@ktm5124 I risk repeating myself, but that sounds like a good question. I guess the direct Hreek loan is possible, but there can be other words too.
04:52
Perhaps also I can request a Latin word for truism, and to see if this concept existed back then. After all, a truism is a somewhat fuzzy idea, often more colloquial than logical.
There even seems to be two definitions of truism, a colloquial one and a philosophical one.
@ktm5124 Then it might make sense to ask two separate questions. I'm not sure. But I do like the question.
Right. I will probably take them one by one. Once this current question gets some answers, I'll think about asking other ones.

6 hours later…
10:45
I just read about Arminisaurus schuberti. I wonder if any of its prey species were named after Varus.

3 hours later…
13:53
@JoonasIlmavirta Hah. You're not quite over it yet, are you?
@Cerberus Nah, I was just reminded of the Varian defeat when I read the news article. If they name a predator (?) after Arminius, it would make sense to name some prey after Varus.
Perhaps humor is discouraged in taxonomy, no matter how much I would appreciate such references.

1 hour later…
15:03
@JoonasIlmavirta If you were reminded, that means you're still not over it!
I was actually reminded of the Dutch Arminius.
Whose defeat I am not over yet either.
15:26
@Cerberus I don't take it personally. I consider myself neither Germanic nor Italic.
Besides, the Romans would never have made it to Finland even if Varus had won.
Wise.
15:39
Wise not to come to Finland?
15:55
That, too.
But I meant, wise of you to consider yourself neither.
I think I can call this a successful day. My lecture went well without much preparation and I finally finished an article.
Well done!
That should give you enough satisfaction for weeks.
It was a revision of an article after peer review, not a completely new thing. But it's still relieving to get it off my hands.
16:31
Ah, you wrote it together with a Dutchman?
16:44
@Cerberus I did. We have two joint papers now and more on the way.
17:40
@JoonasIlmavirta Did you find his Dutchness weird?

1 hour later…
18:48
@Cerberus Not at all. He is detectably Dutch, but I don't find it weird.
@JoonasIlmavirta How do you detect it, besides his accent?
@Cerberus It's mainly the accent and occasional mentions of Dutch things.
He looks like he could be Dutch, but it doesn't really narrow it down to a single country.
19:04
I see.
I have to say I wouldn't be able to tell someone's country of origin by looks. Only like maybe which area of Europe.
A Dutchman might look English, Scandinavian, French, German.
Exactly. It's often hard to tell that precisely. And it's only a guess.
The accent is more reliable.
Yeah.
I am watching this documentary about anorexia.
And this English girl's accent sounded oddly Dutch to me.
Turned out she had lived in Holland until she was 6 years old or so.
Now she's like 25 and having lived in Oxford since then.
That explains it.
I'm not aware of any Dutch-sounding regional accents in the UK.
There are some similarities between certain sounds.
But not like her.
Even though other aspects of her accent are very...Oxonian.
It's only a few th's and d's.
Th'es?
It's hard to decline a consonant.
19:19
Quite!
