@Yuuki it does get a little repetitive, mostly because at psychological level you tend to notice that you get the same puzzle far more than how you would notice battling the same enemy group in a regular jrpg.

I'm not sure why I feel losing HP in random battles was more acceptable in Paper Mario 1 & 2 then it is Origami King.

@Yuuki probably that ties to what I just mentioned. It doesn't completely fell like a battle.

In a regular jrpg you expect to battle enemy and try to minimize the expected damage

Here the tutorial presents the battle almost like a puzzle

The battle screen results only reinforce that

Giving out a "No-damage" bonus only make you feel like you should be able to not-be damaged in the first place

So, instead of living a battle where you feel gratified for getting little damage, now in your head you "must have done something wrong" in a puzzle

notice that the tutorials at the start of the game do indeed teach you that there is a correct sequence of action that will wipe the enemies before you get damaged - so it is not weird that that idea sticks even when that is not true.

Basically, I asked the question, then later googled “what is this exclamation point next to the level name”

Then found out the explanation point was the indicator for bonus rooms in all 3 games

Then verified the info for myself in all 3 games

I had no idea all 3 games used the same indicator

Honestly, when I asked the question, I assumed DKC1 didn’t have an indicator at all

I was actually looking for an answer to DKC2 when I came across the answer for DKC1
