He also suffers from an apparent lack of humor.
@JasperLoy I just find you very funny =)
user19161
Ba Ba Black Sheep, Twinkle Twinkle Little stars, ABCDEFG all have the same tune!
user19161
@N3buchadnezzar Thanks, and don't drink too much!
Could you please be less preachy?
A broke, bloke whose live is a joke, Jasper Loy bringing the joy, oh boy!
user19161
00:01
@AsafKaragila Just trying to make the world a better place. There is too much evil and suffering already.
@JasperLoy I think much of the evil things comes from Asaf anyways
@N3buchadnezzar It should have been: "A broke, bloke whose life is a joke, Jasper Loy bringing the joy, oh boy!". Right?
Fixed =)
user19161
But if you guys wait a few years, I will reveal the secret.
@JasperLoy Yeah? Well make it better with actions, not words online. Go to the streets and preach to alcoholics. See what happens then. Telling people online that bunch of crap is not just annoying but it is also condescending.
00:03
@AsafKaragila Telling people online makes me feel better!
If you want to alleviate suffering, go to Africa and help starving people, or those inflicted with AIDS and whatnots.
@N3buchadnezzar Of course, but you're a Norwegian satanist. :-P
suddenly i feel a chill
user19161
You know what is funny about this room? Not only are many messages deleted, many stars are removed.
@JasperLoy What is not funny is that it is Asaf removing them!
some people don't appreciate the beauty of astrology
00:04
I didn't remove any stars. Feel free to feel that I'm a censor, I don't really care.
:3679798
The New York $\times$ Headline: "whatnot" gets its plural form "whatnots".
@KannappanSampath It got that form a long time ago, little buddy.
@AsafKaragila i don't care that you don't care
Some people don`t appreciate the beauty of surprise endoscopy
00:05
@DavidWheeler Now that's just not true! :-)
user19161
@AsafKaragila I wanted to do that in the past but not now because of the unexpected events in my own life.
@JasperLoy Fine. Sit in a suicide hotline in your area, do something useful to people which seek help.
"When you insist that you don't care, it means the other way around." ~Gigli, the philosopher
what isn't true...that you don't care, or that i don't care?
00:07
and in this corner...
@DavidWheeler This room is filled with people that care
@N3buchadnezzar Care about booze?
i care deeply about...oh darn, i forgot
@AsafKaragila Suicide hotline: No, no, you have to remove the safety first. Then pull the trigger
2
@N3buchadnezzar "Make sure that the rope is long enough, otherwise you'll just choke to death and it ain't pleasant."
00:09
i am depressed...i'm about to get banned on physics forums
I seem to detect a lot of clenched teeth here ... "Don't you like my husband's jokes?" asked Grace. "That's because they're not very funny. But my husband is cheerfully determined to keep laughing through all this so he doesn't get angry with you and kill you with his bare hands."
@DavidWheeler Why, if I may ask?
i'm "too helpful"
@DavidWheeler But it's physics... the only reason to go there is trolling! :-P
@DavidWheeler I got that too! I do not like that forum!
The moderator cencored my answer!
Death to all of them, bring forth the nails and stakes!
00:10
@DavidWheeler What??? What does that mean?
@DavidWheeler Now that is an attitude for a suicide hotline!
@KannappanSampath You answer people instead of posting vage, and oblique hints
i understand their concerns about "not giving people answers to homework" and helping them cheat. i'm not in favor of cheating
@AsafKaragila Suicide hotline: Give me your address, I will be right over with a bucket and some acid.
@N3buchadnezzar Oh! Got it! Thank you.
00:11
but if someone already HAS the answer, and asks for constructive criticism....well apparently teling them (1)(1) = ? (mod n) is ok, but telling them (1)(1) = 1 mod n, is forbidden
Mmmm... acid bath. Best suicide: overdose of heroin into an acid bath. "Gone gone without a trace..."
i didn't realize common math stuff was a closely guarded secret
3
@N3buchadnezzar Yeah! I love that guy! I also like his "Faen!" video.
00:13
Oh, I thought you were talking about physics.SE.
i have no complaints about SE sites
@DavidWheeler I am going to start answer questions there by referring to obscure mathematical books and articles, this way it is impossible to be to helpful!
@N3buchadnezzar FAEN!
How do one post links like that?

oh, you meant sulfuric acid. my bad.
SE >>> PF
Mainly because of Arturo
well i like to talk about math...but...i have this problem, see. most people are either a)complete idiots or b)savants...and i can't carry a tune with either one
@DavidWheeler You forgot c) drunk
$b \cap $c is ok, $a \cap $ c, not so much....
00:26
Well. You guys iron out the details, I'm going to try and get some sleep before the excruciatingly long and tiresome day tomorrow, in which I am going to have to try and find a way to save my degree.
you can do it
@DavidWheeler What about $a \cap c \cap c \cap d$?
@AsafKaragila You go girl!
Of course I can. It's just going to be very hard and very unpleasant.
I'm seriously considering flagging that...
Oh look, people flagging it already!
00:30
@AsafKaragila Flagging what?
Yes, now when Jasper sees that he'll flip out because he wouldn't know what we wrote there!
we didn't have mods. so, no one flagged anything.
@KannappanSampath There was a flag.
@AsafKaragila missed the fun then. never mind!
@KannappanSampath Just wait, N3buchadnezzar is bound to say something highly offensive again real soon! :-P
00:33
I already told you to not talk about what you don't know. That's really something to cry for.
Fun is to make people angry and flag their messages, it suits you well.
Well, I'm outta here. Bye.
@Gigili Well, I understand what you mean. I don't provoke people here. You may have to revoke that message.
@AsafKaragila Bye Asaf.
@Gigili Further, you're now provoking me.
(I am composed all the time over here! Try and succeed provoking me thereby getting a message you can flag. :-))
are the g's hard or soft Gigili?
user19161
I leave for a while and there is a flag?
@DavidWheeler Whichever you find easier to pronounce
00:40
i find "silent g" easiest to pronounce, but then the remainder iili, is a bit problemmatic
user19161
I can see the blue bar beside flagged stuff because of my SE-10k powers.
@DavidWheeler Don't tell me you let someone know the secret mathshake
@DavidWheeler What about "hoi"?
user19161
@AsafKaragila I won't flip out because I am not wearing any flippers.
00:41
And, you cannot demand me to do something. Always you can request people to do something but not (NEVER) demand something from them. I am serious about this. @Gigili
@JasperLoy I understand N3buchadnezzar's message was flagged. But, I hope he is not facing any suspension.
user19161
OK @gigili and @kan relax. I don't know what happened but you guys calm down...
user19161
@KannappanSampath Don't worry too much about that, it's at most 30 min. I got suspended form chat once too because of a very silly thing.
I'm relaxed, what makes you think I am not @JasperLoy?
@JasperLoy What, when, and why?
user19161
Anyway I think that if A has a problem with B A should talk to B about it rather than flagging. Talking solves the root cause of the problem, not flagging.
00:45
(If you think, you can share)
@JasperLoy 30 minutes! How did you survive this?
user19161
@KannappanSampath Well, it's so silly that I don't even wanna mention it :-)
@JasperLoy In this case the problem was not anything between persons, it was just a tone that was inappropriate for the room in general.
@JasperLoy That's what highly educated people think, don't expect everyone to understand that.
user19161
@DavidWallace Easy, I am NOT addicted to chat. I can leave anytime.
00:46
@JasperLoy I don't think that's necessarily true. If someone is deliberately being obnoxious, just shutting them off can be better than getting into an argument about it.
You see, once again, I see rude comments coming up!
user19161
Hmm I am trying to read between the lines here...
@Gigili Hehe, I'm clearly not highly educated enough.
--highly educated people--?
user19161
The best is for A and B to try to make up but sometimes that is not the solution.
00:49
@all Does anyone know how do people know that a user has not registered his/her accounts?
@DavidWallace Of course you are.
user19161
@KannappanSampath I think you can see from the profile.
user19161
It says "unregistered" I think.
@KannappanSampath There's an "(unregistered)" next to the user name on the profile page of unregistered users.
Let me give an example. I flagged a comment recently, I think on SO (or it might have been Progs) that was just a personal attack, not relevant to the question. The mod removed it in seconds. There would have been nothing to gain by getting into a debate about why the person was making a personal attack.
00:50
@Henning @Jasper Thanks both of you.
user19161
@kan By the way I wanna ask you. What does "gundu" mean to you?
user19161
Does it refer to a bald man in some Indian language?
@JasperLoy "fat". It could also mean "bomb in a different context.
user19161
@KannappanSampath Oh dear, another Indian guy told me it meant bald. I thought it meant idiot.
Please understand that there are dozens of Indian languages.
00:52
@DavidWallace Something similar happened to me some days ago, someone flagged my message. But I didn't regret it.
(or could mean something made out of metal, small and spherical)
I shall be impressed if KannappanSampath knows all of them.
"gundu" has clearly a Dravidian flavour to it.
user19161
Hindi has many speakers according to stats.
user19161
And of course Chinese too.
00:54
And, the Dravidian languages are Tamil (my mother tongue), Telugu, Malayalam.
Right, but if it has a Dravidian flavour, then we probably just need to consider Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayam. The others don't have many speakers.
JINX
(among other minor languages)
user19161
@KannappanSampath Does the "fat" have a connotation of "idiot" in a humorous way?
Delayed jinx.
@JasperLoy Well It depends. It is usually used as term for referring someone who is fat.
user19161
00:57
@KannappanSampath OK thanks. By the way I love Indian movies! The dance, the music, the fighting...
@DavidWallace I am impressed by your knowledge of Indian languages.
@KannappanSampath Kind of you to say so. But I really don't know anything. I can't communicate in any Indian language (either Dravidian or Indic).
@JasperLoy Huh? I'd say you must try and listen to Carnatic Music.
Actually, KannappanSampath, can I ask you a (kind of) related question?
user19161
Oh yes everyone should check out the new interface on the SE network pages.
01:00
New interface? I don't see no new interfaces.
@DavidWallace Yes, but I would like to tell you, I am not offended by your using shorter version of my name. (I know you'd find it harder to type in all of that!)
user19161
Well, go to stackexchange.com and see the various tabs there.
My question (and I do hope it's not an offensive one) - If I don't know whether somebody is Sri Lankan or Indian, is it OK for me to describe them as a Desi? Or is it inappropriate for a non-Desi such as myself to use that word?
user19161
@KannappanSampath Well, people use the first three letters for pinging anyway. It's common SE practice.
Kan/Kannappan are in vogue! @DavidWallace
user19161
01:02
@KannappanSampath Kan sounds like an affectionate way of saying Kannappan!
@DavidWallace Yes I foresee no issues with such a usage.
@JasperLoy Interesting.
@JasperLoy :-)
@KannappanSampath Thanks. I've never been quite sure whether it's OK.
user19161
@DavidWallace Also such opinions may vary from native to native.
user19161
01:03
Just saying in general for things like that.
Why did my laptop become so dim? :/
user19161
@KannappanSampath Maybe you are on battery power saving mode?
user19161
GNOME 3 has this bug where backlight brightness cannot be adjusted easily.
Speaking of backlight, keyboard backlight is such a wonderful feature.
user19161
Each time you retart the brightness goes to maximum on many machines so you need some script.
user19161
01:05
@Gigili Only for typing in darkness.
user19161
But even in darkness I think backlight is good enough.
I would like a backlit keyboard.
It is not good here. I cannot see given that I wear spectacles. I'll be AFK till I restart this machine.
We had a power outage here a few days ago. I was working on my laptop, but I couldn't see the keys. I was fine to type letters, as I can touch-type, but I kept messing up Delete/Home/End/Page-Down.
user19161
Also some smaller laptops have slightly different arrangement of some keys so I mess up too.
user19161
01:08
I wonder if desktops will be replaced by laptops in 10 years time.
user19161
Portability is the winning factor here.
Whoa, 20k.
In the end, I fetched some candles. Yes, I see no point in having a monolithic slab on one's desk.
@Gigili which is of course a total across several sites.
I see, mine is only 8k.
@DavidWallace That's why keyboard backlight is wonderful. VAIO rocks.
I usually type in darkness as I'm a night owl.
user19161
I know Mahnax's Mac laptop has keyboard light.
01:12
I am back, FWIW.
user19161
I only recently learned the meaning of ROFL.
@JasperLoy Don't think so. I want the monitor(s) and keyboard I work on most of my time to be significantly larger than portable.
@HenningMakholm but you can leave them on your desk, along with a docking station, and take your laptop with you.
Yeah, but then what's the point?
I would have to reconfigure everything to fit the smaller laptop monitor anyway -- having it as a separate device makes just as much sense.
I like to work on the train to and from my place of employ.
but if I'm at home, I prefer a proper keyboard and large screen.
01:17
I work on the bicycle to and from my place of employment. But only by thinking about problems. Actually typing and reading stuff would hardly be safe.
I'm off to bed, good night.
Good night. Nice talking to you, @Gigili.
@DavidWallace Do you do Mathematics, if I may ask?
Not recently. I am a Java programmer / software designer by trade. But I do hold an Honours Degree in Maths (completed in 1991) and an IMO silver medal (1988).
01:29
@DavidWallace Amazing.
I have never had the opportunity as a kind to be a part of Contests in Math. :/
Not especially. I haven't had to do any maths for so long, I'm completely rusty at some of the hard stuff.
I was lucky, and in the right place at the right time.
The first year that New Zealand sent a team to the International Mathematical Olympiad just happened to be my last year at high school.
what is IMO?
@DavidWheeler as per my previous comment.
too slow on the draw...pfft the vagaries of age
@DavidWheeler It's a prestigious competiton in Mathematical Problem Solving. YOu have to be under 20 to enter, and not enrolled at any tertiary institution.
Each country can send a team of up to 6 kids.
01:32
You might be interested in Contest Math. To keep it going, I'd like to point you to Math Reflections, a journal dedicated to problem solving.
olympiad..i get it...the problems are often re-published as "challenge questions"
(MR--only published online)
It consists of two 4.5 hour exams, with three questions each. Full marks for a question is 7/7, so the maximum possible is 42 per kid; or 252 per country.
kudos for doing so well, and you wound up in java after all that?
01:34
Thanks, David. Umm, yeah, funny how life changes as you age.
I think I will need to order something from www.penisland.net soon
@N3buchadnezzar Did you have an accident of some kind?
pheeling phallic are you?
No, just in dire need of some pens.
01:35
(Yes, the site is actually about pens)
got it, an island
kind of takes all the fun out of it
What about www.expertsexchange.com ?
@N3buchadnezzar yeah, and I don't think they realised it either.
@N3buchadnezzar I am sorry to ask, but were you placed under suspension? (Curious!)
@KannappanSampath Indeed, this site can not handle the amount of manliness I posses
01:40
Cool!
Kid wants to play. AFK for a while.
@KannappanSampath Being away from the site allowed me to do this though
@N3buchadnezzar Looks cute. Geogebra?
...
@KannappanSampath I am dissapoint, really think I would use that?
Tikz ofcourse!
:p
@N3buchadnezzar Oh, Tikz!!
So whore presents and expert sex change are fine, but power genitalia is somehow flag-worthy? Ain't this the math room? Where's the logic?
01:50
Hi @RegDwight. Welcome to this room!
Usually, flags attract immediate mod attention, no?
Depends on who's awake and who isn't.
Also depends on who can be bothered.
:-) This room has been crazy for sometime!
My home is the Incomprehensible Room. Trust me, you can't get to their levels of crazy.
01:55
@RegDwightѬſ道 Oh, I see. :-)
Looks like there are two outstanding flags from this room, as I see.
If you still see them, that's due to caching.
Them's gone.
Does actually getting kicked out require a moderator action, or is it enough that sufficiently many 10k peons click on the flags?
I think the threshold is around five. Then you get auto-suspended.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Yes!
They have been marked as invalid? @RegDwight
It would appear so, yes.
02:04
@Henninng did you see the call for the votes?
02:15
@KannappanSampath Yes, but only after I'd voted already.
Seems to be a slow night.
02:26
did i miss sum drama?
@DavidWheeler Looks like someone flagged one of N3b's funny website names and RegDwight-iotifiedBigYus-longS-path came by to shake his head at the flag, nothing more.
ah, you glossed right over the math pun, too
02:41
Apparently yes. And I also seemed to have missed that the last character in RegD's username is not any random path but Tao, the Way. Now I wonder whether there is any hidden meaning in the first one too.
03:10
I'm palindromic again :-)
@HenningMakholm Isn't $\tau=6.2831853...$? :-)
Hey guys
Does anyone know how to show
whenever we have an expression for the power sums in terms of the elementary symmetric poylnomials
the coefficient of $s_n$ in $p_n$ is always $(-1)^{n-1}n$?
i'd like half a slice of tau, please
03:37
@DavidWheeler :-)
@robjohn Do you know of a way to prove the statement on power sums?
@BenjaminLim yes, but I am just about to go to dinner. I would point you to the proof on my website but it is down right now :-(
@robjohn What is your website maybe when it is up I can visit it
@BenjaminLim take a look at this page and look up Newton-Girard on Google.
I've seen that page
03:48
If you still have questions when I get back, I will be glad to talk to you then.
Yeah actually it should follow from Newton's identities...

Q: how do I find the prime power decomposition of this number?

RaynosI have sat for about 8 hours doing trial and error and I have tried all combinations of different prime numbers but I am totally stuck.. I know that prime power decomposition is suppose to be prime number to the power of integers and their product gives you the original number... but I am asked ...

lmao @ someone pointing out it's an rsa num over half an hour later
@BenjaminLim The proof is on Wikipedia.
It's a rather simple generating function argument.
@anon Ok thanks.
Maybe the teacher was hoping one of the students would factor it, and he (the teacher) could bag the $75000.
that would have been hilarious. (but no, it was a cruel joke)
05:21
Even crueler because the OP apparently still doesn't understand how hopeless the task is.
I'm amazed that someone would spend nine hours doing this.
Indeed. Should one laugh or cry?
Yes, that is incredible. I can barely focus on a difficult problem for 20 minutes without switching tabs or deciding it's food time.
Good to have an explicit answer. Here, have a non-upvote. :-)
05:38
It's a bit sad to see the question downvoted. Not sure if "little or no research effort" is quite as applicable if the OP has no clue what they're doing, has never heard of RSA, knows so little about the hardness of factoring, etc.
Hello guys.
(I've lol'd at that RSA decomposition question)
That professor seems like a fun guy.
05:55
@DylanMoreland Perhaps he's trying to recreate the Dantzig unsolved-homework-assignment story.
@anon It's at +4/-4 now.
Okay, sleepy time. See ya.

Hey all
today i finally understood the basics in convergence of Fourier series
@KannappanSampath Thanks! It's been answered already : )
@Kannappan : I can't belive the Geogebra question is still not closed. A lot of people are on holiday i guess !
10:39
@MattN Holy, there are 5 answers I did not see! :/
@KannappanSampath : )
@Matt Did you the Geogebra question that has to be migrated?
@KannappanSampath Just now.
11:13
Hello
hi @user
On math.stackexchange, How could I use \
\iffalse and \fi?
for posting
Hi, @Rajest,
It is strange, I cannot see the photo of users.
If the pics you see are broken icons you might try refreshing. I'm not sure if mathjax can even parse things like \iffalse or \fi.
11:29
Ok, @anon, thank you. Half a month ago, there is no problem with icons.
was no problem
