@GraceNote RPGs primarily. Music games are good. Platformers and action games in general. Shooters can be fun but I'm starting to get less enjoyment out of those recently.
@StrixVaria How about shmups?
@GraceNote They're pretty good too. I don't like the really crazy bullet hell ones, though.
I really, really love strategy games with no time constraints.
Final Fantasy Tactics and the like.
@StrixVaria Ah, me too
It's great to be able to stop for a second, or get distracted, and not worry about the world going on without you
15:03
If there were a turn-based version of StarCraft, I would play it all the time.
The real-time-iness of it makes it too stressful for me, though.
@StrixVaria Do you play Civ?
@SaintWacko Not often, because then I forget to sleep.
It's dangerous to boot that up.
@StrixVaria Heh, good point
I use a mod that about quadruples the tech tree, so games last longer, and I get even less sleep :P
Also adds a ton more units and civs
@StrixVaria Heh, if I recall, you enjoy Roguelikes a lot, too, no?
@GraceNote They're pretty much turn based strategy
15:05
@GraceNote Roguelikes are very good, yes. They are also very unforgiving, though, and make me rage.
@StrixVaria I've gotten to where I prefer games that way
@SaintWacko They are. Their turn-based, planning nature is pretty much the very core of them.
I used to savescum in games, but after playing DCSS for a long time, I prefer to play with a single save
@StrixVaria you need the right mindset of assuming you will lose every game, and then just be very happy when you win
@murgatroid99 Yeah, but there's a balance.
If I go in assuming I will lose, then I'm careless because "meh I'll lose anyway".
So you have to approach it seriously, but still expect to lose.
15:07
@StrixVaria This is the core of it. Tricky, but yeah.
@StrixVaria then make your goal to last as long as possible
@murgatroid99 Yep, that sounds about right
You are going to lose but you still aim to win.
I need to play some more DCSS.
@StrixVaria You should. It is an excellent game
15:08
I savescummed a bit when I started ADOM. Then I played Nethack without it and have been off of it since.
I keep it on a flash drive so I can just plug it in and play on any computer
@SaintWacko I keep it on dropbox for about the same reason
@GraceNote I did the same, but with Dungeons of Dredmor instead of ADOM, and DCSS instead of Nethack
0
Q: Where is the prestige option on Jetpack Joyride?

AaronI hear people saying you can prestige but I can't find that option on my iPod. Help?

I used to have Nethack on my palm, but I never really got into it because I kept starving to death
I don't think I figured out how to butcher
15:10
@SaintWacko I just use the netplay client that... I think you gave me it, actually.
999 is a great game that is somewhat about savescumming.
@GraceNote Most likely
@SaintWacko just eat corpses
Well, not really... Virtue's Last Reward is all about save-scumming, though.
@murgatroid99 I think those always made me sick
15:10
@SaintWacko There's no butchering in Nethack, you just eat the corpse. Once you note that it is safe enough.
@SaintWacko as soon as you kill them
In a sense anyway, since it's not really save-scumming since the game has an interface in VLR to switch to previous scenes to change the outcome.
I like using webtiles, but the latency makes it a lot less fun
So I usually use a local tiles install
@Powerlord That sounds cool
@GraceNote Ah, well, I figured out how to play DCSS Webtiles on my tablet, so I don't have to worry about Nethack anymore
@SaintWacko In fact, you have to go back to change things, as there are certain parts of the game it's impossible to pass without knowledge from another branch of the story.
@Powerlord Is it really about save-scumming or is it about just trial-and-error-by-save-point?
15:13
@GraceNote Well, it's not really save-scumming because a wrong choice kicks you out to the scene selection screen.
I forget what that screen is called, though.
Is weather.com displaying horribly broken for anyone else?
Every time I refresh it the stylesheet is mangled in a new and interesting way
it worked fine 3 hours ago
@LessPop_MoreFizz It's not working properly for me.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Isn't even loading for me
@Powerlord okay, so it's just broken. good.
@Powerlord Yeah, that sounds more like "trial-and-error" than "preserving to-be-deleted save files". The principle might be similar in execution but the methodology and logic behind it is different.
15:15
Wait, now it loaded
Looks fine, I think
I'm not terribly familiar with what it's supposed to look like
Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with it other than the long loading time
@LessPop_MoreFizz Whoa. No, mine doesn't look like that at all
What browser are you using?
@SaintWacko That's Safari, but Chrome is yielding similar results.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Works on my machine. ♪
@LessPop_MoreFizz They're taking design tips from Yvette's Bridal Formal
15:18
@SaintWacko THere are other variants as well, such as only the sidebar loading
@LessPop_MoreFizz Hm, I'm using Chrome

Q: member variables of a class has been changed, in each loop

kianooshI 've declared some classes in my cocos2dx program, and I 've set some values for their member variables, but after each time the program loops ( the main loop of the CCDirector ), all of their values have been removed! I want it class to save its next scene that should be replaced or pushed when...

@LessPop_MoreFizz looks fine to me in chrome (on linux)
Yeah, the front page seems to have fixed itself for me.
Now to get it to load my local weather.
mmmh
why can't it be hometime yet
15:31
@pixel I wish I could answer that.
But it'd just sound like me complaining since I'm here for 6.5 more hours.
I hope I'm not here for another 6.5 hours
I don't think I can remain the silent one for that much longer
It is snowing, so I don't have to go outside to work today. Yay!
Unfortunately, that also means I have to do the most mind numbing and painful part of my job imaginable.
Anyone here use Tasker?
This continues to be a problem
@fredley Heh
15:34
@SaintWacko Actually had enough fuel to get back to Kerbin in that ship too
Oh well
@fredley Sounds like you still have too much lateral motion when touching down
Well this is weird
0
Q: Where does a new Team Fortress 2 player start?

Jeffrey LinSome of my friends have told me that TF2, or Team Fortress 2, is a fun game. I figured that I would get it in Steam since it was free. However, I have no idea where to start and would like some help. For example, where do I start, what is the point of the game, etc.

@SaintWacko I do. Fixing lateral is hard
@LessPop_MoreFizz Which is?
MY phone's proximity sensor works at point blank range with light colored objects, but not with dark colored objects -.-
That doesn't make any sense
15:43
@SaintWacko What altitude do you descend from? Do you descend from Ap or Pe?
@GraceNote Making phone calls to various unverified points of interest to try to get the database up to date. Mind numbing expense reporting. Administrivia. Etc.
@fredley I haven't made it to the Mun yet
Ooh, I see.
I've just been messing around in orbit
@Lazers Collect hats
4
15:44
@SaintWacko Ah ok. That was my 3rd landing with Kerbal intact
@Powerlord Shoot mans. Collect Hats. The TF2 Experience.
Well this is annoying. The dark cover of my phone doesn't properly trigger the proximity sensor
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm still disappointed the game doesn't have bacon.
@BenBrocka So, I should shoot at the Demoman?
2
15:52
:(...
I was this close to adding "no I don't mean the poor Demoman"
You could change that to "uniform color"
I do specify "clothes"
Oh
Did I mention I can't view Arqade from here?
I'd go with Powerlord's suggestion over your parenthetical, @BenBrocka.
15:54
@Powerlord gasp I'm so sorry
So, I can't tell if you addressed that Spies can disguise as players on either team.
@Powerlord the horror
@BenBrocka You should add this
That way, you avoid any confusion and also avoid implicating yourself as having gone down that thought train.
@Powerlord NOSTALGIA
15:55
@Powerlord @BenBrocka Ah, that's true. You should change it to telling new players to play as Pyro and shoot at everyone
The parenthetical forces people to go down that thought train, because it makes them read more into what is ultimately a harmless statement than is necessary. If you just skip that and just make it even more harmless, then no one has to go down that road.
No, new players should pick up Medic first. Especially since Medic means you follow other players around a lot.
However, it also makes you more likely to be shot at...
@Powerlord yeah, as a newbie medic was really fun because I scored high without really having to be amazing
I forget if TF2 ever added a Medic training segment or not.
@Powerlord I didn't, actually. "shoot at everyone forever" is really more of the Pyro mindset
15:56
@Mana I apologise for yesterday's comment, but it was Raven who said it.
@RonanForman I'll kill you.
@BenBrocka Once, as a pyro, I was using my flare gun to shoot at enemies up on a bridge, and all of a sudden the air in front of me ignited
@Mana You'll have to catch me first, I'm heading to the Mun.
my girlfriend is a beautiful duck and I love her no matter what she looks like.
I liked playing medic at the start but I'm not sure it's a great class for people used to Deathmatch type games. You have to know who to follow, you have to know you get assist points, know who to uber...and the weapons are hard to use at best
15:57
One thing I've noticed is that TF2 has two learning curves: 1. Learning how to play the classes. 2. Learning how to not die (which includes things like Spy detection)
A cloaked enemy spy had run in front of me just as I fired, and I ignited and killed them :D
@BenBrocka The Medic's Syringe Gun is ludicrously powerful, though. The stock one anyway.
@Powerlord And using backblast as the pyro
I had been using the crossbow for so long that when I switched back to the needle gun and just starting decimating Spies, it actually surprised me.
@Powerlord playing against you sucked. I felt so stupid every time you killed me.
15:58
I love nothing more than killing a demoman/soldier with their own shots
@Powerlord Gotta lead targets and adjust for drop off at any modest distance though
@Mana Well, remember that I've clocked 2800 hours of actual play time in this game, over 900 just as Spy.
@Powerlord No, it's Soldier, Demo, Spy, and Engineer.
I think it's 2800... I think it was 3600 total time (I spent an entire month idling whenever I wasn't playing back when drops weren't limited)
@Powerlord it has training segments now?
16:00
@BenBrocka Yup.
F2P players have to complete the training segments before they can play.
TBH I've probably played less than 2 hours since new guns were added
I haven't played TF2 in a long time
Completing the training segments actually gives you an achievement, too.
@BenBrocka For over a year. They were there when I started.
I thought they'd eventually add the other 5 training segments, but I guess not. I don't think it'd be that difficult.
I wonder if it's possible to create training segments and submit them to the Steam Workshop
They all use the same map (tr_something, I forget the name)
Well, the Soldier one also has tr_dustbowl as part of it... the others are just basic mechanics.
16:02
What would be the pyro training? "This is a person. Set it on fire. If it does not die it is part of your team and you need to find another one to set on fire"
2
@BenBrocka I would hope they talk about airblast.
@BenBrocka Speech lessons, maybe.
and Spy-checking.
They don't need to be complicated, just introduce the basics of the class and weapons.
@Powerlord Spy checking maybe, but stock gun doesn't have airblasts unless they added that in
@BenBrocka What? Yes it does
16:03
@BenBrocka Yes it does.
The only one that didn't was the Backburner, for a while
@BenBrocka Phlog's the only one without it.
Huh, they must have added that, I definitely don't recall it having it when I played
@BenBrocka Flamethrower got airblast in The Pyro Update in 2008.
@Ullallulloo ...And apparently a new one called Phlog
16:04
I thought it was the alternate flamethrower that had it
@BenBrocka So many people used Backburner that the default was practically the alternate :P
@BenBrocka They added it to the basic flamethrower to compensate for the Backburner's other bonus.
@BenBrocka Nope, as mentioned before, the Backburner (the second one introduced) started without it.
I used the default because I love airblast
It also started with +50 health, but that got nerfed quickly.
16:05
@Powerlord Does the Backburner have the airblast now?
@StrixVaria I think so
@StrixVaria Yes, but it costs 50 ammo instead of 20.
I never liked the Backburner.
The various flamethrowers have all had various nerfs over the years. The Degreaser has a -10% damage penalty now, for instance.
I might use it now that it has airblast again
If I ever start playing again
16:07
@SaintWacko I played recently during the Pyrovision update.
What's really fun is killing enemy snipers with a hadouken :D
@SaintWacko The best part is... every Pyro secondary has a taunt kill, although the Scorch Shot's doesn't always seem to work.
It's the only class + weapon slot in the entire game where every weapon for it has a taunt kill.
@Powerlord Last time I played, the only secondary weapons were shotgun and flare gun :P
(Spy's knife used to have that distinction too, but the Spy-cicle doesn't have a taunt kill)
@SaintWacko Now, you have the Shotgun, Flare Gun, Detonator (flare), Reserve Shooter (shotgun), Manmelter (flare)., and Scorch Shot (flare).
@Powerlord Wow
16:10
Flare Gun crits on-fire enemies, Detonator mini-crits on-fire enemies (but you can right click to make it explore in a radius), Manmelter can extinguish nearby players with its alt-fire and store crits for each player it extinguishes, and the Scorch Shot has knockback.
Oh right, Reserve Shooter crits in-air players but only for 3 seconds after you switch to it... and only has a 3-ammo clip. And speeds up weapon switch speeds.
Hmm, some of those sound like fun
Reserve Shooter was originally Soldier only, where it took skill to use...
Don't really need the Manmelter alt-fire though: Just use airblast
Well, mostly... since it crits any airborne player, it's always been one of those "why hasn't this been nerfed yet" things.
@SaintWacko It was released as part of a set with the Phlogistinator. Also, Manmelter doesn't have ammo.
The downside to the no-ammo bit is that it takes longer to reload than the other flare guns.
16:12
@Powerlord The Phlogistinator?
That sucks, I loved Shock kills for the head-asplosions
@BenBrocka I have wondered why I didn't see people getting gibbed from overkills
@SaintWacko The Phlog mentioned earlier. The one with no airblast, but if you do 300ish fire damage, you can right-click to taunt and gain crits for 8 or so seconds.
@Powerlord Hm
Oh, and that's fire damage done from any source, including flare guns.
16:14
@SaintWacko Oh, that still happens actually (they turn into a small amount of bloody chunks though, not limbs/torsos), but overkill is set to a very high damage %
This was more of headshots, and explosive guns would break off limbs if they hit a limb for the killing blow
However, you don't realize how useful airblast is until you try playing Pyro without it.
Plus with Shock a target's head would fry into a skull and their brain/eye would pop out in a comical fashion
It was like the only reason to use Shock weapons
@BenBrocka Yeah, that was fun
@StrixVaria Woohoo! Now you can play Skydrift and Megabyte Punch!
@GnomeSlice Have recent updates changed much in Megabyte Punch?
Haven't played it in a bit
16:18
@SaintWacko Last one I played added the ice level.
And changed a bunch of stuff
Older levels were all redesigned, and you have to find colour schemes in the levels now to unlock them in the overworld.
@GnomeSlice Oh yeah Megabyte Punch is another game that I wanted to play.
I need to make a list.
I tried Skydrift out with the controller and it was way easier.
I still made some awkward mistakes, though.
@StrixVaria Just Cause 2, Skydrift, MP, Super Meat Boy
I just have to get used to it.
@GnomeSlice And Darksiders.
Mostly I've been playing SMB though.
Since I got it.
@StrixVaria Up for a race?
@GnomeSlice I'm at work now and I'm going out to dinner tonight, so I probably can't play today.
16:21
Sure thing.
Got a new controller or something?
@BenBrocka Yeah I finally got a wired 360 controller for my PC for Christmas.
SMB is EVIL!
There are a bunch of games I've owned for a while and couldn't fully enjoy because the keyboard controls were dumb.
Ah, definitely nice for some games. I use a PS3 controller. Works great but the driver is unoffical
16:22
@StrixVaria Pssh, I opted to get the wireless one with Windows receiver.
@Powerlord I hate wireless input methods.
So, if I need to, I can pair my other 360 controllers with it.
Also, I already have the charger for 360 wireless controllers.
Wireless controllers are actually the only wireless input method I haven't had connection issues with (aside from the battery dying)
Hmm, list.valvesoftware.com isn't responding for me
@Powerlord Hahaha, it's not that bad. N+ is still much more frustrating. Mostly because the levels are more contrived.
16:24
@GnomeSlice Oh yeah, JC2, definitely
@GnomeSlice You're... aware I've played Super Meat Boy, right?
It's awesome with a controller, because of the autoaim
I'm not saying this about a game I haven't played, but one I've played and hated.
I loves me my wireless mice.
@GnomeSlice Is there a bandage in every level in SMB?
16:25
And controllers.
@Powerlord $20 says you haven't played N+. Also how could you hate it?
And basically everything wireless that isn't keyboards.
Wireless keyboards are the devil.
@StrixVaria Nope. And some of them have more than one.
@GnomeSlice Ah ok. I saw there were 20 levels and 20 bandages, so I was looking around one for a while but was fairly sure it didn't have one.
@GnomeSlice Aside from the warp zones?
16:26
@GnomeSlice You're right, I haven't played N+. As for how can I hate it, I played it and didn't like it due to its insane difficulty.
In other words, I hate SMB for the same reason I hate Binding of Isaac. Oh, and having played two of McMillan's games, I also know not to bother buying anything else he makes.
@Powerlord I am of the same opinion
I've played them both, and enjoyed neither
@RonanForman Dunno, actually.
@Powerlord Oh come on, it's not that bad.
I beat all of the light levels (well, from worlds 2-5) in about an hour
I like the aesthetic of SMB a lot, but I didn't get very far the last time I played it due to the difficulty.
@GnomeSlice The only original thing about them is the shock value
2
@StrixVaria Have you ever played 'N'?
16:33
@GnomeSlice No.
It's the game the original Meat Boy was based on. And it's free.
Also, time to play DCSS
Also it's a tiny download.
@StrixVaria The 20 bandages are total of both light and dark worlds.
I should finish all of the dark levels in SMB
16:35
Yay, found an altar of Okawaru on D2!
and I'm only XL4
Egh
@badp made me stop beating everything 100% so I could help him with the final light level.
Now I can't remember which of these dark ones had bandages.
@RonanForman Oh that's good to know.
I tried a few of the easiest dark levels and I'm going to hold off on that for a while.
They weren't that bad but I can see it's going to escalate quickly.
@StrixVaria It will.
I forgot Meat Boy doesn't like alt-tabbing
woo bandage get
There should be an achievement for getting all of the bandages without using any other characters.
