Q: What are Thano's abilities in the new Fortnite LTM?

ChildishforlifeThe new Fortnite LTM says that you are able to play as Thanos, and gain certain abilities. What abilities do you get for picking up the Infinity Gauntlet in the new Fortnite LTM?

broke: windows 10
woke: android 10
but for actually, good lord I forgot android came out in literally high school
this is simultaneously a reflection of me feeling old and also making everyone else feel old
2
you're welcome

everything came out while someone was in high school

This is true
However more specifically ten years ago happens to be me
well between ten and six

6:05 PM
@Unionhawk youre old

ten years ago I was also in high school

Ten years ago, I was ten years younger than I am now.

user15026
Ten years ago I was not in high school.

@Ash neither was i

6:10 PM
I have no idea what high school is in dutch school terms

@KevinvanderVelden An educational facility in Amsterdam.
cc @GodEmperorDune @Wipqozn @Ash

Pot is legal-ish in all of the netherlands

@KevinvanderVelden Probably something else than in Belgium, because your school system is weird.

user15026
@KevinvanderVelden whatever you do from like 14-18ish years old school wise

@John nothing new from the Bestiary league will stay in the basegame in PoE :( No more Einhar Frey.

6:14 PM
@KevinvanderVelden according to info i can find on wikipedia, it seems like HAVO would be the equivalent

Aah, middelbare school then-ish

or VWO

MBO appears to be closer to an equivalent of US trade schools

High school is more like having 5,000 rep.

Q: State of Decay cannot relocate homebase to trucking warehouse

CheeseNhamToastGuys this is driving me nuts! I have 50 material, 14 survivors and I can't move my home to Snyder Trucking Warehouse. When I try, Lily just keeps saying, "does it have a wall around it? Like a, defensible perimeter?" And my character keeps answering no. How do you sort this out?

@Yuuki so college is having 10k rep?

@KevinvanderVelden This is the only sane thing you said about schools.

It is cool that they're implementing my "app twitter->go home" tasker task

6:36 PM
What if someone's kink is kinkshaming?
🤔

You mean the humiliation kink? =p

LASER IS THE SAUCE
holy shit
I'd call a case of a waymo car successfully predicting and reacting to a red light runner to be an impressive display

@Unionhawk that's a thing they should be pretty good at compared to humans, because they don't have to divide their attention

Oh yeah there's absolutely no way a human would catch that until at least at the intersection

Is that from the Google IO right now?

6:50 PM
yeah
about, maybe 2 minutes ago
keynote just ended

There are too many goings-on today, this all needs to stop
Including work shakes fist

@TimStone and my coworker thinking that cracking and eating shelled peanuts at his desk is acceptable behavior

wat

it too needs to stop

Unlocked the forgotten \o/

6:58 PM
@TimStone I mean the keynote is over so
That's stopped

But I didn't process the new information yet
Lol Notepad now support Linux line feeds

lmao

fucking finally

See this is just a step too far I can't take all this excitement at once

about time

7:00 PM
CRLF needs to die painfully

Windows 10 in the latest release has an integrated ssh server and client. I'm curious how well that one will work

I didn't even catch the real-time video holy shit
Even running frame by frame

@MadScientist I think the client is derived from the one I use, and it works pretty well! I don't even use the Linux subsystem

I really hope Google is as far ahead in self-driving as it seems right now. If they're not well ahead of whatever Uber is doing, it'll be a very long time until we can get some real self-driving cars

I mean, 6 million miles > 0 miles lol

7:03 PM
@TimStone I tried the SFTP server part while this was still a beta, and it pretty much broke immediately.

at least I think Uber is still at a big fat 0?

they have driven on public roads quite a bit, but also killed one person

@MadScientist That seems less good :P

that was a year ago or so, and I suspect that they focused on the client and not on the server

Wait what, dutch netflix has yugioh? o.o

Q: Is there any punishment for leaving a game?

user598527One sensible reason to quit early is when the player is downed in the co-operative modes, after the teammates have announced that they won't be able to revive this player.

@Ash "Anyway, I've left you my numbersoyoucancallmebackbye!" clickACHOO!

@GnomeSlice I don't remember it ever crashing on me. Definitely not every 10 min

8:20 PM
@Unionhawk RIP Overwatch chat room.

I have an idea for a data structure, hear me out. A linked list where every node contains a hash of all the data in the nodes behind it, and every time you want to add a new node, you need about 200.000 other computers to say ok and consume the power equivalent of a small nation

@Unionhawk You can describe anything in a way that makes it sound stupid

user15026
@murgatroid99 Yes, but I have yet to have anyone explain this in a way that doesn't sound stupid which I think is the difference

user15026
Like I still am waiting for someone to explain how this is actually practically useful for anyone

user15026
(Yes, I know Bitcoin, but I still question the "usefulness" of a currency that literally uses that much resources)

user15026
(that and I have yet to see many practical uses of BTC)

8:47 PM
The tweet is about blockchain more generally than bitcoin. And I agree that bitcoin is not a great use of the blockchain technology

user15026
I know it's more about blockchain, but I am saying when I go "find me a practical logical use for this that accounts for the immense resource drain" people always go "BTC" and that's...not that great

Blockchain itself is a solution to the problem of distributed consensus: keeping information consistent across a large number of computers when different computers can receive different pieces of information in different orders.
Bitcoin has a lot of theoretical benefits that are outweighed by practical problems

user15026
Does blockchain inherently have the resource use problem or is that because of how BTC uses it?

My understanding is that bitcoin uses so many resources because the general public runs the miners

Yeah I feel like bitcoin might be the the most transaction-intensive use case for a blockchain.

9:00 PM
It's also takes way more work that strictly necessary to avoid one person doing all the work and forging the history

If a company wanted to use blockchain for some kind of distributed ledger, I think it would not use significantly more resources than their normal datacenter computing costs

If everyone was honest then you don't need as much work because your not worried about one person getting lucky and writing the whole history by themselves

Even with everyone being honest, you still want to protect against bugs or data corruption corrupting the ledger
But I think one issue with bitcoin is that you want a large fraction of miners to be in agreement, which means that you need a large number of miners to work on every single transaction, because there is a large number of miners in total.

9:14 PM
@Ash my understanding is pretty limited, but the major issue is that you have to create a consensus in some way for this kind of distributed ledger to work. Bitcoin and many others use "proof of work", so the majority of computing power determines who decides. There are other potential ways to create consensus, but I don't think they have been used on the same scale as Bitcoin

user15026
So is it just a scale problem?

@MadScientist Yeah if everyone was on the same team then you wouldn't need as rigorous proof of work for consensus

@Ash No, the alternative I know of is "proof of stake", which is essentially that whoever owns the majority of coins decides. But I don't think anyone has shown yet that this is a solution that works in practice.

user15026
Right but if you were doing proof of work, but on a lesser scale, would it be such a resource drain? Is it just the amount of miners that's causing BTC's resource drain?

user15026
(sorry, I just really want to understand this)

9:18 PM
A blockchain is a distributed database. The one thing that is new there is that it doesn't require trusting the individual nodes. If you can actually trust your nodes, you don't need a blockchain and much easier and faster methods work as well.

Also specifically with bitcoin they want a new block every fixed amount of time, so the more people in it the harder the work needs to get to slow it down

@Ash There is no lesser scale. In a proof of work blockchain, anyone that gets 51% of the computing power can decide what happens. So if all the regular users decide to only mine a bit, someone else could just take over the whole thing.
(I think all the cryptocurrency stuff is bullshit, and I can't see how it would end up truly useful aside from circumventing any regulation and monitoring on regular currencies. So take my comments with a huge grain of salt)

@MadScientist You can trust your nodes without completely trusting the output of all of them, so you may still want a blockchain because it provides decentralized Byzantine fault tolerance.

@murgatroid99 I don't think you need a blockchain for that, the usual distributed consensus algorithms should be enough for that case

@MadScientist I mean that you can use a blockchain as your distributed consensus algorithm/data structure

9:22 PM
@murgatroid99 As far as I understand, without something like proof of work, there is no blockchain. It's just the old established distributed database stuff

I think the main theoretical advantage of blockchain-based cryptocurrencies is that they have all of the correctness and consistency guarantees of other currency models, but there is no single point of failure

ok, so I'm falling behind on the biter waves. Too much damage control needed. I have a feeling I'm going to be overrun soon. But now first doing other stuff.

@murgatroid99 there is certainly a single point of failure, and that is a flaw in the protocol or the dominant implementation

@MadScientist My understanding is that the blockchain itself is just the linked list with the hash and timestamp. You need some data validation protocol for a distributed blockchain, but it doesn't necessarily need to be proof of work
@MadScientist That's not what "single point of failure means".

@murgatroid99 that's the Merkle tree, and that is much, much older than the blockchain

9:25 PM
@MadScientist According to wikipedia, it is a relatively minor improvement on Merkle trees

@murgatroid99 I know, but it's still the major practical danger for a cryptocurrency.

Something about storing multiple documents in one block
Or, I'm not sure I exactly understand the details, but it does look like a Merkle tree is one of the primary components of a blockchain, and the article seems to indicate that there are blockchains that don't use proof-of-work validation

user15026
Okay, this is above my head :(

user15026
(That's my biggest problem with this stuff, it's lauded as the NEXT BIG THING) but every time I try to get a handle on it it just gets so complicated)

Unicode. You can do so many stupid things with it.‮siht ekiL –‭ — Johannes Kuhn Sep 5 '13 at 8:41
O.o

9:43 PM
"stupid"
they're necessary in some cases

@Ash Yeah. My summary is that I think that blockchain can be useful for some distributed computing applications, but "next big thing" is overblown hype

@murgatroid99 It's useful for distributed computing at all?
@murgatroid99 Also this is too true, especially considering the insanely low max transaction rate

If you read a bit up the transcript, you can see that that's basically what started this conversation

user15026
10:04 PM
@murgatroid99 That's kinda my feeling, I feel like we took this niche useful thing and then exploded it into things it never should have been

I honestly think that bitcoin was a good idea in theory that turned out to have deal-breaking problems in practice
Now that it got big, a lot of companies are jumping on it because of buzzwords, and I think a lot of them don't really need it, but until they figure that out companies like IBM and Oracle will be there to sell them "blockchain as a service" or whatever

@murgatroid99 Yes, definitely. But it's hard to make a truly decentralized currency
@murgatroid99 :| well a lot of companies don't need a lot of the stuff they use

@murgatroid99 they are already selling a "self driving database", and i have no idea what that means
@murgatroid99 i think any time you try to use technology to get around human tendencies, the human tendencies win out

@GodEmperorDune Basically they're taking a waymo car and ductaping a rack of servers on it

10:12 PM
@KevinvanderVelden i don't think it has anything to do with waymo as much as some sort of super high level proprietary programming language which gets translated down to regular old tables and SQL scripts

Nope, literally just servers ductaped to a self driving car

I mean they're probably at least bolted on, or inside

but then how does it internet

10:27 PM
@badp through THE CLOUD!
and also bitcoin

@GodEmperorDune not a very good strategy in california

@badp bay area is usually cloudy
the fog even has a twitter account

@Unionhawk nope, ductape

user15026
@Unionhawk Aww, I love this

@Unionhawk this is how society forms

10:29 PM
@Unionhawk this reminds me of that pupper that sells cucumbers for scritches
such a good boi

I think I'm going to pick up Stellaris' Ascension pack, next time it goes on sale.

user15026
I FEEL LIKE THE WORST

user15026
Call customer to follow up, ask for X, person states they're person X's son

user15026
I go "okay but I would like to speak with X"

user15026
Turns out, they DIED LAST OCTOBER

user15026
10:35 PM
We had no idea.

@Ash but they still paid their internet bill?

user15026
@GodEmperorDune The son and his mom were taking care of things

user15026
So they're still using it an everythign

@Ash Ouchie

user15026
but then I was like "do you want me to change the contact info because it's all your dad's name, I can put it in yours" and he asked me to keep it in his dad's name so now anyone who goes to contact him will ask for his dad and addres it to his dad

user15026
10:39 PM
So I am like OH NO

user15026
because I am following their wishes but I am just like oh I hope this doesn't make them feel awful

@Ash maybe its their way of keeping him alive?

@Ash can you make a note in the system?

user15026
That's kinda what I am hoping, that this is a comfort thing and not that we're going to be causing them anguish every time we address an email to him

user15026
@KevinvanderVelden I did, yes

10:42 PM
Then you did everything you can do, and if they ever decide they don't want it anymore they can just get it changed :)

user15026
nods I am trying to tell myself that but I still feel awkwardsauce

Well, it is an awkward situation! But one they chose to have, and that's not a judgement on them either, though they don't get to complain about awkwardness they make =p

user15026
This is true. And they didn't complain at all when I called, I just was like oh no what do

Is anyone else reinstalling Destiny 2 for the expansion today?

hmmmm. just double checking, Pillars of Eternity didn't need online connectivity did it?

@RedRiderX i still have it installed, i suppose i should update it though

Oh, E3 is in just a month? Where has this year gone?
Hopefully we'll get the release date for KH3 from Squeenix's press conference.

user15026
11:20 PM
@Frank Is that even a remote possibility? I just assume it's one of those things that will eternally be teased as they re-release all the other bits in increasingly convoluted ways (because seriously it spans how many consoles and things now)

@Ash It's supposed to come out this year.

user15026
It seems like one of those things that you wait for, eternally and forever.

user15026
@Frank If it does, that would be awesome.

So if they don't give us a release date at E3, they'll lose whatever marketing hype buildup they can get.

user15026
(Mind you I never finished the first one but still)

11:21 PM
@Dragonrage I just hope there will be a full size new world space, not a parking lot outside an endless hedgemaze.

Although, considering it's Kingdom Hearts and we've been waiting forever and ever, the internet will lose it's collective mind whenever it does release.

user15026
hahahaha oh boy

@Ash according to the video i posted last night on Final Fantasy VII Remake possibly being in trouble there is unconfirmed comments that it seems the lead developer or project director is away almost all the the time overseeing the Kingdom Hearts 3 project in Tokyo

user15026
okay so I know none of our customers (okay very few) know me personally (my parents, a couple others)

user15026
but we do a LOT OF INTERNET in my hometown

user15026
11:26 PM
I just spoke with someone I knew as a kid

user15026
they have NO IDEA it's me

user15026
but I still get the awkward giggles every time it's someone I know who doesn't know it's me

ofcause assuming it's true we might just see more teasing at E3 for it and wont see anything substantial until the Tokyo Game Show

user15026
(this person wouldn't know me anyhow most likely even if I tripped over her now, because it's been like 20 years since I saw her)

user15026
@Memor-X well, that's positive :)

user15026
11:27 PM
@Memor-X but teasing is better than "this thing is not a thing"

@Ash assuming it's true yeh it is since a 2018 release (as speculated by YongYea) would explain the lead's prioritizing of Kingdom Hearts 3 over Final Fantasy VII Remake. but ofcause this would be a japanese release and i don't know if it would be a world wide release, if not we might be waiting more for the localization

@Memor-X I thought it was supposed to be a simultaneous worldwide release.

user15026
That would be nice if it was

@Frank i don't know but it would be good if it is
however when development is in Japan, i always assume japanese release first and localization some months after

Err. Misread that.
They're thinking about it, but so far, no confirmation on it.

Q: AI rebellion - siding with robots - whats happening with traditions?

YasskierWhen in Stellaris you have the AI uprising event, you are given two options: suppress the rebellion or side with the machines. Unfortunately, due to the way I build my empire (usually either with AI given citizen rights when I have the first opportunity or banning AI from start) I had this event...

@Ash all the plot bits between KH2 and what should be in KH3 are kinda covered already with the in-between games, so it wouldn't make much sense to release more games before KH3. Also, you can get all of the plot related games on 2 disks for PS4 now, so you don't even have to deal with all the consoles required previously :)

@Chippies 3 disks. 1.5, 2.5 and 2.7

@Memor-X 2.7? huh?

@Chippies my mistake. 2.8
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (キングダム ハーツ HD 2.8 ファイナル チャプター プロローグ, Kingudamu Hātsu HD 2.8 Fainaru Chaputā Purorōgu, stylized Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue) is a collection of the Kingdom Hearts series, developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4. A successor to Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix, it was announced in September 2015 and released in January 2017. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue includes a high-definition remaster of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, as well as two new pieces of content to the Kingdom Hearts series. The first...

@Memor-X KH 1.5 is for PS3
2.5 on PS4 includes all the games in 1.5

11:51 PM
@Chippies oh. my mistake. getting the consoles confused

did some wiki research, apparently 2.5 on PS3 does NOT include games from 1.5
but on PS4 they combined 1.5 and 2.5 into one disk

@Chippies really? so it has 6 games on it?

@Memor-X 2 of them are just cinematics, but yeah
a lot of value for your money :P
and a lot of plot covered

@Chippies if the PS4's 2.5 Remix is combined i might pick that up then

we got nearly a thousand hours of playtime out of the 2 disks we paid 20$ x 2 for

11:53 PM
It's weird seeing arqade meta posts being referenced on other meta sites

wife still replays the main titles while she waits for KH3

@Dragonrage Meta on the site design? can imagine what else from there would be relevant to other Metas aside from stuff about the upcoming design update to the sites

@Memor-X no, it was actually the dont use a close vote as a super downvote
