@Srivatsan I think it just means "lol".
the same thing as lolpies Urban Dictionary seems to indicate..
It's just "lol" added on to a random word for added effect of "what the hell am i looking at"
"OMGWTFLOLBBQ!" =)
2
I think Adam is laughing because it's yet another incomprehensible answer of BD's.
(At first I thought he might be laughing because BD got banned.)
09:04
Incomprehensible here is a matter of perspective.
It's gonna be 22 degrees today... but only 6 degrees during the night. :\
@anon Sure. But shouldn't answers be comprehensible to the OP?
Other variants: lollercoaster, lolocaust, roflcopters, etc.
@AsafKaragila We are talking about the Celcius scale, right?
@anon : D Never heard any of these before. I guess I don't spend enough time on the internet. coughs
09:05
Of course. What do you think I am, American?
Not necesssary, @Matt. I certainly benefited because I understood it and am looking up aurifeuillian factorization as we speak.
@MattN Not really. The OP is but one user who would read the post (except that the OP gets to accept an answer).
It's only a problem if there is only one answer.
Get On The Lollercoaster! Yeah, that was a frequently used term back at the days I would be a devianTART member...
I guess that doesn't happen in number theory.
09:07
@anon ha. i knew i wouldnt be the only one
He's got it pointing to the wrong url. Furthermore, Auri factorization seems to be something else typically of which cyclotomic polynomials happen to have a form that fits into the trend. I don't see any real references for it yet.
"Heroic calculations were performed, in an era leading up to the work of David Hilbert on the qualitative theory."
@Srivatsan Are you referring to Gordan's messy proofs of invariant theory?
oh never mind. I just saw the article
@FortuonPaendrag I don't know. I found it in a Wiki article.
I was amused by the word "heroic". (Doesn't sound too objective to me, hence the amusement.)
09:26
ARGH!!@#&*^#%@#&*()*&
I accidentally closed Firefox and all my edit is gone!!!!#!@$!%
recently closed tabs work?
The session was completely restored, but the edit is no longer in its own page, so the edit part was gone.
I'll take this time to try and improve the content even further. I have an idea but I'm not 100% sure it will work.

1 hour later…
10:40
Hello, I have a little question about logics or is there a specific SE for that?
Can I minimize the expression Nx * y + x * Ny
not sure how to describe this in english :p
N stands for not
Do you know LaTeX?
heard of it, though didn't use it
It is possible to use it in the chat using a javascript located somewhere in the meta (there is a link to it in the Chat Rules link)
Oh, then it doesn't matter. I just thought it would ease the writing.
What does *,+ stand for?
10:43
or
* stands for and
What does minimise mean?
to reduce the function
for example if I have x + Nx it's equal to 1
or true, depends what you want to see
So minimise means reduce it to a constant?
not necessarily
reduce - yes
10:46
For minimizing (reducing) I used Venn's diagram, although I probably need a different approach or the function itself is already minimized
This is your formula, right?
Isn't that just other form for writing x XOR y? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xor
Indeed! Thanks
@Tim Kowalski's notes are lecture notes about measure theory that I like.
11:06
The important thing is that I learned that the continuum hypothesis fails in the Feferman-Levy model.
Now it's time to take a shower, eat something and go teach.
@Martin The work of retagging has been take up with little but reasonable progress!
@KannappanSampath Thanks for your work.
And, your opinion about the tags proposed?
@MartinSleziak
That might be a useful tag.
@MartinSleziak Was it created? I see!
I didn't know about it?
11:20
No, it wasn't created yet.
@MartinSleziak But, how come it's linked to some page? For instance let me try: ?
oh, it works for any dam stuff followed by tag!
So, we'll collect opinion, as of now with me voting positive, +3 votes!
@Martin
I don't know who is going to downvote this =)
@Srivatsan I assume you voted positive?
Yes, I did.
@Martin: You might want to check that recent edit of mine in which I linked to a paper by Miller. He has a few more about Borel sets without the axiom of choice. Many very very surprising results (e.g. the one I quote in my answer)
11:36
Well, I guess I should first try to improve my knowledge of Borel sets in the presence of choice, before going to more advanced things.
But thanks for the tip.
Those who vote for this tag proposal may please register your votes.
Tag Proposed: [inclusion-exclusion]
(positive/negative)
Current: +3
That title does not sound too inviting....
Yeah, the same author.
Actually it's not the "hard" way, it's rather "the right way".
Because you can just use absoluteness arguments and have your results true in the ground model.
11:40
@KannappanSampath My guess is that you could be bold and start the tag (by tagging a few questions with it); it would be good to write tag excerpt and tag wiki too.
If someone will have some arguments having this tag here, I think after the tag appears between new tags, he will let us know. (At meta or in comments on main.)
BTW @Srivatsan you mentioned some time ago that you were thinking about introduction and . Or something like that.
Oh shoo, I'm late! I have to teach in 20 minutes and I have to swing by the office...
Bye!
Bye Asaf!
12:14
Meow.
These days, I am sad no one votes up the answers that have taken me longer to write and involve deeper things! Sad that no one votes up answers!

2 hours later…
14:14
Tag has been created!
I'll soon edit tag wiki and synonyms!
I request people to wait patiently!
@MartinSleziak Yes, I did not follow up on that (yet)
@KannappanSampath Thanks
Some time later maybe you'll get taxonomist badge ;-)
@Srivatsan ok, no problem. I was just wondering whether you changed your mind.
14:31
@Srivatsan: I think that these two comments are interesting.
@robjohn Yes, right?
But are you reading the transcript so far back now?
@Srivatsan I don't think Dylan knew that we had talked about Chicago.
I was searching for something and found Dylan's comment. I remembered mine.
@robjohn I don't think so either; in fact, I mentioned your comment to him.
@Srivatsan Ah, I hadn't seen that. :-)
I see that Bill D has stopped hanging out here.
@robjohn Not too surprising: he can't chat. Or post.
14:39
I think he was watching to see what was said here though. He could get some information that way, at least.
However, I think the mods were in communication with him. He said that they were going to make him use my "mean square" avatar for a year.
@robjohn What does that comment mean? I mean, should I take it literally?
I think that when he told me that he was being serious, but I might have misread things.
@robjohn (a) Why would the moderators make a user use a particular avatar? (b) Why your avatar? None of this makes any sense to me..
Oh no, I have to teach analysis 2.
I asked "why don't I have any teaching duties?" and he was like: "You don't??" and then noted he forgot about me.
I wish I didn't ask him.
He said because he had been so incredibly mean
14:44
That doesn't sound very professional.
@JonasTeuwen I wish too. =) What course is this? Undergraduate?
Plus the avatar is cool.
@JonasTeuwen He would have found out and then who knows if things might have been worse.
@Srivatsan Yes.
@robjohn I thought this was a metaphorical comment. (However, the 1 year stipulation does not make that much sense though..)
14:47
@Srivatsan Well, his account does not have my avatar yet, but we will see at the end of his suspension.
Tim
Tim
@MattN Thanks!
@Tim Welcome Tim
Tim
Tim
@KannappanSampath why?
@Tim I just came in and saw you! So, I presumed you just came in! :)
Tim
Tim
@KannappanSampath yes, I did.
14:50
@robjohn Unrelated: how did you pick the colour for your mean square?
@Tim So, should I not welcome you!
Tim
Tim
@KannappanSampath Oh, I see. You are welcome too.
@Srivatsan I don't know. I just thought that orange looked meaner somehow. I chose (255,160,0) as a good orange.
@KannappanSampath Maybe he thought "welcome" is a reply to "thanks". Just a speculation.
@Srivatsan Ah, I didn't think about this! You make genuine guesses!
Tim
Tim
14:53
@robjohn Bill, oh dear Bill
@robjohn Oh. I have never wondered which would be a good color for such emotions. =)
Tim
Tim
@Srivatsan Yes, I did think so
Perhaps dark "evil" green would be suitable too..
@KannappanSampath Indeed it was genuinely a guess. =)
@Srivatsan Red is usually portrayed as anger, and so I thought that something in the area and a bit less primary would be good for meanness.
@Srivatsan Green seems more natural and peaceful to me.
@robjohn Oh, I had the Grinch in mind when I suggested green.
14:56
@Srivatsan That is interesting, since I did try to find images of the Grinch to change the color of my avatar for Christmas, but it just didn't look right.
Plus, you know, green is the colour of Slytherin.
@robjohn Hm, today is my guess day. =)
@Srivatsan I should slowly retag questions with PIE, right?
@KannappanSampath Yes, slowly. Otherwise you will have the mods knocking on your doors, asking you to keep it down.
I just saw that you created the tag. Thanks.
@Srivatsan Yeah, Thank you!
And for tag wiki, I intend to create it once I have 2500 rep, is that fine or I should create it now?
@robjohn Also, I just remembered: in the musical Wicked, the witch Elphaba is also dark green. However, not having seen it myself, I do not know whether this character is good or evil.
@KannappanSampath It is fine. As you might have noticed, there are quite a few tags without a wiki summary or an excerpt.
15:02
oh I see, I am not sure about that!
(Rob: Just out of curiosity, have you seen this particular musical?)
I think someone should write a comment here: "It's a pretty trivial proof. Just have the right out the definitions and do it."
@MattN Ah, someone took that comment badly. :=)
"extentention"?
@KannappanSampath I don't think you need any extra rep to edit tag wiki. As I read here: "All registered users can submit edits for tag wikis." The only thing is that then someone will have to approve your edit.
15:15
@MattN And "polynoimal extention"
@Srivatsan I'm so tempted to write that comment.
@MartinSleziak But I thought I'll wait!
@Kannappan: which comment do you want to downvote but couldn't? Rahul's or The Chaz's?
@KannappanSampath ok, I understood what you wrote that you think that you cannot edit tag wiki. (Because of rep.) That's why I wrote the above.
@Srivatsan Rahul's, if that was not a kind of obvious!
15:23
@KannappanSampath (I am assuming you found it offensive, not off-topic.) To play the devil's advocate: Well, he did say it was not safe for work. =)
@Srivatsan Whatever, I think he should not have posted that!
Gee, ok.
You could flag it if you wish. (Not that I am recommending this. I am not usually perturbed by such perverseness. :-))
@Srivatsan I've flagged it already.
I see. Ok.
I'll be back later!
15:32
@Srivatsan Apologies for posting here in public chat. May I know what you mean by "Of the foxes that are running, one of them is an old fox". The original version is meant to denote a cunning fox. Do you mean to say old are cunning.
@Ubermensch I'll catch up with the developments later!
@KannappanSampath By the way, a tip: Try to give enough context for people to figure out which comment you were talking about. I was thinking: Probably, you found Rahul's comment offensive. Or maybe it was that The Chaz's comment was off-topic? I couldn't tell. [Even more: imagine that the mods acted on your flag and removed Rahul's comment; then wouldn't the reader misunderstand that it was The Chaz's comment?]
@Ubermensch What do you mean by "original version"? I put up the original version (in Tamil) in the same profile page.
@Srivatsan Sure, from the next time!
I'll add a comment this time!
@Srivatsan May be continue this discussion here
@Srivatsan Sorry mate I got it wrong. I confused the first and second lines.
16:22
@Srivatsan: here is what I was looking for before: t.b.'s last message here. It explains why he has been absent a lot.
@robjohn Ah, I hadn't seen that before.
Thanks. Good to know that everything is ok.
Yeah.
@Srivatsan Sorry, I had assumed everyone had read that.
@MattN It was in a different room, right?
@MattN Hm, I was just typing "I wish Matt had passed the update to us." :P
But it's fine.
16:25
@robjohn Yes.
@Srivatsan Now I feel quite bad about it. I saw you in that room from time to time so I thought you'd read all of it.
@MattN It seems I wasn't in that room for 10 or so days. (Perhaps even more; it is my memory that the last time I was around, tb was still visiting the site. I cannot be sure about this.)
He posted it a week after his disappearance. Meanwhile I had been wondering about whether he had slipped in the shower and was lying dead or unconscious in his flat or got hit by a car and all sorts. : (
If you know someone's chat id, you can find their most recent posts...
2
For tb: http://chat.stackexchange.com/users/18268/t-b?tab=recent
It's arranged by room
@robjohn I know that. But I didn't need to search as I was pinged by it.
@MattN I was mentioning the link for general usage. :-)
16:33
@robjohn What is chat id?
How do I find yours, e.g.?
@Srivatsan Look at the URL for your chat profile... it's in there
mine is 20249
Or go to the chat profile by clicking on the avatar and go to the recent tab.
so to see my most recent messages: http://chat.stackexchange.com/users/20249/robjohn?tab=recent
@MattN that is how I get to the chat profile :-)
@robjohn Knowing someone's chat id sort of suggested to me that you directly edit the url : )
@MattN however, if someone has not been to the chat for a while, it is a bit difficult to get their id
16:36
@robjohn Yes. And tb's name is especially hard to search. I wish he had called himself teddybear instead. =)
@MattN for people who have not been here in a while, I pretty much had to.
@Srivatsan It is very hard to find him :-(
@Srivatsan J.M.'s name is also hard to search for.
@robjohn Though I think he is particularly easy to find because he's all over the place.
Yes, that's true.
16:38
Actually, he shows up if you type J.M., unlike t.b.
So JM is not as hard to find.
And I agree with Matt as well. :) For instance, these days, you can find him in the Mathematica site in any case.
@robjohn But I don't understand: he's the owner of more than one room. If you visit here then just pick a room with his name in the title -> problem solved.
@MattN Well, I wasn't that clever. :=)
On the other hand: it took me a while to figure that search on SE is broken and actually takes spaces into account. So: "J.M." yields zero matches. facepalm
@MattN I don't follow everyone's rooms, so I didn't go searching for rooms. I just knew that you can find the latest messages in the profile.
16:43
@robjohn So how did you catch his profile page?
Where has JM gone to? 8-).
Did he say anything?
@JonasTeuwen His profile says "Cutting down on posting for a bit. Not really feeling fine lately.".
@Srivatsan I had to get his id by looking for someone saying hi to him
@robjohn Ah, right.
@JonasTeuwen He was in the Mathematica room earlier today (UTC).
16:45
Okay, good reason :-).
:3127577 Ah, he changed avatars again. After the fern was a torus, now it's a helix, a cheesy helix :-)
@robjohn It reminds me of pasta but I thought I'd delete the message because it might be taken as "bashing his avatar". (even though it isn't)
@MattN I wouldn't worry about that. Someone would have to really be pushing things to take offense at that.
I would say: A necessary condition to take offense at that is to be American, but that might offense someone and it's just a (stereotype) joke 8-).
@Srivatsan I'll second that. That would be cute. Are you going to suggest that to him?
@JonasTeuwen Why American?
16:50
Maybe maybe it would be better to say to get sued for that.
@JonasTeuwen I'm sorry, but I will have to flag that. It offends me :-D
:D.
But always polite.
@robjohn I'd rather be on the safe side since I have not met anyone in here IRL so I don't know what they might take the wrong way.
I have neither flagged nor downvoted here. I would rather suggest improvement than punish.
Yes, that's my attitude too.
16:53
Not that I wouldn't if something gets bad enough, but nothing has, so far.
@MattN Well, I am sure he wouldn't like it, so...
@Srivatsan He probably wouldn't. I'm still amused by the idea though. : )
See you later folks! : )
@MattN We could make it a running gag. :D
@Srivatsan I would like that. I think he could live with it. After all it's nice compared to being called theobromine. : )
Anyway, off for Spanish noms. See you in a bit.
17:14
There's someone that posted a question with [algebra] just now. I'm not sure where to toss it, though.
In the bin! In the bin!
This much is obvious.
@AsafKaragila I wasn't sure either, but I gave algebra-precalculus there. (There is a system of equations....) Well, either that, or giving the algebra-related tags away completely.
Yeah.
I thought so.
Wow, my answer got long.
17:38
@Jonas: hey! I need you
hi all
I just need to get awakened on a basic concept/question, without knowing which i can't sleep tonight !
@all
sorry for pinging all : I just did it in a hurry
You are aware that @all doesn't really ping anyone; and everyone can read your message... right?
Oh i didn't know that
ok wait...thanks for responding
i just have a quick question
I doubt I'll be able to answer, you're not usually asking about things I know.
this one's not like that
u'll see
@Asaf : thanks , i got clarified !
17:52
I glad I could help...
The OP here seems to writing the math expression using some programming language syntax; can someone identify what? math.stackexchange.com/questions/102337/…
Looks like Mathematica.
Oh, thanks.
Tim
Tim
18:12
Hello, regarding geometric measure theory, its tag says it is "the study of the geometric structure of measures, as well as the study of geometry from a measure-theoretic viewpoint." I was wondering what kind of space is being studied? A metric space with some measure defined on it and compatible with the metric in some way?
@Tim In case you don't get an answer, you could still consult the Wiki oracle.
Tim
Tim
@Srivatsan I have read it, but I cannot answer my questions based on wiki
Chasing some references from there: amazon.com/Geometric-Measure-Theory-Third-Beginners/dp/…. (google books link: books.google.com/…)
I am not able to follow the references I just posted. =)
You should try DOI links.
@AsafKaragila Hm, could you expand that comment?
Are you not able to access that document?
18:21
I am. I have to go home now, I'll expand on that in a bit.
@AsafKaragila Sure, whenever you're free, of course.
@Srivatsan and @Rajesh: it seems that I was taking a joke the wrong way. What's new? There will be no avatar punishment meted out. It would have been confusing for someone else to be walking around in my skin. I already have Ilya in my head :-)
@AsafKaragila After lunch? I can see why you might expand :-D
@robjohn Did you correspond with the big B on that? =)
@Srivatsan yeah, he saw my comments and saw that I had taken it the wrong way.
(I had always wanted to use that term. I hope he doesn't mind.. :P)
@robjohn But he wasn't on chat. Unless -of course- he was offline; I am not sure why he would be offline.
18:26
I should also ping @Jonas since he was around when we were discussing it.
@Srivatsan He was in the room, unable to participate.
(I know that he would be unable to participate, but his gravatar would be visible. Anyway, not important, I guess...)
@Srivatsan I agree with Asaf. That looks very much like Mathematica
@robjohn Hm, thanks. I tried to edit the post adding TeX; I gave up because it was too confusing for me =)
@Srivatsan If his avatar had gone by then, then he must have seen me mention it to Jonas that morning.
I see. That is possible.
18:33
@Srivatsan I think you were there at the time, but I don't think you noticed what I had said.
@robjohn Oh yes. I did remember reading it previously; but I assumed you were joking. Only after reading your comment a second time, did I realise...
I am gullible -_-
@rob: In this page, what does "have a view on this" mean? From the name, it is likely that the person is not a native speaker of English, and that they just meant "If you happen to come across this page, then...". Confirm?
@Srivatsan either he means "if you have an idea about what's wrong" or "if you have a problem with this"
@robjohn What does "if you have a problem with this" mean? I mean, it's a broken link; of course, I have a problem with it. =)
18:43
Well, if you have something that relies on that link, perhaps he would put its priority up a notch.
I don't know. You'd have to write him and find out :-)
"a problem with this" being a problem with the site being down, not a problem with the site, which as you say, is a given.
@robjohn Ah, right. May not be high priority, but I found this link in an answer. So the (accepted & highly upvoted) answer is pretty much useless now.
@Srivatsan temporarily.
Hm, I guess I was just skeptical of broken things getting fixed. =)
Tim
Tim
18:59
@Srivatsan Thanks!
@Tim Ya, like I said: the subject seems old, but I cannot follow anything pretty much.
