@Alizter You say that is obvious, but the 'obviously wrong' thing is EXACTLY how it works in the US
You can get by with taking as few/easy math courses as possible and take the most advanced courses in other subjects

I have no idea why Harvard is so famous. Maybe they have leading mathematicians, yes, but undergrad curriculum is another story...

Haha @Jasper I am currently at a top 10 engineering school in the US and the caliber of undergraduate students seems rather low for that ranking. I suppose it must be based on other things.

@skullpatrol I'm very curious about the best solution MSE can provide when giving a bounty of 500 points. Well, that is just a note, it's not mandatory (it's about computing limits by using basic elements of geometry).

How do you solve the following equation for complex z: |z+a|+|z-a|=2|c| where a and c are also complex, ?
 
@Psycho_pr I think it's an ellipse with foci $a$ and $-a$.
 
That makes sense as |z-a|=r is a circle
but is there a way I could see this algebraically?
 
You can express it as a quadratic form in $x$ and $y$ where $z=x+iy$.

I guess one thing would be good to do from the beginning: say that we could always rotate the plane so that a is real, so that at least you can work with one variable less, right?
 
That may help. I am not entirely sure how much it will ease computation though.
