5:00 AM
You should have worn a ski suit.

i think when kids see me do math then realise "omg, if he can do it..."

i was banned from the olympics because they said we needed to wear clothing and i didn't want to.
this is why i am not an olympian.

i met a few girls in tahoe once who were naked except for boots & a small pack
(on their back, i mean)
i mean while skiing
otherwise the remark is less remarkable

One of my colleagues at UGA who was a terrific teacher could convince college algebra students he knew nothing and have them explain it to him.

5:02 AM
i have a very humdrum approach

In that case, Twink, there is no answer.

i mean, they were wearing a back on their back. whew

i just show up naked and whatever happens happens.

i used to go to the clothing optional area at the RSF
quieter, plus no tan lines
plus i am sortof european

@copper What do you say to that red line?

5:04 AM
muir beach was another hangou
@TedShifrin i am hoping it is a mistake otherwise it ruins my reasoning

Mine too.
My original “not enough info” is reinstated.

i visited the RSF exactly once while an undergraduate. i don't remember a clothing optional area.
you may have been at the bear's lair

i am withdrawing, back to the wine
yes, many years ago
i went there the day i met my research advisor for the first time

What is RSF?

not with him

5:06 AM
recreational sports facility.

recreational sports facility
bingo

between the field and the administrative buildings.

Oh. I used tennis and volleyball courts, no more.

there was no clothing optional area, copper just might have done that.

i met my advisor, we had some awkward words, another student said lets meet at the bear's lair.
there was behind the pool

5:07 AM
one time i met one of my students outside sproul hall. they were doing some kind of protest because of sweathouse labor for university merchandise. she was nude. she really wanted to talk to me about her issue and i was like, i can't do this.

i got hit on a few times at the rsf. unfortunately for me only once by a girl.

Aww …

i was so oblivious.
i was hey, lets grab a drink. i didn't realise
don't ask that when you are naked in the rsf locker rooms

Um …

different world

5:11 AM
middle aged women used to pick up on me in ben and nicks (when i was not middle aged). great bar.

growing up when we did stuff, judo, orienteering, etc, we (f+m) just stripped off & changed. no biggie

after 40, nobody is shy about anything and it is kind of a relief.

i linke b&ns
i was never terribly inhibited after about 10 yo.

one guy picked up on me there too. i ended up introducing him to someone and i think a good time was had by all.

usually the progression was, cute accent, have a drink, they realise what the hell...

5:12 AM
i think it's all on apps now.

i did dance at the white horse with some friends

i loved the white horse. that is/was a really good place.

i like(d) dancing. i don't care with whom i dance

I was way too shy in those days, probably saved my life cuz AIDS was starting ….

best was usually a wife whose husband doesn't like to dance

5:14 AM
one of my friends, that was like the only place he would go. so i'd join him and try to introduce him to people.

terrible time
the naked guy used to be a bouncer at a fairly nearby bar

i can't imagine the 80s/90s. my mom was a nurse and would come home with stories because she was unfiltered.
families always fussing around with who got to see a person while they were dying.
very appropriate for a 10-year-old i would think.

70s was more closeted and not quite so scary … who knew …

yeah. must have been tough.

it radicalized me in some way. it traumatized my mother because nurses didn't have control over who got to visit the rooms.
it really hurt her.
anyway, f--- em

5:18 AM
thankfully none of my friends were impacted directly.

And here we are with COVID and the same death phenomenon … just different targets.
Plenty of mine died.

there isn't the same societal judgement thing
sad time.

ted i am very sorry to hear that.

yep, sorry about that.

Now it’s stupidity of vax-refusers …

5:19 AM
there was an enormous loss and a lot of it was avoidable if only anyone could care about it.
somewhat like now but not quite.

Thank Reagan!

that bastard.
pardon my french

One reason he’s so beloved by the right.

hey, come on, he gave the troops a chance to visit ucb

As governor.

5:20 AM
leopard's spots

thank you guys

my third grade teacher lost her son to AIDS. one of my earliest memories of that epidemic was visiting his patch on the aids quilt.

@Twink you never answered

reagan as governor gassed my advisor once.
piece of s---. although i did like bedtime for bonzo.

i did vote for arnie :-)

5:23 AM
that was quite a ballot.
i voted for my dad's friend who was later imprisoned for bank fraud because of stuff that his father did.

he has some personal characteristics that i abhor, but he seemed fairly moderate
it was somehow reassuring to find out he had a kid with the house keeper
the kennedy's dropped him the moment that pr came out

one time the gallup people polled me and asked if i was less or more likely to vote for arnie because of the allegations about his housekeeper, and i said more likely, and the pollster actually laughed out loud.
his signature is on my phd diploma.

he's human
i must have Deukmejian

he was pretty good. better than a few of the followers.

i didn't become a citizen until 2001

5:27 AM
if i can make a pollster laugh out loud i think i missed my calling as a comedian.
we need to shut you out and keep you from robbing us of our taxes.

i never seem to fit the stereotype

what's the mathjax way™ to subscript a bmatrix (to show what basis it belongs to)?

:-) i believe i have paid many times over the average lifetime tax burden
plus created lots of jobs, some of which are still in place :-)

coming over, purporting to create jobs. telling jokes that go nowhere.

i want to get a refund of my non resident tuition, however :-)

5:29 AM
you actually do deserve that. that's nonsense.

i can see the justification, but in my case they were getting four years of pure engineering undiluted by breath requirements
plus my attainment was far from a drain on the tax payer

breath requirements? meaning the breathalyzer?
would have been worth it to regularly test an irishman

i have actually never been breathalsed

how does that go? i haven't had that happen
i've been pepper sprayed but not breathalyzed

i have been slapped by the top consular authority in sf
i have never been invited back to her parties
i used to be in the 'know'
i met mary robinson
i introduced my wife to her

5:33 AM
wow i underscored a bmatrix and it subscripted the bmatrix

at the irish cultural center which, appropriately, is across the street from the zooo

who wouldve thought

it's actually a part of the zoo

we used to go there to watch matches at 6am
and have an irish breakfast. the pinnacle of irish cuisine
potatoes, bacon, tomatoes, eggs, what more could you ask for
ohh, sausages. not the healthy variety

irish cultural center. that's funny. where you go, set off a flare, and beat somebody with a potato shovel.

5:34 AM
black & white pud
i miss those simpler days

i don't mean to be offensive, this is just how i am and there is no way of turning it off.

its the scorpion & the frog

exactly.
this just is what it is.

did you ever watch the crying game?

yes.
you cannot spoil the ending because i know it.

5:38 AM
i really enjoyed the movie. totally caught me off guard, though i remember thinking is that a 6 o'clock shadow
that was the first time i heard the scorpion & the frog fable

the director has done other interesting stuff although maybe not as good.

stephen rea is a pretty good actor

he's amazing. i love him.

slighlty reminded me of some unsavoury characters growing up
small, wirey, deadly

i had an eccentric aunt who gave me weird books of children's stories that may have been appropriate.
she recognized i was the scorpion, i think.

5:42 AM
a lot of old irish stories are not the bay area sort of kiddie stories.

apparently both my sun and moon signs are scorpio so this explains that. i know exacrly why the scorpion did that.

scorpions fascinate me
i found one in aboot once
justified checking for the rest of my life
albeit it probably would just of hurt for a while, nothing too serious
but its a good story
really, i am checking for earwigs.

i just opt not to travel. i don't think fellow scorpions would respect a scorpio.
i hate earwigs. we didn't have a clothes dryer growing up and they would get in anything we hung outside.

yeah. it a weakness for me. i can deal with snakes, etc,. but an earwig. uugh.

jerusalem crickets would also wander into our laundry.
those are creepy animals.

5:45 AM
potato bugs
they are but the move slowly. i just move them outside
they are pretty huge

i remember once one was rustling around under my dresser and i could hear it. it was no fun at all. you're not supposed to hear an insect rustling.

time to hit the sack! gn!

goodnight.

6:04 AM
@robjohn I might be wrong about this, but I remember discussing this problem with you before: http://mathb.in/61239

The part where I write $\frac{1}{2\pi |\lambda_n|}\int_{-\pi}^\pi f(t) D_n(-t)\, dt \ge \frac{m\|D_n\|_1}{|\lambda_n|}$ isn't correct, since $\|D_n\|_1$ would require $|D_n(-t)|$ in the integral, and we have the same thing without the modulus. Could you please take a look and see how to fix it?
Might've discussed it with Oliver or copper instead, not sure.
In any case, I'd appreciate any help!

Mornin'.
@leslietownes That is what is known as a Yeet nopicus, roots yeet and nope. It's purpose is to be gawked in horror at and make you say "nope" before you yeet it a thousand miles away with the power of a pro baseball athlete that arises from the power of adrenaline.

1:20 PM
@copper.hat What is in this sack, and why are you hitting it?

How to make this even more ominous: It's a nightly event.

Q: Probability of at least 3 people sharing a common birthday

satan 29What is the probability that 3 or more people share a common birthday, in a group of 160 people? Approach: Let $X$ denote the no. of people sharing a common birthday. Then, we have $P(X\geq 3)= 1-[P(X=0)+P(X=2)]$. The cases for $X=0$ and $X=2$ can be dealt together by using the following argument...

any ideas with whats possibly going wrong?
