Q: Can we get the ability to boost bounties?

Taco タコスIn my opinion, this answer is a prime example of when bounty should be awarded. With that in mind, the OP of the question it answers has an open bounty of 100 reputation to reward the existing answer: I also find the answer exemplary and worthy of more than just 100 reputation points. However, I...

Hey everyone. Can anyone please tell if NVDIA 1080 better gpu than 1650? I had assumed for many months that since 1650 is newer it should be better. But just now I checked an online comparison and found that 1080 is much better. So I wanted to confirm. Is it really better for gaming?
16:18
yes, 1080 is a high end gpu, 1650 is a mid tier gpu. 1650 is newer, but at best it's comparable to 1070 in performance, not 1080
17:02
@Batophobia thank you for the additional clarifications! Sorry for the delay, been a busy weekend lol
17:52
@Vikas I want to add some extra clarification: the 1080 was the high-end card from 2 generations ago. The next generation was the 2000 series, which mainly added real-time raytracing and AI. However, those cards were rather expensive and the new features weren't widely supported, so Nvidia released the 1600 series which didn't have those features. The 1650 was the budget tier of that series.
@Elise Thanks
no problem :)
@Elise Unfortunately I can't buy it. I thought it would be cheap but no. It's way more expensive than 1650 :(
buying a gpu these days is for the rich only
yeah
17:56
I'm still running an r9 390, lol
I really need to play 2-3 games and I can't buy one pc. I've a poor 940MX gpu laptop and it sucks :(
It's like I need at this moment the most and I can't afford it.
someone I know just upgraded from 1070 to 3060 and she said she would send the old gpu to me if I pay shipping, so I might actually get an upgrade
but shipping is gonna be close to $100 cad, lmao
still, much cheaper than buying it
@Elise Good. But getting second hands one needs inspection. Some people here do fraud
eh, I trust her and she said if it doesn't work, she will pay back for the shipping
I'm not paying for the card itself, just the shipping
@Nzall but 2000 series still better than 1080 right?
17:58
@Vikas surprisingly - not really
@Vikas depends on the card, really
2080 is only a tiny bit faster than 1080, all they did with the 2000 series is add support for RTX
@Elise $100 is a lot I think
@Nzall RTX 2060 for example?
@Elise Oh
@Vikas well it's 55-70 usd, she will go to the post office sometime this week and find out which box she can fit the gpu in, so she can give me exact price
dly
dly
1080 > 2060
@dly 🤔
@Vikas a used 1070 on ebay is like $400+ cad
Easiest way to get a comparison is just google CARD1 vs CARD2, it'll usually have UserBenchmark as the first result and you'll be able to compare framerates that way
and I trust her more than I trust ebay, lol
dly
dly
@Nzall and memory
18:01
@dly Oh I think we can't compare the different series.
We need to compare them to see which one is better.
if you could get something like 3060 at msrp or close to it, that's an excellent value card
@Elise ebay charges too much shipping charge here. Not really recommended.
@Vikas yeah, that too
Actually any foreign thing will have more cost
@Vikas your 1070 is going to be a meaningful increase over the R9 390
18:03
@Nzall I think you replied to the wrong person :P
@Nzall yeah
but yeah, iirc the 1070 is something like 40% faster than 390
@Elise oh, you're right
or at least that's what I remember from back when 1070 was first released
grey avatars eh, blur together
I'm currently using a 1070, still going strong
18:04
I don't know much about amd gpu
yeah, 1070 is great value
r9 390 is comparable to gtx970, but better
I can afford 1050 or 1650 only, that too in laptop. But I feel I will regret it once i buy it
I hope it can hold out until next year. I bought it in 2016 and I'm hoping I can upgrade to a computer with a 4000 series card
1070 was a generational leap in performance over maxwells
@Vikas Note that you can't put a desktop GPU into a laptop
18:05
laptop gpus are slower
And laptop GPUs are not comparable to desktop GPUs in the slightest
@Nzall yeah. I meant buying a laptop 😅
you can't really upgrade a laptop gpu 🤔
oh
1650 is pretty decent for a laptop
@Elise I could buy a new laptop
if you want a desktop and can afford laptop prices, look at pre-builts
18:06
@Elise yeah, but newer call of duty game will suck I think.
pre-built desktops don't have the scalper issues
I have a laptop with an RTX 2060. Bought it last year because there was still a chance we'd go on Christmas vacation to Spain, so I wanted a new laptop before then
you can get pretty good pre-built desktops for like $2000 cad with ryzen 7 and rtx 3060
@Elise yeah looked. Desktop is 20% more expensive and I'll need to buy a screen too.
might even be able to find them for less
@Vikas idk what laptops you're looking at where a desktop at comparable performance is more expensive :P
18:07
For past 3-4 months I'm only browsing these stuff and gpu prices 🤣
@Vikas Do you currently got a laptop?
Because I think there are certain hacks you can do where you can use your laptop as a screen
@Nzall yes. It's good but gpu is bad. i7, 16gb ram and 940mx gpu
@Nzall oh for screen
I bought a desktop replacement 17" beast of a laptop 6 years ago for $1700. My wife's cheap desktop with i5 outperformed it in every cpu intensive task
@Nzall I think they are way to complex?
There's a question on superuser I think about the same. They were complex methods
Not necessarily. Windows has Miracast, but that appears to be secondary monitor only
18:09
@Nzall nothing short of disassembling the laptop and taking the panel out and hooking it up to a monitor controller (which you'd have to buy separate) would be able to provide you with reasonable main monitor experience
you can buy a cheap monitor for under $100
@Elise My budget is $700 🤣
1080p monitors are dirt cheap these days
@Vikas oof, that's like, the price of a decent gpu today
@Vikas What region?
India
if you have good second hand market, you might be able to get some good deals there
buying new tho, good luck with that budget 😔
any gpu worth buying is gonna be more than half your budget
18:11
Yeah, but for second hand you need to do a lot of effort and then you need trust issues
yeah, I don't like buying second hand, but we also don't have a local second hand market
tbh you might be better off getting something like a ryzen 5600G with integrated gpu
build a system with that
4 months ago I could buy a desktop with 1650 (low profile gpu though) card within my budget, but now it is 30% more costlier
and then add an external gpu once prices are down
the integrated gpu in a 5600G is still fairly decent
@Elise I've heard that integrated ones aren't good?
intel igpu's are trash
18:13
@Elise is there any site/reference where we can compare nvidia with integrated amd gpu?
amd igpu's are excellent budget choices
@Vikas I'm sure the same one Nzall linked earlier would have that info
I highly recommend logicalincrements.com for build ideas
I need to play mainly GTAV and 2-3 COD games. released before 2020
@Vikas What's your budget in rupees?
@Elise 5600G better than 940MX?
@Vikas lol definitely
940mx is trash tier
anything less than the 50 series is not worth buying
and 940mx is a cut down version for laptops
18:16
@Nzall Actually. It's a bit flexible. If I can get 1660 GPU, I can increase my budget a bit. But I'm looking a desktop around Rs. 60,000
I wouldn't be surprised if a modern intel igpu would outperform the 940mx tbh
@Vikas including monitor?
@Elise lol
@Nzall No lol
@Nzall I'll worry about monitor later
Damn it, it appears PC Part Picker doesn't support India yet
if you're looking for the best bang for your buck, I would suggest checking the local second hand market for full builds, people often sell their old PC's as a whole system and you can get some really good deals for cheap
18:17
@Elise I'll compare them and see
I've seen PC's better than mine sold for under $500
@Nzall it's fine. I'll check
@Elise a year ago?
@Elise No warranty though, you're always taking a gamble when buying second hand
@Vikas well, 2 years ago
but my PC was almost $2000 built new :P
@Elise Well. Things were much better 2 years ago.
18:19
@PrivatePansy yeah of course, it's always a gamble
@Vikas logicalincrements.com set this to India and it'll show you a couple of sub 60K Rs.
@Vikas yeah, but there's a ton of people who don't follow tech news or just need some money asap
Sometimes I just Google how much it rained in Taiwan so that drought is over and chip prices come down. LOL
and when buying a full system, you're more likely to get better, "wholesale" deals than when buying individual parts
if you want new - look at prebuilts, they weren't hit by the scalpers
@Nzall Oh now I remember this site. I checked it briefly few months ago. I'll go through again.
18:21
I remember a while ago at the peak of the bitcoin craze, best buy was selling prebuilts with rx580 in them for less than rx580 sold on ebay
some people were buying the prebuilts and then selling it for parts on ebay for profit
@Elise I'm getting an Acer desktop i5, 1060 in my budget. But I'm hoping for slight better deal.
@Elise I hate it.
try to get something that's not all fancy looking and proprietary
acer should be fine
Avoid Dell like it's gonna infect you with COVID
but I know some Dell prebuilts have proprietary motherboards and proprietary psu's that can barely run what they're built for
Like, Dell is full of proprietary parts and scummy business practices
18:23
gotta be careful with prebuilts, because the big brands use proprietary stuff and they skimp on psu's and motherboards
@Nzall I hate Dell. My current laptop costed me too much and gaming sucks. I realized it only a few months later that I did buy a bad product.
Asus is cheaper than Dell here
people like big numbers, so they will have a fancy cpu, fancy gpu, lots of ram, but the motherboard is trash and psu is running at 100% the whole time gasping for air
@Elise proprietary?
non-standardized
only works with their stuff
can't upgrade
@Vikas parts that you can't easily replace
18:25
@Elise the one I'm seeing has low profile GPUs. Are they bad? Actually most prebuilt I'm browsing has reviews that GPU is low profile.
like back in the day all phones had proprietary cables 😂
@Nzall oh ok
@Vikas eh, likely poorer cooling, but it shouldn't necessarily be bad
For example, Dell has motherboards that don't fit the standard motherboard fittings, or worse have something that sticks out of the case at the top that makes it harder to replace
@Elise ok. I had asked a question too few hours ago about the same on main site
18:26
And Dell also REALLY likes to trick you into getting extended warranty and other unnecessary surplus charges
with low profile gpu's you kinda have to check them out individually
If you got the time, I recommend you check out Linus Tech Tips Secret Shopper 2020
some low profile gpu's have inadequately tiny fans
@Nzall the problem is prebuilt desktops don't have detailed description like what GPU they have (full size or low profile) and what motherboard etc.
@Nzall I almost bought an extended warranty but then cancelled it. My laptop battery and keyboard sucks.
@Nzall ok
@Nzall LOL the intro is funny. James Bond
They have Sarah, one of their non-techie sales people buy 4 different computers over the phone and Dell was the absolute worst every single step of the way. The Dell sales rep tried to upsell Sarah on various things a dozen times, getting decline every time, and he STILL included those things. Then the PC arrived and the memory was single channel, which leaves a lot of performance on the table these days
18:31
How can we know memory is single channel?
@Vikas how many sticks are used. One stick is single channel, 2 or 4 sticks is dual channel, 3 sticks is a mix
You want 2 or 4 sticks, not 1 or 3
@Nzall my laptop has 2 ram sticks. 1 came with it, 8gb and i bought another 8gb. So it's called dual channel?
@Vikas yeah, that's dual channel
It effectively means that both sticks can be used at the same time
which massively increases your performance
@Nzall RAM itself isn't single/dual channel? I vaguely remember when I was shopping this RAM I was searching dual channel RAM. I maybe wrong though.
@Nzall So it depends on Motherboard? How many slots it has?
@Vikas No, RAM itself is not single or dual channel. However, if you are going dual channel and buying RAM for a new computer, you need to make sure you get matched sticks, so identical frequency, timing and size on both sticks
18:35
@Nzall yeah I'm aware of this ferquency thing
@Vikas yeah, indeed. Most motherboards have an even number of slots, so it should be fine
@Nzall Oh got it
@Nzall But if it has 3 slots and we put 2 ram sticks. That would also be fine?
@Vikas it would be fine, but I don't think there are any worthwhile motherboards with 3 slots
ok
thank you everyone
@Vikas One final thing you should be careful of: there are some RAM manufacturers right now who, in an attempt to meet demands for RAM, are making RAM sticks with subpar components that are significantly slower. Essentially, where good RAM sticks have 8 RAM modules, 4 on each side, the bad ones have only 4, on 1 side, with double capacity. However, this slows them down significantly
18:42
@Nzall I buy crucial rams
or any other well known brand
@Elise @Nzall one problem i feel if i build a pc with any amd integrated cpu is i can't upgrade it later with nvidia. I read that motherboards can cause compatibility problems. I could satisfy myself for now with low entry and later upgrade it after 1 year or 2, but it can have compatibility issues.
so i'll need to buy several parts again

1 hour later…
20:14
@Vikas what? sure you can, where did you hear this?
as long as the motheboard has a proper pci-e slot for the dedicated gpu, it will work
did you know almost all intel cpu's have an integrated gpu?

Q: How do I level up new heroes in Genshin Impact?

David YellI have pulled some new heroes from a recent banner, but the story quest I am trying to do has level 49 enemies. When using my 'best' team, they are not strong enough and just die all the time. I've tried lots of different team combinations, and have died every time. What effective techniques can ...
