It is hard enough to say how long anything lasts, even a hard drive or something where it is easier to measure "wear and tear"
I don't think it is a bad reason - we beta testers are here partly to seed the site with good example questions/answers (which will influence what other users post later)
How about now
@finnw That is a different reason. =P
Yes, but "it will hurt the beta stats" is not a reason for it being a bad question
Unanswered questions are harmful, so are nonspecific answers
22:02
That is better. Non specific to Rpi but better
the "can I estimate the lifetime" part makes it relevant and maintains, at least partially, some of the spirit of the question. that way if there's an answer to it it's still open
(or does noone agree with me?)
Nonspecific answers are harmful, as are questions that have no good answer. Just because a question doesn't have an answer right away doesn't mean it can't have a good answer.
Case and point:
No but any answer that is posted today will be a bad one, and almost any answer will collect upvotes if it sits there long enough, and it will beat the good answer just by being posted months earlier
You're describing a problem with the system, not the question.
22:05
I think as it stands, @jandjorgensen 's question is now acceptable.
That's true, but I am more interested in the site succeeding than getting an answer to that particular question
I'm going to throw a rifle in the air fancy-like.
Bye.
I'm more interested in a good site succeeding than a site succeeding because it had good statistics.
Bye, @duns
Er, @dunsmoreb

Q: Should you accept the best answer for problems that cant be solved yet?

JenkoMany questions I've asked can't be solved in the near future, and since its become so important to accept answers (courtesy the accept rate), should I just accept any good answer even though the problem isn't solved by it?

Not exactly an answer, but a related idea.
Yes very relevant
Trouble is, inactive questions get forgotten and eventually deleted or duplicated
Occasionally someone finds it months later and posts a good answer, but more likely they will answer a later duplicate instead
so the original does not contribute anything in the end
That's what merging is for, though.
22:13
Is anyone able to merge yet? I have not been at beta stage on an SE site before
Mods can.
merging depends on at least 5 users seeing both questions and knowing that they are equivalent. Again this is biased towards active questions
Well, if 4 people voted to close mine, there are 5 people who will see a new one. Additionally, all it takes is one flag and a moderator.
I understand your concern, but "The system may mess things up" isn't a reason it's a bad question. Questions should only be closed if they are bad, especially in the beta stage. If this question will ever be a good one, it belongs in the beta.
"It might pop up later" is support for keeping it, not closing it.
Back.
@ShaneHudson Why are your icons different?
@jandjorgensen, btw I prefer the original to the edit. You are now asking two things if I understand it right, 1. How to predict how long the SD card will take to wear out, 2. How to detect that it has worn out
22:20
@finnw That is what I thought. The question seemed kinda overwhelming.
and though I think nobody will know the answer to #1, it is good that it was focused on one thing
@dunsmoreb my avatar you mean?
@ShaneHudson Si.
I don't like how the illustration looks when it is small. I like it large though (like on www.shanehudson.net) :)
So would "Is there a way to estimate the lifetime?" relevant without the "how can I tell when to switch?"
because the lifetime estimation is relevant, even if the answer is no
22:22
It is not relevant to the raspberry pi... perhaps super user or something like that though.
As I've addressed previously, the use case of an SD card as the primary drive for an OS is a unique one. It's quite relevant to the raspberry pi. What about the use case of implementing a device and leaving it alone to run for a few years?
@jandjorgensen I suggested an edit for your question that I thing cleans it up.
@jandjorgensen I agree with that part
Okay guys. Let's use the Meta.

Q: Raspberry Pi itself vs. specific OS issues

TiborWe should discuss what to consider a valid question for this site. We can expect many questions that are not Raspberry Pi-specific at all but rather specific to Linux itself or a particular piece of software. Should we direct them to other Stack Exchange sites or answer the question here?

> As long as what they're doing is done on the Raspberry Pi, it's on-topic.
That works
22:24
The SD card relates to what you're doing on the Raspberry Pi, ergo it's on-topic.
Heh, one of my questions is referenced there
for a different reason...
Maybe phrasing the question in a way like: What is the effect on the SD card when being used as the main drive to run the Raspberry Pi and how does this effect the longevity of the card?
@ShaneHudson What?
That is just confusing and probably would scare off new users.
fair enough
Yeah, and ultimately it doesn't provide a means for a useful answer, which was part of the problem with the original question.

Q: Console unusable after running SDL app; How to recover without rebooting?

finnwWhen attempting to run some SDL-based programs (e.g. prboom, dosbox) from the console, the screen locks up; It just goes black, and remains black until you reboot, even if you kill the process that failed to initialize. This is in contrast with the hello_video and hello_triangle demos which retu...

@finnw That question is now on-topic.
That one may or may not be Pi-specific. I will not know that until I know the answer
I posted it here because I suspect the answer may involve dispmanx
> As long as what they're doing is done on the Raspberry Pi, it's on-topic.
Yeah, the tricky thing is sometimes the answer may be RPi specific, even if the question isn't originally
That is a pretty interesting question, think I shall have to watch that one!
22:31
I made some changes to the proposed FAQ. Tell me what you think.
2
A: What should the FAQ contain?

jandjorgensenQuestions about the following things are on-topic: The Raspberry Pi hardware. Raspberry Pi peripherals. Software used on the Raspberry Pi. Questions about the following things are off-topic: The ordering and/or purchasing of the Raspberry Pi. Any accessories relating to appearance.

@jandjorgensen, as hard as I think it is, I really would like to know the answer to your SD card question
See, and that's why I think it's an important question. It's ultimately useful.
@dunsmoreb added the word "exclusively." Not a bad idea IMO, but we'll see what others have to say
Ok you've convinced me that question should stay
@finnw Awesome.
Thanks for bringing me into the discussion!
22:36
Who knows, it might actually prompt someone to research it
OTOH I don't think your emulation question will prompt anyone to develop an emulator :-)
Takes a step away... Starts running...
There are a number of solutions out there running an emulator on Windows. I got one working, I just can't find a good source right now
wow, that's way better than the one i used
I assume it cannot emulate dispmanx/GLES yet? Surely nobody would have had time to implement them yet?
22:40
@finnw Probably not.
Posted a question... though maybe I should have asked here in chat since it is not a very useful question

Q: What are the two long components on the board?

Shane HudsonOn the Raspberry Pi there are two components about an inch long, one next to the ethernet and one next to the logo. I have been wondering since I received the device what these components are?

See!
You have a different icon!
Haha that is strange. Yeah that one is my old one (my "brand") whereas this new one is a photo of me! Strange the old one shows up sometimes though
@ShaneHudson those are connectors, they have a name but I cannot remember it
one is for a camera, the other for a touchscreen
ah, you have an answer
Yeah thanks :) I always thought the camera/display went on the JTAG pins
22:49
@ShaneHudson I added a picture! =D
Hadn't noticed the lids lift up
Heh nice one :)
Add the picture! =D
Ya! =D
I have!
I'll vote for your question in an hour.
When I can vote again.
Heh thanks, Got my student badge :D lol
22:53
=P
Right I best be going to bed, moving home tomorrow. Goodnight, nice to meet you all!
@ShaneHudson Goodnight!
Don't let the bed bugs bite! =D
Haha :p
I'm working on a "prototype" logo =P
=P
Bamn!

A: What should the logo look like?

dunsmorebHow about a Raspberry in the middle of a pie? Kinda like pictionary!

@finnw @jandjorgensen What do you guys think?
Not sure if it is supposed to be humorous...
23:09
I'd say 50/50 =P
But I don't think the site logo should use the official logo as part of a larger picture - we should use the official logo as-is, or (if the foundation does not allow it) something unrelated
Was this question discussed earlier? raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/q/200/54
I think it is "not constructive"
though it's not clear from the stackexchange FAQ

Q: Is there a collection of teaching materials?

JivingsIs there anywhere that I can find a collection of teaching materials for the Raspberry Pi? I would hope this could include details such as: Flashing the SD card. Installing the basic OS. Programming the GPIO. Software recommendations for teaching programming skills. Lesson plans or anything...

A: What Stack Overflow is Not

Don't we get a designer at the end of beta?
In the past they have held contests for users to submit a logo (winner gets a stackexchange T-shirt or similar)
@dunsmoreb Stack Exchange has Jin doing most of the work for the site AFAIK. blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/07/…
@bmike Cool.

A: Who designs the logos for Area 51 proposals?

David FullertonDuring beta, the site will have a generic "beta" design and logo. Towards the end of beta, users of the site will vote on a logo and name for the site. From Joel's original blog post on Stack Exchange 2.0: During the open beta, the site will be open to the public at a temporary domain n...

Just a quick heads up for those looking for a case I just got an email that the Pi case is back in stock at adafruit adafruit.com/products/859 mine should be here in a few days and I will let you know my thoughts when it does.
@SteveRobillard I'm probably going to get a ModMyPi: modmypi.com
