@Theorem are you from germany ?
@Alex i know someone who studies in Bonn
@DominicMichaelis : nope .
@AlexYoucis : i am quite sad with my situation .
@Theorem Don't be too bummed out man. You'll be amazed at what you'll be able to do. Just apply to a lot of schools--someone will take you.
user19161
I just answered a lovely sets question, yay!
@AlexYoucis : are you sure ? if they see D grade , they will throw my application .
:P
@Theorem What are you doing?
user19161
22:02
@Theorem Stephen Smale had very poor grades.
@Theorem I have never gotten a D, but I have gotten two Cs.
@AlexYoucis It is sad that people think intelligence is measured by grades. I mean, sure, it reflects certain good qualities, but give it a rest.
@PeterTamaroff : wondering if i can get at least in some graduate school .
@Theorem What is a "graduate school"? It is a school to get a MSc or PhD?
@PeterTamaroff And GREs
22:04
@AlexYoucis Graduate Research E_____?
@AlexYoucis : graduate in american sense.
user19161
@PeterTamaroff Graduate Record Exams
@PeterTamaroff ; graduate in american sense .
@Theorem Uh?
@AlexYoucis : what do students do , they they have D grade but want to do Phd ? do u think there is a way ?
22:05
@PeterTamaroff Grad Record Exams. It's the grad school version of SATs
@Theorem yes, I do. As long as it's not in math classes.
user19161
@PeterTamaroff The GRE is actually pretty simple.
@JasperLoy Says you haha
@AlexYoucis : i have exactly that problem , in math classes i have bad grade . but i want to do maths :P
@Theorem If you're getting Ds in math classes, that might be a hard sell then. Once again, I'd talk to your math advisors who will surely have more useful advice than I.
user19161
@AlexYoucis Well, I am sure you find it simple. I don't mean I find it simple, but I think it is for a good student.
22:07
did he just solve the basel problem math.stackexchange.com/a/325883/58512 ??
@JasperLoy Define simple? I'm not good at doing timed calc computations.
@AlexYoucis IIRC, SATs are not great indicators of academic performance.
user19161
@AlexYoucis Simple means easier than Berkeley prelims lol.
user19161
@PeterTamaroff SATs are simple too.
@PeterTamaroff THey aren't Neither are the GREs
22:08
@JasperLoy Whutevs.
@JasperLoy I just killed the Maryland algebra and analysis qual which are harder than the Berkeley prelims (because they are quals and not prelims) and I still am not very good at GREs.
@user58512 so many calculation, i think i am to lazy to check i will believe it for now :D
user19161
@AlexYoucis Oh OK. I might take the GREs in a couple of years if I apply to grad school. I will remember what you said.
@JasperLoy They're not hard just very annoying. they are like the SATs--they are studyable tests. There will be kids who study for the GREs for like 6 months before the exam and get 890 and there will be smart kids who don't study at all who get like 780. On paper, at first glance, the first person is better, but only because they studied more.
user19161
@AlexYoucis Also depends on whether you are good at exams in general, some people get anxious etc.
user19161
22:15
@AlexYoucis Actually I find the Berkeley prelims quite hard!
@JasperLoy What level are you?
user19161
@AlexYoucis Me? Well finished undergrad, but not touched math for years haha!
user19161
I guess it will be alright after I do some revision.
user19161
1200 points to godly powers.
@JasperLoy
> I happened to be using Internet Explorer (please don't judge me, I'm just evading StayFocusd on Chrome...)
- Zev
user19161
22:26
@user58512 Yes, have you decided your username?
HHAHAHA
why not zoidberg?
user19161
HAHAHAHAHA
user19161
@user58512 I suggest you use LOL for your username, lol.
Zev is addicted to MSE, so installed "StayFocusd" to stop him going on it too much... then started using IE to get past it
22:50
hello guys..
@anon Dawg.
could any one of you pls help in explaning "expected value of a random variable"
here's the link to my question math.stackexchange.com/questions/325895/…. pls somebody help me.
23:06
I wonder if I should give it to one of the answer 9even though neither really helps me)
user19161
23:30
@user58512 You should ask for a refund, lol
