Bored.. making some Illustrator brushes....

@Scott Well done! Not the easiest shape to get working.
Now you just wait until ornamented borders get into fashion again ...
Could you write text with this?
Don't get me wrong, there's something cool about this. Just wondering what a use case could be.

I was just watching Ink Master (US tattoo competition tv series) and looking at some of the tattoos created by Ryan Ashley and realized some of the elements would make decent brushes..

@Scott Ahh, I see. In hindsight, I think I did sense the tattoo vibe.

Just busy work really :)
Things that might on rare occasion be useful sometime in the future when I have no time to create.

@Scott, Reminds me in an indirect way of some knife patterns I did in Illustrator a couple of years ago.

yeah sometimes it's just more about exploration into the creative as opposed to specific intentional use.

5:21 PM
Cool... a couple kind of seem 1940s German propaganda-ish :)

@Scott Yeah ... sorry about that. It was unintentional. 😂
They are just a study in what you can do with just one image and transform effects.

I didn't mean that as negative.. just an observation.
They are cool :)

@Scott All the default avatars on GDSE follow a swastika principle as well. Some more obvious than others.
@Scott Thanks.

Yup
I was seeing how well I could pull off metal and jewels without any gradients or blends in brushes.

@Scott Oh? I thought there were gradients. Looks like it in that low resolution.

5:26 PM
Nope all flat objects everywhere

@Scott That's nice! At a small size they still look very 3D.
Gradients are often misused. They have their use in artwork of course, but I think I tend to like flat stuff that still looks like it has depth.

I was also playing with brush alignment so strokes could be stacked, each using a different brush...

@Scott AH, never thought about doing that.

yeah just something to do really :)

I never really spent much time making brushes like this. I guess mainly because ornamented frames are so rarely used these days.
I really love the diversity of frames they used 100-150 years ago. But I have a hard time finding use for them in what I do. I think a double stroke is the most ornamented frame I've made. 😀

5:37 PM
True.But I often used these as things other than frames. Spot illustrations for one thing or another.... The jewels probably will never be used, but the chains brushes make it easy to wrap something in chains :)
For frames I do a lot of very ornamental corners or center pieces, flourishes or ornaments that just don't work as brushes.
There's a place in some of my work for that 30s-40s stock certificate "feel" at times

yeah somewhat

I would love to have use for something like this. I even made the parts into puzzle pieces I can move around knowing that I probably never going to use them.

I did a series of seasonal corners last year....

@Scott That's nice.
I sense an "American" style here. At least here in the north we don't see stuff like that much. More clean Nordic simplicity.
@Scott, I would like to chat more, but I gotta go. It's dinner time. See you around!

5:45 PM
Yeah it was mean to be along the lines of "1950s Americana" (very old demographic :)
no problem :)
Dont' eat too much! See ya!

1 hour later…
6:49 PM
@Scott too late! 😩
