I saw Kin-Dza-Dza today. A quite different type of sci-fi than I am used to.
18:04
i'd never heard of that. the original or the remake?
The original.
looks like i could watch it on youtube. i might put it on my list.
yes, keep a sci-fi/fantasy list. About 30% of the things I mention are perhaps not worth the time, so just put them on a list and ask me to reconsider them about half a year later :)
18:35
how are you for time these days, Hoh?
18:55
The rest of that part is internet time. Subtract some time for reddit and SE, and you have what I can use for Moonwards. Not a lot, but a little. It is probably a good idea to think about what I should spend it on.
I have enough time to do things. Yeah, the school work takes some, but it is manageable. Spring is coming, so I spend some time cutting down trees and stuff and preparing some vegetables. Of the then remaining 'luxury free time', I choose to spend over half on reading as I have found some interesting stuff and has a huge library available.
trees :)
I never get those two words right.
well, i don't know how complicated or time-consuming it really is, but i wondered if you could get that Commentics service working on the website.
Set up comments, ok.
let me post the link again. commentics.org
maybe it is a lead-in to working with databases.
18:59
Allowing on-site feedback for all the content is probably the end goal, but as a first step having something that works at all is most realistic.
it's nice that you do some gardening.
@Hohmannfan yes, ideally i'd like to scatter comment sections around all the pages, but we'll see. it isn't so important really.
not until we are able to have real user participation
My mother, and especially my grandfather (I live at his place now) are gardening enthusiasts. It is difficult to not become interested.
@kimholder Is it just me, or should the commentics frontpage really have a comment section so people can see it in action directly?
If this is the only form for security I am very worried.
it does have a demo section that i just posted something to
and it automatically pulled my avatar from google
@Hohmannfan is that from the guide?
i really know nothing about security or databases, but to change that database, i think you'd need to be logged on to the server, wouldn't you?
19:12
Also, this: " [...]You can do this in your website control panel". Uhm...
@kimholder I suppose so, obscurification of the webpage is really not what we are trying to do.
Perhaps I should try creating a database first? That is a useful experience anyway.
We have a server, so why not.
for sure. Dreamhost has software installed for that. let's see, what's it called...
and how would you access it...
it's phpMyadmin
is it durin.dreamhost.com or org?
.com
yes, you have access to the forum database, but there is a separate sign-in for phpMyadmin
I am going to try to get used to doing things remote on the server.
Looks like I have to do this over ftp
Looks like the server is Ubuntu :)
:D well, that's the way you like it
19:29
ftp is a very different thing than working with a regular shell-like thingy though. Hmm.
i may need to create a new database and give you access.
I am pretty sure I am never going to learn how to use a website control panel. Way to complicated compared with a shell environment.
WANT: this VERY!
oh... huh, look at that. now you won't have to impersonate me. :)
i never ran across that before.
oh - you are already there
but it is isolated
you can't touch moonward's files from there
i knew i tried to give you that access before and couldn't
do you want me to email you a new password, or do you have it somewhere?
19:46
I have an account? I remember something about that, but I am not sure I figured out how to make use of that.
you weren't checked as a shell user, i've done that now
@kimholder Can I change the password myself afterwards, in that case, how?
[kim wonders if it is really a good idea to tell Hoh how to create a password she can't then check, that gives him shell access on the server...]
:P
You can still remove any powers I have, right?
I am just a little concerned about the sending-passwords-over-email part
yes, that isn't good either.
yeah, i see where i could delete you if something absolutely crazy happened.
19:51
I can give you some simple instructions about how to send it to me using pgp in a few days.
however, in order to create the password, i think you'd have to log on to the account, which is a different password you don't have
what if i write it down and send you an image?
It would work as follows:

1 I send you a public key. There is nothing wrong with people knowing that.
2 You encrypt the password using that key.
3 Now only I can decrypt it, using my private key
ok
also, if you root around, you may find the password you already have
Meh, new password sounds good to me.
20:24

A: Can olivine be used to make glass?

MichaelThe previous answer is not really helpful because you would need huge amounts of CO2 which are not available on the moon. You need 2 moles of CO2 to generate 1 moles of SiO2. You simply do not have that amounts of CO2. Furthermore, assuming you do someone get that CO2, you need to physically sep...

you know, that answer is useful, but i wish so bad he'd respond to the comment
it would be far more useful if i could talk to him about it.
Ready to do this password transfer? This should take no more than ~5 mins. This is going to be step-by-step.
alright
I am going to send you my public key in an email. I can send it over open chat if I want, but the message is a bit too long for it to be convenient.
First step: we are going to install two things:

Gnu privacy guard (GPG)
Gnu privacy assistant (frontend for GPG)

Both are official GNU procjects.

To install them: "sudo apt-get install gpa gnupg2"

**Do not take my word that these programs are what I say they are. Use a search engine to confirm this**
ok... i'll even do the last part just to make you happy... :]
alright, that's done
Ready for the next step? There should be no need for you to generate your own keys or anything, so we can go directly to you creating a message for me:
Launch the front end with "sudo gpa". A window should appear. It may ask you if you want to make your own key. Decline that.
20:32
alright, now what?
If you now have a GUI everything is good. Next: check if you have got an email from me with an attached file.
yeah, i already checked that
i opened it in gedit
Click "keys" in the menu. Select "import key" and select the file I sent you.
ok. next?
Select "windows" in the menu, and go to "clipboard". Write the message.
20:36
how long would you like?
8 characters? 10?
Just the password is fine, it does not really matter.
10 just to say a number
okay, and now?
When you are done, click the envelope with a blue key on it. (it says "encrypt the buffer text" when you hover over it).
Then, select my key in the list in the upper part of the window you get.
The clipboard now changes to something like this:
wow, it even advises that the ownership of the key hasn't been verified. cool.
-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----
20:39
yep, got that now
so, i insert that in an email?
Select it all, paste it to a file, and send it to me.
It is actually short enough to just paste in chat, but maybe SE does some formatting, so an attached file to anemail is probably best.
You are now done!
you should have it now
gee, i should set this up so i can save a few things securely...
So, all these things were for a reason: Somebody could have all the emails and this conversation, and still not have a clue what you sent me.
okay - give me sec - i actually haven't set up the other end
So, I am [email protected], right? The "allow shell access" stuff and new password may take some time to propagate through the interwebs. I am going to try login in after an hour.
This key stuff may look a little too paranoid, but this is actual security. It does not take a lot of time, and doing it once or twice to get comfortable with it can not really hurt in any way.
20:53
nods wisely...
:]
Perhaps I can check if SE does any fancy formatting to the blob.

Nope, posting the message in chat works perfectly fine. No need to bother with emails.
21:32
i'm surprised that isn't too long
perhaps They have exceptions for messages looking like PGP messages? Not surprising

Post very long messages if you want, is looks like!
that's kind of hilarious
Let me see if just the header is enough.
but there is also a formatting thing for doing that anyhow - i just can't remember what it is

ok - so why did i get a thing the other day that my message was too long?

when i copy/pasted that just now it was fine with it
Yes, for me too.
I have written way shorter things than that getting blocked
is the magic simply copy/paste?
No, because I often write long stuff in an editor and paste it.
21:39
i think i've gotten that message when i've done that too, though

Entire text of the wikipedia article. Something is broken
Are you or I going to write that meta question?
um, it might be covered already, you might want to search
if not, i'm in the middle of brazenly suggesting how to make glass on the moon. But i'll do it later if you are busy.
22:35
@kimholder I got an explanation: Text containing newlines is not considered "too long"
what does 'newlines' mean
Like the end of a line, it is a character.
Line break.
put in a line break and you are good? pff, glad i know that now.
So, shift+enter to continue the rant :)
exactly :D
22:46
A newline takes space just like any other characters, so we should clearly have all our code on one line to improve loading time :P

Hmm. Looks like I can not force a line to continue out of the text box.
i have now started reading a public-domain book called 'Glass Manufacture'
i think i can speed read most of it and get the important things
it looks like glass doesn't actually need to be quenched, it just needs to cool over a few hours, and spend enough time in the temperature range where it 'anneals', so it doesn't have internal stresses due to cooling too fast
and contaminants don't seem to be a big deal. not even of iron.
23:51
it's that book. i'm actually enjoying it. very practical and thorough.
