10:00 AM
@JayeshBadwaik On an unrelated note, may I ask how many girlfriends you ever had?

@JasperLoy 2 serious.

How many "not serious"? "Hmm, can't remember."

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I had no girlfriends ever. Also, I think I am too old to have any more. So I will stay single.
3

@JasperLoy For life? Hmm.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Probably, unless some girl falls in love with me, which is quite unlikely.

10:06 AM
@JasperLoy Ahh. Do not worry about that. Its not that unlikely. Just get out of your shell and you just might see.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Many of my friends are married with kids, finished their PhDs etc. Some suicided, some are living overseas.

user19161
I am the worst of them all, alive and miserable. It is hell on earth.

@JasperLoy Yaa you turtle, get out there and live a life :-D

user19161
But I like to think that after hell there comes heaven.

user19161
There can be miracles when you believe.

10:10 AM
How old are you?

@JasperLoy Speaking of motivational sentences, the darkest time before the dawn is the best time to admire and bask in the solitudinous glory of city night lights.

user19161
@skullpatrol I am 31.

@JasperLoy Also, its not necessarily better off. Sometimes you may have to make compromises in relationships which you do not really want. And its not always hunky-dory. Its just different.

@JasperLoy There are plenty of girls 30 to 40 looking to settle down.

@JasperLoy Is Singapore as conservative as other Asian countries?

10:13 AM
Or even ones whose marriage didn't work out. So like I said:

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Well, I have only lived in one place, but from what little I know about the world, it is a rather "conservative" place still, however otherwise it may seem.

4 mins ago, by skullpatrol
@JasperLoy Yaa you turtle, get out there and live a life :-D

user19161
@skullpatrol Hmm, true. But that's not too important now compared to other things.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Let's just say that I definitely don't want to be born here in my next life.

user19161
Hey my high school is a pretty happening one. There are many people who died due to suicide, accidents, illnesses etc.

10:17 AM
@JasperLoy Yup. I was going to ask when you said, many of your friend suicided.
Why?
Accidents I can understand. Illnesses I can understand.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Some went nuts, like me. That's one reason.

@JasperLoy Nuts in high school?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Yes, or later on in life.

user19161
This kind of thing happens over time you know. There is no clear starting point.

@JasperLoy Hmm. Yup. However, you are not going to commit suicide, okay? Reading this now.

user19161
10:20 AM
I can understand why more and more are going nuts. There are too many stupid evil people here.

@JasperLoy How much of it is academic?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik You mean due to work stress? I would say it is mostly conflict with other people, not work stress. From my feel, no stats of course.

@JasperLoy No, I meant, the (home)work stress /performance stress in high school, college.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Yes, I understand. Same answer.

@JasperLoy Okay. Conflict with other people? You have gangs around there?

user19161
10:24 AM
It's hard to live in a society where people compare gays to paedophiles and psychopaths, I won't name who.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Well, you know. Relationship problem, family problem, etc etc.

user19161
Even I (not gay) was traumatized when I heard that idiot talk about gays like that.

user19161
If I were there to speak, I would debate him till he is too ashamed to even step down.

user19161
There is this other story. I have a school mate who died, I won't name who.

user19161
His parents went to see someone to request for something.

user19161
10:28 AM
They said they were traumatized by his death.

user19161
That guy said "What traumatic? After three months no more traumatic"

user19161
What an asshole!

@JasperLoy Yup.
But other people can say anything you know. You should not get affected so much that it hampers you, you know. You should get concerned, you should not ignore it, but you should not let it affect your mental balance.
Yesterday a girl was shot in Pakistan for her refusal to stop going to school. Here, in some parts of India, similar rights are still denied to people and people do die.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I think the caste system is stupid.

In some places, there is a mafia similar in danger to the mexican mafia. We call them naxals here.

user19161
10:30 AM
Also, I seem to have read about places where people burn the wife if the husband dies?

user19161
Even the Buddha said that most people will go to the lower realms after this life, because man is just too evil.

@JasperLoy The practise is called Sati. It was specifically made illegal in 1800's. And I haven't heard of anything similar happening in my life. But yes, it was there.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Is there any in the last few decades?

@JasperLoy No. None have been reported. I think there was 1 voluntary effort. The wife walked into the pyre herself, but people rescued her and took her to hospital.
See this.

user19161
So you see, I cannot say I respect the rules, regulations or laws of any place. Now, I only listen to my own moral conscience.

user19161
10:35 AM
Again, I want to say, I am sick and tired of the stupidity and evil of mankind.

@JasperLoy Hmm. And you would ignore all the good things that are there too? Just for the existence of bad ones?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I am not saying there is no good. I am just saying there is too much evil. I have seen too many stupid and evil people who think they are smart and kind. They abuse others and then act as if others abused them.

user19161
And I am personally involved in many of these incidents. I could explain to these people what I actually think, but it would take them 9000 years to see the light.

@JasperLoy Or you can just ignore those people and go on with your life? I agree it is difficult when we are still small kids and hence, we do not have enough conviction in ourselves. But as we grow older, we can make such decisions. Can we not?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik You see, I once wanted to change the world, or at least the society around me. But then I got all of my own problems which debilitated me. Now I just want to heal and live my own life, ignoring society.

10:43 AM
@JasperLoy Good. Yup. Changing the world is too big a burden to take. :-) Just do what you think makes you happy and do that. Don't care what other people say.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik That's why Buddha came. He did his job. Now I don't need to do anything. =)

user19161
Hey @skull no need to remove that. I will answer you now.

user19161
Yes, I have. But I need to get well, go to grad school and then find a job somewhere so that I can stay there.

Read "Lajja" by Taslima Nasrin. What happens there is relatively recent. In that book, there is a certain section about what happens to men who defy or try to oppose the evils being committed by the chieftain.
After reading about that, try to think about how can a person remain strong in such humiliation. I hope you will find your answer there.
Or you can read "Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseni.

@JasperLoy That^ is my point; you can read all you want, but if you don't get out there and live life nobody is going to help you find that special somebody.

user19161
10:55 AM
@skullpatrol Yes. Somebody special like skull. =)

@JasperLoy Don't MOCK me, I'm serious.

user19161
@skullpatrol I am not mocking you. I am just joking with you, and also saying that you are quite a nice person as well.

OK, OK.
:)

user19161
Good, good.

Yes, yes.

user19161
10:58 AM
I am actually in my friend's clinic now. Waiting for him to finish so just hanging out here.

user19161
I guess rob is probably zzz.

@JayeshBadwaik No offense Jay :-)

@skullpatrol What offense?

about your readings

Ohh. Hmm. I did not even notice that it was an offense. So....
Anyway, you are correct, readings can only get you so far!

11:02 AM
Those are all excellent recommendations...

@skullpatrol yup, they are.

@JasperLoy Get out there and live life!!!

user19161
@skullpatrol I thought you were talking about my math books. =)

@JasperLoy Remember: We were born to be alive :-D

11:55 AM
hi @OldJohn

Hi @skullpatrol

@OldJohn How's it going?

Fine, thanks - just back from the gym, and getting ready to go to a photography group
How are thngs with you?

@OldJohn Fine thanks, just gave Jaser Loy a lecture about life.

@skullpatrol Yes - just been reading it :)

12:00 PM
@OldJohn What do you think?

@skullpatrol Far too philosophical for me at the moment!

@OldJohn The above YouTube link summarizes my opinion :-)

@skullpatrol Hmm - not my style of music, I'm afraid

@OldJohn Do you agree with the message?

@skullpatrol Seems a bit trite - there is more to life than just living

12:06 PM
@OldJohn True, but it should begin with living, no?

@skullpatrol Yes - but isn't that a fairly empty statement?

@OldJohn I view it as more of a reflexive statement like a=a.

@skullpatrol yep

@OldJohn Is a=a an empty statement?

well - does it tell you anything new?

12:13 PM
It tells me: If a is a real number, then a=a.

But what use is the statement?

Proofs...

I have never seen a proof where the step "a=a" is a vital step
4

really?

but I must go - back after photography

12:15 PM
later

later

:-)
@robjohn Have you ever seen a proof where the step "a=a" is a vital step?

1:17 PM
hi @WillieWong

hi sukill
skull, sorry.

@WillieWong Have you ever seen a proof where the step "a=a" is a vital step?

High school mathematics has it all the time, especially in the "textbook" demonstrations of trigonometric or polynomial identities.

@WillieWong Thanks :-D

And of course, in axiomatic theories like NBG or Morse-Kelley, the equality sign is defined by $X = Y$ is a shorthand for the sentence $\forall z(z\in X \leftrightarrow z\in Y)$.

1:27 PM
@WillieWong Is the statement: infinity = infinity true?

What is your definition of infinity?

endless

* ahem * mathematical definition.

Greater than any pre-assigned number.
@WillieWong is that mathematical enough?

A decent discussion can be found in the appendix of Kelley's General Topology.

1:40 PM
Thanks for the reference :)

You are welcome. And ciao.

later

2 hours later…
4:09 PM
@skullpatrol nope. Am I to assume you have such a proof?
Heh, he's not here.

Hi @robjohn

@WillieWong That depends on how you're using infinity. In the usual analytic sense, used with limits, etc. skullpatrol's definition works (infinity is a concept, not a number or element of a set). When talking about the one-point compactification of $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$, then there is a definite element. For set theory, it doesn't because there is not one infinity there.
@RajeshD Howdy.

4:25 PM
Since there are 2 mods here at the moment, maybe I can ask this.
We have not heard anything from any of the mods in the discussion about blacklisting algebra tag. I believe that after the point that the issue is discussed by MSE users, the rest is up to moderators and their communication with SE. Is that correct?
(I just wanted to make sure that this did not go unnoticed by moderators.)

Hello!

user19161
4:45 PM
Just watched The Avengers.

user19161
I see Willie was here, that is quite rare.

I have never seen almost anyone using IE (among the people I have interacted with.) I wonder how IE is still around 40% of market share. I actually cannot remember a single case.

@JasperLoy Good!

user19161
@Charlie Have you watched it?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Because they use it at the workplace!

4:48 PM
@JasperLoy yup

user19161
@Charlie Hmm, the girl is very pretty. I will be dreaming of her tonight...

@JasperLoy No, even at workplace, almost none of my friends use IE.

@JasperLoy hmm

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I think Firefox is better than IE which is better than Chrome. =)

@JasperLoy Start watching "How I Met Your Mother" then.

4:56 PM
:D

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Actually I have not touched Windows for so long that if I switch to Windows I might just want to use IE. It really is improving thanks to all the competition.

@JasperLoy For me, it will always be that one browser I can have a good laugh at. Even it becomes better than any other browser in future. IE6 would be something I would laugh at forever and ever.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik What's funny?

@JasperLoy How bad it was. :P :P

@JasperLoy Jas...Don't lose your hope..you're a good man!

user19161
5:04 PM
@JayeshBadwaik Actually Chrome is something I would laugh at forever. One, it does not have not save history mode unless we go incognito. Two, it does not load chat or mathjax properly on my Debian.

user19161
@Charlie Hehe. Are your lessons finished for the week?

@JasperLoy yup

@JasperLoy See your mail.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Hehe. And yes, you can really send me ANYTHING in email. I am very open minded. =)

@JasperLoy Hehe. I thought you might like it. :P
=)

5:10 PM
mystery

user19161
Yes, we have a graph of secrets!

user19161
Very complex, like the Erdos graph.

5:40 PM
hi folks
what's going on here?

nothing...

mysterious indeed.

6:17 PM
$9\leq (a+b+c)(\frac {1}{a}+\frac {1}{b}+\frac {1}{c})$
@Jayesh

Hint: Apply A.M. G.M. Inequality.

6:49 PM
Hi all

OldJohn!

@OldJohn Hi!

@JayeshBadwaik I'm not totally here - England are playing football tonight :)

@OldJohn Ohh. Against?

San Marino :))))))

6:52 PM
@OldJohn Hahaha.

@JayeshBadwaik :)
If we don't win, I am going to start supporting Mongolia

@OldJohn :P :P

@JayeshBadwaik Then an early night - we fly to Bratislava in the morning

@OldJohn Ohh. Last time, you guys won there 4-0 (slovakia I mean) right?

@JayeshBadwaik Dunno - I can never remember football scores ... other than beating Germany 5-1 a few years ago :)))

6:57 PM
@OldJohn That was so so long ago!! All I remember now is the 4-1 score line in Germany World Cup which could have been 2-2 at half time if that lampard goal would have been given.

@JayeshBadwaik Ah yes - that was a very controversial one ...

But yes, a terrific win, is a terrific win. That was a sweet win for England. 5-1 .

Kick off!

Enjoy!!
I think I will watch too!

7:18 PM
@JayeshBadwaik Jay

@PeterTamaroff Hola!

@PeterTamaroff Yes? Hola on the side. :-|

@Charlie Hey
@JayeshBadwaik I'm trying to prove that if $A$ is infinite and bounded, then every limit point of $A$ satisfies $\underline{\lim}A\leq x \leq \overline{\lim}A$
Now, what I'm thinking in proving the contrapositive, or proving it by contradiction.
I already proved $\overline{\lim}A$ and $\underline{\lim}A$ are limit points of $A$.

@PeterTamaroff $\overline{\lim}$ is $\limsup$ I assume?

@JayeshBadwaik Yes, it is the infimum of all almost upper bounds of $A$.

7:30 PM
@PeterTamaroff Okay.
You can prove it both ways I think.
I am thinking more in the line of
"If A is an infinite subset of a compact subset K of a topological space, then A has limit point in K." And the set $[\liminf A, \limsup A ]$ is compact.
:6466596 It is a closed interval?

Ignore me! - I am talking rubbish as usual

@OldJohn Get yourself together!
=)

@OldJohn more probably, football is having its effect. :P
@PeterTamaroff OldJohn is watching an England football match.

@JayeshBadwaik That's why I don't watch football.

Yeah - too much football - and we are now winning 2-0 :)))

7:42 PM
@OldJohn Already??
@PeterTamaroff You are missing out stuff, dude!

@JayeshBadwaik Let me rephrase: "I don't usually watch football."

@PeterTamaroff \o/

@Charlie Oh, no! Charlie is drowning.

@PeterTamaroff Ohh. Me neither, not usually. And anyway, India is very low in football. I only cheer for a particular club.

@PeterTamaroff ... I'm happy, Pedro...

7:44 PM

@PeterTamaroff Hehehe. Hahaha. Hehehe.

@PeterTamaroff Good good!

^ That was an SOS laugh. (For those who know morse code)

Morse... I usually think of this when I hear Morse...

8:02 PM
Best comment on a football match: "I don't see the point of San Marino" :)))

8:13 PM
@OldJohn LOL.

@OldJohn Who is San Marino?

@skullpatrol He is a guy who is a country in itself.

The rich guy who owns united?

@skullpatrol A small country - surrounded by Italy

@skullpatrol That are the glazers.

8:20 PM
@skullpatrol It is the oldest constitucional republic!

@Skull Hey!!

Hello everybody :-D
Done^ just the way I would do it.

:|

@skullpatrol :-)

@Charlie What's wrong Chucky?

8:24 PM
chucky?

she probably did not see what I had written.

@Charlie short for Charlie

@skullpatrol Give me your phone number. :P :P ;-)

@skullpatrol was it for Jayesh?

@Charlie no

@Argon Hey buddy!

@Charlie What's up?

8:37 PM

@Skull we could sing songs more often, don't you think?

@Charlie Yes.

8:42 PM
wanna choose a track?
I suggest one

8:59 PM
@skullpatrol do you like "Separate ways?"

Yup

You must not be impolite and ask.

9:29 PM
If 2 functions are not differentiable in all domain, what can we say about their Wronskian?
@Jasper Heeyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

isn't the wronskian defined in terms of derivatives?

user19161
@Charlie Hello. Hmm, don't try to extract anything from skull, wait a year more. You can try once a year.
2

@anon yep

user19161
If Wronskian is defined in terms of derivatives, then Wronskian does not exist. QED.

@JasperLoy Are you sure?

user19161
9:34 PM
@Charlie I forgot Wronskians, but if it is just a definition with derivatives, and these derivatives do not exist, then certainly it does not exist.

user19161
Not really "not exist", but it does not make sense to even talk about it.

I see...

user19161
Note that I have not claimed I know what a Wronskian is.

In mathematics, the Wronskian is a determinant introduced by and named by . It is used in the study of differential equations, where it can sometimes be used to show that a set of solutions is linearly independent. Definition The Wronskian of two functions f and g is W(f,g) = fg′–gf ′. More generally, for n real- or complex-valued functions f1, ..., fn, which are n − 1 times differentiable on an interval I, the Wronskian W(f1, ..., fn) as a function on I is defined by : W(f_1, \ldots, f_n) (x)= \begin{vmatrix} f_1(x) & f_2(x) & \cdots & f_n(x) \\ f_1'(x) & ...

user19161
@Charlie The functions have to satisfy some differentiability criteria as you can see there. That is necessary to even talk about the Wronskian.

9:38 PM
seems a bit like asking what the age is of the local zoo's unicorn.

I am this zoo's unicorn.

Don't be so compact, Skull

laconic?

Compact

user19161
He is closed and bounded and in Euclidean space, so by Heine Borel he is compact.

9:40 PM
@Skull are you angry with me?

phew...

are you angry with me?

No.
You have your rights.

sigh...
we all have rights

9:42 PM
but I'm biting myself of curiosity

you like the 80's don't you? IMHO it's the best decade.Musically speaking
@Jasper How are you?

@Charlie I'll agree, because I'm agreeable :-D

:)
Excuse me Gentlemen, I shall Leave.
Have a Good night and Good day!
