@Dennis Wait, quartata withdrew? So we're having a primary to select ten candidates out of ten running? :/
Essentially.
Lovely.
Meh, consider it a good way to gauge the interest in each candidate
using Requests

response = Requests.get("https://codegolf.stackexchange.com/election")

statuscode(response) < 300 || error("AHHH BAD REQUEST IS BAD")

pagetext = readall(response)

users = matchall(r"user-details\">\s*<a href=\"[^\"]+\">\K[^<]+", pagetext)
scores = matchall(r"vote-count-post\">\K-?\d+", pagetext)

length(users) == length(scores) || error("AHHH BAD REGEX IS BAD")

for (candidate, votecount) in sort(collect(zip(users, scores)))
    candidate = replace(candidate, r"&#\d+;", i -> Char(parse(Int, i[3:end-1])))
@Undo I also made a thing!
> error("AHHH BAD REGEX IS BAD")
00:06
Yours is a lot cooler
nice
Thanks :P
@AlexA. I feel like I know what language this is in
pyyyyython? Maybe?
Julia
00:06
oh, of course.
It should be interesting once the election phase hits and people can only vote for three.
As the person currently in fourth place, I find this less interesting and more... ;-;
@AlexA. as long as you're not MODERATOR_COUNT + 1 place
Haha true...
Even though nobody will be eliminated, I like having the primary because it allows more time for decision (and more time for me to try to sway people).
00:10
I'm really torn, to be honest. I like our current mods, but I also voted for Phi in the protem "election" >_>
00:20
I like the candidate Q&A because it gives me the opportunity, as an outgoing long-time mod, to keep everyone honest. ;-)
Phi is the only non-protem I've voted for so far in the primary
not that it matters ;p
It doesn't matter for elimination purposes but it matters in terms of giving all the candidates time to write up their Q&A answers.
which I believe is important.
Yeah, I definitely wouldn't want the real election to start before answering the questionnaire.
Well we could still have the questionnaire without the primary. It shouldn't be contingent on that anyway imo.
00:23
@PhiNotPi If you're going to fix the spelling of questionnaire, it has 2 Ns.
There. :-)
TIL how to spell questionnaire.
@Geobits The problem is, once people start voting, they are unlikely to revisit. So having all the questionnaires laid out upfront is fairer.
No, I mean still set out the same time frame until election (for the q/a), but dispense with the pointless primary voting.
@Geobits Sure, that would be nice, but that's not how the election mechanics is coded to work. So we work with what we have.
@PhiNotPi The correct way is: 1. Write something vaguely similar. 2. Trigger spell checker. 3. Choose proper spelling.
@Dennis hahaha
Oh no, I'm now in the slowest 50% of respondents.
@Quill That would be me :(
@ChrisJester-Young Oh. For some reason I still have the "just because we've always done it this way doesn't mean it makes sense" junk in my head from hearing it so much :P
now, what to do? read all the other responses or bury my head in the sand? ;-)
00:29
Patiently wait until I finish mine?
read the other responses
@Geobits True, true. ;-)
@MartinBüttner In short, there is no privilege level for "You're exempt from the Be Nice policy". wow - thats good! I wish I'd thought of that one
Wait, I thought there was? Isn't it 100k (or 40k beta)?
00:39
@Geobits the privilege level is variable, you must have more network rep than Jon Skeet to be exempt from the rule
Be Jon Skeet or be nothing
Just be glad it isn't 40k network rep. I'd go crazy on you all.
@AlexA. Go Skeet or go home
hahaha
p.s. That chat message actually took some effort to make that intentionally bad.
Actually, I might not want something that blatantly evil to be attached to me.
00:55
** 2016 Travel Moderator Election ** - The last message was posted 4 days ago.
@PhiNotPi I would think another candidate for worst would be: "After accepting the diamond, I will go through all of my posts and delete the offensive ones, including all references to race, religion, or gender. This will probably reduce my rep by about half, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make."
What is this, popularity golf?
yes?
"After accepting the diamond, I'm gonna do what I wanted it for: deleting the shitty -2 posts I made when I joined the community. then I'm gonna never use it again"
@Dennis When is it not? :P
"I'm probably not going to be around much longer. I just want to go out on top."
01:12
@AlexA. Endorse my special interest group and I'll lobby for you
Dare I ask what your special interest group is?
Free Pie For All
(that's Pie not Pi)
Hm. What would that entail?
And who's going to pay for all of this pie?
As long as it's free, I don't care.
@AlexA. Sp said he would
01:16
Then what would be my role with this special interest group? Just advocate for Sp buying pie for everyone?
I can get behind that. I like pie.
I can also get behind pie.
Just not pi
Is someone willing to bake a pie that's 1.618 times longer than it is wide?
Plot twist: The pie is free in that it can do what it wants, but you still need to pay for it.
But Calvin said you'd be paying for it!
01:18
Sentient pie probably tastes bad.
Open Source Pie?
Free-to-eat pie?
@AlexA. Distribution, logistics, etc. as well
We're going to eat Phi?
@HelkaHomba Sure, I can do that.
@AlexA. I veto this.
01:20
Hey everyone, I officially endorse Calvin's special interest group that advocates free pie for everyone! (Disclaimer: It's not clear at this point whether the pie is free as in speech or free as in beer.)
Or free as in ponies.
01:46
Would you like to endorse my special interest group? I want to change the geometry of space and set the ratio of circumference to diameter of a circle to 1.618.
Disclaimer: it will probably destabilize your atoms.
PieNotPhi, sorry.
Also, it's hard to answer this questionnaire with a migraine. ;-;
Actually, I wouldn't put "eyes tearing up" in the "migraine" category just yet.
It isn't much easier with a cold.
02:11
@DigitalTrauma I finished reading your Q&A. I like many of your points, but of course I disagree with the gung-ho comment pruning you describe in question 4. So, I'll refrain from voting on your post. :-) (Just wanted you to know I've read it, as I do all the answers on that post.)
(BTW, I don't want people to tailor their answers to what I say at all—I'm just one user, with one vote, so it doesn't matter in the big picture. But I like to give feedback when I have feedback to give, so.)
My answer to #1 is really starting to inflate.
@PhiNotPi That's a good thing, right?
@ChrisJester-Young Would you consider code bloat a good thing?
@PhiNotPi No, but I'm hoping in your case it's more like prose than bloat. :-)
It's more like walking through the steps of what I would do, and what I would talk about to each user involved, padded with several possible cases.
02:15
@PhiNotPi Use h3 or h4 to split out the cases. :-)
> There's two big cases that come to mind in which this situation might arise. The most realistic case is probably that some math trick / shortcut / builtin made the challenge much easier than the OP anticipated. A second realistic example would be the OP being surprised by golfing languages and deciding he didn't want them (a rule change that's potentially contrary to site policy).
^ my 2nd paragraph or so
@ChrisJester-Young Thanks for the feedback. Perhaps I should reword this a bit - I certainly don't advocate a gung-ho approach to comment-pruning. I generally would only do this if the comment really is obsolete - e.g. it is a suggestion that has been incorporated into a post (with attribution to the commenter). This is generally how I flag such comments today, and as far as I'm aware I think most, if not all flags have been acted upon by current mods, so I'm not really proposing a radical departure
@DigitalTrauma Yes, that would be a good clarification.
02:31
@ChrisJester-Young Thanks. Done :)
@DigitalTrauma Okay, I've sent you an upvote.

3 hours later…
Just edited in this paragraph:
> The first thing I would like to say is that, I'm super open to discussion about this, so if you want to talk about my answers, please don't hesitate to ping me in chat. I should respond if I'm not sleeping.
@Quill @Geobits since you two have expressed interest in voting for me, I figured it is worth pinging you to see what you think of my questionnaire. (I hope I don't disappoint my voting base!) If you want clarification, or think I'm just plain wrong about something, please don't hesitate to let me know.
I actually like my #10 answer the best.
05:18
A quick skim read confirms my assumption of quality, I'm a bit busy atm, but once I finish work, I'll take a more indepth read and give you some feedback :)
Thanks!
It's literally 1:23AM here, I'm going to catch some sleep and read the fallout in the morning. Bye!
good night

7 hours later…
12:48
@PhiNotPi It looks like Trump retweeted some mean stuff about you. Other than that, not much fallout.
Okay.

4 hours later…
17:11
Has there been any post on mother meta to suggest a change to the election schedule such that the questionnaires are up before the end of the nominations? Can't find anything, but I'd be surprised if no one has complained about that before.
@MartinBüttner That would be a huge improvement so that the primary reflects more accurate community views.
it's even more important when primaries are skipped
Absolutely.
if no one comes up with an existing post within an hour or so, I'll probably write something up
You should ask in TL too. Maybe someone will know.
Heh, Shog is currently in TL so I used the opportunity to ping him. :-P
17:19
Shog has been in here (and still is), too ;)
@Geobits In the last 2 minutes? No.
Nah, but he's in the user list and pingable.
By "in" I mean it in the IRC sense: that they've written a message recently.
(since it's common practice for people to lurk 24/7 on IRC)
Oh, you're an IRCer. Carry on.

@Geobits I'm totally an IRCer. Come join us on #stackoverflow on freenode. ;-)
I'll, uh, get right on that >_>
@Geobits Meh, IRC is a bit quiet today.
@Undo Do you have a script that generates this?
@DigitalTrauma Numerous ones have been posted.
@ChrisJester-Young In this room? I've been following this room fairly carefully, but I could have missed it
17:30
@DigitalTrauma Yep
It's from the console of github.com/undo1/primarymonitor
I (obviously) haven't followed an .SE election this close before. In general, are the primary votes a good indicator of the final outcome?
@DigitalTrauma I placed 3rd in the SO primaries, got 5th in the final election
@Undo Hey, that turned out to be enough in your case. ;-)
...eventually
Jeremy Banks placed 10th in a previous election, got 3rd in the general.
@ChrisJester-Young Eventually :)
@Undo thanks
17:32
@ChrisJester-Young not that he remembers it vividly or anything ;-P
@Undo I think I voted for you :) - as one of the more familiar names
I wish I could vote for Maria Tidal Tug. I miss her :/
Finally found it. Compare the SO primary results (soprimaries.erwaysoftware.com) to the final results (chat.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/27114126#27114126)
It would be fun to get some Nate Silver-style analysis on these elections
@Geobits Well I'm pretty sure I would have voted for bigtoes too ;-)
Anonymous
18:22
I guess I should get around to answering the questionnaire :P
18:53
@Mego If you want to actually get any votes, yes. ;-)
Anonymous
@ChrisJester-Young I've gotten some (primary) votes :P It's hard to type when there's a cat on my keyboard and I'm constantly coughing, though :(
@Mego I mean on Test Chamber 19, not in the previous ones. :-P
mm broiled penguin
what
Anonymous
huhwhat
18:59
..weak response to the Portal reference
Should have done penguin cake instead
19:12
@ChrisJester-Young Doorknob seems to be doing well without having answered the questionnaire. Having said that, as an incumbent, he is definitely a known (good) quantity. I guess the questionnaire is probably more important for non-current-mod candidates
given the relatively small number of votes on the questionnaire questions, compared with actual primary votes, I'm not convinced the questionnaire answers are all that important to most of the electorate
@DigitalTrauma I have the most votes of the questionnaires and I'm almost 100 votes behind Doorknob. So I think you're right. :/
Is there any way to tell how many users have voted in the primary? We can count all votes cast, but this is not accurate as we can vote for as many candidates as we like
Anonymous
Doorknob for PPCG totalitarian dictator
Anonymous
@DigitalTrauma (total_votes)/(current_candidates) should be pretty close
@DigitalTrauma I don't there's an accurate, direct way
As Mego said, votes/candidates is reasonable, as is number of people who have the Caucus badge.
Anonymous
19:20
Ooh good point, I forgot about Caucus
But you get that just for looking at the nominations before any voting begins
So still pretty inaccurate
Anonymous
Once we get to the election phase, we can count constituent badges
Or we can look at the thing that says how many people voted.
@Mego ok, thats good
In the election it specifically says.
Anonymous
19:22
Oops :P
> 2,910 voters were eligible, 0 visited the site during the election, 864 visited the election page, and 0 voted
Those zeros will ++
Man, compared to the other incumbents in the primary, I'm getting rektaroni and cheez-its.
I wonder how it gets 2910
select displayname from Users where reputation >= 150
gives me 2903
Number of users on the site with sufficient reputation
Oh hm
@AlexA. Where did you find that info?
first time I've played with data.SE - I perhaps my query-fu is not up to scratch
Anonymous
SEDE doesn't have fresh data
Anonymous
Its data is usually a few days old
19:25
@Nero Oh hey, you're one of the Computer Graphics mods! :D
@Mego IIRC it only updates on Sundays
@Mego that would explain it
@AlexA. Yep, hi :D
Anonymous
@AlexA. I just had a sundae so it should update now
@Nero Wait a second, you don't have a PPCG account! D:
But it looks like I can't see that information. Maybe you need to have an account on the site to see the information.
Or even be able to vote
19:26
are other diamond users eligible to vote even of they don't have 150 rep?
@Mego lel

I did not expect to have more votes than El'endia :o
@DigitalTrauma Probably...
I don't know for sure though

@DigitalTrauma There's one way to find out - see if Grace Note votes
(actually lel is just lazy lol, kind of like heh is to haha)
@Mego I wonder if employees refrain from voting in elections
Anonymous
@AlexA. I should hope not. Just because they're employees doesn't mean they're not members of the community (just look at Grace Note on Arqade).
That's true.
Finally almost finished with that Q&A...
19:44
@AlexA. That seems like a terrible laziness shortcut, considering the keyboard positions. Maybe I type weird, though.
@Geobits Not lazy from a physical exertion point of view. More like lazy like too lazy to fully laugh.
Yea, I kinda thought I might be taking that a bit too literally. Went with it anyway :P
Fair enough :P
> I don't always follow through, but when I do, it's with a bad joke.

@Geobits O is next to E! It's on the home row on the left hand, along with the other vowels. :P
19:55
@Geobits to be fair, using right-left-right hand is more comfortable than having to move a finger up and down between the ls and the o.
@MartinBüttner It's right-left-right for me in both cases. ;-)
Ah, Dvorak

A: 2016 Moderator Election Q&A - Questionnaire

Doorknob A new-ish user posts a well-posed challenge that quickly gets many answers. An hour later, they edit in a restriction that invalidates most of the existing answers. An experienced user whose answer was invalidated comments that doing this is bad, and rolls back the edit. The poster ins...
