@kalina Mark's upvotes weren't removed (at least on some sites), so you can't actually deduce that in this case.
18:15
What on earth happened in here last night?
Like five or six hours ago chat got weird.
Oak
Oak
@Ullallulloo as opposed to? I thought "weird" is the norm here
We should play Sleep is Death again.
@Oak Then maybe it got normal compared to the rest of the internet?
I don't know, but I don't think I like it.
@GnomeSlice It's so hard though...

Oh goddess, what did I miss?
I should upload that other game though sometime. It's been sitting on my desktop for months.

What is this mess?
I OBJECT
@OrigamiRobot End of the world, start of a new one, user vanished, lots of emoticons dumped to the android hell, and @kalina being given power she didn't ask for
Oh, and @badp and @fbueckert sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

Q: How do I upgrade an electrical engine?

fredleyThe forestry wiki implies I can upgrade my electrical engine, but doesn't say how. What do I do with the electron tubes to upgrade the engine?

@SaintWacko I bet @kalina was jealous
omg does somebody want my attention or am I being talked about with pings?!
And lots of exclamation points
@kalina You're being talked about with pings
18:28
dammit internets!
@kalina trollface.jpg
@kalina Typing @k[Tab] is easier than typing out kalina
I type your name out lots of times, and it's longer
@kalina Perhaps @OrigamiRobot is just a clearer thinker
You are obviously not as lazy as me.
18:29
@OrigamiRobot That too
@OrigamiRobot obviously
Hooray for laziness!
Hell, I'm too lazy to type out @badp
I blame @badp
@OrigamiRobot @b tab is still faster
18:30
for a lot of things
saves one keystroke
Everything is @badp 's fault
if I say @badp's, does it ping @badp?
But stupid @BenBrocka makes it so I have to hit Tab twice
2013 is about blaming @badp, not @wipqozn
@kalina Ugh I'm not even going to talk about him because he has been gone long enough for @W[Tab] to not work.
@OrigamiRobot lol
where did he go?
18:33
@OrigamiRobot Haha
@kalina He popped in the other day
that's not an answer!
downvote
@Ullallulloo I nearly flagged that...
Then I saw it was DF, and I was only tempted to flag it
I use genetic engineering to control my cat population

"Girls are incapable of being in the moment and just enjoying a game without complaining about every god damned aspect of it that is challenging."
You guys are too distracting. I have to leave like @W
"Girls just want the game to play itself, while they watch and talk to their girlfriends about how bored they are and then complaining that gaming sucks."
There is a reason I hate men
I hate men too
18:35
@kalina Lol where did you read those?
I hold @OrigamiRobot responsible for all of those reasons
@kalina But he's a robot...
Back from lunch.

I hate men too
@SaintWacko I warn you, that article is poison for the mind
@OrigamiRobot self loathing!
18:35
@kalina If it's poison, why are you reading it?
@fbueckert I finished reading it
@kalina That article is fucking moronic
HEY GUYZ THE REASONS GIRLS CANT PLAY GAMES IS THEY ARE TOO INTERESTED IN SHOPPING LOLZ
What a misogynistic idiot
@kalina Are you sure that's not satire? I find it hard to believe anyone could actually believe that
18:40
@murgatroid99 I am not sure of anything, my brain is still repairing itself after reading it
@kalina initiating auto-repair function
The reason more girl don't play video games, or at least don't advertise it, is because guys are jerks.
@SaintWacko Just reading the section headers was enough to make me go, "Wait, what?"
@OrigamiRobot Seriously. I'll bet there are a lot more girls playing video games than people think, but there's no way in hell they'll admit it while playing
@kalina Too much of it seems to be "girls don't conform to extreme gamer stereotypes, so they're not gamers". That can't be serious
18:42
@fbueckert Yeah, I started reading the first section, got disgusted, skipped along the headers, then closed the tab in further disgust
@SaintWacko I'm pretty sure they have a good idea of the demographics
> 42% of gamers are women
@SaintWacko I wouldn't admit it in public
Guys almost invariably fall into two categories when they find out they're playing with a girl:
1) Bend over backwards to please her
2) Turn into chauvinistic pigs who should've been strangled at birth.
Rarely, do they treat them like fellow gamers.
@fbueckert The first one is amusing (at least to witness), the second one makes me mute the player, and report them when able
@fbueckert this
@fbueckert Some people are idiots
@SaintWacko Most*
@OrigamiRobot True
@OrigamiRobot Very, very true.
Why is there never anything in the review queue any more?
I never remember to use it either, I just scroll down the homepage and check out all of the posts from new users.
18:58
@fbueckert I don't fall into either of those categories! =D Yayy!
user15026
@Fluttershy Completely off topic, but you mentioned not knowing what to read next, earlier, and I highly recommend Kushiel's Dart, because OMFG that book is very much good.
@Fluttershy I don't think anyone here really does
@SaintWacko Anyone in chat, you mean. I'm sure lots of the people who post on the site do =P
@GnomeSlice That's what I meant
@Fluttershy I believe the vast majority of people here in the Bridge don't fall into either of those categories.
19:06
@OrigamiRobot I'm sorry @OragamiRob
@BenBrocka We should rename him to @Paper Bob
@PaperRobert
@AshleyNunn Gotten your new e-reader yet?
user15026
@fbueckert Nope. :(
@AshleyNunn Yuck. That's taking a while.
If you dig out your PS2 (and message me your address), I can add another game to your ever growing list of things to read/watch/play.
user15026
19:10
@fbueckert I am picking up the ps2 tomorrow when I also pick up my cat :D
user15026
Do you want me to just leave you a Steam message?
@AshleyNunn That was the intention, yes. :P
@AshleyNunn I hope you get your new e-reader soon; you're going to love Mistborn.
user15026
@fbueckert That is one of the books I plan to read next, actually.
@AshleyNunn With Wheel of Time finally done, I plan on re-reading the ones Sanderson wrote, and then the last book.
user15026
@fbueckert Did he not write all of them?
19:15
And then, I have to buy the rest of the series. Again. So I can have a full set of matching spines.
@AshleyNunn It's originally by Robert Jordan.
But he died before he could finish it.
And Sanderson took over.
user15026
@fbueckert knows nothing
@OrigamiRobot Sorry :(
@AshleyNunn How's the new apartment?
user15026
@fbueckert Also you are not on Steam, so please remind me tonight to give you my address.
@AshleyNunn I'm leaning toward Kushiel's Dart myself.
Wow, cable companies are stupidly evil. Mediacom's residential plans are technically only for a single computer (so technically a familiy either needs multiple plans) Good thing no one reads/follows their TOS.
19:17
@AshleyNunn This series was started in I was in elementary school.
user15026
@Wipqozn Pretty amazing. Needs a cat, but that will be fixed on Tuesday when I am unpacked enough to bring Norbert over from my old place (the roommate is taking good care of him in the mean time)
First publication was in 1990, apparently.
user15026
@fbueckert O.o
user15026
@Fluttershy Do it, you will not regret it.
@AshleyNunn Buh? I'm not? Stupid computer; why must I bash you?
user15026
19:18
@fbueckert Nope, you aren't.
@BenBrocka Good luck attempting to enforce that.
@AshleyNunn I look forward to reading it. =P I doubt it's as good as what I'm currently reading. (40 pages til finished!)
user15026
@Fluttershy AUGH, don't tease me, you make that book sound so good, and I can't read it until my ereader arrives.
@fbueckert Yeah, I don't actually care about that. I do care that they're charging me $65 for a $15 internet plan though
@BenBrocka Yeah, that's where it's stupid.
19:20
@AshleyNunn =P I just have a physical copy.
I pay more than that for my internet, but them's the breaks for fast internet here.
user15026
I hope they aren't sending it through USPS/Canada Post - I have my address forwarding, but I have no idea how getting packages here works (I live in someone's basement of their house, and am still a little unsure about mail)
@AshleyNunn When I first started reading that I was afraid that it was going to end with "when I unpack my cat."
user15026
@Wipqozn Hahaha, oh lord, no, I am not that terrible. He is safe at the roommates's getting lots of cuddles and such, and I will go and get him Tuesday :D
Also, yeah, sarge_smith deleted his account.
19:21
@fbueckert Here?
@GnomeSlice Yup
I know he was asking about deleting it on another site.
I wonder if he meant to delete it here.
user15026
@fbueckert Ah, that explains the rep loss
@fbueckert It's straight up not supposed to be this expensive
@BenBrocka Are they actually attempting to charge you $15 per computer for the plan?
19:25
@fbueckert I don't know who that is.
I seen him asking, but still had no idea. Wasn't he just a <200 rep user?
@Wipqozn He spent a decent amount of time here in the last couple weeks.
@fbueckert Ah, I haven't. That's why I didn't really know him well.
@fbueckert No, it's a mystery meat $50 charge. IT doesn't map to anything else.
Arg their site is terrible. You click submit on their contact form and there's no confirmation that it was sent, it just boots you to the empty form again. I hope that got sent
@BenBrocka Wow. I love unspecified charges like that.
hey
it's exactly 30 days until I'm no longer a teenager
19:27
Companies that just randomly pad the bill are companies I'd rather not ever deal with.
@fbueckert "Mediacom online" is all it says. There's nothing on their site that explains it
It shows a severe lack of corporate ethics.
@fbueckert Same, but they're a monopoly, no other cable internet here, and the DSL is terrible. No Fiber.
@BenBrocka Sadly, that's how it is across most of North America.
@BenBrocka I know this story
19:29
And with no competition (and them screaming to governments when there is), it won't get any better any time soon.
@fbueckert Sad but true.
@fbueckert Yeah. I guess it's better than DSL at best. It'd be nice if telephone companies could embrace being a dumb pipe and let me get a 4G router at a reasonable price per month, but that's not happening any time soon either
And heaven forbid a community try to start their own fiber service... Comcast has convinced most states that would be illegal.
@Powerlord Seriously?
@Powerlord Most ISPs nowadays have no real interest in competition; they just want to continue charging gouging their customer.
Boo. How strikeout work in markdown?
19:31
@fbueckert ---
- - - this will be struck out - - -
cake
Remove the spaces.
It's not standard. <del> on posts, --- three slashes in chat ----
Whew. Just got in under the wire on that edit.
19:32
I don't mind comic sans
@Powerlord Exactly. I think most ISPs would die slow, painful deaths if they actually competed in the marketplace, rather than went screaming to the government.
But then, that's true of most big companies in North America that have been around since prior to the Internet.
@BenBrocka Ahahahahahahahahaha
The only reason I stick with my ISP is that while there is a bandwidth limit, they never check.
@BenBrocka Yes, because then the "government" would be competing against the corporations, and that's just not fair!!!!
@Powerlord Remember the big stink Time Warner threw up about Google Fiber?
19:36
@fbueckert The government really shouldn't be able to help them out like that. Laws RE telecommunications are a cluster%^&$ designed just to screw over any new competiton
@fbueckert It's a shame that Google is paying for that one.
@BenBrocka That's what you get when you have large companies throwing lots of money at decision makers.
@Powerlord The fact that it took a multi-billion dollar technology company to overcome the hardened resistance inherent in the telecom companies is what saddens me.
Why bother actually competing when you can just spend less money ensuring you don't have to!?
@fbueckert A multi-billion dollar technology company versus two multi-billion dollar pseudo-technology companies. :P
I'm surprised Comcast hasn't eaten Time-Warner cable yet.
@Powerlord The point is that the barrier to entry is so freaking high, that small companies are doomed to fail before they even start.
19:40
Bell Canada almost managed to ram through nationwide bandwidth caps here in Canada.
Hmm, Java apparently had an emergency patch yesterday
It would have effectively killed off all small ISPs.
@Powerlord I just installed a bunch of keyloggers and malware on my machine and skipped downloading Java. Saved time.
5
@fbueckert bandwidth caps are the spawn of the devil
@BenBrocka Especially seeing as how the underlying reason is, "Give us more money for doing nothing!"
19:42
My bandwidth is capped, but not by federal law...
@GnomeSlice Well, yeah. There IS no federal law.
@AshleyNunn good, I can ping you. YOU ALL AVOID BLANKET BANS TODAY.
@fbueckert Well, whatever, you said nationwide.
@GnomeSlice Because the public backlash from that proposal was so great that Harper told the CRTC to fix it, or he would.
19:43
@GnomeSlice Also, notice the word, "Almost"
@fbueckert Oh. I don't pay attention to the news much.
@fbueckert I wasn't talking about Bell at all, so I ignored that half.
@GnomeSlice Good idea, ignoring half a conversation.
@fbueckert Yeah. They've gotten consumers used to the idea that copper wires are precious sacred things and you can only have so much of the pipe at a time. And then they legislate the hell out of everything so pretty much anyone hoping to offer competition can't
@fbueckert Half a sentence. And I ignored it in my response. I was just commenting on the bandwidth cap, not Bell, or any politics.

Q: My WoW install freezes at "Checking for Updates"

Kasper Kristenseni am trying to install WoW MOP. I have downloaded the setup. I have got Wine 1.4.1 I have got PlayOnLinux But when I initiate the installation through Wine, it freezes at "Checking for updates". When i try to install Through POL it freezes at the next stage something like Blizzard update Agent ...

19:45
@BenBrocka That legislation is the only reason the companies still exist.
Not that I'm defending them; not at all.
@fbueckert Not quite; someone would have to offer internet service, and they'd still be able to make money. If they had to compete it'd just be a lot less profit
@BenBrocka Without that legislation, chances are extremely good that giant, bloated bureaucracies wouldn't have been able to keep up with smaller, more nimble startups.
And in the Internet age, speed is everything at the beginning.
@fbueckert Deployment is still a problem though, big companies could still live on the inertia alone. But they'd have to compete where the startups popped up, and eventually offer lower rates overall
@BenBrocka And that competition is where they'd lose, and lose hard.
@Shog9 Sadly, I have to have it installed on my work machine.
19:49
But they could probably live for years off current infrastructure at a lowered rate, I'm sure the idiots wouldn't starve (without killing themselves)
However, my home machine has no 32-bit JVM installed, only a 64-bit one for dev work.
Without that legislation, the internet landscape in North America would look very differently.
Although I've taken the precaution of disabling it for web browsers, just in case Chrome actually does start supporting 64-bit.
And net neutrality wouldn't be something that has to be regulated; it would be de-facto truth.
The only reason most ISPs scream at competition is due to the fat profit margins on the service.
@fbueckert That's the ideal future for me. I don't really think legislation is the right way to go for net neutrality (though short term it might be the lesser of two evils). Instead the anti-competitive existing legislation needs to be torn down
19:53
@BenBrocka Tearing down the legislation won't work in the short-term, though; the telecom companies have too much money, and know where to throw it, to ensure their interests are looked after.
Now, if all government officials could not accept ANY campaign contributions at all, THEN, we might have ourselves a proper shakeup.
I wish we could tag non-meta questions with
Zero campaign contributions I could go for (public or private). Or maybe cap them in the $100s
But good luck ever trying to ram THAT through.
@Powerlord I actually thought I'd installed it with the Android SDK, but apparently that was a different machine
@fbueckert That would go far better for everbody
@BenBrocka Also cap campaign spending
19:55
@BenBrocka Allowing any means they'll just work through back channels to ensure they stay within the letter of the law, while twisting it's purpose into a screaming pretzel.
This spending billions on campaigns is ridiculous
@Shog9 Well, we actually use applets at work, specifically WebEx and a custom-designed one that our web app interfaces with.
ugh. WebEx.
"All you thousand employees, here is <max contribution - $1>. Here's how to contribute it to Senator Y."
@SaintWacko Yeah, campaigns shouldn't be such a huge big money circus
19:57
"Oh, and before you try to keep the money, I'm good friends with the senator. He's keeping track of who contributes, and he has a list of all our employees."
@BenBrocka Politics in general has gotten to be a bit of a joke
