hello
Is there anyone available to answer me a question? math.stackexchange.com/questions/105906/…
Does this question is too fundamental?
"too fundamental" does not mean anything, really :D
Mean noboday would answer it ?
the title asks for continuity, the 2nd paragraph says you want to know if E is convex, and what you really want is to find extrema...
Maybe people have trouble understanding what you want?
The second section, which starts with «Is this right???» does not have any words apart from those? What is that supposed to be? Explain what you wrote there, help others help you.
The last part is long, and contains a «please ignore» which I do not know what it refers to.
I don't understand what $H\left(\phi\right)=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{\pi}\arctan\left(\phi\right)$ could possibly mean
(If you want something to be ignored, simple delete it)
04:07
hi, anyone on here
i guess everyone is asleep :)
Haven't seen you in awhile Bullmoose. But I'm always asleep, even when I'm awake.
04:38
Thank you very much. Mariano Suarez
I re-edit it.

1 hour later…
05:45
@anon I like how deceptively simple this equation looks: 3(1-r)+5r = 2(r+1).
I don't follow. It's obviously wrong.
@anon How can you tell?
the constant term on the left is 3, not 2
you don't have to even think about the r's
06:23
@anon Have you seen this obviously wrong video? youtube.com/watch?v=tGCBTzObWtw
nope, never seen it before
@anon I have tried to get it removed several times as spam with misleading information but it's still there :-(
But it's not spam. I can't support efforts to remove speech from something like you-tube even if it is obviously incorrect.
06:57
Hi Ilya.
Hi Ilya.
07:36
@JM Would you buy something like this? dinodirect.com/…
on mathematica, yup :)
Why, yes... :)
A beautiful shade of blue, I must say...
But doesn't he have the force now? He can do all the things. Like view deleted comments and indefinitely edit chat messages! : D
(on all the sites)
@MattN I am not the sort that lets, uhurm, tools, get to my head... ;)
I didn't mean to imply that. Congratulations!
07:48
Thanks a bunch. :)
@MattN I just said it for reassurance. ;)
Thanks : D
@MattN Better now?
Yes!
See you later folks.
@MattN Bye.
@JM It says the clock is white, anyway I like the 7 shown as 6.999...
08:52
I lost my left glove in a very strange way
@JM and why did you guys say hi to me 2 hours ago?
hi all
@Rajesh hi
We have a Millennium contender on the front page I believe, Navier-Stokes this time. At least the paper, while an MS Word doc, is readable.
@Ilya Nothing. I just wanted to say "Hi". ;)
@anon Ech, why couldn't it have been plain text...
08:57
Well, MS-Word-turned-PDF-in-appearance, I guess I should say.
@anon ah, then it seems to be true
So what happened to your left glove ??
@JM, @anon did you guys know, by the way, that Claud-George Navie-Stokes is a fictional character? :D
@Ilya As fictional as John Rainwater?
Indeed. She was in the original Spiderman comics, if I recall correctly.
09:01
@RajeshD thank you, Rajesh, you're the only one among those, who have lost their gentility, and cared to ask about the story with my glove
the story with your glove. not sure if I want to know...
@JM wow, when did you become a moderator?
@Ilya Today.
@anon Sir, I would throw down my left glove to challenge you if I had one :)
@JM congrats!
@Ilya : WTF : whats with left glove ? what do you mean I have no idea ?
09:04
You must be pretty tiny to be able to fit through your left glove. // Edit: Fine then! Edit out my joke.
@anon :-Ъ
@RajeshD I've lost it, and I have no idea where
I just came out of the bus. It was in my hand (@anon: the glove, not the bus). Then I came into university, take it out (@anon: the glove, not the university) to make the music less loud. Then I came into my office and realized that I've lost it (@anon: the glove, not the office)
STOP FILLING MY SCREEN WITH ORANGES
/jacksparrowvoice
@anon I hope, oranges are rotten
@Ilya Спасибо, Илья. :)
Then I made the whole way back to the bus station and didn't find it
09:07
I really am not able to get what is ill-mannered about asking whats with your left glove ???
@Ilya
@JM If only I knew your name I would say you you're welcome in you language
@Ilya That's alright. ;)
His full name is on his blog
@anon Not the full name; you still need a few searches on Google to find it...
@RajeshD don't be so suspicious - I rather meant that others are ill-mannered
09:10
relieved !
@J.M. Are you talking about some kind of middle name? Because I see your first blog post and your about page...
@anon Something like that. The name in the first blog post is a contraction.
@JM : why don't you type down your full name here ? Whats the big deal ?
Oh, guess I'm not the pro-stalker I thought I was.
@anon hehe, stalker
09:13
@Rajesh: The big deal is that the future is unpredictable.
@RajeshD It's "want to know", not "need to know".
If you can figure it out through searching, then you deserve to know. ;)
I am better off calling you JM !
@RajeshD That's how I like it. :)
@JM Pakiusap, Jan
hope that's right :-[
@Ilya That's "please". :)
09:17
Hi guys 8-).
@JonasTeuwen hi
@Ilya "You're welcome" is "walang anuman"; or translated quite literally, "don't mention it".
Hi Jonas.
@JM we also use don't mention it sense in Russian instead of you're welcome
@Ilya Hi. Did you do some English courses in Delft? I'm going to do EAP-4.
@Ilya Oh, right. :) Interesting...
09:19
@JonasTeuwen I've done PROM-IV: Scientific writing in English. That was cool
@JM but there is also a short word пожалуйстаwhich means both please and you're welcome
@Rajesh: why?
@BrianMScott Apparently there is a finite number of elements, but so big that one can't count it in his entire life: that's finite uncountable
@Jonas: hey
@Ilya Nice.
@Brian good evening
@Ilya It’s an interesting idea ...
09:27
If I have in Mathematica f_ I x_ Re[y_] - f_ I y_ Re[x_] -> f Real[I x Conjugate[y]] it does not seem to match -3 i x Re[y] + 3 y Re[x] except when I replace the f with 3.
@JonasTeuwen put a ping to JM
@JM Do you know? 8-). I think the question is too short voor Mathematica.SE.
@Jonas voor ;)
@Ilya If пожалуйстаwhich is a short Russian word, then what is a long one?
@Ilya Morning, actually: about 0430. I’m about to head off to bed, but thought that I’d look in here first.
09:29
Oh, there is "which" attached 8-).
@JonasTeuwen I meant that it is just a short answer, instead of the full phrase. We usually have short words, and don't glue them together like others do :)
Some are just single consonants, too!
@BrianMScott я = I as in English. It was funny for me when I was living in a dual Russian-English world that я $= [ia] = [ai]^{-1} = I$
That’s not the kind of thing that I was thinking of. I’m too lazy to get out the character map for Cyrillic, but think of the prepositions k, s, v.
@BrianMScott I mixed up a consonant with a vowel, sorry :)
yes, к = to
с = with
09:36
Yes, very roughly 'to', 'with', and 'in'.
в = into, in
And at this point I’m out. See you later.
@Brian: good night
@Jonas: are you here?
@JonasTeuwen Yeah, it doesn't match; I can't think of the correct pattern to use here, though...
09:51
Look. He's all blue!
Someone give JM the Heimlich maneuver! He's not breathing!!
@Asaf in this manner I should ask you to stop eating carrots
@AsafKaragila I spat it out. Don't worry. ;)
@Ilya Why? Does the font of my username orange?
@AsafKaragila no, but your gravatar is of very carrot-color
I think it's more tan than orange, actually.
09:55
@Ilya That's not the same thing. Soon you'll start telling people with white shirts that they look pale.
Orange would be Robin's Gravatar...
@AsafKaragila don't play with a future forecasts
@JM give him a mercy, maybe they plant oranges in the ground and carrots on the trees
I think you're drunk. It's not even noon there.
09:58
@AsafKaragila don't play with the present forecasts as well. Your guessing machine seems to be broken
How much vodka did you drink last night? Three gallons? Five?
@AsafKaragila "I don't remember" should give some clues :)
@Ilya It gives a lower bound of $\huge 5,000,000$ gallons.
@AsafKaragila size does matter after all?
Read yesterday's SMBC.
@JM So now you can ban people form the chat network?
10:02
@AsafKaragila is it so important for you to be always the first? I'll miss you
@AsafKaragila I think so, but I wouldn't dream of usurping the König-ship from you... ;)
@JM I appreciate it. I was daydreaming about throwing someone else from the chatroom...
I think I know who you have in mind, but this is your place, not mine. ;)
I'll end up running for mod just to have the powers to do that myself.
10:07
:/
It's not you, anon.
Oh, I know that.
I know it is me.
(This is what happens when people talk behind another's back.)
What happens?
10:10
The guy in question is standing right there in the chatroom? I don't know.
So how is that behind his back?
I just figured with Skull's avatar faded it was presumed he wasn't present. Guess it was a mischaracterization.
@anon : What happened to your diplomacy ???
My diplomacy? Am I missing something here?
Do you have a diploma?
10:14
@Ilya It appears that the ban hammer is about to drop, are you ready to duel?
I'm getting Yu-Gi-Oh! vibes.
I'm too old for that. I heard the name, but I have no idea what's the storyline. Something Pokemonishly like, no?
Someone who's seen neither might expect that but I wouldn't really say they're much alike. (Though I haven't seen either since I was a kid.)
Well, since I was a younger kid.
@anon How old are you, kid?
20, yo.
Kanna is like 16 or 17, yeash.
10:18
I feel old.
@anon : Guess how old i am ?
@RajeshD My guess is that you're 10 years old, however I'm not sure which base to count that in, probably not decimal.
Uh... 30?
30's are the new 20's these days !
10:21
Okay, 20 then. How close am I? You're foreign to me, I can't tell!
to be explicit I am 31 !
in decimal
Oh come on, I was 1 off my first guess and then you make me think you're in your twenties...
you aren't sure with your guess....but thats incredible though
great @anon
To be fair Raj, you didn't give them a chance to use bisection...
Yo guys!
10:23
:-)
I have one problem, "There are an infinite number of polynomials P for which P(x+5) - P(x) = 2 for all x. What is the least possible value of P(4) - P(2)?"
@Skull may I ask you about your age?
@AsafKaragila because you're. is there any sand in your shoes? check it out
@Foool: First question to answer, what is the coefficient of the leading term of the polynomial Q(x)=P(x+5)-P(x) if P is degree n?
10:29
@Ilya I'm not wearing any shoes.
@AsafKaragila emmm, that's not the detail I would like you to share here :D
@Ilya Well, I am wearing pants. So no luck for you there.
@AsafKaragila this detail as well
@Skull does my question bans you?
@Ilya No, because it is just a number.
Are we making fun of my pants dislocation again?
10:32
@Skullpatrol at least I have this information
@anon should we?
@anon Now that was a looong time ago...
@Ilya may I ask you about your age?
guys, a question. $(X,d)$ is a metric space, $B$ is compact and $A$ is an open neighborhood of $B$. Does it mean that $A$ contains some $\varepsilon$-neighborhood of $B$? with the latter I mean $\{x\in X:d(x,B)<\varepsilon\}$ and $d(x,B) = \inf\limits_{y\in B}d(x,y)$
@Skullpatrol sure, you may
So we can take balls $O(x,r(x))$ which are contained in $A$, then take the finitely many of them, that will still be a cover of $B$. Then we pick the least $r(x_i)$ among these balls. Do I miss anything?
Can someone find a better title for this?
10:43
@Ilya I will not because of common courtesy, and anyway you might not be around to see your next birthday after our duel.
@Skullpatrol anyway, it's written in my profile
@AsafKaragila See now.
Much butter!
When in doubt, be ploddingly obvious. ;)
10:46
The Berkley thing has nothing to do with the question.
It's irrelevant to the contents.
Yeah, I'm with Asaf here. It could have come from a backwater community college for all we care...
he asks about the general technique. maybe in Berkeley exams such kind of problems are usual and one may look through MSE to find techniques to solve them
I heard Aquaman went to backwater community college.
Well, he keeps denying it...
@JM then I'll rollback your title. Is it OK if I leave the quotation and ?
10:49
@Ilya All I changed was the title, really. :)
I tried to get into backwater community college, but they said I have to know how to swim.
@JM done
@Skullpatrol w.r.t. our duel I've told you my claims
@JM all you need is title, title... title's all you need
@Ilya w.r.t. our duel I haven't started the homework assignment yet.
@Skullpatrol this provides an additional information about your age: it is a number, and you are late with your homerworks
Bah. Anybody read the new Google PP/TOS yet?
10:56
@anon The one they said they "simplified"?
PP/TOS?
Oh. Privacy Policy/Terms of Service.
@Ilya I keep trying to educate my guess but I second guess myself.
I read it. I recall thinking it is relatively okay.
Privacy Policy / Terms of Service. I don't doubt that it was simplified, just the fact Google's been bugging everybody for a month makes me think there's a serious change.
@AsafKaragila agree
10:57
I haven't read the old one so I cannot say how different it is.
@anon wikipedia's bugging made you think the same?
@AsafKaragila Ditto.
Ilya: I haven't done anything but read WP, and I don't think the rules really change for me in that regard... Not sure what you're referring to..
@anon at least there was nothing about HUMANCENTiPAD (or HUMANCENTiDROID) (in new PP/TOS for google)
Man, that was one mentally-scarring movie...
11:00
@anon they were asking for money for a couple of months - so did you think it may seriously close?
@JM that's the South Park episode. I didn't watch that movie
Speaking of moovies. What good recommendations do you have?
@AsafKaragila M
@Ilya Well, the South Park version, not so much...
Oh. Oh. I dunno about Wikipedia's financial situation, but I thought their donation campaign was kind of funny.
Isn't there a human centipede 2 out?
@Asaf: Recent movies?
I don't mind.
11:02
@AsafKaragila M
Have you seen Memento or Primer?
Memento's nice.
Memento, yes. Primer not.
Primer should confuse the hell out of you the first three times you see it. Then you realize the last 10 minutes are supposed to make no sense, because that's the mess time travel would create.
11:04
I'll watch that, but I need something my girlfriend might like too.
@Asaf: You've seen The Shawshank Redemption already? (It's not funny, but it's really good.)
What kind of movies would the gf like?
Just saw SR a second time recently, it's good. I wouldn't put it in my all-times like everyone seems to do, though.
Who haven't seen The Shawshank Redemption??
SR?
@AsafKaragila well... try to guess
@Asaf: how about Finding Forrester?
11:06
Soviet Russia?
@anon the 1st place in IMDB top 250 is rather ridiculous
user19161
@AsafKaragila I have not.
You're weird. :-D
@AsafKaragila Boat that Rocked. Hell, your girlfriend will like it as well
I liked 12 angry men.
SR = shawshank redemption, come on
11:06
I want something action-y
@anon Oh right.
Bourne? Pirates?
@anon he is too focused on Russia :)
user19161
@AsafKaragila You're right.
@Asaf : I'd suggest pick a high grossing Tollywood or Bollywood movie. They are truly for non-cerebrals
@AsafKaragila With or without plot?
11:07
@anon Pirates 4 is a big-big bullshit :(
Michael Clayton is a good movie.
user19161
@JM Also depends on whether it is 2D plot or 3D plot.
@JM I almost usually want plots.
Oh yes, Pirates 4 doesn't count for me. Very disappointing.
They're making a Bourne prequel or something too. Yikes.
"There are only three Indiana Jones movies, and there are only three Pirates of the Caribbean movies..."
user19161
11:08
@RajeshD Slumdog Millionaire is good.
And there are only three Star Wars movies!!
@JasperLoy That is nice, but not much action...
Thats not bollywood
@JM I wouldn't compare these :)
City of God has action, but it's long and kind of depressing. Based on true events.
11:09
@Jasper
Thats directed by a foreigner
user19161
@JM I like Shia la Beouf in Crystal Skull.
@AsafKaragila no, episodes 4,5,6 are also good
@JasperLoy THERE ARE ONLY THREE MOVIES!!!!1! :(
Plz plz remember : Slumdog M'naire is not a bollywood movie !
user19161
@Ilya I think none of the Star Wars movies are good.
11:10
@JasperLoy Burn in hell :D
@RajeshD Who said it was? It borrows elements from Bollywood though, like the last song-and-dance routine...
@Ilya shakes head
user19161
@RajeshD What wood is it then?
Oh. The Departed. I love that movie, and it's got action.
@Ilya Quick, get the stones...
11:11
I leave you for a while. Need to work. Btw, you remind me reservoir dogs now :)
@JM : earlier i was suggesting a Bollywood movie ...i thought Jasper's duggestion was in reply to that
@Ilya That's good, but I think everybody's watched that, too...
@Jasper : ask that question to Danny Boyl
I can also say The Lives of Others is good, but no real action. (I'm just going through the top 250 list and talking about what I've seen, pretty much.)
I'm drawing a blank on new action stuff that has at least some semblance of a plot...
user19161
11:14
A blank is the empty plot.
11:36
lull after a storm !
@JM Really, why doesn't it match? :-).
@Ilya I was to the course.
hi @John
