So how do I do this?
@Maximilian He's simply taking the LCM. Note that $\dfrac{\cos 2x}{\cos 2x} = 1$
I'm on a mobile device so I can't really see the LaTeX on here
@Nick How can the proctors not see the parents helping
Ok never mind it works
@ᴇʏᴇs they probably shood away the first few but imagine 10 lakh parents standing outside!
00:02
I don't have a cos2x on top? And I need s cos2x on the bottom to get sec2x
lol
@Nick Are the parents usually really smart?
Also in the answer he keeps cos2x on the bottom the entire time, to me he just turned 1 into cos2x out of nowhere
@ᴇʏᴇs No, but all answers are either googlable or available in guides.
@Maximilian For gosh sakes he took the LCM. for example 1 + 1/2 = (2+1)/2 = 3/2
I've never seen that done in my life
@Maximilian Neither have I but all of India is gawking on about that strange place called Bihar where this has been reported to happen. Move over Peter Parker, everyone in Bihar is now Spiderman. With great stress and social burden comes great spider-ability.
00:08
I see what it's doing now... Still never seen it done that way
@Maximilian oh your talking about lcm? You ought to brush up on fractions, it was an important part of it. I assure you, you WILL see stranger algebraic manipulations throughout your study-adventures.
00:19
@Nick Your line is covering a button I need to press on the right side
someone delete it, for gosh sakes, I'm out of touch with $\LaTeX$
$$\require{cancel} LHS = 1 + \frac{\sin x\cdot \sin 2x}{\cos x\cdot \cos 2x} = 1+ \frac{\sin x\cdot 2\sin x \cancel{\cos x}}{\cancel{\cos x} \cdot \cos 2x} = \frac{\cos 2x + 2\sin^2 x}{\cos 2x} = \sec 2x \cdot \left(1 - 2\sin^2 x + 2\sin^2x\right) = RHS$$
@Maximilian: ^ The above is my attempt.
@ᴇʏᴇs :( Sorry. It seems the new MathJax isn't wrapping in the same way the old one did. Damn that update.
Might do it if you wrap them in double $\$\$$
@ᴇʏᴇs Isn't that what i did?
@Nick Oh I thought you did it with one pair
@Nick Oh well
@ᴇʏᴇs I understand why you thought that. The one pair produced the same effect when the Old MathJax was around. Should we be complaining to some authorities about our troubles?
00:26
@Nick I'm not a good complainer
@ᴇʏᴇs Neither am I. I don't even know who to complain to. All I can think of is either @robjohn or @PedroTamaroff but I know neither of em can't do a thing about it.
@Nick I just don't want to upset the wrong people
@Nick Sometimes when I complain to someone I get penalized for it
(in real life)
... If it's a fair complaint, Dilbert, then maybe it's a matter of presentation.
Isn't "fair" subjective
@ᴇʏᴇs yes, but the fairest fairness is only subjective to timing and general squeamishness to the topic, if you know what I mean.
00:31
I don't know anything
@ᴇʏᴇs knowledge is subjective. lol
Open your @ᴇʏᴇs
look up to the skies
and seeee
Do you work out?
No, I kind of want to but I can never find the time with studying and such
@ᴇʏᴇs I actually wanted study advice when I asked that question, really. I often feel I burn out too quickly. Do you have any words of advice?
00:38
@Nick I don't think so. I think it's better to get advice from somebody who's been in a similar position to yours and have successfully dealt with the same issue
@Nick I don't think I've ever felt "burnt out" before unless I have and didn't realize it
@ᴇʏᴇs IRL, I am surrounded by people among whom I'm the relative success. The only people I know who can help me are TOO successful to reply. lol
@ᴇʏᴇs I'm supposed to study atleast 6 hours a day. I can barely manage 2 regularly.
@Nick Sorry. Maybe it's something similar to ADD so you get bored easily?
@Nick Or maybe you need more variety between subjects..like something related to your courses, but more fun
@ᴇʏᴇs Yeah, I hope I have mental disorder... dude, seriously that's a mean thing to say... eh, but what do I care. I really hope it is something wrong with my brain.
@Nick I don't necessarily think it's something "wrong" but people are all just different
@ᴇʏᴇs Yes, people are different. Some have disabilities, some don't. I'm segregated under the latter. I don't have any special provisions to lean onto although, as you say, I'm "different".
00:45
What's the problem?
@PedroTamaroff Go up ^ to my unfinished line of latex and see the mess.
RLY?
Can you elaborate?
UGH.
Why did you do that?
It works for me...
It runs off the screen for me and moves the entire window over
00:48
@PedroTamaroff Whatever be my intention then, the intention I wish to state right now is, "I did it to annoy you"
lol
Hi @Shahar
Hello
@PedroTamaroff Seriously, almighty Pedro, delete it.
You forgot \end{align}
$$\require{cancel}\begin{align} LHS &= 1 + \tan x \cdot \tan 2x \\ &= 1 + \frac{\sin x\cdot \sin 2x}{\cos x\cdot \cos 2x} \\ &= 1+ \frac{\sin x\cdot 2\sin x \cancel{\cos x}}{\cancel{\cos x} \cdot \cos 2x}\\ & = \frac{\cos 2x + 2\sin^2 x}{\cos 2x} \\ &= \sec 2x \cdot \left(1 - 2\sin^2 x + 2\sin^2x\right)\\ &= RHS\end{align}$$
00:49
Oh @Shahar saves the day
@Shahar LOLOLOL.
Well, it seems ChatJAX wasn't the problem after all.
Bye bye.
Later
Are you guys all professional mathematicians?
00:51
@PedroTamaroff Bye but my views on MathJax 2 doesn't change. She got some serious bugs.
or PhD students/professors/etc.
@Shahar I'm a noob
@Shahar I'm the n00biest n00b in the whole wide n00biverse. I am apprentice of all those here and will continue in my current post till I'm 90.
@Shahar i'm studying to be
Oh, cool.
I'm an undergrad in computer engineering.
I'm one of those, ya know
00:54
@Shahar you're one of those blue racoons?
yeah well
@shah one of them. gross. kidding. i used to be a ME student
@Shahar I bet you still know more math than I do
@meer2kat Wow, really?
@ᴇʏᴇs I bet you know more math than me.
00:55
@Shahar yeppers
I go to an engineering school and there are 2 female ME's
haha i know that feel. i was one of the few
Our school doesn't even have an engineering program
Computer engineering has no females either
but ME especially
@Shahar For the record, I wasn't calling you names, I was just trying to finish your sentance.
00:55
@Nick I was about to
but then I felt, eh let them finish it
oh yeah. at my school there are maybe 5 or 6 female CEs. two of them are in my sorority
wait, no...3
@Nick Meh.
Anyway I go to an institute of technology
@meer2kat You're in a sorority
so, it's purely engineering for the most part
00:56
@ᴇʏᴇs I am
I'm in the engineering sorority, in fact
@PedroTamaroff Gosh, it sounds like this mod job has really moderated you out, man.
Yeah they have those here as well.
Yep yep. Phi Sigma Rho
It would be pretty funny
00:57
@Nick Maybe. Maybe not.
if some of us go to the same school
I wouldn't be surprised
I don't want to pay any fees so I don't join any organizations or Greek chapters
@PedroTamaroff That is moot.
I found this site working on a project during my co-op. I wouldn't be surprised if others did the same
00:58
I didn't join any of the Greek things
@ᴇʏᴇs Yeah they're pricey
because it's not for me
Sitting in front of my computer programming
that's a day in the life of Shahar
Haha i used to do that all day for my freaking classes and work projects. so glad i left
@meer2kat Oh no not for school
I hate computer engineering
because there is no programming
I love programming
Oh you're doing hardware?
00:59
Unfortunately
I hope you guys know that wikipedia doesn't recognize StackExchange, quora or Yahoo Answers as active online communities. How ironic.
I liked hardware stuff. I'm not big in to the software
@meer2kat Then we're opposite in that respect
@Nick What is?
@Pedro Probably Wikipedia itself lol
01:01
@PedroTamaroff exactly.
@Shahar yes indeed. don't get me wrong, the feeling of satisfaction when you complete a big programming project is great. but the amount of work isn't worth the payoff to me
@meer2kat So you changed your major to mathematics?
We're still different then haha.
@Nick You're being too cryptic.
@ᴇʏᴇs nope, wikipedia isn't an active community either, as per wikipedia
@Shahar i did mathematics with a concentration in physics and a minor in english with a concentration in literary analysis
01:01
@Nick lol
@meer2kat So you're a grad student now?
@Shahar i wish. i have 4 more semesters including summer. it depends on what the available classes look like in upcoming semester. i could finish in as few as three if i want to kill myself. then i have to try to get in to grad school
@meer2kat Screw the minor then
@PedroTamaroff No, I'm being vague. You're being misunderstanding. @ᴇʏᴇs thinks your talking about something else.
@Nick you look sexy too
01:03
Though "math with a concentration in physics" is the opposite of what I'd imagine
@Nick OK. I cannot be your wingman here but I'll just remind you not to trust profile pictures.
Since physics is applying math to model phenomena (and not the reverse), it doesn't make sense to study math in concentration in physics
@Shahar nahhh i want the minor. i can't take all math classes for three semesters straight. i'll go insane. i thought about a physics minor. it's only three more classes. why is physics concentration strange?
@PedroTamaroff That's my real pic. I've changed it several times. All of me.
@ᴇʏᴇs lol, it's strange that I never actually tell that to actual people.
I was looking at some of the applicants in the pools for grad schools and compared to my academic profile they are much superior yet they got rejected from many low-tier schools :(
01:05
Except I'm brunette now. I dyed my hair cuz I was bored of my mousy blonde
@meer2kat: What I said was a compliment... take it in a very non-creepy way. lol
@meer2kat Yeah you see, for a minor in applied math or CS I'd need to add 2 courses
but I'm not doing that, 'cause then I will need to pay for summer or winter courses lol
@PedroTamaroff Here you go again, responding like a psyduck to my humour.
@ᴇʏᴇs That's scary. I'm nervous now. I'm hoping if I do well enough on the GRE they'll overlook my mediocre GPA. engineering killed my perfect record
@meer2kat If you have 4 semesters left, that's plenty of time to prepare for a good application
@meer2kat I only have 1 left
01:07
@Shahar 2 courses for a minor isn't bad though. your schedule too packed to fit them in to regular semesters?
@meer2kat Yeah maximized my credits
@ᴇʏᴇs that's terrifying. i wish you a lot of luck. i've been thinking about doing the peace corps thing for my masters
@Shahar that sucks
@ᴇʏᴇs 1 life left... whatever will you do Mario!
@Nick All-in
psh don't worry you'll get into a good grad school
01:09
hello all
what's your undergrad gpa look like?
@mixedmath Yellow, yellow, mixed math fellow
@Shahar At this point I don't care about a good grad school..I want to get into any one
@mixedmath hello Brown U PhD student
@meer2kat 3.9 lol
@Shahar that I am
01:10
what did you get on your GRE?
If you took it
@Shahar I take it in a few months
@Shahar me?
yeah
@Shahar oh come on. you're gonna be fine
@ᴇʏᴇs I wish I was that confident.
01:11
perfect general, and a mid 80 percentile subject
@meer2kat I'm not scared
@Nick I'm not confident, I'm desperate
but engineering still sucks
@Shahar I know people who would kick you in the groin for having that score.
@ᴇʏᴇs i feel that. it determines your future
01:11
I know many who did better than me on the subject test, but it's still a eird test
@Shahar psh, hence i left
@mixedmath Why do you say it's weird
Good call, I wanted to switch to computer science after my first semester
@ᴇʏᴇs At the right dosage, the difference is negligible.
But computer scientists are not as respected as engineers
so I suffer to be a respected bastard
01:13
@Shahar that's all foundations of programming languages and stuff, right?
That's why we have CECS at my school. They do both hardware and software
@Shahar Hitler was a respected bastard.
@Nick Yeah you can say that, it's hard to explain because there's a lot to it.
He might have been an engineer then
@meer2kat But they're probably stuck in school for like 6 years
No thanks, I'll settle on my 3 years of undergrad
@Shahar 5. With the five years you get a bachelor's, a master's, and a full year of work experience
@Shahar I guess the apt summary for computer science is computer science, eh.
01:15
There's a whole lot of math in CS
@Shahar He engineered mass extermination and borderline genocide. I think that counts.
@meer2kat They probably aren't "engineers" then in reality
@Nick "borderline" genocide?
I'm Jewish by the way, Israeli in fact
> "Get out"
lol
@Shahar jews were step 1. He would have killed off all the non-aryans if it weren't for Captain America ... yeah, it could have been much much worse.
01:18
@Shahar I'd disagree. We're a top-line school and most of them have job offers by the time they hit senior year.
But the program is ruthless. 19-20 hours every semester @shah
^This is the person who wrote the first algorithm!?
Plus summer semester is required
I wish I went to a top school
01:18
@meer2kat Oh I see, that's why
@Shahar Mhmmm it's horrible
And yeah that's Ada Lovelace
@Nick Are you just browsing wiki?
I gave you the link so you can look under the different subsets of computer science
Go to "Areas of computer science"
@ᴇʏᴇs You're going to be fine. Have you started studying for the GRE?
01:21
@meer2kat No, I'm studying the wiki, making breakfast, ironing my clothes, making the bed, watching Sherlock, writing code for a webcomic site and following the randomness of this chat.
@Nick Excellent. Sherlock, what season/ep?
@meer2kat Yes
Oh TV, I haven't watched TV in ages
@meer2kat My issue is with letters of recommendation, I'm having a hard time getting any :(
@ᴇʏᴇs Nervous? I've been looking through the info for it and it honestly doesn't look very hard
01:22
(for actual shows, only watch the news)
@meer2kat Not really nervous for the math subject GRE, no
@ᴇʏᴇs Yeah I need to start working on getting to know profs in my department. None of them will help?
@meer2kat It's the first season I think, um, the blind baker.
@ᴇʏᴇs it doesn't actually reveal anything about mathematical knowledge or intent, right?
@meer2kat They are willing to help, but I'm not giving them much to work with so the issue really lies with me
01:23
@Nick i love the first season :)
all professors care about is their research, ask a PhD student
but this is also why many schools use it only as a barrier to entry
@ᴇʏᴇs Oh? No extracurriculars or anything?
@meer2kat What do you mean extracurriculars
I love how he breaks into the apartment building:
Sherlock: Hi. I live in the flat just below you. I don't think we've met.
Someone: No, well ah I've just moved in.
Sherlock: Actually I've just locked my keys in my flat.
Someone: Do you want me to buzz you in?
Sherlock: Yeah. And can I use your balcony?
Someone: What?
01:24
@ᴇʏᴇs What do you want your recs to look like?
@Nick Hahahahahaha oh Sherlock
Alright guys it's been cool but I have to go study haha. Fill my brain with useless information about transistors and shit like that
gross
@meer2kat That I displayed creative talent and unusually elegant proofs for the homework/exams for the class
good luck. i need to do hw...but...i don't want to
@ᴇʏᴇs ah that would be helpful
btw @meer2kat I see you program in VB.NET, brings back memories
alright well I'm heading out, peace
01:27
@Shahar made me want to cry. it was awful. i hated that freaking project. i was programming inside solidworks for it.
well outside solidworks for a program that went inside solidworks.
@meer2kat My professors say that's the only thing they usually write for their students going into grad programs
@ᴇʏᴇs what are you wanting to do for grad again?
@meer2kat And to think I preferred Robert Downey Jr as my favorite Holmes for even a second. I think Sherlock, Supernatural and Doctor Who is all I need on TV.
@meer2kat Mathematics
@Nick Amen to that. I also enjoy Merlin, Firefly, The 100, and Downton Abbey. Basically, I mostly watch british television
@ᴇʏᴇs Ah okay, that could be difficult i bet. i want to do education for my master's
01:29
@Shahar People still use VB.NET? Actual people?
@meer2kat Firefly with Nathan Fillion is British?
@Nick Not many. I was using Visual Basic because I couldn't get a C compiler and had to essentially break in to solidworks and that was the most effective way to access the controls
@Nick No lol. Most of the other ones I watch are
@meer2kat I absolutely fail to understand the appeal of Downton though. Other than Maggie Smith, I don't see it as being above any spanish soap. Maybe it's because I haven't soaked into it.
@Nick i think to me it's the appeal of the time period and culture and the historical aspects
@meer2kat I grew up watching other content on that time period and not just certain Monty Python and Blackadder, I mean certain movies that I don't even remember the names of. I guess that's a reason why I don't spare time to downton. Surely, I'll get into it someday. If I can bear Dexter, I can bear this.
@meer2kat Gosh, this sounds hard. You're making me fear going down that road and it's a road I really want to go down. There are joys to it aren't there?
@Nick Dexter was interesting. I was not a fan. Downton gets better as it goes along
@Nick Lots of tears and lots of happiness. You get hooked after a few episodes
01:38
Let $f$ be a continuous function on $[a,b]$. Is there anyway i can simplify this limit?
$\lim_{\epsilon \to 0}\int_a^b \dfrac{\epsilon f(t) dt}{(t-x)^2 +\epsilon^2 }$
@meer2kat I guess initial episodes don't really capture the whole of a series. I learnt that from Monk, the first few episodes were bland and I regretted rewatching the show and then I discovered during s3 or s4 why I loved it in the first place.
where $x\in[a,b]$
@Nick that's always good! have you heard of the 100?
@meer2kat I'm not fan of Dexter either. I'm a much bigger fan of the Dexter with the Lab. lol
@SaalHardali i'd look at it if i had latex on but i don't right now. sorry :(
@Nick hahaha yesss
01:40
@meer2kat Sadly no, I haven't been watching much telly the past two years. I think I've heard of it though.
@AlecT @I'm Did you say you programmed the textbook website using PHP?
@Nick it's definitely worth a watch if you have time. it's ongoing. think lost but in a post-apocalyptic with juvenile delinquents
@meer2kat lol, I just read the plot and I speed readed through each episode summary, it seems oddly entertaining. I've added it my imdb watchlist.
excellent!
@Committingtoachallenge wtf? that sounds weird.
01:44
@Committingtoachallenge Hi
@Committingtoachallenge what's a textbook website? something like hyperphysics?
@ᴇʏᴇs How are you doing?
@Committingtoachallenge I'm doing fine thank you for asking :D
@Committingtoachallenge Decent I guess
01:45
@Nick Nah, it is a website that stores information you input about how which pages of a textbook you have completed or skimmed. It helps you know what you have done, so you know what is left to do. For me it helps since I am working through many many textbooks
@Committingtoachallenge Oh, then it sounds great. I'm still struggling to make a webcomic site with PHP. I need some help. Hey, does his app integrate with HabitRPG ? It sounds useful to me.
@Committingtoachallenge Btw, how's your challenge going. I misplaced the link to your blog (along with many other precious things)
@Nick He made it in 12 hours he said, and I am the only other user of it haha. He can give you an account, but he seems to be very reluctant to add accounts to it(I asked for it multiple times in a 6 month period before I got access)
@Nick I am unsure how it is going at the moment, since I am doing classes and I haven't updated it in a little while
But it was going very badly last time I updated it
@ᴇʏᴇs Decent is pretty good to me :)
@JasperLoy Hey JL
4 hours ago, by Chris's sis
@JasperLoy Be a warrior and defeat all the negative thoughts! ;)
01:58
@meer2kat New picture?
Hi @JasperLoy
@JasperLoy I like your new picture the best
@Committingtoachallenge Ease up, you'll finish it eventually. Make a note of to finish it though. I still have a pile of books that I haven't finished yet.
Good Morning @JasperLoy
@JasperLoy oh it finally updated. yep!
@ᴇʏᴇs It's called steelblue.
