Let's say you have vectors on $\Bbb Z \times \Bbb Z$

So every vector points to a coordinate on an integer grid

Now for two vectors, x, y in this vector space

if you take the 1-norm of x-y, you get the manhattan distance between vectors

The manhattan distance returns 1 if the vectors are within a standard cardinal 4-neighborhood of one another -- ie above, below, to the left, or to the right.

Is there such a norm that returns 1 if the vectors are in an 8-neighborhood: north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, northwest

See if this works. Old John told me that there was someone asking about a^2 + b^3 + c^6 in chat. Somehow I managed to find this one. The inclusion of the number 2012^2012 tells me that this is from an ongoing contest of some kind. I gave an answer on MO, but not such that a high-school student would be able to turn it in as his own work. If anyone knows how to locate the contest by Google or other?.

I wish books were all typo free.
