@dunsmoreb Hello.
@Jivings Hey.
Sorry I haven't been on frequently. I was on vacation in OK, USA.
How's it going? Just noticed you'd appeared.
Nice.
I know right?
I just got back from an eight hour car ride... =P
And straight onto RPi SE. Dedication.
Ikr?
This is like the first thing I check every day. =P
00:12
Me too atm.
What is with all the non-RPi questions?
Like this one.
There have been a few about software today.

Q: Taking a screenshot (within X)

Andrew FoggHow can I take a screenshot in X.org? I am unsure if the Print Screen button will "just work" and I don't know how I would go about testing it.

I know.
I don't think this is really RPi-related. Seems like something for Unix and Linux.
00:14
That sort of thing is difficult.
It is made even worse about the fact that nobody vists meta.
It would be easier if we could vote to migrate. I guess that is a beta restriction.
I was moaning on meta earlier.,
I guess we will have to decide which sites we want to have for that.
Some tag edits today were terrible.
Really?
Like which ones?
00:15
[tag:waterproofing]
Waterproofing is the process of protecting something from water.
I retagged to for your question.
> Maybe you are just not very good at writing tag wiki entries.
Haha. I love that.
:D
My question?
Si.

Q: Is there any workaround for Netflix compatibility?

hidden_premiseI know that netflix does not work with Linux because the open-source Silverlight (moonlight) doesn't support encryption. Have any workarounds or solutions been identified to bring Netflix to the Raspberry Pi for those of us that want to create media centers?

00:17
Posted by hidden_premise
Really?

Q: How do I install new software?

Andrew FoggI am aware that Linux distributions usually have 'package managers' to allow me to download and install software from the command line and that I should also be able to download and compile source code from the web but I am not sure about how best to do either of these things on the Raspberry Pi.

@Jivings I just looked at the modified field. Sorry.
:|
I know. Seem to have got a lot of those today...
I can't believe that there is only one other close vote...
You have mine now.
Coolio.
I feel like the problem is that people don't know about our decision on meta.
00:20
Why is Debian considered the standard installation?
I have no clue...
@Shog9 Can we put a notice to a meta question on the site?
Which question?
The OS one. Let me see which one...
I know what you mean.
I'm really hating this answer...
10
A: Raspberry Pi itself vs. specific OS issues

Oliver SalzburgI think RaspberryPi.SE should be a harbor for people who are interested in the subject or newcomers that desperately require guidance. As long as what they're doing is done on the Raspberry Pi, it's on-topic. I see the site like, for example, AskUbuntu.SE. Of course it has a major overlap with U...

00:23
It seems to have the majority.
@dunsmoreb There are four meta questions listed at the top of the right-hand sidebar (the "bulletin board"). The one you want isn't in there?
I see the point. There will be a lot of newcomers to linux here.
@Shog9 No.
I want this one...
And in some way I want to encourage them as much as possible.

A: Linux Questions: to close/migrate or to accept

Robert CartainoI don't know enough about the subject to answer your question directly, but I can provide some guidance to point you in the right direction. Note: When I say "Raspberry Pi", I'm speaking generically about any subject — This site is about the subject of "Raspberry Pi" — You cannot re...

@Jivings I just don't like all these questions not related to the RPi.
I mean these new questions have nothing to with he RPi.
00:25
Granted, the how do I install software question is terrible.
@dunsmoreb wouldn't have shown up because it was at +2, and the threshold is +3. Also, it's closed. Gonna merge those answers into the other question if you've no objections.
This guy seems to be a pretty big offender.
@Shog9 None at all.
Should we edit this question to apply to all OSs?

Q: How do I install Google Chrome?

Andrew FoggWhen I go to download Google Chrome from http://www.google.com/chrome in Midori on the Raspberry Pi , I am presented with a modal dialogue box, Please select your download package: 32 bit .deb (For Debian/Ubuntu) 64 bit .deb (For Debian/Ubuntu) 32 bit .rpm (For Fedora/openSUSE) ...

Has to do with more, "How do I install Google Chrome on ARM?"
Yeah I guess.
My cross compiling was a big failure.
Which one?
@dunsmoreb Merged.
00:27
@Shog9 Thanks.
Now can we get that question on the side thing?
The meta questions shown on the front page rotate periodically, btw
Okay.
If it's not shown now, it should show up later. Of course, feel free to link to it when / where it's relevant.
Coolio.
Thanks
"You don't want to set up an environment where the mere mention of "Linux" brings down the wrath of the ban hammer. Always consider the context, and always provide sound, friendly guidance about why you've taken the actions you've chosen."
That's what I'm worried will happen if we start closing all Linux questions.
00:29
> You don't want to set up an environment where the mere mention of "Linux" brings down the wrath of the ban hammer. Always consider the context, and always provide sound, friendly guidance about why you've taken the actions you've chosen.

There. Nice formatting for pinning. =P
Nice.
> Like this?
@Jivings I'm not proposing the we close all Linux questions.
I'm just saying that we close Linux questions that are not somewhat specific to RPi.
I think you're right about that.
Like this question.

Q: How do I install new software?

Andrew FoggI am aware that Linux distributions usually have 'package managers' to allow me to download and install software from the command line and that I should also be able to download and compile source code from the web but I am not sure about how best to do either of these things on the Raspberry Pi.

Is not specific to the RPi at all.
I'm trying to think of how that can be re-phrased to work. But it really cannot.

Q: Taking a screenshot (within X)

Andrew FoggHow can I take a screenshot in X.org? I am unsure if the Print Screen button will "just work" and I don't know how I would go about testing it.

Similar question.
@Jivings Same.
How about?
Alright, let's get these closed.
> Questions that apply to non-RPi devices are off-topic?
I think that is a good base though could be rephrased a little bit.
How about
> Questions that cannot be solely attributed to the Raspberry Pi.
Got to go.
Be back in 15-20 mins.
00:34
@Shog9 I wanted to delete it tbh
@Jivings Ah, you'd need to roll it back to the first revision for that. Done.
Okay. I'll let someone else come up with something. But I actually don't think the tag will be used again.
@Shog9 I think we need to get some proper content in the heavily used tags really. Before worrying about the others.
@Jivings Yeah, don't stress about them too much. Tag excerpts / wikis are most useful for the first dozen or so by frequency, followed by those that need some usage guidance.
Alright thanks.
@Shog9 When you VTC as Off Topic, what determines the list of sites you can migrate too?
@Jivings It's a hand-picked list of sites that are likely to be useful (at most 5). The meta site will always be on there. For beta sites, it'll be the only one - migration elsewhere is moderator only until graduation (at which point there should be enough data and a solid enough scope to allow us to establish the others).
00:47
Okay cool.
I did a quick search of unix.se, for an exact equivalent of #387 but was surprised when I did not find one
During the private beta, we generally discourage anything from being migrated - either in or out. If something's off-topic, it should just be closed - that way it can be discussed (and potentially edited, re-opened, etc) without another site getting in the way.
@finnw Yeah, beginner topics are generally less well-represented on U&L (they're not off-topic, but the audience includes fewer beginners).
Generally a user will use the package manager when installing a system, or it is covered very early in the beginners guide.
Why don't I see an "improve" button in edit review (as I do on SO?)
I see it sometimes, but not others.
00:55
Oh I think I know - @Jivings edit is on a tag wiki not an answer
That's probably it.
@Jivings, I think this part is a bit confusing: "Use for questions related to the architecture of the Raspberry Pi. For compilation questions, consider the cross-compiling tag."
Get rid of the second half then.
That's not what I mean... "architecture of the Raspberry Pi" sounds like it refers to the overall design, you want to make clear that it refers to the CPU
Oh right.
What would you put?
01:00
I'm not sure
How about.

Questions concerning the ARMv6 processor that drives the Raspberry Pi.
Yes I like that one
You got it
01:17
Oh dear, I seem to be the most close voter on the site
Haha, I'm surprised its not @dunsmoreb
@finnw Maybe, "questions related to the CPU and instruction set of the Raspberry Pi. See also: cross-compiling"
I just looked at the "close" tab under "review" - every question that has at least one close vote, and I was one of the close voters every time
@Shog9 I'll take a look at it again.
Only 9 of us can VTC right now though, and I'm not aware of mods closing anything yet
Oh sorry, 16
01:25
:)
@finnw 1 post mod-closed, three deleted
@Jivings: about Stella on arch, what do you mean by "fine". Does it react quickly when you click on buttons?
tbh, I just started it.
I didn't test it. If you like I can have another look, but my Pi is just compiling something else atm.
on X mine starts too, but it's not fast
for example, try to go to settings and click some buttons
I'm heading to bed now, but I'll take another look in the morning.
It's 2:30AM here.
01:32
ok, thanks!
G'night all
Hey.
Sorry it took me so long, had to remove a branch from the roof...
@Jivings Haha. Thanks dawg. =P

A: Shouldn't popular questions require more votes to close?

Adam DavisNo. Popularity does not, and should not, supersede the site guidelines. We shouldn't decrease the site's signal to noise ratio and allow subjective, off-topic, etc questions simply because they are popular. Further, introducing such a rule suddenly ties questions to time. Every new question w...

Very relevant to us I think :-)
VERY.
Maybe we should create a meta post for this, that way it shows in the Community Bulletin?
I'm surprised that I'm the top user by participation... =P
Should we retag as ?
01:51
@dunsmoreb, I don't think so, just because superuser doesn't.
@finnw Well the tag desc makes the actual tag name kinda ambiguous.
From my experience, users do not read the tag descriptions and so we need to make the tag names as descriptive as possible.

8 hours later…
09:54
@dunsmoreb I struggled with that tag description

5 hours later…
14:27
@Jivings The one?
Yes. I thought about
Probably an improvement.
@dunsmoreb Are you going to be working on tags today? :)
@Jivings Si.
Yay.
I'm off to play some badminton in a sec. But I can approve edits in a couple of hours so go mental.
Ya! Badminton! =D
I rock at that game. =P
Awesome.
My Pi has been annoying me this morning, so I'm going to take my mind off it!
14:30
I just found out that I won't get my Pi until August...
Wow, that sucks
Ikr? School starts in that month too! D=>
Oh dear
What?
You wont get any RPi alone time.
14:33
Ikr?! D=>
> And finally, Warrington Collegiate have been working on getting Windows 7 (!) running on the Raspberry Pi using the VMware View Open Client.
> Nick made a download available this morning – get testing!
No thanks!
Haha.
Impressive, but I favour Linux anyway.
I wonder why my star is at the top?
Time to go!
14:42
Okay. Bye! D=>
Probably because you're the room admin
Your posts weren't super starred though...
@Jivings Did you approve my edit. =P
15:40
@dunsmoreb, I don't think it is necessary to avoid on questions, as you edit seems to imply...
That would be like insisting on not mentioning because implies it
@finnw Wait for it...
Here you go. This one is you.
> There's only one question atm, but I would expect alternative-power to mean powering the device using anything but a micro-USB charger
yes, but I would put both tags on that question
indeed the 2 current questions do have both tags
Okay.
Wait a sec then.
Tada.

2 hours later…
Hello
@Jivings Hey.
I've edited about six tag wikis.
How's it going? 16 suggested edits for me to review. Nice work.
Some are by ACarter.
And are being rejected...
Display: This tag should be used for questions relating to how to connect and use display sytemss for the Rasberry Pi.
How can that be improved? (ignoring the typo)
17:56
Hmm...
[tag:display]
@OliverSalzburg Yes?
Just FYI ;D
Thanks Oliver...
lol
And I needed to click that to see what has been tagged with it ;)
Better.
Could you take a look at ?
I also copied the excerpt into the wiki.
@Jivings Sure.
Thanks.
I approved it because it's better than nothing
How about.
> Java is a C-like programming language developed by Sun Microsystems.
Some example questions would be nice. The Wiki is just unfinished.
What should refer to?
18:04
Just wrote an Android wiki for you. Quite brief, but a good start?
The suggestion for it is "Questions related to security of data on the Raspberry Pi."
Seems a bit broad.
You could copy the Java one from StackOverflow (minus the FAQ section)
Well I have to go.
I'll probably be back in an hour.
Bye.
@AlexChamberlain Actually Android supports ARM, MIPS, and x86 too
18:06
Oh, I just got +2 rep from a tag wiki edit. Didn't know that was possible once you had over 1000
Is it primarily developed for MIPS and x86?
Or primarily developed for ARM, with MIPS and x86 ports?
I think it's just Google TV that uses x86
@finnw I'm still getting +2s
You get +2s until you have +1000 from edits?
Could be. I have no idea.
We need to get out of private beta now. The questions have dried up.
Agree, there are a lot of artificial questions too - need some real ones
18:11
Found the answer:
7
A: No reputation from suggested edits

Nick CraverThere were 2 bugs here, one fixed 2 days ago one fixed just a few moments ago. First, post deletions weren't immediately affecting your rep as they should have (it was getting skewed) - that was fixed 2 days ago. Second, the "do you have 1,000 rep from suggested edits?" check wasn't paying atte...

Yes, it's tempting to ask artificial ones :-)
I know how to liven things up...
I still have unanswered questions though.
So I guess we need new users.
I just started a bounty on one of my questions
I just hope we get to public beta (and someone who knows the answer joins) before it expires!
I was going to wait for public before I put bounty on mine.
18:35
Back! =D
18:47
Advice from someone who's sorting out this sort of thing on a much more mature site, sort this out right now while there aren't many questions to edit. — Tom Medley 8 hours ago
Are we planning to make a move on that, btw?
I think we should.
The majority agrees that we should spell it out, so we should do that.
I don't think this is related to RPi.

Q: Should I create a new user on my Raspberry Pi or am I ok just using the "pi" user that came with it?

Andrew FoggI am interested to know if there may be any security or permissions related reasons for creating a new user. I am using the Debian "squeeze" distribution from the RPi website.
