@badp Plug in phone, update drivers, select dll
@fredley Windows just installed whatever drivers it pleased
@badp so replace those. You know drivers right?
<___<
I'm opening Device Manager. I'm sure the thing's in there somewhere
@badp you are better than this @badp, come on
I don't normally mess with this stuff and am content with stock drivers
13:02
@badp I thought it did back that stuff up...and automatically? Also should'nt any file explorer, without root, be able to reach most files?
At any rate
@badp you are a gamer?!
Anything that saves on the SD card for sure
I unzipped the thing in a folder
@BenBrocka Android doesn't do that, at least not for me for 3.0
13:03
I right clicked on Nexus 7 from Device Manager
I picked "Update device software"
I pointed it to the folder
It likely looked for an .inf file, found none, so it gave up

Q: Titanium Backup vs Android data backup

Ben BrockaSo somewhere along the line Android got a native "backup my data" option but I haven't gotten to use it. I used to use Titanium Backup and it was the main reason I rooted my phone, but I don't have Titanium or Root anymore. Is there any significant difference in what's backed up between the nat...

I had to go through the whole process with installing CM10, and nothing was backed up
Sounds like it's mostly authentication data that's missing. I also forget when they started doing that
It's easier to pretend nothing existed before 4.0
...so I'm stumped
@BenBrocka Yes. Those were dark times.
13:05
Okay, there was another Nexus 7 item in the list under Portable Devices
but Windows snubs those drivers
I'll have to force it I suppose
...uninstalling the device removed it from the device list; scanning for devices again reused the drivers I just uninstalled
well?
@badp You aren't competent enough to earn the privilege of owning your data. It's for the best.
...
if you're struggling this much, maybe you shouldn't root your device
It's basically eugenics for data
@kalina I don't want to!
I have to!
13:09
you're not capable of doing so
so don't
it will only end in tears
@badp Then your course of action is clear: try harder
@fredley This is what I'm trying to do
you may think these comments are unhelpful, but you're wrong - they're actually very helpful comments
2
incidentally, why do you have to?
13:11
@kalina unlock tethering.
@badp Why not just go full Cyanogen?
@fredley I could but I've just stumbled at this one step and now I'm the biggest noob on the face of Earth ;)
Also, isn't tethering unlocked on a nexus 7 by default? Pretty sure it is on mine. Why would Google cripple their own device?
@fredley it is not unlocked
@badp are you sure?
13:12
@badp I think you're wrong
@fredley burn!
sigh
@badp Settings > More > Tethering and portable hotspot?
@fredley "oh there it is..." :blush:
2
@kalina I set people on fire in classier ways
13:14
@fredley There is no such item under More. You can go there directly with a setting shortcut. This is the result:
@badp Looks broken, send it back
@badp see, so it is there!
Can we go back to the part where I'm not a friggin' moron? :P
@badp no, I like this a lot more
@fredley it is not broken; that's the way Nexus 7 devices are
I have already sent it back anyway
13:15
@badp Wait a sec, is it a 3G N7?
@fredley yes
kicking me from chat for pointing out the obvious! how rude
@badp Right ok.
somebody is awfully short tempered today
13:16
@kalina hey, I liked the part where I kicked you a lot more! ;)
3
@badp I think kicking somebody for pointing out the obvious is a little too far
@RavenDreamer Yo.
@Fluttershy 'lo
@kalina It's for your own good, trust me. You may find it's an unhelpful comment, but it really is
but since you've already been defeated by an inanimate object, I won't push it further
13:17
@badp is sux0rz
I mean, it's not every day it turns out the entire internet is better than you at something
@badp's computer competency < that of a 13 year old
inb4 Android Hell. >_>
why does @fredley never get kicked, I certainly wasn't that insulting
@Fluttershy ironically, Android hell is exactly the right place for this conversation
@fredley that guide actually skisps the drivers part
13:18
since @badp is having hell with Android
@kalina I have an expired get out of mod free card somewhere
and Android is winning
@kalina because he's trying to help in between the banter
All those posts @badp sent to Android Hell, the Androids are now taking their revenge...
@badp I did try and help, and told you to put it back in the box and return it to the store, that's the best advise I can give to somebody who can't follow a guide!
13:20
@kalina It's not an option, as any 5yo would understand.
I've owned the device for more than 7 days.
So, installing manually the drivers from the "Add Hardware" thing requires an *.inf file, as I'd previously guessed
that has been pretty standard in windows for a decade or so
I made it to work.
Fully dressed.
I regret it already.
@OrigamiRobot There's nothing stopping you from taking your pants off once you reach work
@badp apparently your problem is caused by your carrier
13:23
tethering should be enabled as standard
@YiJiang'sEvilClone It's cold in here.
@kalina It is, jailbreak the device. problem sovled
@TylerShads I'm trying not to lose all the app data in the process
iphone or droid?
Nexus 7 3G
So I installed Carbon on both my Android and Windows 8
For Carbon on Windows 8 to work though I need to install some drivers
13:25
from what i remember on my old android, it didnt delete things when I rooted it
Windows refuses to install those drivers, even if I follow the instructions here
@badp Windows 8 is your problem
@Fluttershy Installing TMI is irrelevant of the source of the game.
@fredley I'm on W8 right now, once you modify it properly, its not too bad.
@badp link me this carbon thing, I will see if I can make it work on w8
13:26
@Fluttershy Yes
@OrigamiRobot Cool. So, we're offering support for pirated games then?
@Fluttershy It doesn't matter whether it's pirated or not.
@Fluttershy I removed it from the question, so that it's a legit one, and left a comment.
@kalina It'll get stuck here
It's irrelevant to the question.
13:27
I think we've had this discussion before, and the solution was that @OrigamiRobot was wrong.
@OrigamiRobot Yarp it is. Modding a pirated version will almost certainly break it.
@Wipqozn It was.
@fredley I'm saying answer the question for the non-pirated version and it's still a valid question.
@fredley So close that question as off-topic, which it is, and then ask and self-answer another question.
13:27
If someone is asking for help with a pirated game we delete the question. No exceptions. Sure, we can play ignorance when we can't be sure.... but when they state they pirated the game right in the question we can't do that.

@fredley I'm saying answer the question for the non-pirated version and it's still a valid question.
@OrigamiRobot Then someone with a valid copy of the game having the same problem can ask.
@Wipqozn What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
@OrigamiRobot Geese are stupid.
13:28
@badp yep, it was the driver part that I was going to help you with
They're also jerks.
@Wipqozn And they poop everywhere.
@Wipqozn They are from Canada, so...
@Fluttershy Just like Goats!
@Wipqozn Goat poop is just tiny pellets. Goose poop is like human poop. And it stains sidewalks.
@badp there is a .inf in that, does windows not find it?
I see four files in there
NOTICE.txt, WdfCoInstaller01009.dll, winusbcoinstaller2.dll, WUDFUpdate_01009.dll
erm
redownloads
13:30
I see a folder
with 2 more folders and 4 files including a .inf
oh. I skipped too fast to the amd64 folder
and each of those 2 folders contain 4 more files
so what you're saying is you couldn't find the inf for the driver because you triple clicked
That explains it.
@kalina no, I just saw "amd64" and skipped directly to that and then forgot that I did.
@fredley: I've rolled back your edit. It was invalid because you removed the pirated topic, which is why it should be closed. The fact it was removed doesn't mean it still shouldn't be deleted. You're just hiding the evidence.
So yeah, entirely my brain fart.
13:31
I want to scroll up and find a suitable comment but I suspect you're probably feeling pretty silly already
Your answer also doesn't make sense if you take out the pirated comment, since you actually tell him to download the valid version of the game.
anyway congrats, now you can install driver!
I'll blame WinRAR
@Wipqozn I didn't realise at the time. I only realised later on.
installs from INF file directly
13:32
@badp PEBKAC
If any question that can apply to pirated games it "supporting piracy" then most of our questions support piracy.
@Wipqozn I now know what 'anjocaido' is
@OrigamiRobot N...No
@Wipqozn That's what @Fluttershy is saying.
Once the question is asked, it is not the asker's personal question anymore.
13:33
@OrigamiRobot No, I'm not. Twisting my words isn;t helping your case at all. It's just making you sound unreasonable.
A question where user states they want help with their pirated copy of he game is a question that supports piracy.
That's not what supporting piracy is.
I uningnored OrigamiRobot because of the amount of people disagreeing with him at the moment
Providing support for something that happens to be pirated is not the same as supporting piracy.
@OrigamiRobot yeah, no.
@OrigamiRobot That's not what I'm saying at all.
13:35

I'm saying that this question was very obviously about a pirated game. We delete it. End of story.

@Fluttershy Agree
@OrigamiRobot is wrong

@Wipqozn This is the statement I agree with
Stating in the question "hey guyz I stole this" and then editing it out and answering it is supporting piracy
13:35
@OrigamiRobot What part of the damn FAQ do you not understand? Support for pirated games. That's what we do not allow, and that is what this question was about.

Not supporting piracy. Support for pirated games.
It is completely irrelevant whether or not the question could relate to a legitimate copy of the game

@OrigamiRobot Welcome to my ignore list.
13:36
Is there a reasonable doubt that the answer will difference as a result of the "jailbreak"?
christ, stop linking huge nested posts
@OrigamiRobot @badp Androids
Typically we use that clause to shut off technical issues questions like "HALP ME CRACK DON'T WORK"
It's just silly for somebody to mention that otherwise, unless you think the DRM just pretends not working and instead is messing up with game mechanics à la Mirror's Edge
@badp There's no way to know. It also doesn't matter. If the user states they pirated the game, delete the question. No exceptions.
Is the problem something which a player with a legit copy of Minecraft will face?
13:39
If I had pirated Diablo 3, answering this question would not be supporting piracy.
@Wipqozn I don't see a problem with that, honestly, it's an entirely reasonable stance to take, I'm just saying that helping the asker in general is only a side effect of the site
If a question on the site only helps the asker, we close it anyway
If somebody pirates a game and comes to this site for a question we don't put a paywall between him and his answer
@Wipqozn Then they ask it again under a different name (or just google the answer). The answers are meant for everyone that looks at them, the vast majority of which is not the one user that asked.
@badp This.
On the other hand
We aren't running out of question IDs
We can easily delete that question and have somebody else with the same problem and a legit copy of the game reask it
That's not going to stop me from asking questions from Earthbound anyway, even if the game never published in Europe :P

Q: How do you install Minecraft mods on a Mac?

CamrogersI've seen videos for Minecraft mods which add features like oil, pipes and guns. Where can I find these mods, and how do I install them on a Mac?

13:41
@badp Which is what we should do. Especially when the asker makes it so damn obvious they pirated it.
I'll just avoid mentioning I'm playing it on an Emulator.
Without the pirate comment it's just a duplicate.
IT can only not be a duplicate if the piracy comment makes it unique, which means it should be deleted.
@Fluttershy Okay, but it's kind of like an arbitrary hoop
@Wipqozn then it should be closed as a dupe
If we're going to close it as a dup, we should just delete it anyways since he wants support for piracy. WHy bother keeping the question around?
because dupes help with google juice
13:43
I am not arguing about policy. All I am saying is a question that mentions piracy is not automatically asking for support of said piracy.
Edit out piracy references > close as dupe > punitive finger waving at OP > everyone's happy?
"HI I JUST GOT SERIUS SAM THREE BUT WHEN I PLAY THE FIRST LEVEL A PURPLE GUY COMES AND SHOOTS ME HOW DO I DEFET IT?"
"He didn't explicitly say he pirated the game, so let's allow this question!"
@badp It helps if you mention that's an anti-piracy measure built into the game.
13:45
A: "To defeat the guy get a better crack or buy the actual game."
@Powerlord That's the point I'm making. Deciding whether or not the "no piracy" clause applies based on whether the guy admits or not to piracy is silly
@badp Thank you.
@badp Not if they're basically word for word dupes, which is what tends to happen when you strip out the pirated game nonsense from questions that are otherwise valid.
There are such things as dupes bad enough to just not be worth keeping around.
I don't even know what the original question is, so I wouldn't know
If the result of stripping out "Oh by the way I pirated the game" is a bad dupe, as opposed to a useful dupe, there's no point in doing it.
If the question is only a problem due to piracy, it's supporting piracy. If it's a normal game problem where the piracy is tangential, it's not supporting piracy.

The question is:

Q: How To Apply Mod On Minecraft Offline Mac

user47585How to apply your mod to minecraft offline on a mac ? please help me , i have downloaded too many items mod but i don't know how to apply it. I Have downloaded minecraft by anjocaido for free.

Q: How do you install Minecraft mods on a Mac?

CamrogersI've seen videos for Minecraft mods which add features like oil, pipes and guns. Where can I find these mods, and how do I install them on a Mac?

Now that I look at the specific questions I'd say that the -3 question is too much work to salvage and I'll close and delete it
It's literally not worth our time, too many problems.
@OrigamiRobot Right, but if stripping out the 'Oh by the way I'm a pirate', means you end up with a word for word dupe, which it appears to be, then why are we bothering to do that?
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm not arguing for this particular question.
@Fluttershy this pretty much, it's not that the question is valid, it's that the asker advertised they had pirated it
For the generic case I agree with @OrigamiRobot for once
Morning, Bridge
13:52
(which makes me happy, I like agreeing with people)
@LessPop_MoreFizz I am arguing against "any mention of piracy == supporting piracy"
@SaintWacko morning
@OrigamiRobot I don't like helping anyone who pirates minecraft
@badp Surely a sign of the end times.
Now if it was an EA game...
13:53
Okay, now to get the backup off the device
I still wish I had just pirated CnC4
@SaintWacko Well, lots of question can apply to pirated copies, so you are one way or another.
The pirated version is superior to the paid version
@badp So it worked, yay?
@YiJiang'sEvilClone I hope so! I have no way to figure that out until I restore it.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'd be more okay with that if Dark Souls wasn't $20 cheaper.
I need to get Dark Souls
I like hard games
@Fluttershy Listen man, you've gotta pay some kind of penalty for making such a poor decision.
@SaintWacko Yes you do. Warning: It pretty much requires a good gamepad.
It is the game that made me buy one.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I think the punishment of playing Dark Souls is penalty enough. =P
@LessPop_MoreFizz Xbox 360 controller good enough?
13:56
Not that Dark Souls isn't an excellent game. Just that it's so freaking hard.
@SaintWacko Ideal.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I don't know about the expansion, but Dead Island was pretty fun.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Perfect. I have five :P
@badp Ah, a link! :D
13:57
@OrigamiRobot I'm 30 minutes late, but you were right and everyone arguing with you was wrong.
@Sterno I was arguing with him and agreeing with him!
@badp I guess that meant you were wright.
@badp Well done
@Fluttershy Coward.
Okay, so let's recap
I've got the drivers, I've got the backup, the backup is on my HDD
13:59
Dark Souls really isn't that hard. It just doesn't hold your hand.
@Wipqozn How am I a coward? O_o I play the game. I just know it's hard.
Now I can unlock the bootloader I suppose, I'm not going to scrape more data off this thing I presume
@badp What are you doing?
