not even FTP passwords should be logged, which is what happens here: we're retrieving a Karaf Feature from a Maven Repo through FTP in the form of ftp
://usr:[email protected]

Problem is that Karaf then delegates this to a SimpleDownloadTask, which throws an IOException in case something goes wrong

and this IOException has the full URL

this bubbles up through the Karaf MavenDownloadManager, which in turn bubbles up to our service, which logs the exception, and since this happens at 2 different innerExceptions in the ExceptionMessage, we cannot really edit the message to filter out the password

Not a huge deal as the access is not public anyway (you'd need to be in our private network to use it), but it was something as simple as a connection failing, and the connection string being logged out. Fixing is easy, preventing properly is hard.

i.e. you have a process that is signing up with canary tokens as a password, and your logging process rings alarms if that canary token shows up.

And you have this running daily on prod (and other environments), for passwords, api keys, etc. etc.

It's not as simple as you guys say: we have a separate handler registered to Karaf to deal with this almftp protocol, which in turn generates an object that handles generating the ftpconnection. However, it's this almftp protocol that ends up getting logged as the faulty url, which in turn gets passed up the chain. However, we need to pass the FTP password from the almftp url to our own configuration

So we have the almftp url with the password in plaintext, and then we parse that url when we create our connection and process our password

It's not really a database though. Essentially, our product is a centralized client/server solution that the client can extend. These extensions can be used both on the client and the server, but they are centrally stored on the server. The FTP configuration is to allow the client to retrieve extensions without having to define stuff like fileshares

Like, we also have a fileshare solution, but that gets a lot more complicated when you need to work cross-platform

and also requires extra configuration on the machine itself

so it's easy to spot any failures and where they occured

My Lilith build had an active skill cooldown reduction by killing an enemy, and I had built her to deal massive damage when I came out of phase, so I'd phase, pop out near an enemy, almost surely kill it, then immediately phase again.
