jivings surprised no one has asked how to startx automatically
I think they have somewhere..
Maybe not. Maybe you could do a self post? I'm sick of explaining how to do that.
Actually, it's a bit of trouble on my Pi. I can't figure out why.
@Jivings have you run top on your pi
11:14
Why?
Looking at it now.
I can't for the life of me make since of the cpu numbers constantly above 1 running my geckoboard dashboard on chromium
%Cpu(s): 1.3 us, 0.3 sy, 0.0 ni, 98.0 id, 0.0 wa, 0.0 hi, 0.3 si, 0.0 st
@Jivings without major problem - little slow responding
@Jivings sorry meant the load avgs
load average: 0.05, 0.03, 0.05
Above 1?!
@Jivings yeah chromium is a hog especially when doing JS
11:17
NIghtmare.
What are you using it for?
@you wouldthink but like I said a little slow responding running my geckoboard.com dashboard info radiator
I see.
Can't you use a more lightweight browser? Or don't they have the JS capabilities?
@Jivings open to suggestions midori has some issues crashes on certain pages.
How about Swiftfox?
That has an ARM build.
@Jivings thanks hadn't heard about them
11:23
I might give it a go too
Maybe there isn't an arm build...
No good.
@Jivingswhat are you running on your pi now (I have played with Debian and raspxbmc)
Arch
putting Debian back on later so I can give puppet a go
Arch is the only distro for me :)
I tried xbmc too, but it was frustrating.
@JivingsI am holding out for RHEL -LOL yeah that was my xbmc experience too
@though I was impressed with it's capabilities playback nomn streaming
11:27
Absolutely no customisation because the entire filesystem is from squashfs. puke
I'm having some issues booting directly into x.
@yeah and it overides the linux underpinnings I couldn't even get it to do simple things like shutdown correctly
Couldn't even change the root password or hostname without recompiling the entire distro.
No thanks.
@yeah I think their thinking is as simple as possible not neccesarily the linux philosophy
@Jivings but for a set top box I guess it makes since
Yes, as long as all you ever want from it is media playback.
@SteveRobillard If you install omxplayer in the other distros then you get the same amazing playback.
@jivings will be interesting to see what niches actually appear for the niche will it really become an educational thing for kids not just old guys into electronucs and computers I have not seen a single post from a child with a real question have you
will have to check out omxplayer
11:32
@SteveRobillard Yeah, it's been an interesting start.
@SteveRobillard It's pretty much the only media player that utilises the GPU for playback.
@JivingsI would be curious to see how many also have an arduino
Yes indeed
12:38
Already lots of new users: raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/…

15:15
Hey.

2 hours later…
17:07
ok so why did I lose 1 reputation based on my comment to this question raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/560/…
What do you mean?
@dunsmoreb I figured it out because I downvoted an answer -1 for me (what I don't quite understand now is why downvoting an answer is considered a bad thing and results in -1 for me?
Wait for it...
22
Q: If downvoting is so important, why does it cost reputation?

zneakI've just read that downvoting is used to ban poor askers. However, there are many, many members who will never dare downvote anything because of that little 1 rep. (Besides, I think downvoting is not taken into account in the 200 daily reputation limit, but I'm not sure.) This has, as a side eff...

Bam.
@dunsmoreb thank you.
@SteveRobillard No problem.
17:32
Hello All.
Yello @Jivings.
How's it going?
Good. I got a question.
Can packages from the Arch Packages Repo be install on Arch ARM?
Do you mean from the AUR?
No. From the official packages list. archlinux.org/packages
17:35
Ah, you want the official ARM package list. archlinuxarm.org/packages
Which arch works for RPi?
ARMv5te or ARMv7?
Uh good question. I think v5te
@AlexChamberlain Can we delete our discussion here now?
I am a tool - I meant iptable! — Alex Chamberlain 3 hours ago
lol didn't mean to link to that.
It will do though :D
Weird... lol.
@Jivings Thanks. By the way, can you look over my answer?

A: Objective C enviroment

dunsmoreb Do any of the standard distributions come with Objective C environment? As far as I'm aware neither Debian, Fedora, nor Arch Linux come with an Objective-C compiler, or any other related tools, by default. You will need to install them via their respective package managers. Is there anyw...

No I did not. Thank you.
17:38
@dunsmoreb Looks fine to me.
Cool. I wasn't sure about the repo links. =P
I also posted a question on HackerNews.
Good idea.
Got about 50 hits.
Could be worse.
You got two points. =P
17:40
For what?
On HN. Silly. =P
Oh really? I can't find the post now.
Search for raspberry pi at the bottom.
@Jivings By the way, I figured out why pacman -S yaourt worked for you and not me.
Ah
Why's that then? I was trying to work it out earlier.
You were installing it on your RPi.
17:43
Had you not ran pacman -Syy perhaps?
It shows up on the Arch Linux ARM package list, but not Arch Linux.
What difference does that make?
Search for yaourt here: archlinuxarm.org/packages
I can install it on my desktop too though.
I tested both.
What?!
It is not in the official packages list.
It must be something with the mirror you are synced to?
17:45
Scratch that.
What?
My desktop pacman is screwed up somehow.
So sad.
It's failing to sync, so probably I didn't test it.
Can you tell me what you think of this answer?

A: Can I speed up web browsing on the Raspberry Pi?

popcornmixIf you are on Debian Squeeze, install Chromium. It is substantially faster: http://elinux.org/RPi_Chromium Upgrading to Debian Wheezy (http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1435) also gives a significant speed boost. First choice for speed is to use Raspbian, a Debian Wheezy distribution built wi...

Sure.
Tough one.
17:48
I know. I don't think there's actually any evidence in it to support the claims.
I thought about commenting, but couldn't think how it could be improved.
Ya.
I would just downvote it and leave a comment.
> Can you back up your claims with facts, please?
Tada.
@Jivings Could you cross-compile clang for the Pi?
What now?

Couldn't you theoretically cross-compile clang for Raspberry Pi on another, faster machine?
I didn't mean compiling clang.
17:51
I meant compiling Objective C with clang.
Got it. =P
But yeah compiling clang would be slow too! :D
Maybe you should move the comment to the question then?
And I'll update my answer with the possibility of that.
18:38
@dunsmoreb That mouse question is strange.
3
Q: To what extent can the device be used without a mouse?

ACarterI'm sure I read somewhere that the RPi can be used without a mouse, but is this 100% true? (I am planning on using debian.) To what extent can I control it without a mouse? Will I be able to do everything with just a keyboard, or are there some features or applications I would need a mouse for?

Hey @Shog9, are you around?
18:55
@Jivings Sorry.
Just got back.
I have to agree, I don't know if that question is very constructive?

1 hour later…
20:19
@Jivings Sorta. What's up?
20:30
@Shog9 Are you going to publish your question soon?
@dunsmoreb Probably, but:
yesterday, by Shog9
@dunsmoreb Probably tomorrow, but... I realized I was kinda going off on a tangent here with that anyway (that's the trouble with trying to write about one thing while having a conversation about something else). Here's my take on @Jiving's post from earlier:
The idea I had of building one on the other wasn't a good idea
Building one on the other?
I'm addressing two different (if related) issues, so trying to cheat on the raspi post by lumping it into a MSO post just ends up confusing things.
As one of my teammates said, the first revision of my MSO post basically laid out a description of several problems and then presented a solution that didn't completely address them - biting off too much at once. That's why I went ahead and just posted an answer to @Jivings's meta post yesterday.
20:43
Okay.
@Shog9 It was a good response, thanks.
np. It ended up being a bit too long anyway, so I'm glad I didn't try to drag in anything else.
@Shog9 I was wondering if it was possible to relieve a tag wiki ban. The offender is new and hadn't seen my responses as to why his tags had been declined so he kept submitting them.
He's now read the guidelines.
@Jivings Suggested edits? No. It expires automatically in 7 days.
Alright, no worries then.
21:39
@dunsmoreb You don't have edit privs?!
@Jivings Not any more. D=>
I still need 175 rep.
The supreme council of the Pi took them away from you.
Really sad considering I'm the top editor. =/
AND THE SUPREME LEADER OF THE COUNCIL OF THE PI. D=>
Haha
21:59
I need 2 rep to get my admin tools back.
And I have two pending wiki edits :D
=P
If only I was that lucky. D=>
lol, you should work harder :P
lol okay okay :)
22:01
I was only kidding :)
I wish I had crowds upvoting my answers no matter what. =P
What's participation based on?
Idk. I think answers, questions, comments, votes, edits, etc.
Like the total of all those I think.
I see
Just got an upvote.
I just got an edit approved. I guess it's a start. Right? =P
22:05
That was me :)
You. =P
I'll see what I get tomorrow when all the British people come on. =P
The next 100 rep I make is going as bounty
Excluding you. =P
Haha
I'll be giving you a chance to make a cool 100 rep.
Let me guess. That Arch support question? =P
22:07
lol
The wireless one.

Q: Building Wireless Drivers for Edimax Wireless USB: EW-7811UN

JivingsI've been trying on and off for days to build the module for my USB wireless device. It is an Edimax EW-7811UN I've found several resources on building modules for Debian, but none for Arch. Attempting to build the module on the RPi yields the following ouput: $ make make ARCH=armv6l -C /lib...

Knew it. =P
third question ever posted. Unanswered still/
Here. I'll help you right now.
Room?
What?
What room should we use?
22:09
Don't mind.
How about this room? =P
Haha might as well.
Okay.
First off. Does /usr/src/linux-3.1.9-20-ARCH+/ exist?
Kernel has been updated since then. It's /usr/src/linux-3.1.9-22-ARCH+ now
I should probably try compiling against the new kernel first.
K.
Yes. Good idea. =P
22:12
The source for the driver is terrible.
You actually have to edit the MakeFile to add a new architecture.
Really? Wow.
Well it hasn't failed instantly.
Now it has.
Okay.
What was the error?
My first error, I know how this is fixed.
fatal error: linux/smp_lock.h: No such file or directory
Okay. Fix it. =P
22:15
I can hack fix it by creating the smp_lock.h file.
I think the question is.
> Why is there no linux/smp_lock.h?
I looked it up, I think it was deprecated or something.
Do you have the kernel headers installed?
Okay.
I'm sorry. I'm just googling your answers away. =P
I have to go though. No!!! D=>
22:17
Oh dear
To eat dinner and watch The Shinning.
={P Bye.
Awesome film
Never seen it.
