@dunsmoreb I like the color choice but it doesn't appear to have a way to export the GPIO pins. The adafruit model has a slot for a ribbon cable.
@SteveRobillard True.
@dunsmoreb not to mention because they are only 75 miles away and the case is already done I will have it by next week the latest.
Coolio.

Q: What kind of HDMI cable do I need?

asalamon74What kind of HDMI cable do I need if I want to connect my Raspberry PI to a full HD ( 1920 x 1080 ) TV (which has HDMI input)? According to the Wikipedia, there are 5 types of HDMI connectors: A, B, C, D, E, and several types of cables: Standard, High Speed, Automotive. Which one should be used?

@Jivings How come I didn't have to approve your edit?
Because he has over 500 rep
I'm a hero.
@AlexChamberlain I hope you were happy with my edit. I thought that needed to be emphasised!
That's fine. But I just got 500 rep, so be warned! :P
Haha
Do we need a [tag: sudo]?
I can't imaging there will be many questions actually about sudo. Just answers that require it.
What am I doing wrong?
Better.
11:57
I added, because I thought it might be added and I thought we could see how it developed
What were you doing wrong?
[tag: sudo]
[ tag: sudo ]
Putting a space after tag
I've just hit the rep limit for today :(
[ tag : sudo]
I'm on 90 and I've not answered any yet.
That sucks, how can I catch you up?
@Alex: the +15 from accepted answers is immune from the cap
as are bounties
11:59
I'm going to put a bounty on one of my questions at some point.
Otherwise no-one will ever answer it.
If I can't solve it today I will bounty it up.
@finnw Out of 19 questions, only 1 of mine has been accepted
3 of those questions were my own in all fairness
12:38
I think this is off-topic:

Q: Why do I have to `sudo`?

Alex ChamberlainI've followed a couple of tutorials on my RPi and a lot of commands start with sudo; what does it mean and what does it do?

As useful as it may be, it is not RasPi-specific.
There is a little debate on the meta thread
A few of us agree, however, that we need to be friendly to questions from beginners
If I'm answering a question and it requires the user download a file from a specific location, how do I deal with linking to that file?
But we don't want to have our own duplicates of every linux beginner question from the U+L site
@finnw As such, I think it is more appropriate to link to other SE questions, rather than merge them away from RPi.SE
@Jivings What file?
It's a kernel image.
12:41
Send them to the webpage, rather than that link
500Mb download by accident isn't cool
Even if we have the most common ones (i.e. the ones that make it into our FAQ), I think they should be closed/locked.
Locked, yes
Can we put a high rep requirement on the locked questions?
that's called "protect" but that is not what I meant...

Q: FAQ for Stack Exchange sites

Justin StandardCommunity FAQ For sites in the Stack Exchange 2.0 network To see a list of commonly used words and phrases, see the glossary. Asking questions How do I write a good title? How can I get answers fast? Is there a limit on how many questions I can ask? How should we deal with Google questi...

There's "closed", "locked", "deleted" and "protected". They are all different
Only moderators can lock. The others can be done by voting.
Also, closed questions are not necessarily deleted (that is another common point of confusion)
They should be locked.
They should be protected
12:50
:-D
I think you're right, having read the FAQ. Protected makes more sense.
I look forward to trying your QEMU answer later
I think they should also be closed (but not deleted) because new answers are unlikely to be helpful
(and maybe locked in future, if they get reopened/closed repeatedly, which they might.)
We'll see how it goes
When someone becomes a mod, they can protect them

Q: Is the RasPi a suitable dev environment?

Tom MedleyI don't have a linux box at home, so I'd like to use my RasPi to try out some development on linux. Is it fast enough to cope with this? Will binaries compiled on it run on other, more standard linux boxes, or will they only run on the RasPi?

Not constructive?
One could explain how to build a version of GCC that will cross-compile to X86...
But the question is mostly "is it suitable/fast enough." My guess would be no, but that's subjective
It depends on the question.
If he wants to run an IDE, then probably no good.
13:37
@finnw Ha I got a notification for this. Hello!
I think that's a bug (I said it to the other Alex)
I expect when I say "@Alex" you will both get notifications :-)
even if you have not been in this room for 10 years
That could be annoying on SE or a more popular chat. Raise a ticket? :D
The other Alex is @AlexChamberlain
@Alex re the sudo question, keeping it open is not the same thing as keeping the question (i.e. not deleting it.) I voted to close because it should not keep receiving new answers (but not delete because it should remain up for users to find.)
@finnw I agree
14:00
@finnw But again, that's @AlexChamberlain you want. Not @Alex.
I think we should give questions a bit more time to pan out
Instead of closing, we should change the scope slightly
@Jivings: No I did mean @Alex (he recently commented on that question)
Or post it meta and reach a verdict
Oh okay
There's already a meta question about that

Q: Linux Questions: to close/migrate or to accept

jandjorgensenIt's apparent already that there are going to be a lot of questions relating to basic setup and accomplishing certain tasks within Linux. A choice we're going to have to make is whether to close/migrate these questions or to accept them as part of the community. Traditionally I believe that SE ...

I agree with Robert Cartaino's answer.
14:07
I agree with Cade Roux's answer :)
I get notifications for both @Alex and @AlexChamberlain
I don't think we should accept meta questions so soon
I agree.
There are at least a hundred members on the site, and it was accepted with only three upvotes
14:08
Probably because he is a mod...

Should we edit this to remove the subjective parts?
Which parts are subjective?
> Is it fast enough to cope with this?
And the title is also subjective.
Yeah I guess. Propose an edit
How do we remove RPi from the title?
I'm writing an edit right now.
There seems to be only one non-subjective question.
> Will compiled binaries run on other Linux boxes?
Would the apply to this question?
14:14
I initially thought that, but I don't think he really wants to cross-compile (that is taking it too literally.)
I don't think so.
Okay.
There.

Tom MedleyI don't have a linux box at home, so I'd like to use my Raspberry Pi to try out some development on Linux. Will binaries compiled on it run on other, more standard Linux boxes, or will they only run on the Raspberry Pi?

You have just changed the question!
Agreed, you ruined everything again
:P
That was the only non-subjective question in there.
14:16
I've deleted my answer as it no longer applies.
Yes, I've deleted all but one line of mine
haha
berry120's answer now looks out-of-place, even though it was a good answer to the original question
If I'd like to make a question searchable by either the 'emulation' or 'emulate' keyword, should I edit it to add the missing keyword?
The tag should be enough to let people search for it
14:20
I think the search index must have refreshed or something, because before when I searched "emulate", my question didn't appear
7
Q: Emulation on a PC

AlexHow can I connect an SD card containing a Raspberry Pi OS to my PC, and boot the OS in an emulator? Why won't VMWare work? What are the limitations?

Google will find it anyway, if the user enters "emulate"
I mean in the site search, I think the site is still invisible to the outside world
But it will only be invisible to the outside world for a couple of weeks, after which it will not matter
Although it allows users to search before asking a duplicate question, we cannot rely on them to do that

Q: Can I stream 1080p video from the Pi?

berry120We all know the Pi can play 1080p video no problem, but is it fast enough to act as the basis for a file server that can stream 1080p video over its wired network connection? I'm thinking of using mine as a media server of sorts to stream 1080p HD video (with DTS-HD audio) and interested to know...

I'm not sure about this one - I think it would be better on the forum. Not constructive?
I think it's possible to answer conclusively with a benchmark
Whatever the answer, the same would apply to any question of the form "Is there a project that does X"
Actually no, it follows a different pattern....
"Is the RasPi fast enough to do X"
14:30
I think "Can the Rpi do this?" questions are going to be asked
Those questions will be fun.
How can I install world of warcraft? I can't see anywhere for the CD...
@Alex That is a tough one.
It is not subjective so it could stay...

A: "Is the RasPi fast enough for <*some task*>" questions

dunsmorebIf the question was phrased, such as. Is the RPi fast enough for X? Then I would say close it as subjective. Just because people's idea of fast differs. What may be really fast for me, I only get a 10 Mbs Internet connection, may be really slow for you, you get a 200 Mbs Internet connection...

@dunsmoreb Jinx!
@Alex Actually no. I answered it 16 seconds before you. =P
14:38
Upvotes all round!
Haha.
Can I flag answers as duplicate?
:P
I would just VTC as duplicate.
That way we can actually get something done. =P
No, not answers, only questions
Oh. Didn't notice the answer part...
I feel like this question is off-topic.

Q: Why do I have to `sudo`?

Alex ChamberlainI've followed a couple of tutorials on my RPi and a lot of commands start with sudo; what does it mean and what does it do?

> Is the crux of the question primarily about Raspberry Pi? Or is it a larger concern best answered elsewhere?
According to Robert these types of questions are off-topic.
14:49
I agree (I already voted to close that one)
We discussed that one earlier...
and I think we agreed that it should stay up (searchable) even if closed (no new answers accepted)
And so that we have something to link to if someone else dupes it later
Cool.
It will be duped daily...
I just added to those posts I linked in my meta question
Agreed.
What are everyone's thoughts on this?
I don't think this makes a good question, because it is effectively "please run a benchmark for me" or "please google for benchmark results for me." — finnw 15 mins ago
(I meant the whole question, not just that comment)
14:57
The question might be helpful. =P
2
Q: "Is the RasPi fast enough for <some task>" questions

finnwShould such questions be considered on-topic? This is a pattern that has been repeated in a few questions now. Examples: Can I stream 1080p video from the Pi? What kind of performance can I expect from using a Pi as a webserver? Running 1080p video from within X.Org smoothly Is it possible to...

I thought it better to discuss here than huge comment chains
I already answered the question with my thoughts on that.
I think benchmark questions should be allowed to stand.
What are your thought on the comments on my answer?
I think it's important that questions be on topic, answerable, and useful
It's difficult to draw a line between "Is the Raspi fast enough to render video?" to "Is the Raspi fast enough to handle DHCP for a network of 1000 users?"
Ok let me throw a spanner in the works here - "If DOOM 3 was ported to the Pi, what would its frame rate be?" :-)
In theory that is answerable.
So we wait and answer it in 30 years when DOOM 3 is released and ported?
I see where you're coming from
I guess the question has to be relevant to a large audience?
15:10
It's more that to answer it requires a large development project
So we can only accept easy questions? :P
Does this title make sense?
> Is it possible to immersively cool a device?
Yes (well I think I understood it)
I think it sounds weirder than the original...
> Is it possible to cool a device by immersion?
15:17
I don't know why, but a device just sounds weird to me...
> Is it possible to cool a Raspberry Pi by immersion?
Si.
I like that one better but I think people would disagree with me.
I think it's called "Liquid submersion cooling"
rather than immersion
Computer cooling is required to remove the waste heat produced by computer components, to keep components within permissible operating temperature limits. Components that are susceptible to temporary malfunction or permanent failure if overheated include integrated circuits such as CPUs, chipset, graphics cards, and hard disk drives. Components are often designed to generate as little heat as possible, and computers and operating systems may be designed to reduce power consumption and consequent heating according to workload, but more heat may still be produced than can be removed wi...
> Is it possible to liquid submersion cool my Raspberry Pi?
I can't think of a way to remove the noun from the sentence
I'm just going to leave it.
I have to leave for Drill Practice.
I probably won't be back on until tomorrow though.
Bye.
Seeya!
15:49
@Tibor Does building the toolchain seriously take 45 minutes?
16:09
Give or take.
I as building on a virtual machine, so it may not be completely accurate.
It's been 25 minutes so far

Hi
I just wanted to stop by before I have to go in abou 20 minutes.
Ah, you are tasked with answering an unanswered question in that time.
Really?
Which one?
Any will do :)
:P
Toughy.
I don't have a RPi yet so...
Let's see...
17:38
Aww, poor chaps without pies.
I know right?
Mine is in a nice Raspberry shaped case. It looks so pretty.
I haven't even gotten the email saying OMG WE HAVE RPIS HURRY!!!!
@Jivings Link?
Haha, I actually had a spare that I gave to a friend.
From ebay
Eh. I'll probably get a ModMyPi or whatever that link was that someone posted yesterday...
17:41
Yeah, those are cool.
Ikr? =P
What?
Ikr = I know right?
Ah.
I wanted to be able to see the pi though. Do they have transparent ones?
The link that was posted did... Let me see if I can find it...
17:44
Yeah, that's nice.
Si.
Well I have to go to OK now.
Bye! =D
See you.
18:12
@AlexChamberlain nice job with the sudo question
18:43
@SteveRobillard Thanks
19:09
Holy cow, you guys've been active :D
:D
19:41
I hate the rep cap :(
20:02
We're all suffering!
I'm not

3 hours later…
22:53
At last I've had one of my questions answered :-)
23:20

A: How can I determine the current firmware version number?

Steve RobillardYou can check the GPU's firmware version by entering the following on the commnad line: /opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd version

This one is interesting (though it's from StackOverflow, not raspberry-pi):

Q: Cross-compiling Node.js for ARM6 (Raspberry Pi)

Adam M-WI'm trying to get node.js v0.7.9 to compile for the raspberry pi, but as node and v8 are quite large, I'm hoping to be able to cross-compile on another more powerful PC.
