it's interesting, bit of a different paradigm for a monster taming game
tapes are used to turn yourself (and party members) into the monsters
and monster experience is more about expanding their moveslots and unlocking other moves
so you don't spend forever leveling up a newly-caught/recorded monster to make them viable for combat like pokemon

also, type effectiveness isn't just damage increases
different matchups can result in different effects
for example, using a fire-type move on a water-type beast buffs the water-type with the steam status, allowing it to regen health each turn
but using air-type moves on a fire-type extinguishes the fire-type, debuffing its offensive stats
while using fire-type moves on a plastic-type beast causes it to melt, turning it into a poison-type
